Wow!  the bullets you tried to order can hardly be considered ammo (IMO)
- without the case, primer and powder they're just chunks of metal.  And
since they were for a muzzleloader it's especially a problem.  I guess
whoever wrote the regulations must have been covering all the bases...

I agree with everything you said!  In fact I like the 22LR so much I
bought a conversion kit for my Colt 45. I was surprised to see it shoots

the 60 is the Tubular magazine version and mine is a model 70 which is
the shorter Carbine with a 6 rd clip.  For the money I think they're
hard to beat!  Plus there are tons on the used rifle racks.

Good luck with yours! Mine's going on 51 years of ownership and use.
If you ever need to remove the bolt (they eventually get dirty and cause
misfires) be careful when removing the spring and metal guide pin.  I
was putting mine back together and the pin slipped and flew over my
shoulder with the pin.  Found the spring, the pin is still missing.
;-\  There's not much behind my chair where I was sitting when it
slipped (but evidently enough);  but I looked, my wife looked and I
finally bought a new one from Brownell's for $3 and change.

available with aa tubular magazine or a clip. They also make a bolt action

2018-09-27 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
I shoot 22LR with a bull barreled Savage bolt action and have found the
Wolf Target Match is very accurate.  Unfortunately, it's hard to find at
times, and it can take some time to get if out of stock.  ;-)  My friend
& I went together and bought a few thousand rounds of Wolf year before
last and it took almost 16 months for them to fill the order (Midway
IIRC)!  We got them for about $4.48/box - I think we bought almost at
the peak of the shortage time frame, but it was a super price.  We also
bought when they were on sale and maybe they delayed shipping in the
hope we'd give up?  We try to shoot 36 gr at less than Mach 1.  That is
supposed to be more accurate (if they don't break the sound barrier) but
who knows.

But they eventually shipped and we're still shooting them.  I think my
best group was a 4 shot group in a 3/8" circle (maybe a touch smaller)
at 50 yards.   No, I'll never be a pro, but I can hit what I shoot
at   We try to go to the range every Wed. to shoot with our friends
- mostly guys we worked with over the years, weather permitting - it's
been a hit, Wet summer.  I think I heard we're on track to have the
rainiest year on record if we get just another 1" or so.  (Va.)

I recall one of the shooting sport magazines did a .22 ammo study. I don't
recall if it was grouping analysis or weights and measurements, but I do recall
that Super-X came out on top. They were my preferred hunting loads, after
modding them to a flat meplat with a trim die made for that purpose. I liked to
do some squirrel hunting before the deer season to sharpen my eye, as well as
scouting for buck sign.

My range maxes out at 25 yards, but at that the Marlin with a small scope that
came with it can easily do a 1” group. There’s a state owned and operated
rifle range about 45 minutes away in Lakeland that I want to go to some time
with a bunch of my hardware that hasn’t been tested beyond my home range’s
limits.

I would take the Marlin, my SKS, Ruger Super Single Six and probably my 1911.

the time was shooting a Japanese-made .375 H&H...and shot even tighter groups.
Obviously conditions must have been optimal.

Remington Thunderbolt .22 used to be truly awful, they bulk packed and often
they would misfire and require multiple hits. More recently they seem to be
better but I still avoid them if possible.
I forget what Winchester calls their cheap bulk pack but I don't remember
having trouble with them or Federal.

What is the manufacturer of the 5k rounds?

I once bought a box of 500 Remington .22 LR. I had a lot of trouble with
them in my Ruger 10/.22 with lots of misfires -- rim punched, but no boom.

CCI Mini-mags, only ones I buy. Get them in 5,000 round bundles and they’re
only about $0.05/6 a round. Can’t beat them. CCI makes the best rimfire
cartridges here are, in my humble opinion. I have used Remington Thunderbolt
and they seem to work OK, but CCI is my go-to for rimfire cartridges.

I ended up with a Marlin 60. Nice rifle, amazingly accurate and fun to shoot.

Just got 5,000 rounds of .22LR on Tuesday, so I’ll probably head to the range

Sorry I failed to write sooner, hope this is in time.   If not, you can
never have too many 22s! ;-) I don't think you can not go wrong with the
Marlin range of 22's.  They're semi auto and not expensive - around $250
IIRC - and available with aa tubular magazine or a clip.  They also make
a bolt action version.  My Dad gave me mine in 1967 when I was 17 and it
still shoots perfectly. Finally got my wife to go to the range with me

When I was a kid, the only semi auto weapons we had were pistols, which we

The 61 s aesthetically pleasing, well made, accurate, dependable, and
versatile. Personally, I prefer the tube magazine over the rotary.
Tube is easy to load, and easy to dump. no skill or dexterity
required. You can do it in heavy gloves or even mittens. It will
retain its value, which a new 10-22 wont, and may appreciate further.

If we're talking woodchucks at ranges up to 75 yards, a 38gr .22LR HP to the
brain ends it instantly.

Over 100 yards, it's centerfire time. I like a .223 with 45gr HP, around
3600fps at the muzzle. Either takes the head off, or puts a baseball sized hole
through the ribs, your choice.

That's why a higher standard of accuracy is required (IMO) in a .22 rimfire!

.22LR is more than ample for any 'pest' species at ranges you can reliably hit
the brain. It just takes a little anatomical knowledge to know where the brain
is.

Re: [MBZ] OT - .22 Rifles

2018-05-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Kinetic energy is mass times velocity squared, the tougher the critter is the
more energy you need. In a .22 you really can't go over 40gr (although I seem
to remember somebody selling 45 I can't find them now) so velocity is the way
get get more energy and 1300 seems to be about the top.

I've never been that excited about hollow points in a .22, if you get a head
shot (which is the only humane thing on larger varmints) the bullet doesn't
come back out anyway. If I were worried about the bullet coming out the other
side it'd make more sense.

I'm looking at ground hogs in the 100 yard range, CCI says mini-mag is 87 #ft
at 100 yards with a 2.5" drop, subsonic is 72 #ft with a 4.6" drop. .22lr isn't
really effective after 100 yards which is why I'm thinking of .22mag which
ought to buy another 50 yards anyway.

I should have prefaced my previous statement with "among competition shooters".
A synthetic stock is much more temperature and humidity stable which translates
into better accuracy which is what you need in competition. Its also easier to
place the balance point exactly where you want it which might change for
different shooting positions.

Depends on what you're looking for, I also prefer wood.

Heh, Dad owns something like 50. For awhile he was collecting "boys rifles"

For general purpose I'll always recommend the Ruger 10/22. They've sold a
gazillion of them,t hey shoot good right out of the box and the rotary magazine
is the bees knees. Folks like the Marlin equivalent but I can't stand a tubular
magazine. Last I knew the 10/22 was still available in the sub $200 range.
My dad built a 10/22 with a heavy competition barrel, laminated stock and 24x

yards had to be hit within 1/2" of the top to fall, no fall, no score. That was
with Super-X high velocity ammo at 1350fps, anything less and it probably
wouldn't fall...

If you're into bolt action the 77/22 is a great gun but I think overpriced.
There are a host of old target rifles available for small money, everybody
wants a synthetic stock and big optics these days so older guns are cheap.

After last week at camp I'm considering a .22mag. Had some very hard to
dispatch critters where even 40gr, 1350fps wasn't enough. .22 mag runs 40gr to

I never priced a henry, and I am aware of the current value of a Model
61, but every once in a while there is one with some use that goes well
under the mark you mentioned. 5-6 bills can get you one if you are
parient, and a 10 22 will NOT appreciate, where a 61 or savage 24
will. I have been sorely tempted to glom onto some of the un
appreciated 61s I have seen sell.

You needed to buy them in 1965-70.

I thought the Henrys were expensive, but looking on GunBroker a nice Winchester
61 or 1906 is approaching $1,000!

S class tastes with a W123 budget….

+1, about 10 times over. Semi-autos are finicky. A pump 22 is the 240D
of rifles. It will take bb caps, cb caps, S, L, LR, stdV, or HV,

The henry is a solid choice. Otherwise, look for Win 61, 1906, or
similar. Win 61 is great, but not cheep. (no birdie)

OTOH, if I were to buy a semi, the 10 22 SS takedown would be the only

IMO Only accurate rifles are interesting...and that is especially true of .22
rimfire rifles. I expect adequate accuracy to enable reliable head shots on
squirrels out at 25-50 yds. I have a Rem. 541T that can certainly do that.
Plinking is a lot more fun when you can hit what you're aiming at.

Stopped by the local gun shop, spent some time with the owner’s husband (SHE
owns the store) and he had a number of 10/22 Rugers. The one I liked the most
was the target with the bull barrel. Heavy, but an absolutely beautiful
firearm:

Hmm. I don’t see it on Ruger’s web sight, I was really impressed. Now to
decide whether I want to plink or shoot targets….

They had a bunch of the Henry’s, too, but he said he wouldn’t recommend one
unless I was looking for a “legacy” sort of rifle. I’m not buying it to hand
it down to my kids when I kick it….

Point well taken.

As I start to do my due diligence on this model, it sounds like most reviewers
didn’t find it to be any better than the stock/standard version as far as
accuracy. With that in mind I suspect I’ll head back down to that one and be
happy with it.

Thanks!

I was considering the target version of the American Rimfire, but then
SWMBO said that she wanted to shoot it also, so I went with the Compact.
Surprisingly, both the compact and the target have 18" barrels, I don't
regret it at all - it's a sweet rifle.
I don't get the difference between plinking and target - you want to hit
what you aim at . . .

Here's the one I wish I'd bought:

I wanted an International Carbine way back in the 1970s when the MSRP was only
$85.

The 10-22 is surprisingly inexpensive. I’m seeing them new around here for
around $230 out the door.

Thanks again to all - it seems like the Ruger may be the choice, depending on
what my gun shop has hanging around.

Like I said earlier, I think I’ll go out tomorrow afternoon and look around as
the weather is going to be crappy and the spousal unit is going to be busy
helping a friend cater her son’s graduation party.

2018-05-25 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
If I were to get a semi-auto, it would be the Ruger 10-22 take down. I
recently bought a Ruger American Rimfire as I've always wanted a bolt
action rifle. Also, this was my first new fire arm purchase - first one
registered as well.
I really like it - smooth to operate, feels precise, and is accurate to
boot. It uses the same magazines as the 10-22.

I'm looking for a decent, though not expensive, scope for it now.
The Bushnell red dot sight is a definite improvement over the "iron" sights
that came with the rifle - I don't like the rear sight.

Thanks everyone, you’ve given me some good information to go on.

I’m not really that worried about accuracy, so the Mossberg and others, while
they sure are nice looking rifles, are probably more than I want to invest. I
agree that a 10/22 is probably the one.

Since it’s going to be raining like crazy here all weekend thanks to Tropical
Storm Alberto I think I’ll go over to ye olde gun shoppe and see what they
might have….

I had an old Remington Speedmaster 552 that was a very good rifle.
Amazing accuracy.
They are a bit pricey now.

I should get another one. It has a casing deflector that directs the spent
shells
toward the ground, instead of across the line of sight of a lefty.

The 10/22 is probably a good bet, as others have noted.

Re: [MBZ] OT - .22 Rifles

2018-05-25 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
When I was a teen, I used to plink twigs, smaller in diameter than a .22
bullet, with my Marlin 60. That'd be about as cheap as it gets.

Ruger 10/22 is always a safe bet. Buy one used, sell it for breakeven when you
get tired of it.

If you want top accuracy, $400 should get you a bolt action CZ or a Marlin 2000
target rifle.

I've got a Winchester 75 for that sort of duty, but those are expensive
collectors items now.
Might find a Mossberg 144LS for a fair price. Like my Winchester, prices
bottomed out 30-40 years ago so you can't really lose money on one.

Don't have one at the moment, but Ruger 10-22s are well regarded as
semi-auto plinkers...
