Re: [MBZ] OT even further than usual - IPAQ 5455
Did you try a soft reset!? You'll lose any data not in ROM but at this point you have very little choice, I am afraid. Good luck, Omar. Date: Fri, 12 May 2006 13:31:15 -0400 From: BillR [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT even further than usual - IPAQ 5455 Odd thing this. Physically it seems fine, and the screen is where it should be, but it just will not align properly and always fails that part of the self test. Some programs with options across the top cannot be accessed; often you need to press outside of whatever spot you are supposed to press to get a result. Some other Items seem to work just as they should. I think it is electronic - have even resorted to a couple of firm taps from the opposite direction of the way it smacked into the cement with no result I could see. The cost thing is something I fear is true, that to replace would be cheaper than repair. It does me no good as is, so am willing to entrust it to someone with some interest or experience with these things. BillR

[MBZ] What can we use to glue a door vapor barrier?
Hello List, I would appreciate it if one of you can tell me where to find the adhesive used by car manufacturers to glue the clear PE pieces which go between the door and the door panel. I think it is called a vapor barrier or some such name. If this adhesive is not available to the public, I'd appreciate hearing of a good quality, long lasting alternative, and where to find it. Thank you all, Omar.
Re: [MBZ] Street racing in Dubai
Guys, guys, surely you jest!! Who told you any of this!? Eye gouging! Dumping cars by the side of the road, gifting Jumbo Jets!! It sure makes for a lovely fantasy! Some of the sadest cars are driven there on daily basis, they would be declared illegal to drive here in a heartbeat!! As for the car in the second frame from the bottom, I doubt it is a Lancia. The logo does not conform to the general shape of that of a Lancia! Omar. Re: [MBZ] OT - Unreliable BMW V12s (was V12s)
That just proves my point. The car may be unreliable, but a big part of his problem is incompetent dealer service. ... Alex Chamberlain '87 300D Turbo '93 Isuzu Trooper Alex, I own more than one of both the 750iL and the 600SEL and/or S600. And neither car is as bad as the criers would make anyone believe. Of course they have more problems than a similar car with fewer components, simply due to the fact that there are twice as many components to fail. But more importantly, it is due to the fact that people tend to think that German cars are indestructible! So they drive them into the ground without enough maintenance or none at all! Others are stuck with incompetent mechanics who could not work on these cars but do not have the decency to admit it. I drive some of these cars in climates that top 120 degrees on regular basis and they do just fine, always! The people who designed these cars did not foresee the incompetence of some of the people who claim to be mechanics in the US! In Germany for instance, mechanics are very disciplined and strict in how they go about performing their art, hence cars over there keep on running almost forever. In spite of Germany's smaller size (compared to the US) you'll find these cars with astonishing mileage on their odometers and I doubt those owners keep pouring money into them if they were half as unreliable as one is led to believe. In my mind, it is a matter of correct maintenance by competent people! Omar.

[MBZ] Fuel mileage computers for diesels!!
Hello List, I am wondering if there is a portable or a semi portable mileage computer available out there for diesel cars and or trucks! I know of ones that are available for boats with diesel engines and I imagine the same could be available for automobiles. [MBZ] To what extent is a storage owner liable for a stored vehicle!?
Hello List, This question is directed to those who are lawyers or those who are familiar with the law, especially in Texas. To what extent is a storage owner liable for the safety of a vehicle parked in an uncovered yard but the yard is secured (chain link fence and a gate with a pass code required for exit and entry). I have an Eagle bus (aka, Grey Hound bus) that I am storing at such a yard and someone vandalized it by breaking and stealing a few outside pieces off of the outside and possibly the inside as well. The biggest damage I can see is in the front windshield which has been bashed in with a rock or something similar. I'd appreciate it if someone can answer this for me. Thank you, Omar.
Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 3, Issue 175
Rich, I must have signed such a document but that was what, 5 years ago!? I have no clue as to where it is. That is what the owner says, he is NOT liable! But I feel that he maybe negligent by either having left the gate unlocked or by having given authorization to someone to enter through the issuance of a password! Of course, I am not a lawyer, I am merely very upset because my property was violated under lock and key. Thanks for the reply, Omar.
Re: [MBZ] To what extent is a storage owner liable for a stored vehicle!?
Marshall, Half is not objectionable as long as s/he can prevail! Usually there is NO liability unless the owner was negligent and should have done something they didn't do. Some lawyer may dismiss that, but they will usually expect half of the settlement to promote that opinion! Re: [MBZ] Oil, oil, which oil!?
Hello List, I have noticed something very odd! In digest mode, which I am on, some messages are not included in the digests I get! Of course it became noticeable after I started receiving posts which reference a reply someone made to a post I had made myself. Case in point, and there were a few before it but I was not paying that much attention, is Kaleb's post in which he is replying to John who may have replied earlier to my post! I am not aware of, nor did I receive, any of those replies to my original post! I hope someone can find a solution to this. Anyway, Kaleb stated that Suburbans were not available with 4.10 rear ends from the factory. If I read Kaleb's post correctly, and I may have not since it is a reference to a reference, the 4.10 ratio is not only mentioned in the owners manual as an option but it is also listed as one of the installed options per the list of option codes in the glove box and from the option list I also got from Chevrolet when I gave them the VIN. It is option GT5 : AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO (DUP WITH GT8). I apologize for discussing a topic which is not Mercedes. Thank you all, Omar. Message: 9 Date: Sat, 11 Feb 2006 07:27:12 -0600 From: Kaleb C. [MBZ] Oil, oil, which oil!?
Hello Group, I just got back to Texas from Jacksonville, Florida after picking my newly acquired 6.5l Diesel Suburban. Talk about the noise level inside that cabin let alone outside it! I guess I got spoiled by the more refined MB ML 400CDI! In the Mercedes, one barely notices the noise, but I guess I'll have to get used to it, until I can bring the ML into the country, that is. Now for the reason I am posting, I am about to change the engine oil and was about to pick a few jugs of Mobil 1 when I remembered how some of us are looking hard for M1 10-50 or was it M1 15-50, why is that so, why is M1 xx-30 not wanted, is it unsuitable? And if it is unsuitable, why is it so? And what about AT fluid, do you think I should stick with Dexron or give the synthetic stuff a try!? Last, and Kaleb maybe the one who knows about this, truck I bought came with the tall 4.10 rear end and I am thinking of changing the rear end to the more economical 3.70. The only downside I am aware of as of now is that the towing capacity drops from 10,000 lbs. to 8,000 lbs. (or was it from 8,000 lbs to 6,000 lbs!?). Can anyone tell me in real life terms what would be a 10,000 , 8,000 and 6,000 lbs tow? I don't envision towing anything more than a UHAUL trailer every now and then and even more rare, an inoperable car on the back of a trailer. Any help will be greatly appreciated and thank you all, Omar.

Dave, As I was walking down one of the aisles in Home Depot the other day, you and your post came to my mind as I saw a large see-through jug of a yellowish liquid which said something or another about cleaning fins on cooling systems. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [MBZ] Evaporator cleaning - update To: Mercedes Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi all, I posted a few days ago, asking for recommendations for A/C evaporator cleaners. I was looking for one of those foaming aerosol products that's supposed to lift crud off the fins, and rinse it down the drain tubes. I found a couple of rather pricey options on the internet ($15-$40 per can), but was hoping to locate something local so I could get it done sooner. On Friday, I called a number of major McParts places, HVAC suppliers, and Auto A/C specialty shops. NOBODY had anything, and most had no idea what I was talking about, let alone heard of any specific products like this. Most were surprised when I told them that I had found several on the internet and just wanted a local supply! Quite a disappointing venture, at the outset. . :-) Best regards, -- Dave M. Re: [MBZ] I need your help on how to finalize a vehicle purchase on eBay!
Hello Folks, I just got off the phone with the eBay seller on who's Suburban I had bid and won a few days ago. First off, a lady insisted on talking to me instead of her brother (the eBay seller who was not available as she told me!). I know my paranoia could be playing somewhat of a role here but the lady was definitely hostile and very unfriendly to me. I told her that eBay encourages people when dealing with large amounts of cash to retain an escrow service and that eBay suggests one particular company to deal with and that I am willing to pay the escrow fee. She would not here of it! She insisted that I send her the money first and then she would send me the truck. She then offered to drive it to me in Texas so I told her that shipping the truck would cost me 700 dollars and that I am willing to give her a 1000 dollars if she drove it to me. She agreed if I paid her the full bid price plus the 1000 dollars up front! She also seemed to cherish the fact that I can't fly to pick it up myself and kept repeating that I had no choice but to fly in and pay her and drive off in it or send her the full price and then she would ship it to me! During the 20+ minutes phone call, I can clearly hear this male voice whispering to her what to say. At one point I told her that I can hear a male voice next to her telling her what to say and that I would rather speak to him directly since he is the owner of the truck, she replied that I am imagining and that nobody was there and that she is the owner of the truck! Before we ended the call she threatened me with leaving bad feedback and reporting me to eBay unless she got a 1000 dollars deposit through PayPal by 6 AM this morning! I apologize for taking the band width to tell you all this but I had to tell someone. Thanks for listening and have a good night, Omar.

[MBZ] A car report if possible, please.
Hi Kaleb, I'd appreciate it if you can pull a car report on this VIN: 1gngk26f7wj353717 Thank you, Omar.
[MBZ] I need your help on how to finalize a vehicle purchase on eBay!
Hello Listers, I am enlisting the help of all of you who bought cars through the web, especially eBay. I am used to buying things on eBay but never a vehicle which is exactly what just did when I bought a truck on eBay and it sits over a thousand miles away from me. Hence my question, how should this transaction be finalized, short of me traveling there(which is extremely difficult right now)!? I am hoping those of you who have done it before would give me pointers on what to do and what not to do, should I use an escrow service? Where can I find a reliable one and are there reliable ones to begin with?! If I opt to ship the truck, are there companies I should avoid and others I should go with and who are they? I followed the link on eBay's web site to the DAS Auto shippers but it is not working, at least not for me or the computer I am using right now. Any bit of advice from you will be highly regarded. Thank you, Omar.
[MBZ] What do you think of a diesel suburban with lots of miles!?
Kaleb, What is your opinion on a 200,000 miles and above Suburbans, should they be avoided or is there any life left in them and how many more miles (if any) would they have? Of course I am only referring to Suburbans with the 6.5L diesel engine. Of course anybody else with experience regarding this vehicle is welcome to advise. Thank you all, Omar.
[MBZ] What are the differences between the Suburban different trim levels?
Hello List, For those of you who are familiar with Suburbans, please tell me accurately what the differences are between the various trim levels of the mid 90's~ up until now, Suburban. So far I have been confused by what the SLT and SL refer to, and the GM dealers seem to be in the same boat too! Until today my understanding was that the SLT was the top of the line, fully loaded model but I've seen an SLT tonight with velour interior while at the same time an SL (which is supposed to be a notch lower than the SLT) hade a leather interior! I even suspect that there is an SLE which is supposed to fall somewhere in-between the above two. Actually, a web page describing the differences would be nice if one does exist. Thank you all, Omar.
[MBZ] Car report please!
Hello Kaleb, If car reports are still available, I'd appreciate getting one on the following Suburban: 1GKGK26F8SJ719580. Thanks, Omar.
[MBZ] Where can I buy the best priced suspension spheres?
Hello, Please tell me where I can buy the best priced (and shortest delivery time) Nitrogen spheres for the suspension of my 1992 600SEL. I think the diaphragms inside them have ruptured, the ride is very harsh and unbearable!! Thank you all, Omar.
Re: [MBZ] Where can I buy the best priced suspension spheres?
Hi Dave, Most probably there is only one Omar and that is me, and yes I was outside the US but I have arrived a couple of weeks ago and found out that all my cars where not treated well by time and/or storage. Nonetheless I thank you for your compassion and understanding. On the other hand, and to the other Listers who may have replied with some unneeded remarks, I say that I did not know that it was mandatory to buy from a certain vendor or that it was Taboo to even contemplate the existence of several vendors who cater to the MB community! If that is the case, please let me know right now so I'd know my limits! My thanks to you Dave and all the others, Omar. Date: Sun, 1 Jan 2006 11:07:26 -0700 From: Dave M. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Where can I buy the best priced suspension spheres? To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=WINDOWS-1252 I think Omar may be outside the US of A, and if so, Rusty may not ship to the country he's located in. If so, try Speed Autoteile in Germany - they ship worldwide, have pretty decent prices, and can get both aftermarket and OE/dealer parts at a discount: http://www.speed-autoteile.com My apologies if I've got Omar confused with someone else, and Don is absolutely correct for USA based transactions. :) +dm?
Re: [MBZ] I need help starting an engine which would not start after sitting for three years!!
Hello, can any of you tell me where the computer/control module (that which controls the spark plugs among other items) is located on a 1999 E250 van. I just want to be prepared in case my recent woes with this van are due to a faulty control unit! When last parked, this van had just covered a trip from Ohio to Texas in the dead of winter and for whatever reason which seemed very logical at the time, I pressure washed it (to remove road salt) minutes before storing it. It is possible that some water may have gotten into it! Thank you all, Omar.
[MBZ] I need help starting an engine which would not start after sitting for three years!!
Hello Listers, This is for the Gasoline engine experts among us. I have a 1999 Ford E 250 van which has not been started for almost the past three years, at the time, it was parked with a quarter tank of gas. Today I made an attempt to start it with a brand new battery but no matter how long I cranked it would not budge, ecept for the rare appearance of wanting to catch. Out of desperation and not wanting to face my fears head on, I went to AutoZone and bought two bottles of Techron gas treatment and a bottle of the same by Gumout and another which I forget the name of now but has an S3 in it's name or so I think. Anyway, I dumped ALL of the above in the tank and rocked the van, so did two of my kids, for what seemed like an eternity (hoping to mix the stuff I poured in the tank with the old gasoline) but still, it would not start. I could hear the electric fuel pump buzzing and the relay clicking so at least I know the pump is operating. Now what I fear is that either the pickup screen inside the tank is plugged with gum and varnish or the injectors are plugged with same or both are! Does any of you know of a certain peculiarity of a Ford motor, or any gasoline motor for that matter, which would cause this and what can be done about it other than dropping the gas tank and yanking the injectors out (which is a bear on this particular vehicle). Is there a proven concoction which would loosen or soften the stuff causing this (assuming it is gum/varnish which is causing it)? I know that the causes could be many but any input you can provide will be greatly appreciated and may help resolve this issue. Thank you, Omar.

If the engine was carbuerated I would suggest a splash of gas down the carbuerrator - same line of thinking. Nothing quicker or easier than a snort of starting ether, a tool I'm never without. (Just don't feed it to your MB diesels!) If it fires, you need to look at the fuel delivery system (which is probably your problem at this point.) I fed a snort to my genset yesterday, and it fired! That proved that I had compression and spark, and that the valve and ignition timing were at least plausible. You can get to at least one plug on a v8 ford van for diagnostic purposes. But, I was going to suggest a snort of ether myself. Sometimes it just needs a kick to wake it up. K .. This engine is fuel injected but whatever starting fluid I use, the stuff can be sprayed/poured down the air intake! Anyway, Where can I find Ether, would AutoZone and the like have it?! Omar.
[MBZ] How safe is buying a car without a title and what can be done to get it titled!?
Merry Christmas Listers, can any of you tell me what is involved in titling a car bought with a bill of sale!? Any pitfalls to look out for? The seller says that it is done often enough that I need not worry and that I can either do it my self or have a pro do it for a small fee! Is that true and how small is small!? The seller bought the car from a dealer in the Midwest who had bought it at an auction in PA and the sealer lost or misplaced the title since then!! Is it safe to buy a car on two bills of sale from two different sellers who are in two corners of the country!? Any input will be appreciated and thank you all, Omar.
[MBZ] CarFax report request!
Kaleb, If you still can do a Carfax report, I'd appreciate it. WDBGA42E4NA043025 Thank you, Omar.

I asked him for that and he got a little bit upset and told me to check his feedback! He also asked me if I wanted him to fax the paperwork! I emailed him apologizing, for I meant no insult to him or his friend (the car owner) but I explained to him that not ALL mechanics are decent and honest, I also included my fax number. Nothing was faxed until the writing of this!! I just hope the reason was that he was not able to lay his hands on the documents in time! Omar
