Usually on small engines there is one wire that handles grounding the coil.
Often it wraps around the outside of the engine and has a connector inline
somewhere. If you can find and unplug it the machine is always on which at
least lets you know that the no-spark issue is outside of the engine/magneto.

My 1965 Snapper Comet has zero safety anything. No switches at all in fact, you
shut it down by choking it out. Someday I might put a toggle switch on it but
that's just one more thing to fail...

This is a Snapper RER? (rear engine rider)

They're actually really simple and, as you say, already have the grease fitting.

I've had to fart around with this on mine quite a bit, a couple years ago the
pulley came loose from it's hub. While I had it off I don't remember if the
spindle fell out or if I took it out on purpose, I suspect with that heavy
blade it just fell out. I don't remember there being anything weird about it.

I've also had trouble with the blade getting loose on the spindle. I think I
failed to tighten it enough back when I didn't have an impact gun. I ended up
having to modify the nut a little and it seems good now but I should check it
again in the spring.

AC guys just left. They checked the capacitors, which were fine, checked the
r410 which was fine, checked the contacts in the contractor that were fine. No
issues found. Only thing they said was with the power flashed it might have
tripped an overload when it tried to start back up. I turned it off completely
when it happened then tried it a couple of hours later and still the fan kicked
on but not the compressor. Kicked on 5 days later just fine. So it appears to
be working fine at the moment.

Re: [MBZ] Stupid home AC

2022-07-25 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
If the humidity level is high, it will cool slowly until enough water has
condensed out of the air. Condensing the water vapor in the air releases a lot
of heat (phase change) that has to be pumped out before you'll really start
cooling the air.

This one might still have something going on, not sure.  It was around
105 today, house was 86 when I got home.  It has been running for about
2.5 hours and temp is only down to 82 at the moment. It is still 92

that, but maybe not after being heat soaked for a week.

I’m not sure, I know it was running and proper temp was being maintained then
about an hour later I noticed it was getting warm in the house and the
compressor was not running. We shall see if it shuts off again. Btw even though
it’s running the defrost board is still flash the coil sensor error. I suspect
maybe it means nothing since it’s in AC mode.

[MBZ] Stupid brake lite switch

2022-06-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The other day I got the BAS ASR error after I hit the brakes.  It
cleared up on its own after I restarted the car.  Figured it was brake
lite switch time.  I knew I bought 2 and installed one, so I have one I
the shelf.  Today it happened again and of course cruise does not work
when this happens.  Guess what, I don't have one on the shelf.  Just a
used one that I am not sure if it is good or not.  I would order from RM
but that will take a week.  Autozone has one for $30, a Duralast brand,
that if I ordered within the next hour will ship to home tomorrow.  I
have a lot of long distance driving happening this week and the rest of
the month and do not want to be out cruise control.  I see MSRP for a
dealer part is $17.  I wonder what the chances are my local dealer will
have one on the shelf I can get tomorrow?  Otherwise there is an
Autozone in Tulsa that shows to have one.  I am still going to order a
couple with my regular RM order.

Re: [MBZ] Stupid E320

2022-01-11 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I think the aftermath is over. Summary, post-recovery:

I checked the water pump at home, it was still stiff. Didn't feel
'notchy' like a bad bearing, it's a straight grinding stiffness,
perhaps like the drive flange is contacting the face of the housing.
Regardless, it's defective and needs replacement.

I checked my options, and decided to buy the NAPA water pump, which
could be picked up the next day. More money, but the car would be
drivable that much sooner. Total was $113.25, with tax and online
20% discount.

Once the pump was off the car the problem was obvious, especially when
comparing the two pumps. The shaft had worked inwards, allowing the
steel impeller to start milling a hole in the front of the engine
block. The pulley edge had also started cutting a groove in the main
hose neck. The old pump was not leaking, nor were its bearings going
bad. The geometry had simply slipped, you could see that the drive
flange was a bit out of plane, so it was the shaft-to-bearing-race
mating surfaces that had slipped out of position, and not
impeller-to-shaft or flange-to-shaft contacts.

The new Saleri pump, of course, did not have this problem. It came
with two gaskets, we used the formed O-ring style gasket rather than
the flat paper gasket. The only concern is that the milled divot in
the engine block might reduce the pumping efficiency, but there's next
to nothing that can be done about that, short of replacing the block
(!) or troweling JB-Weld into the divot and filing it flat. We'll try
it as-is first.

We could only get half of the necessary replacement G-05 coolant back
into the engine. There was obviously an air bubble, and the heat did
not work. I got the engine heated up on a test drive, and parked it
nose up while it cooled. After a few hours this way, after dark and
with the snow starting, I moved it back into the garage. The car then
complained about low coolant, so the air bubble had been mostly
eliminated.

I added the rest of the coolant in two more burping steps the next day.
My wife drove the car to an evening gig, and all was well.

It has been suggested that the suspiciously-short driving time after
the belt broke might be due to the battery being old and tired.

A week later my son called from his job interview, the car wouldn't start
afterwards. I threw tools and jumper cables in the truck and went to
the rescue. The voltmeter showed only 12V on the resting battery, and
it dropped to about 11.6V when the door was opened. Bad sign!
Hitting the key to start showed it drop below 10V, which explained why
it didn't even try to run the starter motor. I used jumper cables to
give the car a bit of charge, and it then started. The running voltage
was around 14V, which is good. Bad battery? After charging a bit I
stopped the car and put the load tester on, and the battery could only
put out maybe 300A for a second or so before the voltage dropped
precipitously. There was no date code on the Group 49 battery, so who
knows how old it is. It's at least 3 years old, as that's how long we've
had the car. A weak battery would certainly explain why the car ran
for so little after it threw the belt.

We made some calls, and eventually, after much screwing around, we
determined that Home Depot had an H8/L5/Group 49 battery in stock,
at $129, much less than other potential sources. ($140.48 with tax.)
We drove there directly and bought one. I put the jumper cables on
(to preserve system voltage) and removed the old battery and installed
the new one. This is fairly easy to do, though it being under the rear seat
is odd. A post-replacement load test (after the nice drive to Home Depot)
was just as pathetic as before. I then returned the dead battery for the
$12 core.

You might be right. I've no idea how old it is. Will have to look sometime.

The recovery went flawlessly. We drove over, dug out the car, put on the
jumper cables, and installed the 'new' belt and pulley. Checking all the
accessories by hand, the water pump was very stiff, which is not a good sign.
It's probably ready to fail too. So, I used the old belt from Barney, rather
than
risk the brand-new belt, just in case it did it again. (I had a tow rope, too.)

The car started easily, but was a little squeaky. (Water pump?) Regardless,
we hopped in and drove the 100 miles back home, no incidents.

Checking the pump at home, it's still stiff. Doesn't feel 'notchy' like a bad
bearing,
it's a straight grinding stiffness, perhaps like the drive flange is contacting
the
face of the housing. Regardless, it's defective and needs replacement.

Cruising in traffic knot behind plows at first. As we approached the
exit the dash lights got even dimmer and lots more warnings started
showing up, dimly, on the dash display. I was 'coasting' as far as
I could towards that last exit, hoping we could make it off the freeway.
It went much farther than I thought it should on 'no power', and when
I put it in neutral I felt it jerk and stop pushing, so I quickly pulled it back
into gear again. I had thought the engine had died, but it hadn't, quite.
We off-idled the rest of the way, at walking speed, blew through the stop
sign at the end of the ramp and rolled into a parking place at the $50,000
silver dollar bar there at the exit. Pissed off quite a few truckers etc. as
we rolling road-blocked our way to safety.

Really, quite _quite_ lucky, all things considered.

Were you cruising at speed, or slogging slow speed in snow?

One morning my 2003 ML350 seemed to crank slower than normal (battery
not fully charged). Seat heat just blinked the red light and went out.
10 miles later I notice the wipers are going slow and turn the
headlights off. Another ten miles or so and the dash lights up like a
Christmas tree. I'm now in a very bad place to pull over on the
shoulder. Then a mile or two later it slowed down, then again to 40 in a
mile. By the time I got to a ramp it was doing exactly 20 and I pulled
over mid-ramp figuring it wouldn't let me go to a parking lot. After I
stopped it wouldn't let me take it out of park, we had to jump it to
roll it on the flatbed.

A year later, the tensioner pulley exploded ten miles from home. I drove
it five miles to the tow truck depot with no belt, lights were a little
dim and the temp went up a little. Could have driven it home but didn't
want to chance it. That pulley felt fine less than 1000 miles earlier
when I replaced the alternator.

It was closer to 5. Puking engine at the end was pushing it barely faster
than we would have been able to, on dry pavement. Which it wasn't.
The plows were out and the snow was coming down...

Heat had stopped. We're on our way soon to retrieve the car... if we can!

Not doing that on a brand new battery and no serpentine belt.
50 miles with no headlights maybe.
11 miles would be easy, assuming you could get the coolant moving.
I know from experience a M112 only goes up 5-10 degrees when it loses a
belt in winter, but that was on an engine that already had the coolant
warm and circulating.
Warm water continued to rise in the engine, and drop as it cooled
through the radiator.

That is pretty common and cheap to replace.  I always check them before
I do a belt.  Probably a good idea to keep on the shelf.

The 05E320 wagon munched the tensioner pulley the day after I got it,
late at night.  Had to call a friend to come collect me, I was about
100yd from another friend's farm so pulled into a field and left it
there.  I should have dealt with it as I heard it screaming on the way
home from Hilton Head, surprised it did not fail on the trip, out in the
middle of the ACE Basin with gators around.

Pretty common source of failure on these engines/cars and fortunately an
easy/cheap one to fix. Sorry you had a failure while on the road, especially in
inclement weather. That’s never fun, but at least you weren’t stranded out in
the Styx somewhere.

For what it’s worth, this is a maintenance item I always check on an M112
engine as they’re easy to spot if worn and equally easy to swap out.

That's the problem. Pass conditions are generally terrible, and _towing_ heavy
could well be quite dangerous. The trailer doesn't have brakes. Getting car on
the trailer could be difficult.

All in all, fix-and-drive will be best, IF it works.

I was afflicted by a bad case of the poors at the time, but I often wish

A 8 year old Benz is more valuable than a 18 year old Benz, I would

Re: [MBZ] Stupid neighbors

2020-09-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
For what it’s worth, several of the locating “pins” on my property consist of
fasteners with what appear to be washers around them driven into the concrete
driveway or sidewalk, so it would be difficult at best to remove them. I was
present when they surveyed my lot, and I had to get a neighbor to move their
kid’s car that was parked in the driveway at the time because one of the pins
was under it.

The floor damage was 100% from the improper washing machine connection and the
broken toilet. Otherwise under the house is bone dry. It’s not so much the
house but him creating a river across the driveway and back yard. Even with the
drainage before he was there during a super heavy long period of rain it would
do that. 95% of the rains were handled just fine with the drainage.

The problem is that if there is any encroachment on property lines, that
will be an issue for the closing. Title survey will most likely identify

I’m with Rick. I can’t imagine the gains you’ll have over three years after you
deduct the costs you’re incurring now (and maybe again in three years).

I don’t know what the market is doing where you are, but around here there are
severe inventory constraints, meaning people are bidding up prices on listings
when they come on the market. In your case you might be in a similar situation
with people wanting to flee the city. Does the place have good broadband?
That’s a must if you go that route.

You really need to dump this house.

I know, the plan is three years. In three years, you're going to be doing
this... again. Home buyers want fresh paint, fresh carpet, fresh appliances,
fresh landscaping, etc. Do it now, sell it and be done. If property values drop
again, you'll be waiting another several years for a rebound.

[MBZ] Stupid neighbors

2020-09-06 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So at Okie Acres 1 aka rental house, a dude from Shitcago just built a house on
the lot next door. I think I already talked about how he built his privacy
fence at least 1-2 feet on my side. Since I have been over there all the time I
observed he had an in ground pool and the whole area is built up probably a
good 3-5 feet higher than our side. In other words I hate to see what happens
when we get a lot of rain. Just on our side of the property line is a drainage
swell that drains water toward the road from the back side of the peppery that
comes down the hill from his side. It’s uphill that direction anyway before he
built up his back yard. His fence is built right in the middle of this swell.
Today I discovered he has a 500 gallon propane tank installed right up next to
my fence. Per code it must be located at least 10 feet away from any building
or property line.

I think tomorrow, or next time I see the guy, I’m going to point this out as

[MBZ] Stupid people

2020-02-28 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Today I was at Copart in the loading area to pickup a car. Normally
people who are waiting to load pull up in the area and sort of stay out
of other's way who are also loading, leaving enough room for them to get
their trailer loaded.  I park out of the way then another guy pulls in
the side of me.  He asks if I have enough room.  I say yes.  A few
minutes later a transport pulls in and goes to the end of the lot to
turn around to get lined up.  I see the moron pull in right behind me.
Keep in mind this is a huge loading area with plenty of room.  2 idiots
get out and start walking toward the office which takes them past my
vehicle.  I get out and walk back to my trailer and tell them they
didn't leave me any room to get loaded.  The one idiot then asks oh are
they loading you from the back?  No kidding dude.  I tell him I will
just have to pull forward I guess and also tell him that normally people
do not park right behind other people and leave room for others to
load.  They go in and come back out.  The idiot gets back in his truck
and starts backing it around to jackknife his trailer so the front of it
is open to be able to load a vehicle on the top front.  In the process
of doing this he has blocked the whole  area behind me so nobody else
can get thru.  Dude shows up with my car on the big fork lift to drop it
on my trailer.  There was room behind me but the fork lift driver had to
really jack around to get lined up with the back of my trailer and even
then was not able to get it on the trailer straight.  Later on moron
pulls  in a box truck for some reason and blocked the entrance to the
loading area.  I don't get it.

Sorry, i only got as far as the web link

The selection of diesel W126 around here is sparse. I have contacted most of
the possible engine donors. The DD on CL are looking for more cash than I
think they are worth. I also already have a can of worms. I do not need to
start over with another can.

Until the motor gets torn down, we will not know exactly what went wrong. I am
thinking, since it will not crank over by hand, that the crank or rods lost
lube after 480k miles and welded it self. Or piston #1 lost lube and got
stuck. No over heating based on gauges. Oil pressure was pegged, and I had
just filled the tank a few miles before. I made it 22 miles down the freeway
before failure that morning.

Maybe it can be used as a core for Metric as there is nothing burst through the
block.

Three weeks dead. With luck I can get it back on the road before the end of
the year.

A decent running engine is going to far exceed the current ability of the block
in Allen. IT would be nicer to be able to drop it in, but higher miles engine
might end up getting refurbishment.

I am thinking I should have done that to Allen, as the car has 483k on the
clock. Probably a bit past when it should have gotten deeper attention to wear
items and issues. Would have resolved blow by as well as smoking.

Most expensive engine on Car-part.com is $1000. Cheapest is $600. One
from an SD at Chehalis, WA for $775 People asking stupid prices on
fleabay, but many are engine/trans together.

Many many others on car-part.com with prices unlisted. This means
negotiable, or they are crazy. If you call around, you can find a deal
for a good engine.

Or look for another free SD.

What was the cause of death of the OM617?
