Re: [MBZ] E320 CDI repo

2023-12-08 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
One of my former work associates bought a repoed 2020 GT-R. He had it for about
a month when it got firebombed in his driveway one night. Long story short,
thanks to his driveway camera, turns out it was the guy from whom the car was
repoed. Said guy is cooling his heels in the pokey still.

Re: [MBZ] E320 vs X5

2023-09-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I have had LED bulbs in the headlights of my 2013 F150 for several years
now. No problems so far and they are brighter. My mechanic son installed
them and for some reason looked at them again a while later and changed
them. At that point I ended up with high and low reversed until he
pulled them and put them back the way they were.
He did not have quite as good luck as I have. He had one of his LED
bulbs start to flicker and had to change it out. I think he got a new
one on warranty however.

Testing, such as it is, passed, I installed them in the car. That was
a bit fiddly, it looks like the bulbs are intended to go in multiple
ways, just in case they have to be rotated due to the unavoidable
directionality of the LEDs vs the reflectors. (Probably for use with
low beams, which I would not do. I also noticed that the city light
socket on the other side is also broken, and was wedged into place
with a wad of blue paper towel. Perhaps I should have ordered two
replacements?) I then took another test drive.

Yes, noticeably brighter. The light pattern seemed good while
driving, and turning high beams off made the lighting seem much
dimmer, which was not the case when I first started investigating.
We'll see how these hold up, I put the old H7s in the trunk just in
case the LEDs crap out on the road. There were no lamp-out
indications, which is good. (Some cars don't like some LED bulbs.)

Re: [MBZ] E320 vs X5

2023-09-10 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Good work, Jim!

Mercedes has a kit (2108260582) for replacing those driving light bulb sockets
for some models of this vintage. I’ve gotten them before, in fact, I’ve got a
pair of them for my CL600 I have yet to install. The halogen lamps in these
drew too much current for the original harness and as a result, the wires would
melt as would the socket.

The kit is a new socket with pigtails on it and costs about $12 from online
sellers like mbpartsource.com (MB of Laredo).

Such a difference when compared to the hour-long cluster-f**k that is that job
on the X5! Simply release the bayonet locks on the hatch cover, socket, and the
bulb retaining ring, replace the bulb, and reverse to reassemble. Done in under
a minute, if you've done it before.
As planned, while I was there I investigated the puny high beam on that side.
Apparently the bozo who last replaced the H7 bulb didn't get it bayonet-locked
into place, so it had fallen back into the housing away from the reflector. I
re-seated it, properly I hope, and it's now a lot brighter. To gain access to
the high-beam hatch you have to slide the headlight-washer reservoir up and out
of the way.

Also, some ham-handed SOB broke the bayonet lock on the city (parking) light
socket in the same housing. (Push and twist, gently, to remove. Don't force
it!) While I have another bulb holder from a spare non-HID headlight I bought
I'd have to cut and solder the socket in, and that'd leave the donor headlight
assembly, which has nice clear lenses, crippled. Not really worth it, I just
wrapped electrical tape around the socket body so it fits more snugly without
the bayonet lock, and pushed it into place. I think it'll be good enough.

I'm going to experiment with an LED replacement for the H7 high beam. They
claim brighter than an H7, and I guess we'll see. I don't care if the beam
spread is a bit off, as high beams are deer spotters around here, and the more
the merrier. (NOT true for low beams, where lighting pattern is critical!)
They're complete crap for oncoming traffic anyway, so I don't see how it could
be bad if the light pattern is even remotely close to what it should be. And,
brighter is better. What I've noticed is that it's barely worth putting on the
high beams on this car. Not sure if that's just the natural disparity with HID
vs halogen, a result of the un-seated high beam on the driver's side, or what.
Anyway, 40-odd dollars and in a few days I'll know more. Will it work? Will
it be brighter? Usably? Will the lamp-out system get pissed? Will it be too
stupidly blue? Will it burn out quickly due to piss-poor thermal design?

I'll let y'all know.

Re: [MBZ] E320

2023-08-09 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Yes, I'm having some of those issues with the E500, the passenger side blows
cold but the driver's side much less so, until the whole car cools down. The
refrigerant charge is good. I think there's a stuck or broken blend door or
diverter, because also on the passenger side I get constant cold air on the
windshield when I'm running the AC, even if I manually select "center vents" on
the control panel, so I get condensation on the glass on the outside if it's
humid enough, while the drivers side seems to be mostly recirculating the
interior air.

A big contributing problem is the complexity of these systems. It's not the
simple 4-position fan speed and mechanically/cable-operated temperature and air
diverter.

It'll be interesting to see which he needs.

Hideous. I haven't looked myself but gasbuddy says about $4.90.
I know it's far worse on the wet side, I was seeing about $5.25/gal

I put regular in everything. Cash at State Line Idaho is circa $3.80,

His mother's 4wd version was $2500 a few years ago.
But, prices in WA are at record highs. For example, gas

Folks

What is wrong is an unknown …. Maybe just head gasket, possibly more

I think I can spend my dwindling years on other nightmare projects …. You buy
it $2k!

I have other projects such as the failed Chelsea pto on my isuzu rollback … it
won’t engage and operates by putting ATF pressure/fluid into some clutches ….
The solenoid valve tests fine so problem is either in the PTO clutches or no
pressure from the automatic transmission …. I may remove it take it to some
supposed experts who claim they can test it off the vehicle

Unfortunately I have no faith in experts

We drove it around the block last night

It had been losing a quart of water in say a 50 mile trip

On the way home last night I was fooling around and stomped the accelerator

Folks,

I like the stop leak for the human body thoughts….. aspirin or blood thinners
DO thin blood to the point that bleeding is harder to stop and I assume there
are drugs to thicken it for surgery for example.

As for epoxy leak stop additive or whatever it is …. Perhaps it only hardens
where there is the heat of combustion … I don’t even know if it is even epoxy.
And then it might not last very long. I don’t care if I have to take a $1500
bath on the car … I’d consider a $2k sale for the hovercraft with bad head
gasket or worst a lucky day … I’m perfectly willing to move on. Right now there
are a TON of mercedes wagons for sale in Georgia, SC and NC.

Not keeping it seems like a good idea. I kind of would a $1000 Nissan leaf to
play with …. One with a bad battery. Apparently if you can find a big battery
from a 2017 leaf you can beef up the rear springs and install it in a 2011-13
older model and then you can get maybe 150 or 175 mile range which would be a
useful car. I did drive a leaf around Atlanta some a few years ago and it was
a delight. Although my daughter had two Teslas and now one, I’ve never driven
one … they live in California, of course. And I wouldn’t even pay $10k for a
beater Tesla.

A magic potion poured into the radiator typically will not fix a head gasket
leak, any more than "leak stop" in air conditioning refrigerant will fix a
leaking seal or evaporator. Or if it does it's not for long. And if it actually
does plug it up, what else is it going to plug up?

I suppose there may be some rare exceptions, or experiments that show it works
for very tiny leaks, that allow the manufacturers to claim it works. My
experience trying these kinds of things over the years is that none of it
really does anything.

Folks,

So I removed the front pan of the E320 hovercraft 2002 wagon this afternoon.

After running the engine a while I was able to see that the water leak was
coming from the coolant reservoir overflow. The car came with the wrong cap ….
I ordered one and was sent a screw on plastic one … I took the cap off my 123
wagon and it seemed to fit …. I ordered a Chinese copy of the 123 wagon cap …
it fit but was harder to install than the 123 cap so I put that one on the
hovercraft …. Anyway it was leaking from the overflow. When I installed the
Chinese 123 style radiator cap the leak stopped !!! Maybe the problem is solved.

I’m going to drive it 15 miles in a day or two and see if the water loss is
stopped. I can only hope. Now I’m going to replace the frayed serpentine belt …
looks super easy. I will inspect the tensioner pulley and the idler pulley and
if they are crappy I’ll replace them with high priced Chinese copies of the
Mercedes parts for $10 and $22 each … from the big women.

This is what I did on my dodge Mercedes sprinter and they have seemed to be
fine for a year or so.

Try pressure testing it hot?

Add UV dye to the coolant and check for leaks with a UV light?

Thermostat housing?

Folks

I did some more experiments

The radiator is dry and looks brand new

I idled the car for 15 minutes and SAW no leaks but it is dripping

Maybe it’s the lower radiator hose …. Can’t touch it when it’s hot or SEE it
leaking

I guess I need to get less lazy and remove the plastic pan

Pumping up the cooling system pressure didn’t show me a leak

I will keep plugging away

I know the recovery tanks are prone to leaking and I took mine loose and didn’t
see a leak

It was hot too

Oh, I did put a bag of some exhaust test fluid in the coolant tank and it did
not turn dark, so maybe that is a good thing

I will solve this

I missed the original post.
Are you losing coolant?
Car overheats?

Schmutz on the inside of the oil cap is common, and indicates nothing, other
than short trips, insufficient to properly heat the oil up and burn off the
condensation.

Folks,

So I prescribed the system and nada … no leaks that I could see, or see on the
ground or hear

I did this with the car cold

I bought a $12 kit of liquid to put in a bag in the reservoir… maybe it has a
hole …. It’s supposed to detect hydrocarbons

A big woman is supposed to bring it tomorrow

What’s an e320 wagon worth with what? A head problem? What would cause a leak

I've had leaks that only leaked when the system was hot, and the escaping
liquid quickly evaporated so it was hard to find them.

Any scent of glycol in the exhaust? White smoke or steam?

I presume a wagon has a rear heater core, did you check for leaks along the
length of the car and not just under/around the front?

Re: [MBZ] E320 with fries

2023-01-30 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
It depends on what system the car has. Some like the W163 (MLS) have an RFID
chip, some use an infrared signal (the kind you plug in). The newer cars with
the “keyless go” have an RFID that’s similar but different from the older keys
with a chip and EIS. They all have limited key assignments that the system will
recognize. The fancy computer can dig into that to see these assignments and
what keys are active but there is some other system needed to make a new key to
fit a reserved assignment. Apparently some services can take a real MB key and
recode it to make it fit but a new one is factory only from what I know.

I’ve also seen that the company that made the older keys and RFID chips is no
longer in business but MB might have a way to make those keys but it seems to
be kinda iffy. And pricey.

They are. And there are “slots” in EIS for 8 keys. If you clone a key, it will
lock out the remaining “slots” in the system, rendering EIS useless with any
new keys. So in other words, each time you get a new key, it takes up the next
“slot” in EIS until they’re full. If by some bizarre instance you have more
than 8 keys, you have to replace EIS.

EIS consists of a number of assemblies like the ignition switch, and other
related assemblies/modules that have to be replaced as a system under certain
circumstances.

At least that’s the way it’s been described to me. I’ll certainly defer to
anyone who knows differently.

My locksmith has been able to clone keys with RFID for my Ford Focus. As my son
was constantly losing keys he once even made a key without having an original
to copy from. He had some device he plugged into the OBD port in the car and it
worked some black magic to program the car to accept the key.

I've never asked him about Mercedes keys, perhaps they are more resistant to
cloning.

I would bite the bullet and buy a replacement from the dealer. Cloning keys is
a dangerous thing, and if the cloned key is lost or damaged, you are done. EIS
has to be replaced.

I don't really geek out about tires, but I've been pretty happy with

tires that came with that car when I bought it.

Tires Plus?

Both of these are in my area and sell a range of brands.

It seems like a lot of the national tire chains are like eyeglass places - they
seem to sell a fixed number of brands and sizes, and offer much the same deals.

residue. I managed to liberate it completely from the rear
armrest and gave it a bath in warm soapy water. Much better!

The fancy front popup cupholder had stopped staying down, so
out it came for the same treatment. I also mopped all the old crud
out of its well while I was at it. Pop, coffee, hot chocolate (?), and a
lot of corn chip chunks. It works right now, and the cover door works
somewhat better too.

Ready for the road!

It needs 3 new tires, I just took the Hakkapeliittas off before my wife
went to fetch him Thursday PM. Two are worn down, one has a small
bubble on the side. (Courtesy, I believe, of wretched low-profile 17"

was/is a bit twitchy with these, which came on it. I wanted to minimize
the 80mph freeway trips (Montana) on studded snow tires, especially
as things are warming up, else I wouldn't have put the 'bad' tires back on.

Any good tire suggestions? My wife prefers buying tires at Les Schwab,
a regional chain with an excellent coverage area (for us) and very good

If both back wheels roll freely, rent a car tow dolly and chain the front of
the car to it. Take along a couple of jacks and a number of blocks so you can
jack up the front end and back the tow dolly under if after you take off the
remaining front wheel. I'm assuming you have a pickup truck with a hitch.
Use a cross-chain configuration with the chains under the dolly and around the
tow bar so the car can pivot slightly on the tow dolly and the chains can't
slip and let the car slide back off the dolly. Then swing wide on turns if
possible and take them very slowly. That sort of arrangement works well using
cable but chains should work if you take it easy. That's what I would try, ymmv.

Simple solution, let your fingers do the walking and hire a roll back tow
truck, It can winch the hulk onto the flatbed and winch it off with ease.
Tow charge might be a couple hundred, but it's then a "done deal" with as
near zero stress to you as possible.

I told them I intended to use their services, for any car I had that
was worth putting that kind of money into. Barney is not that car.
They understood. I'd done my homework, asked very specific
questions, so as to minimize their time involvement.

> And why do you not have your crane and your car trailer to use?

Crane's had something badly wrong with one front hub for
years now. I basically won't move it. Car trailer is covered
with garage contents, during our 'remodeling' project.
Not sure an ML320 would even fit on it, I know a pickup
truck will not.

2019-03-30 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I contacted Sun Valley Mercedes Transmissions, and they said that I could
substitute
a 722.662 transmission from a 2000 ML320 directly into Barney, my 2001 E320
4matic
which has a 722.664 transmission, doing nothing more than swapping the
tranny/tc directly.
Bolt it in and drive.

So, since I've been offered a free ML320 hulk, which still has the tranny and
which was
retired due to hitting a curb at speed and destroying the front end, it looks
like I have a
story for getting Barney on the road. Getting the hulk (which only has three

part.
At the moment I have neither my crane, nor my car trailer, to use.

Re: [MBZ] E320 winter beater?

2018-01-08 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Yesterday I put the transmission oil in the car, started it, and checked
for leaks. Nothing that I could see. I put the car in gear, and it was
UN-happy. The stability control system doesn't like free-wheeling, and got
angry and started hitting brakes, etc. trying to keep all four wheels
rolling together. It seemed to have at least a bit of power when I had it
fight the brakes, so we lowered the car and went for a test drive. It
worked great, at least at first. We went up the icy hill to start, and the
traction control system was doing its thing. We went down and the ABS
worked when I tested it. Off we went down the main road, and it was clear
that the transmission was not shifting, so it was probably stuck in the 2&R
limp-home mode. That's OK, we probably just need to clear the codes, but
when we turned around to go back, slightly uphill, it decoupled, and the
whine was back. If I restarted the car I could get it to go for a little
bit before it got upset and decoupled again, and we'd roll to a stop. We
were able to limp nearly home before even that stopped working, so Daniel
and I just got the truck and the tow strap and dragged it the rest of the
way. This is extremely disheartening!

If I understand correctly, this is exactly what it was doing for the
previous owner.

...Later in the evening I did the adaptive transmission reset (key on,
floored for 5 seconds, key off and wait quietly until the dash lights all
go out, about 2 minutes) and was able to start the car and move it into its
proper place. It was still whining, though. Not Good.
