Yeah, I did find the term a little goofy, especially because (to me) it implies a higher quality product, which, if you want to split hairs, it's not. As I understand it, top tier fuels meet all of the required ASTME fuel standards that everyone else has to meet, but they include additives that other suppliers do not put in their fuels. So, that being the case, the quality of the gas is the same as the no-name quickie mart fuel, but it has a few pennies worth of additives per gallon. The problem is that theres no way to selectively pay stuff and who would decide what to pay anyway? Sure if this were your home you could decide not to pay social security which would then in theory keep us from defaulting but: A. Our government income is variable to a huge degree and more importantly B. We put out something like 80 MILLION checks a month. Its not like somebody can sit down and redirect them, the scale is just too large. Looks like congress is going to kick the can a little more. I would like to suggest we have a Constitutional Amendment that requires Congress to pass and maintain a Balanced Budget based on the taxes collected 5 yrs ago.. and it is required to maintain a 5 year surplus [rolling forward each year] as a war reserve. Failure to pass a balanced budget should result in Congress being disbanded and all members prohibited for life from holding public office again. Replacement elections to be held within 60 days of dismissal. Further, I suggest the President be given line item veto, to allow the Administration Branch to actually Administrate and stop endless pork being added into bills before Congress. A person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. The IRS experience thing has to do with holding a position (like revenue agent) that implies if you could do that job, you could have easily passed the Special Enrollment Exam if they bothered to make you take it (and/or it would embarrass the Service if you failed it after working for them for 20 years). There might be some substance to that, now that I think about it. I've seen crap returns prepared by most types of preparers, but the one prepared by a person who claimed to be a former IRS agent was more likely to be fraudulent than incompetent. I've met IRS employees who didn't appear competent, but they probably aren't the same ones who would choose to maintain EA credentials. Just a few thoughts on Government Shutdown drama being played out.. Another person sent this to me, but it did stimulate questions not ask or answered by news media... Storming the Barricades in Washington: I have worked in the government on and off for 40 years. During that time I became quite familiar with requisitions, bidding, awarding contracts etc. It is a time consuming process with bean-counters and pencil-necked bureaucrats every step of the way. The simplest request takes months not days or hours. In less than 8 hours of the shutdown, miraculously, professionally printed 3X4 foot signs appeared all over the country in the tens of thousands saying-this [park, facility, etc. with custom logos] closed due to government shutdown. There has not been a government shutdown in 17 years. These signs were designed, specifications were determined, signs were then requisitioned, bids were posted and vetted, government contracts were awarded. The materials were then ordered and the signs manufactured then distributed U.S. Mails or freight companies. This shutdown was orchestrated and planned well in advance at least 6-8 month ago. Millions of tax dollars were appropriated and spent in this process. There is a paper trail a mile long leading directly to the White House. People do not realize just what we are dealing with! I just use a gas price app on my iPhone. It finds the cheapest gas based on my location. I don't use it for my car, but I do for the wife's. FYI - my last tank of fuel in the S500 jumped to 17.4 MPG from he mid 16s. Not exactly sure, but I'll see if the trend continues with the next fillup of top tier fuel.
