If you don't practice automotive birth control and end up with 6 "babies",
then I fully understand the need for some kind of shorthand nomenclature.

My problem is that some folks tend to refer to their cars by these cute
nicknames without providing the rest of use with the year and model of their
beloved "Fritz", "Gretchen", or "Liebchen".

For you it may be silly. For me it is essential. With more that 1/2 a
dozen W123s I have to be able to reference a particular car.

I find it much more cumbersome to say "I think that's in the yellow
1982 sedan with that I got just after the 81" than it is to say "I
think that's in Aaron"

_And_ I can write "Aaron" on a key.

Philip, who likes names for streets and cars but
does not bother to anthropomorphize either.

Once again, I am "king of grammatic confusion". I meant not that I was from
the north of Germany, but the word Tchüss is from the north, so I better NOT
use it in Bavaria.

I'm not sure where my German side came from (Schappert, who married Grimms,
who married Bugles, etc). They came over in 1902.

My wife's side (übersetzig) is from a little south of Köln...the region
around Badorf, including the small town of übersetzig (imagine that! it's near
Dattenfeld). This is in Nordrhein-Westhphalen. Engelbert came in the 1850's.

McCann is a total anomaly, my father is McCann, his father is McCann and his
father is ??. My grandfather took his name from his mother.
Don't know if it was rape or messing around or what, who knows...so Not only
am I barely Irish at all, it isn't even my "real" name. Kind of annoying, but
I don't lose sleep over it.

But the more formal "high German" auf wiedersehn is often just shortened to

I picked it up from a friend who studied German and my friend's fiance came

Mercedes had become a common German name, but it is not strictly Lutheran. My
Gramma's cousin (German Catholic) was named Mercedes. I don't think it is
popular any more. But the origin remains the same...the devotion to Our Lady
of Mercy pre-dates Lutheranism...it's medieval. Probably popularized by the
Mercedenarians - a Catholic order of monks that would exchange themselves to
the Muslims for the release of Christian prisoners (during the Crusade era).

Kind of like "Christopher" it means Christ-bearer but lots of
athiests/agnostics (like my parents) name their kids Christopher just becuase
they like the name, it has just entered the culture.

Just putting my 2 cents in, not requiring anyone to believe in patron saints.

1983 300TD - The wagon
1985 300CD - The coupe (or blue coupe)
1970 280SE 3.5 - The green coupe (to distinguish it from the other 2 door
model)

Brilliant or clever? Not really. Effective and clear? Yes

Re: [MBZ] I've got a long drive PLUS I need a name

2006-01-11 Thread kevin kraly
I've had 3 300D's and a 300CD which were all named. The first 1978 300D was
gretchen (just one that came to mind as was the second 300D, a 77, Frieda.
The third 300D, also a 78, got the name Ingrid. The 300CD got the name
Vinnie as my sisters were coaxing it up the Grapevine coming from SoCal to
Oregon (vin diesel). It was creeping up that hill at 50MPH in true 617.912
fashion, slow and steady.

*ALL* of my cars have had names. My current stable?

1994 Mitsubishi Galant LS - Green Lantern
1994 Mitsubishi Diamante LS - Unicorn
2003 Mitsubishi Galant ES - Ghost

Also have had:

1968 Plymouth Satellite (Road Runner) Convertible - The Hulk. She was
triple green.
1986 Chevrolet S-10 - MidKnight
1994 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 - Officer Mitchell

Many, many more you name something out of love, not because you
want it to keep you company. Though I do talk to GL quite a bit,
usually "She'll hold together. Hear me baby? Hold together."

It is a long long tradition starting with the reason men (sailors)
named their vessels instead of just calling them "The big Brown Boat"
or "The little Wooden Boat" To give to something that we live with,
and deal with on a daily basis a feeling of personality and a feeling
of purpose.

Would you ever get on a Forrestal class aircraft Carrier called
"U.S.S. Big Boat with Planes"? Don't know about you, but I'm getting
on the Enterprise.

Re: [MBZ] I've got a long drive PLUS I need a name

2006-01-11 Thread Christopher McCann
Actually, there is a connection. When Emil Jellinek first started selling
Daimlers in France, he insisted on changing the name as the French would not
like a German named car. Although a Jew, he was fascinated by all things
Spanish (AND was a diplomat of the Catholic King of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire to France...he died in a French prison during or shortly after WWI) and
named the car after his daughter Mercedes, whose full name was Nuestra Senora
de la Mercedes - A Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the
Title of "Our Lady of Mercy". In Hugary, he sold Daimlers under the name Maja
- his other daughter.

So Catholic girls named Mercedes, have the Virgin Mary as their patron
saint, as do our cars...including St. Frances of Rome (patron saint of cars)
and St. Christopher (patron saint of drivers).

There is alot in a name. Unfortunately, by all accounts, Emil Jellinek
(although brilliant) was a real SOB in the personality department. His
daughter Mercedes died in poverty. The MB Collections catalog sells a doll of
her, which OF COURSE (ATTN: LT DON) my daughter MUST have. We'll see.

  Tchuss,

WHEW! I never dreamed that expressing my disdain for the puerile practise
of christening personal vehicals with cutesie-poo nicknmaes would engender
such a massive response.

BTW, the American Heritage dictionary lists "Brunhild" (Icelandic) as well
as Brunnhilde (Wagnerian).

I love this list!

Quite right, I've only ever named one car and thats Hammie. When I was waiting
for his new exhaust to be put on (the day after I bought him) I was at a
bookstore reading a "Baby Blues" comic. It occured to me that Hammie was my
second Mercedes and the character Hammie in the comic is the second child. Fit
perfect.
I tried to name the 190D when I first got it and nothing would stick. Then I
realized I was trying too hard, a good name will just come.

name leaps into your head great, otherwise it's whatever.

So the little Indian boy (er, pre-European-invader indigenous small

for example when your oldest brother was born, I looked out the teepee
and first thing I saw was an eagle flying in the sky so I named him Flying
Eagle. And
when your other brother was born I looked out and saw a deer running

called by their less poetic names. "Grey car. Huh? No, the

I had a cat that I had to name for the vet. Called it Hobbes (after

was complaining to it "Don't be such a weenie boy." Voila! Instant

Re: [MBZ] I've got a long drive PLUS I need a name

2006-01-11 Thread Robert M Doran
Sometimes naming a vehicle is more than just fun -- it has actually
become necessary. Since I am a person through whose life has passed a
great number of "needful things"--most of them vehicular of some sort, I
have become a steady customer on a first-name basis at the motor vehicle
registrar's desk, the insurance agent's office and the NAPA parts store
counter naming just a few. In order to accurately refer to each of these
possessions efficiently, my wife and I must use the names we have
developed based on the most quirky characteristics of the vehicle in
question. And since once I have acquired any random needful thing, rarely
will it have to worry about ever being sold -- I just line them up and
use them for parts to keep something else alive. So for some of us at
least it is much more than a "silly anthropomorphism" --it is a way of
life. So there..

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics to non-humans.
Technomorphism would be the attribution of technological aspects to
non-technological entities. Calling your car "Brunhilda" is anthropomorphic;
observing that your aunt Brunhilda is built like a sherman tank is
technomorphic.

"Hammer" is an antropomorphism...sounds more like toolpomorphism.

I'm not. It's traditional to name machines of all types becuase, although
not human, they take on what could be called a personality or
temperment...they have quirks, you can predict their behavior in certain
circumstances and there is definitely a bond that develops between a man and a
machine that serves him well. It doesn't mean you think of your car as a
person...which is something MANY pet owners do. Have yet to see that in a car
owner.

Given that it's 200 Lb lighter, has 29 HP more (don't know the torque
of the 103.981), it might not be that different from an SDL --
My SDL is either "Limo-lite" or "the Blue car".
I think you'll know the name by the time you get home - the 300D 2.5
is now known as "Rattled" with the emphasis on the "ed" (due to the
collapsed engine mount that drove my wife crazy till the Rusty order
arrived).

I need a name for the new car. A crusty old 123 diesel needs a crusty

2006-01-11 Thread Loren Faeth
You can't even think of names until you have had the chance to bond. Then
the name just appears.

Mercedes. Did you know that?

My wife is not coming. I don't think 24 hours in the car would be good
for us.

I need a name for the new car. A crusty old 123 diesel needs a crusty
German name like Klaus. I can't figure out what my cars personality of
going to be. 126 LWB is an imposing car. But this is sort of gutless
with the 3.0. Thoughts?

2006-01-11 Thread OK Don
Given that it's 200 Lb lighter, has 29 HP more (don't know the torque
of the 103.981), it might not be that different from an SDL --
My SDL is either "Limo-lite" or "the Blue car".
I think you'll know the name by the time you get home - the 300D 2.5
is now known as "Rattled" with the emphasis on the "ed" (due to the
collapsed engine mount that drove my wife crazy till the Rusty order
arrived).
