Well I have been getting maters from the farm across the road, and made

But if I am up there anytime again I will swing by and at least have a

When I was a kid, my Uncle Henry lived with us after Aunt Ollie died. He

porch and then transplanted them outside. One day at dinner my mother was
going on about how good Henrys tomatoes were until my father, who was a
little bit jealous of Henry, told her what he watered them with.
Henry kept a coffee can by his bed that he wee-wee'd in during the night.
In the morning before anyone else was up besides he and my father, he would
dump it on the little tomato plants.

I don't think my mother ever ate another one of Henrys tomatoes.

2012-08-16 Thread andrew strasfogel
I have yet to see any scientific evidence against the use of composed
cat waste in a vegetable garden. The bugaboo spread by ignoramuses is
the parasitic disease toxoplasmosis, which can spread from felines to
adults and adolescents. In this specific case, our cats are 100
percent house bound, eat commercial cat food that contains no animal
byproducts, and use a corn based litter. I compost their waste along
with Starbucks coffee grounds, vegetal kitchen scraps, and leaves
grass clippings from a back yard that never sees pesticides. After a
year, I till this composed stuff into the soil.

The reason I do this is to reduce the household waste stream and
improve the fertility and tilth of the soil in the yard. So, far,
the results speak for themselves. When you stop to think of the toxic
chemicals used on conventionally grown fruits and vegetables, there
is no comparison.

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300CD Klima relay - where is it?

2012-08-16 Thread Curt Raymond
The local cats poop in my garden probably daily until plants come up and I'm
not dead yet.

I compost our dog's waste by throwing it under a tree in the corner of the yard
where I leave a lot of leaves. Never any smell or trace of poo and again I'm
not dead yet...

All of our food waste goes in the compost pile along with much of our paper
waste. If we had more food waste I could use more of the paper waste.

We tried it once at camp, can't find where I dumped the bucket anymore so I
suppose it worked. Never had any smell or other problems. If I were going to
try at home I'd make a special compost pile and let it age plenty of time.

People get so worried about human waste. Theres a great pic going around on
Facebook where a little kid says Lemmie get this straight, you've got so
much water you $#!t in it?

2012-08-15 Thread MG
Yes according to the web site it is, as well as with R-12 and all
the different oils. Here is the FAQ on that one;

--
Q: Is Enviro-Safe ™ Refrigerant compatible with other refrigerants?

A: This answer is actually twofold. Yes, it is compatible
with all other refrigerants and will not harm the system. In the
United States though, it is currently not legal to mix different
types of refrigerants together. Intentionally mixing Enviro-Safe™
Refrigerant with another refrigerant unlike itself is not in
accordance with the USEPA.

--

I can report from personal experience that it is compatible with
R134 and PAG because that is what I had in mine and it still had
about 5 psi in the system when I added the ES-12a. On top of that
it doesn't generate any acid if there is any moisture in the
system like R134 does. Of course it would probably be better to
clean the system if you had R134 in there just to remove any
possible acid that the R134 has created. If you had R-12 in there
you are supposed to change to R134 first and of course we will
all do that.

Nope. The monovalve modulates the heat by turning on and off.
Although, if it's in cool-the-cabin mode, maybe it should stay

On mine and also on my daughter's car it was cold till the car
warmed up but it also occasionally would work right as when going
over a bump would make a connection at the fuse and the mono
valve would close. Though more commonly it would work or not work
after starting the engine after it had been parked at a store.

In any case changing the fuse fixed both of our cars and it
appears that from his report it also fixed Andrew's car. Doing
something that simple probably wouldn't fix any of the other
components if they were bad. Though I guess it didn't hurt to
resolder the pushbutton board on my daughter's car. I did mine
about 3 years ago because I was getting erratic behavior on the
vents and fan speeds which worked fine after that.

Great suggestions but I like Fuse 14 the most. What else is on that
 circuit?

it also occasionally would work right as when going over a bump would make a

 at a store.

In any case changing the fuse fixed both of our cars and it appears that
from his report it also fixed Andrew's car. Doing something that simple
probably wouldn't fix any of the other components if they were bad. Though I
guess it didn't hurt to resolder the pushbutton board on my daughter's car.
I did mine about 3 years ago because I was getting erratic behavior on the
vents and fan speeds which worked fine after that.

Easy enough to test but it wouldn't make it cycle between hot and cold I
 don't think.

Or is it that its cold air until the engine warms up and it becomes hot air?

Glad to be able to help. That low charge would have accounted for
the quick cycling of the compressor. If you need any more freon

Check the low pressure switch, not sure where it is on your car but on
my old wagon it is lower left (looking from the front) in front of the
engine/wheel/next to radiator, sort of. That switch (among others too I
guess) controls the clutch on the compressor. Might be a lose (loose)
connection or bad switch or something. Just put a meter on it while it
is running and see if it is wonky. If not that, then you will have to
start working through the other possibilities. Trace wires to make sure
nothing worn.

BTW last night I made some amazingly awesome peach hot pepper sauce with
some peppers of various sorts I grew in pots, and some peaches from the
farm stand across the road (SC peaches from upstate). Some onion and
garlic too, with a bit of rum to sterilize the bottles. It is the best
hot sauce I have ever had, not a lot of immediate punch but a nice slow
afterburn. A bit sweet from the peaches but just enough to smooth out
the flavor. I dipped some green beans in it with my supper, incredible.

2012-08-13 Thread MG
More than likely it is an electrical problem. Look at fuse # 14
rotate or put a new one in there. That's the one that sends 12V
to the monovalve to keep it closed. When the fuse goes wonky the
monovalve gets no 12V and opens letting hot water through. The AC
works as normal but can't overcome the full hot flow of the
water. Happened to me just a few weeks ago.

You could wire a light to the monovalve and watch for it's activity. Power out
I think means monovalve open which means heat on.

If the light is always on meaning monovalve closed that would point to a
defective (although good looking) monovalve.

Even if I've got the state backwards (light on versus out) if the monovalve is
always powered to a constant state while having alternating hot and cold it
should point to a bad monovalve.

I may be wrong here, but doesn't the klima relay only control the function
of the AC compressor? That is, it has nothing to do with the control of
the heater valve, fan speed, etc. The push button unit does this.

Your problem is that is going between heating and cooling erratically,
right? That is, its opening the monovalve when you don't expect it, for
example.

Therefore, I'd look harder at the push button unit and its inputs. Go over
the trouble shooting in the service manual. Check all the sensors.

You might have an intermittent problem, making it much harder to track down.

If my input is a repeat or I missed something, sorry about that... I
haven't followed the whole thread.

Nope. The monovalve modulates the heat by turning on and off.

Ah. Good point.

The _speed_ and _temperature_ of the it's-not-cold state will be
a clue.

If it's the KLIMA or the compressor turning off, the change will
be rather slow (minute or two) and not hot - just not quite so
cold.

If it the monovalve or the controller, the change can be pretty
quick (half a minute) and clearly hot air.

Even if I've got the state backwards (light on versus out) if
the monovalve is always powered to a constant state while
having alternating hot and cold it should point to a bad
 monovalve.

Nope. The monovalve modulates the heat by turning on and off.
Although, if it's in cool-the-cabin mode, maybe it should stay
 water-off - which is power-on.

2012-08-13 Thread Gerry Archer
Has the pushbutton unit been resoldered or is that not a problem on the
'85s?
The mechanical pushbutton switches malfunctioned on my '83 and caused the
unit to burn up.
The used unit I bought had to be resoldered, so while it was apart I
squirted some Deoxit on the switch contacts and lubricated the mechanical
parts with oil (I forget which; synthetic or 3 in 1.)

So far it's coninued to work satisfactorily.

hmm, would a bad switch cause the klima to cause the compressor to cycle?

Not on an '85. The KLIMA is in charge. The pressure switch is

electronic unit for temp control. Don't know if that is the Klima

ran just like it should but the air came out hot. That almost
lead me to doing the replacement thing till I remembered that the

changed the monovalve, the relay and did the pushbutton resolder.
Nothing helped until we changed # 14 fuse. So that's why I

If that's the blue fuse, it's probably dead because your aux water pump burnt
it out. Next to go will be the pushbutton controls if you don't take that aux
pump out of the circuit. When they seize up, they blow the control unit. Best
defense is to unplug it.

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300CD Klima relay - where is it?

2012-08-11 Thread Peter Frederick

Two things to check.

First is that there is suction past the interior temp sensor (in the
dash, I think). If not, the foam hose under the dash between the
plastic pipe and the fan box has fallen apart and you are getting zero
air movement past the sensor from the fan, resulting wide variations
in temp control as random air movement changes the temp.

The second thing that does this is a broken wire or a defective temp
sensor. They are thermistors, so open or shorted is a problem,
otherwise they should read some resistance at room temp and change
with heat or cold.

Typically on a W123 the foam hose has fallen apart. Replace it with
some heater hose.

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300CD Klima relay - where is it?

2012-08-11 Thread Dan Penoff
Yup.

If the foam bypass tube has deteriorated (broken down to dust and now missing)
between the air box and the thermistor in the dash, a piece of 1/2 black foam
pipe insulation will replace it perfectly and you'll even have enough left over
to use in another 20 years.

The easiest way to see is by taking out the glove box and looking up at the
bottom of the dash pad. You can also use the tissue test, which entails the
use of a small square of tissue that you place over the grille that covers the
thermistor in the dash while the system is running. There should be a very
tiny bit of resistance when you remove the tissue caused by the air being drawn
in through the grille. This works especially well in 124 chassis cars that
have the little helper blower at the base of the passenger side A pillar. The
124 grille is on the ceiling in the cluster of stuff containing the map lights
and sunroof switches.

[MBZ] 1985 300CD stuck in first gear (goes in reverse)

2007-08-29 Thread andrew strasfogel
Help! This morning, SWMBO's 1985 300CD won't progress out of first gear!
She had to leave the car in the carport and take the bus! What should I do
when I get home to check it out? Could it be low fluid? Stuck kickdown
switch? This has happened before but i forget how it was resolved (perhaps
a new switch). It moves in reverse.

[MBZ] 1985 300CD Seat locking problem solved, sort of...

2006-05-16 Thread andrew strasfogel

Many thanks to Marshall and Jim for their assistance in solving the case of
the floppy seat backs in her 1985 300CD.

Anyway, this morning I discovered that I can manually move the locking
hardware on the inside of each bucket seat into the lock position with the
engine running, and the seats then stay locked safely while we are driving!
Each seat back unlocks properly when a door is opened or the release button
on the side of the chair is pressed, but the linkages will not move by
themselves into the locking position (although they will stay there once I
slide the hooked lever into place). Is it possible there is a problem in
the locking circuit only?

BTW, I'd appreciate it if someone could send me Marshall's message
containing the links to the manual pages as i accidentally deleted it. :((

the trailer hitch. Did I miss something I don't see
any mention ablut a new transmission.
