This does look like there might be some bug. Before your 3.751 release, the
indexing permissions on that package were:

    Lab::Instrument::LabViewHeater,AKHUETTEL,c
    Lab::Instrument::LabViewHeater,SCHROEER,f

But now they’re listed as

    Lab::Instrument::LabViewHeater,SCHROEER,f

We previously had a bug which manifested a bit like this, but it was fixed last
year, and we’ve not seen something like this since. I’ll open a new bug for
this.

I’ve put the permission back, and will force a re-indexing on your release
right after this email, so we can see if it works this time, or whether your
co-maint will disappear again. You’ll get a confirmation of the re-indexing
from PAUSE, and then the result of the re-indexing within an hour.

Given that he’s responded recently, to say that he doesn’t want to give
co-maint, but hopes to do a release in a month or two, then we cannot do a
"forced adoption".

I understand your frustration, but everyone is a volunteer, and has to fit Perl
work in around their other commitments, which for all of us can ebb and flow.

I see that you’ve released your own fork. In the meantime, please be patient.
In time he may realise that he’s not going to get to it, and will then be open
to granting to co-maint. I’ve had that happen to me multiple times over the
years. And I’ve been on the other side too: where I do really want to keep
maintaining something, but eventually realise I have to let it go.

2021-05-09 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hayashi-san,

When you get an error message like this from PAUSE, the first thing to try is a
2nd attempt at indexing.

You can request this yourself, via the web interface: select "Force Reindexing"
in the left sidebar, click the checkbox next to the tarball for your release,
and then click on the Reindex button. The reindexing will be scheduled, and
will happen within the hour. You’ll get another email from PAUSE with the
results.

But this time I have triggered the re-indexing for you.

In return, can I ask that you delete your old files from your author directory
on PAUSE please? You’ll find "Delete Files" near the top of the left sidebar.

Thanks,
Neil

There are 6 bugs open, but the one we’re keen to see a fix for is this one:

Hi Mark,

When this happens, you can ask PAUSE to have another go at indexing your
release. In nearly every case (where you get the "timeout" error message) this
will sort it.

When you log into PAUSE, you’ll see "Force Reindexing" in the sidebar; clicking
on that will show a list of the files in your author directory. Click on the
checkbox next to your tarball and then click on the "Reindex" button.

Next time you’ll know, but for this time I’ll give you a free re-indexing —
you’ll get a message soon after this one, saying that I triggered a reindexing.
It will be scheduled within the hour, and then you’ll get the results.

Ah, Checking META.json for 2.2013, these four packages were all excluded from
indexing by the no_index.

So I don’t think this was down to a PAUSE bug. My guess is that the packages
already had indexing permissions (either from earlier releases, not necessarily
of Moose), but were being ignored by the PAUSE indexer because of the no_index.

When no_index was changed, PAUSE would have considered them for indexing. And
because they already had indexing permissions, PAUSE wouldn’t try and enforce
the recent rules on consistent permissions — that applies to packages that
don’t have any indexing permissions.

Neil

Split first-come permissions Trouble

2021-04-06 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hi,

I’ve got a script that tells me if a distribution ends up with split first-come
permissions.

Moose now has this, as a result of the following packages, which have PERIGRIN
as first-come:

    Moose::Util::TypeConstraints::Builtins
    Moose::Meta::Method::Accessor::Native::Array::first_index
    Moose::Meta::Method::Accessor::Native::Hash::shallow_clone
    Moose::Meta::Method::Accessor::Native::Array::shallow_clone

This usually happens when a distribution is subsumed by a bigger one.

Assuming the right fix here is for PERIGRIN to transfer first-come to STEVAN,
but wanted to check with you first. You can make the move Chris, or I’m happy
to do it for you.

Re: Please give me COMAINT on https://metacpan.org/release/pyperl

2021-04-04 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hi Shlomi,

I’ve given you first-come on the PAUSE indexing permissions for pyperl, and
dropped GAAS, as per Gisle’s wishes.

Please note:

The distribution doesn’t include a "pyperl" package, but PAUSE now requires
that someone releasing a distribution has an indexing permission on the package
name corresponding to the distribution name.

So you now have first-come on "pyperl" as well. At the moment PAUSE has a
bug[1] whereby if you were to give someone co-maint on this distribution, PAUSE
wouldn't give them co-maint on pyperl, and as a result any of their releases
wouldn't be indexed.

Until that bug gets fixed, you either need to remember this – should you want
to give someone co-maint – or add a pyperl package to the distribution.

Cheers,
Neil

It looks like when you were given co-maint on the
Search-Elasticsearch-Client-7_0 distribution, you didn’t get co-maint on the
Search::Elasticsearch::Client::7_0::Role::Bulk package.

I’ve just given you co-maint.

Because you didn’t have an indexing permission on that one package, it means
that the CPAN Index lists just that one package against the previous release
(7.711 rather than 7.712). This shouldn’t be a problem, and when you do the
7.713 release, everything should be indexed just fine.

Happy to go into this in more details, if the above is a bit opaque.

2021-03-08 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hi Steve,

Sorry we hadn’t got back to you before now.

The problem here was the "provides" section in META.yml. Because it’s missing
the file: line for each module, it’s now considered an invalid metadata file.
So CPAN::Meta refuses to load it. When that happens, MetaCPAN construct a new
metadata file for the distribution, which ends up pulling all of the packages
found in the tarball.

You don’t have permissions on all of them (because PAUSE thinks they’re not
candidates for indexing).

Andreas and I have been emailing back and forth trying to agree the right /
best way to resolve this.

The cleanest way would be for you to do a new release that has a valid
META.yml. If that’s not possible at the moment, Andreas and I will resolve it
another way for now, and you can fix META.yml for your next release.

Cheers,

Ah.  When I gave you co-maint, it didn’t give you co-maint on all the packages.
I’ll go through them one-by-one tonight, and fix this. I’ll shout when it’s all
sorted.

That was my guess too, when looking at it last night. But then I noticed that
the .13 release is similar, so I decided to sleep on it.

I just looked at the Changes file for CPAN::Meta, and there have been some
changes / bug fixes related to handling of provides. So maybe the version being
used by PAUSE when the .13 release was fine with that?

I just checked the spec (CPAN::Meta::Spec), which says that the "file" key is
required (https://metacpan.org/pod/CPAN::Meta::Spec#file1). Can you do a .16
release please Steve, with a file: key for each module listed in the provides:
section.

Re: Failed: PAUSE indexer report SHAY/libapreq2-2.15.tar.gz

2021-03-01 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hi Steve,

Ah, I forgot to mention — you’ll need to force PAUSE to re-index the tarball
you uploaded.

When you log in to PAUSE, in the life sidebar you’ll see "Force Reindexing",
under "Utils" (3rd section). When you click on that you’ll get a list of the
files in your upload directory. Click the checkbox next to
libapreq2-2.15.tar.gz and then click on "Reindex". You’ll get an email within
the hour with the results of the reindexing.

That will make your release appear in the CPAN Index. MetaCPAN will need to
reindex it as well — I’ll give them a nudge once your reindexing is done.

Cheers,
Neil

Hi Steve,

I’ve just given you co-maint on libapreq2. That includes all the packages in
the distribution, and the pseudo-package "libapreq2", permissions on which are
required for you to do a release.

Neil

Re: Algorithm-SkipList

2021-02-26 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hi John,

TL;DR: I’ve transferred the first-come permissions on Algorithm-SkipList to you.

I’m one of the PAUSE admins.

> Rothenburg (although it is marked for adoption, see
> ).

As Dan Book pointed out, when you search for a module on CPAN, by default
you’re shown the release that’s in the CPAN Index. Usually that’s the most
recent release, but it might not be (for example developer releases don’t go in
the index, and if the uploader didn’t have any indexing permission(s), then it
would also not be indexed). And the person listed against it is the person who
uploaded it.

> What is the process for adoption, assuming that RRWO is amenable?

Given it’s marked as ADOPTME, the process is that you ask the PAUSE admins, and
it’s polite to ask for the blessing of the previous owner (and Robert has given
that). If the distribution is depended on by a lot of other CPAN modules, then
we’ll consider whether you’re the right person to take it on, or at least that
you’re aware that releasing a broken version could result in a cascade of
failures. If you hover over the bars next to the distribution name, you’ll see
that two distributions depend on this, which isn’t concerning.

So I’ve transferred first-come from ADOPTME to you, for all the modules in the
distribution. Thanks for taking this on.

Final point: when you submit requests like these, please include your PAUSE id.
I hope JGAMBLE was the right John Gamble? ;-)

Cheers,
Neil

I’ve just transferred the first-come permission to BLAINEM.

Apologies for the delay — you have adopted a number of distributions recently,
and without a CPAN track record I wanted to do a bit of due diligence. You
checked out ;-)

Re: Fw: PAUSE indexer report BSHIELDS/Data-QuickMemoPlus-Reader-0.07.tar.gz

2021-02-11 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hi Brent,

I think the problem is the following, which is in the metadata:

   "provides" : {
      "Data::QuickMemoPlus::Reader" : {
         "file" : "lib/Data\\QuickMemoPlus\\Reader.pm",
         "version" : "0.08"
      }
   },

That path is probably confusing metacpan. I’m not familiar with Minilla, so
you’ll need to look into how it generates the metadata files, as the path is
wrong in both of them.

Neil

Re: Issue in XML::SimpleObject::LibXML Author DBRIAN not reachable

2021-02-05 Thread Neil Bowers via modules
Hi Roman,

I feel I found an issue in  XML::SimpleObject::LibXML 0.60 in combination with
perl 5.6 and XML::LibXML (will have to look up the version).

I was able to do a quick fix for me.
Perl is used in our build system for embedded firmware. Hence I am not a Perl
professional.

The bug tracker is to be closed down soon. The author did not react on my
email. The module has not been maintained for some 16 years.

In cases like this, I generally do the following:

1. I have a look at the author’s page on MetaCPAN
(https://metacpan.org/author/DBRIAN), to see if they released anything
recently. Danny last released something in 2014.
2. I have a look at the list of bugs, so see if there’s much recent action.
There isn’t.
3. I check whether there are other modules dependent on this module — if so,
there may be other people who are interested in seeing it fixed.  This is the
graphic with grey/blue bars, next to the distribution name. There aren’t any.
4. Then I’ll try emailing the author at the email address shown on MetaCPAN
(dbr...@cpan.org). If it bounces, that’s one thing. If there’s no reply, it
might be going to an unread mailbox, or maybe he’s moved on and is no longer
interested in Perl. In which case, you need to make your email really easy for
him to reply to.
5. Search for his name on github, and see whether (a) he has a repo for the
module you’re interested in, or (b) whether there are signs of recent activity.
6. You could email him with a suggested bugfix. If that doesn’t get a reply,
and doesn’t bounce, then you could email asking if he’d be happy to give you
co-maint permission on the module, so you can do a bugfix release.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Neil

Please send separate emails to the authors of these modules, copying in
modules@perl.org, so we have an audit trail. You may find that copying us in
prompts a response. If not, I will try and contact the authors as well.

If those steps fail, then we’ll consider giving you co-maint. Please look at
the number of downstream distributions when making your case.

POE::Component::Server::AsyncEndpoint is marked ADOPTME, so you can take

But I can’t find a PAUSE account for you — do you have one?

If not, you’ll need to go to pause.perl.org and sign up for an account first.
