Glad the 124 is in good hands. That was a beautiful car. I need some free time - I don't suppose Wilton left a crate in the back? Re: [MBZ] NC mini Q
What Dan said. It uses vacuum from the pump, turbo boost and throttle position to modulate the vacuum signal to the transmission, and thereby soften shifts when the motor is not making full power/torque. Having it at full pressure all the time makes for ugly clunk on the 3-2 downshift, for instance, or when shifting to reverse from forward gears. And they have been NLA for years, but almost never failed. Re: [MBZ] NC mini Q
Had my Klima checked by Programa and they said it had an intermittent clutch circuit, which is one of the biggest reasons for their rejection for a repair according to them. They didn’t elaborate on their test protocol, but since they’re covering the warranty, I’m comfortable with their diagnosis. I’m still working off my “poor man’s KLIMA” while my cruise control guy digs into it to see if he can figure out why it’s acting that way. Ironic that the engine compartment was absolutely spotless and new-looking when I got the car 12 years ago, and I had tried to keep it reasonably clean (much more so than what we often/usually see), the appraiser gave me no + for it - 'said it is "dirty and greasy." The only leaks I ever had were the occasional minor ones from injector return lines, a small amount at top of injector pump years ago and the PS hose recently. Re: [MBZ] NC mini Q
At night with a flashlight, didn't look too bad at all under the hood, but I didn't really look that closely. The cross-over pipe and intake manifold looked spotless, side of the injection pump was very clean as well. Front of the engine is a mess, but I don't think there was motor oil sprayed there. As Rich said, the power steering pump took a hit and broke off the reservoir, so power steering fluid was dumped all over. The right side windshield molding is knocked off, like maybe the rear corner of the hood hit it. Windshield is not scratched, and I may try to remove that and have it installed on my '95 sedan, which has a cracked windshield. - Max Charleston SC On Tue, May 17, 2016 at 11:47 AM, WILTON via Mercedes wrote: > Did the black oil spray onto everything under the hood? I'd bet the engine runs fine. It was at very high rev for only very short time - maybe 5 seconds or so. I was reaching for key to turn it off immediately as I stopped. I was still holding brake on HARD to try to tame it, but my foot must have been askew on the pedal so that I was pressing on accelerator, too. I got to thinking that it was never opened given how the latch pin was bent and the latch still intact, never could have got it together like that closing it. $20 HF recip saw cut right through it though, "soft" steel which also deformed but stayed intact. Good German chinee steel and engineering! It is rather impressive, the hit was just in front of the left front wheel and pushed the left front fender/frame over maybe 6-8" while the RF is pushed over maybe 3". The engine looks moved asunder laterally a coupla inches too, will have to look to see if nothing is broken in there but probably just the frame deformation. Looks like the LF strut top was pushed off the upper fender mount, hence the LF wheel knocked over. Wheel/tire is fine, just the strut mount, looks like Max has a good set of spares. The PS pump/reservoir was broken from the front sheet metal hitting it but nothing else behind looks affected. The oil cooler is broken off and one line sheared. We were hoping the engine is OK in that it did not run long without oil as there is none on the dipstick. probably fine, Max is going to get some oil and bypass the cooler and get it going to make sure. Nothing behind the firewall is deformed, I guess that is the design for the front to crush/deform leaving the passenger pod intact. In any case, somewhat impressive. Maybe we can just cut off the front, find another clip, and get the welder going... I'll take some pics later and send them along. Wilton if it is some consolation, even if you had been 0.1 second/4ft earlier getting in front of the idiot blowing the red light, you would have been well-protected in that car. Maybe a bit banged up but it clearly could have taken a more direct hit without compromising the pass compartment too much.
