Re: [MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology
I personally purchased a T21P for myself last year and I love it. I have had Dells, HP, and Compaqs before and I will never go back. I just installed FC6 on it a few months back and then last week needed some stuff off the windows partition, it was amazing how much nice FC6 was than windows xp. Not that FC6 does not have issue but they are far less and more manageable than XPs. [MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology
I bought a used Dell C400 on eBay in 2003...it has been a trooper. I've worn out 3 hard drives, a battery, added memory, and multiple docking stations (one at the office and a couple around the house...don't ask) upgraded from W2K to XP (it still has the sticker on it that says "Designed for XP"), and it keeps on going. I like: the small size, light weight, bright screen, Dell support...even for a non-warranty machine. I don't like: low powered USB 1.1, 9 pin serial port, no keyboard or mouse support, but those are all functions of the age of the machine. It was built during the transition period between old serial and new USB. I also bought a used Dell C400 for my daughter on eBay...same story. My company issues us Lenovo T60s. It's been bulletproof as well, and I like having a second drive bay. Took me a while to figure out that the hard drive is a SATA but I hadn't kept up with what they looked like. Given that I was previously strongly anti-IBM (stinkPad, anyone???) I have been pleasantly surprised. Years ago I had a PowerMac (this was the 603 PowerPC processor, pre-dating the G3 even). I had some software called Virtual PC that let me run DOS and Windows (Win95 at the time) programs. It really worked well. I could use the inkjet printer on my Mac to print from Windows programs, even cut/paste between Windows and Mac apps. Both Parallels and BootCamp require an Intel-based Mac. If you end up with a PowerPC mac, you'll need Virtual PC (now a Microsoft product). Allan Loren Faeth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > In theory, you still have to buy windows. In theory, you still have to buy windows. I have a volume license, as a Microsoft Partner, so for me it is free. If you have a copy of windows from another machine you won't be using, you can install it on the Mac using Bootcamp. Parallels is an option. It was not available last year when we bought the Macbook. Boot Camp was, and it is free. SO, there was no net cost from making the Macbook dual boot. I have heard that windows is somewhat slower in parallels than in Dual boot. Re: [MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology
BootCamp only allows you to set up a separate partition which allows you to boot into Windows (which you do have to have a separate license for, yes.) In other words, you either boot into Windows or boot into OS X, you can't switch back and forth. Parallels is virtualization software that allows you to switch back and forth between OSs, e.g., you are running both operating systems at the same time and can move back and forth without rebooting. There are some arrangements coming that will allow Windows-based programs to run under OS X, mostly games, but they won't even require that Windows be installed on the machine. I use BootCamp on my son's 17" C2D iMac so he can continue to use the Windows based games he owns. It works amazingly well, and according to him, better that Windows for some of the titles. My sympathies are with you. I used to do that between 4 cell phones, but for some strange reason when the last girl child moved out it no longer happened. When I went to pre-paid I had over 10,000 minutes rolled over that I lost. Cheaper for me with pre-pay, though, now that I am retired. I saw a basic T-Mo phone at Target a while back for $85 including the one year / 1000 min. Coverage isn't as good as with some providers. I had a Net10 on T-Mo once, quickly asked Net10 to switch it to Cingular (now AT&T), because it had zero coverage in the city where I worked. Tracfone's sister company, Net10, charges ten cents a minute, but you have to buy 150 minutes a month. Works well if you have GSM (AT&T or T-Mo) coverage and your usage is on the high side of the prepaid spectrum. They used to have a one year / 1500 minute card for $150, I wish they would bring that back. I get Kmart gift cards from Dealpass at 20% off, and buy airtime for my mom's Net10 with them, so it's 8 cents per minute / $12 per month. She dropped her long distance service and burns up the excess Net10 minutes on long distance calls. Since she was paying more than $12 a month for long distance before, the Net10 is basically free. The macbook for $1k is not spendy in my (cheapskate) book. If you want to go cheaper, get an ibook used (maybe $200) and put the Windoze remote desktop client (used to be called Terminal Services Client) on it and just hookup when you need winders. They are thinner, lighter and very slick. I have not seen a winders laptop for under 3 times the price that is as light, thin and FAST as a macbook. Macbook is STILL the best windows or Mac laptop for the cash. Loren At 02:05 PM 6/15/2007, you wrote: I agree but they can be spendy... Dunno about the Q that happens in a coup[le of months for me. As for laptops: I was just working on a merge in Word/excel when a longtime friend walked in. He said "I don't know anything about Apple" I said, "Oh actually, right now I am running windows. It just happens to be running on a Macbook." I was kinda startled, because once you are in Word or Excel, it doesn't make much difference what is running underneath. For my $$$, the Macbook with Boot camp and windows is ideal. For surfing and itunes and I-anything use the mac. When you need Windoze, boot it into Windoze and go. They are under a grand, Wicked fast, and fairly reliable. I would purchase the applecare within a year of purchase. That means if anything does fail, Apple will fix it for 3 yrs, not just 1. Completely compatible with itunes and ipods and i phone and I-anything. Read the manual cover to cover. I'm sure there are features of the phone that you won't use, but you might miss something that you could use. I just purchased a used IBM Thinkpad R32 2.0 Ghg, 40G harddrive, 256MB memory, CDRW/DVD, etc for less than $450 shipping/tax included. 'Twas pretty easy I must say. I only wish you could still get a cell phone that was just a phone. No cameras, email, web browser, etc. All needless complexity. > Also need notebook/laptop advice. Probably the small one (13") if weight / portability is a big factor. They used to make an even smaller one (12"); those have the G4 processor, not Intel and you'd have to get it used or refurb if you wanted that size. Allan -- 1983 300D 1966 230
[MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology
Since I hadn't bought a new cell phone in almost eight years, I somehow caved in and let my 16 year-old daughter talk me into getting a MotoQ. As a result, in order to be able to use the phone's gazillion features, I had to update from Outlook Express (gasp.I can hear yous guys) to Outlook Office 2003 (That train has long since left the station.I know, I know.remember I'm a computer Mental Midget). 'Twas pretty easy I must say. Anyone have one of these MotoQs? Tips? Hints? Tricks? Also need notebook/laptop advice. I'm starting the 18 month process of getting my Reactor Operator License. Need something quick, light (since I'll be schlepping it around) and durable. I'll mostly be dealing with pdf stuff and power point stuff. I do, of course, want wireless and the ability to manage my iTune stuff. Remember, I'm a computerus dorkus maximus so use small words and easily understood ideas.
