Some dealers may be. Others like to jack up the prices of common warranty

Re: [MBZ] Rear brake calipers

2013-04-09 Thread Dan Penoff
My local dealer, MB of Tampa, has two different list prices. Consumer list,
which is for the typical walk in customer. This is somewhere around 1.5-2x
MBUSA list. Then they have wholesale list which is the real MBUSA list
price they discount off of for wholesale and trade accounts.

I typically get 20% off of wholesale list, although this can vary depending on
the type of part. Even when it is different, it's usually a higher discount, as
with things like coolant.

Having been in the service business both in manufacturing and distribution, I
am all too well acquainted with list prices and discount structures. It seems
like (in this case, at least) that an artificial list price has been created to
not only increase profit but also to give the consumer the idea that they are
getting a deal.

Re: [MBZ] Rear brake calipers

2013-04-09 Thread Dan Penoff
I have two dealers in relatively close proximity to me, however, I have only
dealt with one of them.

I don't think their pricing strategy is a whole lot different from any other
dealer in the sense that they are going to exploit the consumer as long as they
can get away with it. It's the nature of the business, I think.

That being said, if one asserts themselves and asks for a better price, I
firmly believe you will get it. Case in point:

I frequent the local Ford dealer for the Focuses that are/were in the family.
Nothing special, the occasional repair and regular FastLane oil changes and
tire rotations for $24.

The youngest is driving my former Focus wagon, and reported a possible bad rear
wheel bearing. The part, which can be bought as a complete assembly consisting
of the brake drum, hub, and bearing, runs around $109 list from the dealer,
pretty much the same from FLAPS. So I checked and the dealer had one on the
shelf, so I stopped to pick it up on the way home.

The parts manager was overseeing a new employee on the counter, who, despite
his best efforts, screwed up my invoice for $109 several times. They both
offered apologies for the mistake, which I blew off and assured them that I
didn't mind at all, and was more than willingly be a guinea pig of sorts for
this young man to learn the job.

While small talking with the parts manager I mentioned that I had been in the
service and parts business for 20 years and knew how important it was to have
well trained employees. At that point I asked him that as a long time customer
if I could be provided a discount on parts, as I would rather buy from them
than FLAPS.

So the manager is looking over the computer as the new counter guy is doing my
invoice for the umpteenth time and is telling him, No, not that - change it to
this or something to that effect.

I get the invoice and the total is something like $84. Now I get wholesale
pricing at Ford, too.

Sometimes you just have to ask.

Have you already replaced the hose? If you open the bleed valve, will brake
fluid flow out under pedal pressure?

I REALLY like the ceramic brake pads. Will never go back. Fantastic stopping
power, very very little dust. They seem a little extra strong when cold, a
good thing. Not quite grabby, but getting there.

Closest dealer is ~50 miles away and just about as inconvenient as possible.

My local CarQuest has high quality stuff (just today I put Moog sway bar links
and bushings on the Ranger) at good prices plus warranty is a snap since
they're right around the corner.

Their price on calipers got my attention, remans for $70 each, at that price I
won't bother to look anywhere else.
I know some guys hate remans (Hursty had some quite unkind words) but the set I
put on my '83 240D worked out just fine.

Regardless I intend to do the full Monty for the rear brakes, calipers, pads,
rotors. I'd like to do ceramic pads if they're available. Q got me some for
the front that are nice, no squeaks, squeals or dust.

Re: [MBZ] Rear brake calipers

2013-04-08 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Sometimes remans are the only way to go. I just did all four calipers on
my '95 E320 wagon. The front listed for $1000 each for new! Rebuilt from
Gary were less than 10% of that. So, the choice was clear. Just keep an
eye on on them first week or two to make sure they're not leaking.

Funny thing about those wagon calipers... it seems they're 94 or 95 only,
and wagon only. I was luck to get rebuilds considering how rare they are!

Closest dealer is ~50 miles away and just about as inconvenient as
 possible.

My local CarQuest has high quality stuff (just today I put Moog sway bar
links and bushings on the Ranger) at good prices plus warranty is a snap
since they're right around the corner.

Their price on calipers got my attention, remans for $70 each, at that
price I won't bother to look anywhere else.
I know some guys hate remans (Hursty had some quite unkind words) but the
set I put on my '83 240D worked out just fine.

Check the stealership. They are surprisingly competitive on things like
 rotors and pads.

Rotors and pads for the front of my S500 are only a few dollars more than
the OE ones. Not only that, MB throws in the brake paste, too!

Or get the appropriate kit from new Q and reman them yourself - not that
difficult on a 201 - BTDT.
