ABQ is 5.2k. I did notice a difference in my oxygenation levels between
ABQ and Moriarty when I first came back here for a doctor's appointment
a week or so after I was transferred to the assisted living in ABQ.

I don’t think the derate for altitude is significant. I would be more concerned
about their efficiency at low temperatures. And being a heat pump, the air
coming out of it won’t feel warm like it does with a gas fired furnace.

It does. Less efficient transfer of heat to air during the cooling season

My shop is 40x60 with what I would estimate to be 16-18’ ceilings at the peak.
It is insulated though. I would never except them to be able to fully cool it
down to 75 or so in the heat of the summer or fully warm it but hopefully it
would be worth the cost just to help it be tolerable. I do have 2 large
overhead gas heaters out there but I have never used them. It would require
either buying or renting a propane tank and having it setup, hooked up, and
filled. Everytime I think about it, it’s when the price of propane is up. I
would hate to see what it would cost now.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Mini-splits

2022-10-15 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
That’s what I would do for the garage in FL if I was planning on being there
longer. It’s not insulated, but if I could close it up, cool it off some and
knock down the humidity it would make working in the garage far more pleasant.

I’ve got an exterior wall with the distribution panel right there, so it would
be an easy install.

Good point - if you live in a temperate area it’s important to see what the
unit’s efficient is rated for at a given temperature.

The 12000 BTU unit I had installed in the casita on the back of the garage is
rated down to 4F at 80%. It’s pretty rare to see temps that low in Flagstaff,
and my installer has been using these for a number of years without complaints,
so I was good with it.

three square feet of my existing garage is already on that third acre

Impending retirement, shrinking (physical) assets and moving equity into more
liquid forms. And getting away from what has become a bit of a hell hole.

Tentative timeline is late next year, but that could change for any number of
reasons. It’s still in the very beginning of the planning stages, so everything
is up for consideration at this point and very tentative. When we do, we’ll
expand Chez Penoff West both living quarters and garage. We’ve got a half acre
and plenty of room to spread out. I might finally end up with a garage with a
lift!

Good point. If I wasn't considering dumping the FL house in the next year or so
I would definitely jump on one for the garage. It would be an easy install.

I should've said BEGINNING next year. It was originally slated to be phased out
January 1st, 2023. The festivities of the last two years and nine months have
altered that.

I probably would buy it now, even if install is two years away. Between
inflation, supply chain issues, and the phase out of R410a next year, if you
don't purchase now, it may not be available later.

Since the website says,

4th Gen DIY 12000 BTU

Cool / Heat up to 500 sqft.

Easy DIY Install

7-year Compressor Warranty and 5-year Parts Warranty

Fast Shipping and Easy Returns

Shop NowFrom $1,738

is the trick to order the same unit through Costco instead of on the
website?

[MBZ] OT - Mini-splits

2022-10-14 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Just for grins I clicked on a link for “MRCOOL DIY” mini-splits yesterday, and
after going to their website got directed to a number of different retailers,
one of which was Costco. I was just doing some research on a possible
mini-split for the Flagstaff garage, which I was thinking might be a 240V
12,000 BTU unit or thereabouts.

https://mrcooldiy.com

The Costco price (members only) was significantly lower than all the other
retailers who offered the same product (Amazon, Lowe’s). Costco wanted $1,450
for a 12k BTU 120V system, Amazon $1,738, and Lowe’s $1,738.

This brand looks pretty good and has a lot of positive reviews. They’re
designed specifically for DIY installation. I’m not quite ready to pull the
trigger on one, but good to know there is an option directed at DIY
installation that’s reasonably priced.
