I agree especially with the top up it looks very strange. Not too bad with the

Yes. Exactly.
I just got a message from him saying I can come and scan it at 4pm. I suppose I
will.
You both are right about me not having ample room to mess with it and not

Don’t know about that.

The old couple down the street from me who have two whole rooms in their home
literally full of Lionel stuff, most of is still boxed with with all the boxes
and packing materials can’t give the stuff away. MMM says they’re asking train
show prices, too, which also may contribute to to the problem.

Part of the problem is their unwillingness to ship anything, however, this is a
perfect example of Baby Boomers and their interests and how not a whole lot of
younger people care about this stuff.

Re: [MBZ] Amazing Mercedes Wagon

2024-07-16 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
These are wonderful cars, and have the reliability of a Corolla. I wonder how
many miles it has.

My former 1999 E320 wagon had almost 230k on the clock before it went to
CoPart. It was perfectly drivable and would easily make 300k given the chance,
I believe.

I paid $3300 for it in 2017 with 175k on the clock. One owner, dealer
maintained. Insurance company totaled it out for $5300 in March. I think I may
have made money on this deal.

Re: [MBZ] begje interior

2024-07-16 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I’ve done it, but considering that this is nothing more than a flip for the guy
and he has no interest in the vehicle itself, you’re essentially assuming the
risk he took when he bought it at auction. If it was a private seller/owner I
would have a different attitude as you could at least get some history out of
them, but in this case that’s a big black hole and isn’t going to change unless
you get a VMI.

If you were Floyd with a vast estate and cars to scavenge parts off of as well
as resources for reprogramming ECUs, I could totally see it. But in your case I
think it’s a bad idea. I would feel the same way if it were me, even knowing
what we do about it at this point. Unless I was hell bent on having one of
these, I would move on. There will always be more.

Worst case, check it out, scan it, (don’t share the results with the seller, he
doesn’t deserve or need thte information) and report back to see if it’s
repairable. Then you’ve got to make a quick decision as to whether or not you
want to assume the risk.

I’ve walked away from plenty of deals like this and never felt bad about one
yet.

In perfect shape it might be a $5k vehicle but $4500 might be more realistic.
It’s 16yr old but maybe the diesel adds a bit of value.

Add up all what might be needed (CP swap figure $1k easy to get a “new” one for
$400, maybe $400 for programming, and $200 for fluid/filter, you do the work
not paying someone to do it) and back out from say $5k and there’s your number.
The CP might be ok though, you’ll have to see the scan.

Re: [MBZ] begje interior

2024-07-15 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Yes 722.9. The CP in a 722.9 is coded to the car. You can get a good used (or
something) refurb for $400 or pull one at a junkyard (that might not be good)
for not much and then clone it from the old one. That will cost something
unless you “know a guy.” A 722.6 CP is maybe $60 and not coded, neither is the
control module.

Re: [MBZ] 2002 SLK320 - 83k miles - $7,500

2024-07-15 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
That’s actually a nice deal for the price based on the information in the ad.
If the top works and doesn’t leak (hydraulic fluid) and the interior isn’t all
aged out like they can get, it’s a good deal.

I researched and even looked at and drove a number of these thinking that it
was the natural progression for Mrs. Dan from her SL500, but she decided not.
They’re fun little cars, and with the M112 in them they’re pretty
indestructible. Avoid the supercharged four cylinder versions (SLK230) as they
can have issues with supercharger seals. I don’t believe it’s a big deal to
work with, but I avoided them for that reason.

Re: [MBZ] begje interior

2024-07-15 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Ok I just picked up an 09 in “limp mode.” Basically same vehicle I guess.
Starts right up and runs ok but won’t accelerate very well (which is not really
“runs ok” but you know what I mean). It will get up to speed but slowly. A scan
with DAS showed 3 or 4 sensors wonky. The Icarsoft wouldn’t talk to the ECU but
DAS did, unclear why. A cheap scanner might not pick those up. I didn’t spend
any time messing with it, will get to that when I bring it home

I suppose scanning it will tell the tail.

I guess I’ll take 20 pictures of Mr. Franklin and my scanner and start at $1500

2024-07-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I would consider Toyota or Lexus. Avoid Honda/Acura. I don't really know much
about anything that new, but my MIL has a Rav4 that has been pretty bulletproof.

I read a review of the GLA and it observed that "the interior vibe channels an
Ibiza nightclub."

Just prop one end up a bit to get some slope for drainage, run a bead of
silicone to divert fluid into the sink and drain

On 722.9s the pump can go bad and you need a new front housing of the unit that
the pump works in but a junkyard unit would probably be OK.

The hard part is getting it out of the car without pulling the engine, I don't
know how hard that would be in a R230 but it is probably pretty tight to get at
all the bolts. A lift and trans jack would help a lot.

What, you don’t have one?

And yes, you’re right - that thing they use to put the body’s head on would be

Rebuilding automatic transmissions is far from rocket science. In fact, it's
pretty simple for the most part. Make sure you have a place to work that’s
clean, an area to disassemble that can get oily/dirty, and some high quality
snap ring pliers and you should be good. I’m sure the more modern/electronic
they get the more difficult it will be, but something like a 722.x can’t be
that difficult.

I watched a couple of vids about rebuilding 722.6s and 722.9s.  They are
actually quite easy to rebuild, you just have to keep track of the bits
and keep everything really clean.  Stuff just comes apart like a 3D
puzzle and the vids show it very clearly.  I think there are manuals for
it too, I might have downloaded one.  The rebuild kits are like $300,
just some clutches and such.  On 722.9s the pump can go bad and you need
a new front housing of the unit that the pump works in but a junkyard
unit would probably be OK.

The hard part is getting it out of the car without pulling the engine, I
don't know how hard that would be in a R230 but it is probably pretty
tight to get at all the bolts.  A lift and trans jack would help a lot.

[MBZ] Selling due to transmission slipping but drives. 2004 Mercedes-Benz sl-class SL 600 Roadster 2D, $10, 500

2024-07-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
This tempts... I believe this is a 722.6 which should be pretty stout so
not sure what the problem could be unless it was run low on fluid and
abused which is entirely possible. Rebuilds are not difficult once it is
out of the car. Looks like a lot of work on it. This engine is actually
pretty reliable too. My rational brain says RUN AWAY but my passions
say... laws hep me!

Twin Turbo 12 cylinder. Renntech Modified, can be returned to stock with
device. Absolute thrill of a car. Many services done including ABC
struts, motor mounts, convertible roof, etc. I purchased recently from a
coworker and the transmission started slipping. Runs and drives but most
likely will need replacement down the road unless it is a transmission
solenoid/conductor plate or sensor issue. I have performed a fluid
change and filter replacement but did not help. I don’t have the funds
at the minute to dish out a 2-3 thousand for a transmission
rebuild/replacement. May slightly negotiate in person. If you ask me “is
it available” I will ignore you. If it’s up, it is available. No trades.

I’ve done my own as well as paid for it to be done, and all I can say is it was
far cheaper in so many ways to have it done I would never DIY it again, except
maybe for an R129. They’re really simple since the top is removable. That said,
it’s a mess and you’ll never, ever get all the old glue off the headliner
board. You can save some money by R’ing it and taking it to your
headliner/upholstery shop, but to be honest, they’re so good at it I found the
difference in price to be marginal at best.

2024-07-14 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
What has happened is that the rubber foam under the fabric has fallen apart,
and glue won't do you much good, more dead foam will simply peel off.

The fix is to remove the headliner panel, scrape all the dead foam and old glue
off, and glue fresh material in it's place. JoAnn used to have the correct
material, but you may have to source it somewhere else.

Someday I may do this in the Golf, this one is coming down (the older one was

I think the answer is "no" but is there an effective DIY approach to dealing
with a sagging headliner? In the past I've tried 3M sticky spray and it
initially works but not for long.

If not, what sort of shop do I look for? There's one shop locally that
advertises repairs that are typically in the $250-$500 range.

Car in question is my W211 E500. Headliner is not down but it's sagging over
the rear window shelf and seat back area, it flaps around in the breeze if I
have the rear windows open.

Re: [MBZ] sagging headliner repair

2024-07-14 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I would add that while implied, I didn’t point out that the headliner is glued
down to the roof at the top of the windshield and rear window. The dark brown
stuff you see is old glue, probably hide glue (as in made out of rendered
animals.) You can’t really do a proper headliner install on these cars without
removing the windshield and rear window seals. The fabric actually wraps around
the weldment of the window opening in some places, so trhying to “cheat” and
jus ttuck it under means having to try and jam a bunch of fabric where it
doesn’t belong, or trimming it during installation (very risky!)

And again, it’s the perfect opportunity to replace the windshield and rear
window seals, too. With OE rubber, of course!

I can’t speak to the W108s, but four years ago or thereabouts when I was doing
the W111 220SEb a new headliner, complete from Mercedes, was under $200 and on
the shelf in Germany.

But - it cost quite a bit to have it replaced. That’s mainly because I had both
from and rear glass removed so new seals could be installed. Money well spent
and the ideal time to do it all.
