No, unfortunately I have no idea. I sort of assumed (a dangerous thing I guess)
that there was some sort of
standard spacing. Easy enough to change the whole axle if need be. Just a
matter of $$$.

I was almost right. 7 drums are for 2,000lb axles. You'll never get 10

Do you know what brand of axles you have? Sometimes it's fun to find brakes
which match the bolt pattern on the axle flanges.

A friend bought an old trailer, and brakes of the same brand as the axles didn't
fit, because that manufacturer changed the bolt pattern since the trailer was
built. We had to cut off the flanges and weld new ones on in order to put new
brakes on the thing (the P.O. removed all the internal brake parts so we needed
new brakes). Located the flanges by assembling the brakes, adjusted tight, and
putting the hub on the axle to sort of center the brake flanges.

Re: [MBZ] I make it back, Walmart hell (TRAILER TIRES)

2008-12-15 Thread Archer

Anyone had experience with Hercules automobile tires? Their
prices at tire warehouses seem to be okay.

Thanks,
Gerry

From: Loren Faeth
The worst tires are generally the mobile home tires. They are made
to go up to 2000 miles when new. Period. trailers made from mobile
home axles generally have tire troubles.

Most car hauling trailers I have seen have 15 wheels. If you put
15 truck tires on, you get capacity and longevity. There were
pickups in the 50s that had 16 rims. Put 185 or 195 width truck
tires on them and your trailer should run fine.

One thing you have to be careful of with truck tires is the record of
the size/mfgr combination if you use a somewhat off-mainstream
tires. We used to run a lot of trucks with 7.50-17.5 tires. Most
tires in this size were no good. However, we got a truck after the
floods of 73 that had been underwater. It had well worn Hercules
7.50 17.5s on it. We ran that truck for over 20 years on those same
tires. They were great. Badyears, we always had at least one
blowout per year. We could count on tire trouble with
them. Sometimes, one would blow and take out the other on the
duals. We generally carried a jack, lugwrenches and a spare on
trips. Whenever I drove the truck with the Hercules tires, I never
bothered with the spare, and never needed one.

The big enemy of tires is heat.
The greatest source of heat is tire flex.
Tire flex decreases as air pressure increases.
As I understand, truck and trailer tire ratings have a greater

Truckstop scales are typically $5-$10 with re-weighs either free
or $1. Re-weigh is if the distribution on the axles wasn't to
your satisfaction and so a couple minutes after your first weigh
you use the scale again. The scalemaster usually monitors a
CB channel, or there is an intercom at the scale. They will ask
you for company name and truck number so when you go inside and
ask for the printout you can be sure you got your printout.

CAT and Interstate scales are a national chain with certified
maintenance and calibration.

The MFA farm supply stores often have truck scales. The one near
me charges $2 for pickup and trailer.

Re: [MBZ] I make it back, Walmart hell (TRAILER TIRES)

2008-12-15 Thread Kevin
Long story made short, you want to use trailer tires on a trailer and
not passenger car tires. The reason for this is that passenger car (and light
truck for that matter) have more flexible sidewalls to allow them to maintain
traction during all sorts of maneuvers - pulling, stopping, turning, swerving,
etc. Trailer tires only need traction when the trailer brakes are applied,
and as such have stiffer sidewalls to help combat sway. This is also useful
since most trailer suspension is unsophisticated compared to cars and trucks,
so the tires take way more punishment.

You really want to have trailer tires on your trailer, especially if you're
loading it up to its maximum rating, as you likely did with that W140 on it.

trailer tires look like they have blow out often. The load star trailer
tires that came new on my trailer did not seem to last long before they
were bald. I think car tires might last longer. Anybody got any thoughts?

Our car hauler weighs around 1800#. The typical MB I'd put on
it is something like 3400-3800#, IIRC. My pickup truck is 7000#.
The trailer tires are holding the car, plus another 2000# of load.

Of course, you could always stop by a truck scale and weigh the trailer
with the 140 on it. You could even measure each axle ...

Speaking of towing max weight. This is the first real heavy load I have
pulled with the dmax since I installed the diablo tuner on it and
installed the 65hp economy tune. Before when going down the
interstate at 70-75, if I started up a decent grade, it would downshift
(with cruise on). With the tuner, it NEVER had to downshift at all
during the whole trip, even with that heavy car on the back. In fact, I
was able to accelerate from 45mph to 75mph in 5th gear without it ever
having to come out of 5th.

since most trailer suspension is unsophisticated compared to cars and trucks,
so the tires take way more punishment.

You really want to have trailer tires on your trailer, especially if you're
loading it up to its maximum rating, as you likely did with that W140 on it.

I'd say keep the lug nuts tight too. I acquired a boat trailer in the fall with
dual axles. Has small wheels and
tires - 12 inch by 4.80 if my memory is reasonably accurate. I suppose the idea
is to keep the boat low to the
ground so that it is easier to launch and retrieve. In any event, I will have
to buy new wheels as the lug nut
holes on some seem to have worn somewhat. I can only assume they moved around
because they were not tight enough.
Needed new tires anyway so the wheels won't add too much to the cost. Trailer
came to me as a gift so I am not
complaining too loudly.

What little shopping I did at Tirerack.com today yielded light truck tires that
were rated 35psi (not really truck tires IMO) and priced higher than the trailer
tires. I suspect the trailer tires will work best, and cost less or at least not
more than the truck tires.

With the 12k horse trailers, they'd use the same 90psi 16.5 tires as the truck
used. (often the truck tires ended up on a trailer when they got down to 1/4 tread)

There are flanges for the brake backing plates. My only concern is the size as

Sounds like 7 drums to me. I think those are intended for something like 1500lb

Well take for instance, how much does a 140 weight? Im not sure. Its a
heavy car I know that. Trailer is a regular old steel flat bed 18'
trailer. dont know how much that weights. Tires I have on now are 1499

to medium cars, but wonder if the 140 was too much weight

I was almost right. 7 drums are for 2,000lb axles. You'll never get 10
inside a 12 wheel.

Yes, but the 7.50 - 16 was on the 3/4 ton trucks with 8 bolt
wheels. I am guessing Kaleb's trailer has 5 or 6 hole rims. (ford or
chevy) The late 40s and early 50s pickups came out on 6.00 - 16s
and had 5 or 6 hole rims that would likely fit on his trailer. I
bought the remains of an old ford pickup to get the 16 rims I used
on my bronco with 7.50-16 radial truck tires. they were super. A
real Hillary to get on or off the rims though.

[MBZ] I make it back, Walmart hell

2008-12-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well as we left off I was going to go back to walmart first thing this
morning to get that tire mounted for the trailer. So I show up first
thing. Wait for 20 minutes for somebody to show up to help everyone in
line. They say sure they will take care of it, will be 2 hours though.
Crap. Ended up being nearly 4 hours before they got to it. All the
had ahead of me was 2 cars needing tires, and one of those was only
getting 2 tires. Geez, they are slow. So when they get to it, the
start to proceed to tell me how they cant do it because its a used tire
etc. I tell them I have been there nearly 4 hours to be told this, and
its just going on a trailer. Finally they go ahead and do it. Takes
them less than 5 minutes of course to mount the stupid thing. Why the
hell they could not have just had somebody mount it real quick in the
morning I dont know. Anyway, that put me way behind so I got to run
into the ice storm on the way back. Actually when I hit the rain it was
not quite cold enough to freeze and it stopped long enough for me to get
home anyway.

Re: [MBZ] I make it back, Walmart hell (TRAILER TIRES)

2008-12-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well here is the deal, since I have had my trailer, I have been all over
the country with it with no spare at all. Well, the original tires
started getting worn so i started throwing a wheel in the back for a
spare. Well, one time I had a tire go flat and I needed the spare.
Would not fit. Crap, should have checked. Anyway, got another tire
mounted and continued on. A few weeks ago, I buy a new rim to use as a
spare off a seller on ebay. First one is wrong size. 2nd one (arrived
friday before this trip) wrong size, so lets see what the 3rd one is. I
would have had the spare mounted to it had it been the correct size. On
another subject, a little while ago I replaced all the trailer tires
with some good used michelin car tires I had. The one that started to
blow out was a little dry rotted I think but not sure if that had
anything to do with it (belt seperation I guess?). Anyway, have been
thinking now, is it OK to run car tires on a trailer? I have done a
little short bit of research and some say yes, some say no. Seems car
tires might last a little longer that trailer rated tires, and trailer
tires I think you are only supposed to go up to 65mph with them. Also
car tires are cheaper but the air pressure rating is usually much lower
than trailer tires, and the weight rating is lower. For instance, on
tirerack.com, the only trailer tires I see are goodyear, with a load
rating of 1820lb or so. With car tires, I find some humho tires with
rating of sometihng like 1598 or so. The reviews in the goodyear
trailer tires look like they have blow out often. The load star trailer
tires that came new on my trailer did not seem to last long before they
were bald. I think car tires might last longer. Anybody got any thoughts?

Well, you do want to go faster than 65mph.

Also car tires are cheaper but the air pressure rating is usually much
lower than trailer tires, and the weight rating is lower.

If you can get enough weight capacity with car tires, the excess capacity
of trailer tires would be wasted.

The reviews in the goodyear trailer tires look like they have blow out
often. The load star trailer tires that came new on my trailer did not
seem to last long before they were bald. I think car tires might last

Pay more for trailer tires and they last less -- what's wrong with this

 Anybody got any thoughts?

Yes. Or no.

Most of my experience with trailer tires is 22 inch, so that

And that's why the answer is not clear. If you need the weight
rating, use truck or trailer tires - not car tires.

Maybe that's because only folks who actually haul weight
will spend money with the hi-load tires and because the tires
are being worked hard they fail?

The big enemy of tires is heat.

The greatest source of heat is tire flex.

Tire flex decreases as air pressure increases.

As I understand, truck and trailer tire ratings have a greater
overload margine than passenger car tires.

So, how much weight is on the tire? Are car tires an option?

Well take for instance, how much does a 140 weight? Im not sure. Its a
heavy car I know that. Trailer is a regular old steel flat bed 18'
trailer. dont know how much that weights. Tires I have on now are 1499
per tire, so 5996 total capacity. Thats probably plenty for many small
to medium cars, but wonder if the 140 was too much weight

2008-12-14 Thread Tom Hargrave
I don't know but I do know that a neighbor was pulling a ski boat with his
3/4 ton Suburban and had 3 blow-outs in one year.

It turns out that the tires he was running weren't up to the load even
though the tong weight + 1/4 of the Suburban weight were well under what was
marked on the tire sidewalls. He went up one load rating and the problems
went away.

Our car hauler weighs around 1800#. The typical MB I'd put on
it is something like 3400-3800#, IIRC. My pickup truck is 7000#.
The trailer tires are holding the car, plus another 2000# of load.

Tires I have on now are 1499 per tire, so 5996 total capacity.

So that's 6000# with four tires. Right around what the trailer
and car weigh together.
