Re: [MBZ] Jetta TDI 5 speed wagon on BAT

Same year as Angie's Golf although hers has the BEW "Pump deuce" engine and I
think this is an older VE type. I prefer the older engine although I guess the
BEW can make more serious power. In any case a stage 1 tune takes it to 110hp
for about $300. Totally worth it, it's the tune the Euro engines already have
That price is absurd, the car looks nice but not that nice... Gen 4 cars are
getting a little hard for find but they're still around.

Re: [MBZ] Jetta TDI 5 speed wagon on BAT

2024-04-27 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I would have been interested but not at the price it sold for. $15K for a 20
year old VW is putting more faith in VW parts than I have.

My Jetta was leaking rain into the interior and various fluids from the engine
by that age. It ran great, it just had a lot of minor problems with anything
made of rubber or plastic.

I have never owned one, but I have looked at them a lot as I really like the
TDI wagons.

Everything I heard and researched indicated that oil is especially critical in
their smaller gas engines, although the diesels don't appear to be immune. This
was the one issue that kept me from considering a couple of potential cars. No
maintenance history, no purchase.

I found the same to be true with the Passats, too.

 If
 I had a 2004 or later I'd agree with you but I don't, its a '98, AHU
engine, 505.00 which apparently M1 5w40 still doesn't meet although its
 CI-4 Plus and ACEA E7/E5...

 A little googling shows an
interesting disagreement around the interwebs. Apparently although M1
5w40 doesn't meet 505.1 it might just be a failure of anybody to
actually test it against 505.1. It seems some enthusiasts don't trust
5w30 to protect the cam and are using 5w40 because of its higher sheer
strength. It'd be interesting to know why the 5w40 isn't 505.1

Any 505.1 5w40 oils are EXPENSIVE, like $10/qt...

If the 240D was okay I wouldn't have bought the Jetta...

Its back to square one, apparently the head was warped more than we thought. I
got about 40 miles out of it after we replaced the head gasket before it was
back to pushing coolant out again. I re-torqued the head and it was fine for
100 miles. I re-torqued again but it didn't help.

Fred wants to pull the head again and have it machined. I'm pleased that the
Jetta looks to require less work than I'd originally counted on (although the
battery is expensive, about $150 which is the same as a grp 49 for an MB and a
49 won't fit, which is terrible as I have a spare) so maybe...

My 2001 Beetle TDI has been completely trouble free. My oldest girl-child
has it in CA. She has put 58K miles on it since it's been new. She gets
about 45 mph driving like a girl around L.A.
All total, I've had a headlight bulb (a gawd awful job) replaced and a
backseat head rest replaced. That's it. When I get it back in a week or so
(when she goes off to the UK for four months) I'm going to get the timing
belt done, in accordance with VWs schedule.

Yes indeed. That is why I specified rust free.

I almost bought one back in (I think) the late 70s, when they first came
out. I test drove one all over for quite a while and the needle on the fuel
indicator didn't budge -- and no, it was not on full, it was on half tank.

I think a diesel would be too noisy in a convertible. In particular,
the VW diesels generate an amazing amount of intake noise at higher RPM,
and that would get old in a hurry on the freeway. Also, the early 1.5L
diesels had chronic head gasket problems.

I've worked on the 8-valve gasoline engines, and while they don't have
the stoutness of the diesels, they're still a pretty sturdy item. CIS
gets a bad name, but it's actually a pretty reliable system that
requires very little attention.

Actually, in Iowa snows I prefer a hardtop.

Yeah, when I lived in Michigan I felt that way too. There was the snow
in the winter, and then in the summer it was too muggy to drive without
the A/C on.

Try 60 mpg with a manual tranny. That's what i used to get consistantly
with my old VW rabbit diesel 4 door on a regular 40 mile commute on a 2
lane road in the country with no traffic ( that was running a steady 55
mph, any faster...and it wouldn't go much faster, and the mileage would
drop)

Loved that car.
