[MOPO] Stolen Posters - Please keep an eye out - Hour Before the Dawn Australian One Sheet

2016-08-26 Thread Vesna B
Hi All,

As previously posted a few posters have been stolen in transit from a collector.

He has asked that I post the images of the posters here on MOPO too.

If you could keep your eyes and ears open, it would be greatly appreciated.

The most likely to stand out is the Australian One Sheet for The Hours Before
The Dawn.

You can get in touch with myself, and I will pass on to him your details.

Thanking you all in advance

Cheers,

Vesna

The following three linenbacked and freshly restored posters were stolen during
transit through either the USPS or Canada Post mail service between August
15-22, 2016. I would greatly appreciate contact via private message or e-mail
or even a forum post should you believe you have been offered the posters or
spotted them for sale/auction in the future. Again, I am indebted to anyone
who may be able to assist in their recovery.

Re: [MOPO] [MOPO] Ebay-ponderings

2016-02-24 Thread Vesna B
I find this usually happens if you are searching via an ebay site different to
the one the items are listed on.

For example, I use ebay AU, so some of the stuff listed by people on ebay US
won't show, unless I log in to the US site.

That items do not show up in search results seems a common problem on ebay.

If you are registered outside of the US, ebay does not show you any items from
sellers who ship to the US only. These will not show in any of your search
results.

Yet, even if you are registered in the US or the seller ships worldwide, I
frequently notice that I get zero results in 'Seller's other items', even
though listings from this seller do appear in the 'You may also like' view.
Listings from these sellers also do not show up in any of my searches. This is
a problem that I have noticed for at least a year, so ebay must be aware of
this.

Here's an example:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/dbd19508/m.html?item=191810394512=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

I KNOW this seller has several active listings, since I'm watching them. Yet,
when I click this link, I get zero results, same for his completed listings. I
am logged in with an account registered to a US address.

Please give it a try, everybody, let me know if you get any results from this
link.

Helmut

Hi all, I kind of hate Ebay, too much work and time wasted looking at a bloody
computer all of the time, but the times I get over it I list some stuff here
and there.

The point is this: a few days ago Dave promoted a few of his stills. he said he
listed 30. As i click the link I see only 4 and can't find more even when i
click "more by these seller". Same thing happened when somebody else (Tait i
believe) promoted lobby cards for Our Gang and others. You click the link and
the page is empty.

Has anyone else encountered this and/or has an explanation for this?

I listed 5 different lots of John Wayne photos as an experiment as I generally
generate way less views as i used to have on my listings. Thought process being
that if one lot has interest, the other wayne lots should generate something
similar. After three days It does not.

Any thoughts?

El Cartel de Cine en Espana. http://www.ebay.com/itm/261064666354 I think that
this book is OOP. Its in Spanish and contains an English translation, and many
awesome photos. MPA seems to have listed 10 copies. I bought 1 and have just

Re: [MOPO] eBay worries..

2011-10-05 Thread Vesna B

I don't understand why you wouldn't start them at a price you are not
comfortable receiving.
If you are not prepared to sell it for 40, don't list it for 40. You always
take a risk of getting less than you want doing so.

Anywho, most (if not all) ebay buyers these days snipe, so you are highly
unlikely to see any action until you get to the last few seconds before they
end.
And us poster collecting vultures even wait until after the auction ends to
say, see it didn't sell...why not sell to me for 30.

So, it's a catch 22...if you end them early, you miss out the bids most likely
to come right at the end of the auction.
If you don't end them early, you risk em selling for below what you are willing
to let them go for :(

Why not list them at a fixed price, and provide the best offer option?
Post links to your auctions on the various movie poster forums...

My two cents,
Vesna

 Hey guys...

I've put several posters up on eBay which I KNOW are worth a bundle

Although I know they are worth more, I started the bidding at about £40.00
 GBP.

Now they HAVE attracted attention. I have received several private messages
asking to sell quick and end the auction (which I have respectfully
declined) and the top two currently have a lot of watchers... however they
have yet to attract a single bid.

My worry is that they will end up going for WAY under their selling price
due to the unpredictability of the eBay system.

Although it would protect my valuable posters, I was told that putting
reserves on posters can scare bidders away.

I'm even tempted to cancel the auction at the weekend, rather than lose my
valuable items to auction tactics. (I'm not being greedy... I just don't
 want to be ripped off)

Please give me some advice on this, as I'm NOT a dealer, but times are hard
and I need these posters to reach at least their average value!

 Cheers

Re: [MOPO] Grindhouse DS advance Dynamitevs. Pulp Fiction Lucky Strikes

2009-09-15 Thread Vesna B

I too heard the poster got pulled because of the time tagline. I seem to
recall a seller on ebay had quite a few that were snapped up when the news
about the flop and recall hit the streets.

The aussie release poster has the Together in one smash explosive show
tagline.

As the Grindhouse double feature never really had a proper theatrical release
here, because it did so badly in the US, you might argue it (and any other
posters from around the world in the same boat) are rarer still. A poster for
a film that never really was officially released in that country. Although,
Grindhouse does get an occassional run at arthuse cinema now, but no major aus
wide release I am aware of.

If I recall Planet Terror saw no release in Australia (at least that I am aware
of) but Death Proof did.

I do think Phil is right re value. Other than the Tarantino die hard fans I
can't see too many people interested in that one. Pulp Fiction would have a
whole other set of followers apart from the Tarantino fan base.

And I agree with Phil regarding the movies themselves...couldn't have said it
better myself...

Steve -

Doesn't ring a bell with me as such. It may be more rare (as in availability)
than the Lucky Strikes PF, but in this case more rare will not equate with more
value exept to aTarantino fanatic.
PULP FICTION was a very successful film that delveloped an enormous and ongoing
following and fan base.

GRINDHOUSE was a monster flop and doesn't show any signs of being re-evaluated
anytime soon.

In Australia, the film was released as two separate films some time apart, and
both some time after the US release. I'm not even sure the PLANET TERROR
feature had other than a
brief contractual theatrical before going to DVD where it has developed a bit
of a cult. DEATH PROOF was dead in the water once the Tarantino die hards
lapped it up in the first week.
The GRINDHOUSE double feature cut had very limited theatrical showings in
specialist theatres here, after the event.

Perhaps another Australian MOPOer can detail what was on the Australian
GRINDHOUSE one sheets that showed up before the film went its separate ways
here.

I'd be also intersted to know what happened to the release in other non-US
territories, and with the paper as well.

Personally, I thought DEATH PROOF was considerably better than advance press
had it, but with too many overlong and not terribly good dialogue scenes.
PLANET TERROR
was one of the funniest splatterfests I have seen in some time.

I have had this question bugging me for more years (ok, just a couple) than I
care to admit. And whatever the answer, I still regret losing my copy.

When Grindhouse first came out, there were a total of three, yes only three,
auctions for a very specific onesheet. All three ended quickly and quietly,
and I think only one of them made it to the actual close date without being
closed early (first sign of mystery).

These posters were double-sided, and featured the 2 1/2 hours of pure
dynamite! tagline. Now all other original, double-sided Grindhouse posters
that I have EVER seen, and believe me, I have looked forever, have the tagline
Two great movies for the price of one!

There was speculation before these three onesheets went underground that these
were a first-run, onesheet that was recalled because the running time wound up
being released LONGER than 2 1/2 hours, making the tagline incorrect. Also
keep in mind that these posters were all up on eBay right as the movie was
released, or maybe just a little before, and I have never seen another since.

What I would like to put to this crowd, probably the most educated dealers in
the world, is the following question:

If these posters were in fact recalled, original DS onesheets, wouldn't the
limited nature of the poster count actually make this the rarest Tarantino
poster ever printed, even pushing out the Pulp Fiction recalled Lucky Strikes
(and also by an incredible margin)? And does anyone else have this poster in
their inventory/collection that can add to this discussion?

I don't remember if I got a pic of mine before I lost it. I suspect I had it
in a tube for storage and mailed another poster out to some lucky Basterd (yes,
I went there) to discover. But I can look if anyone's interested.

Would just like to hear some opinions on this one, and actually get a topic
going that doesn't deal with fraud or criminal investigations.

Re: [MOPO] Our very first Alamo Drafthouse poster!; What is YOUR opinion of these posters?

2009-06-07 Thread Vesna B

Hi John,

Story goes that the films producers went to Stout to design the poster to help
get the movie made/released.

Hence Alamo and theatrical release posters are the same design.

Shame the movie sucked big time...

Looks like the same poster art that was used for the DS 27 x 40 to me. Also
used for the DVD cover.
Note the art of David Carradine on the upper left of the poster.

After auctioning around 400,000 items, we finally are auctioning our very first
Alamo Drafthouse poster! For those of you who don't know, the Alamo Drafthouse
is a restaurant/theater located in Austin, Texas. They create their own posters
for showings of movies. The posters are produced in limited numbers and are
known for their different, really cool artwork.

The one we are currently auctioning is from Hell Ride, the 2008 Larry Bishop
motorcycle biker gang action adventure thriller (executive produced by Quentin
Tarantino) starring Larry Bishop, Michael Madsen, Eric Balefour, Vinnie Jones,
Leonor Varela, David Carradine, and Dennis Hopper. It features Tyler Stout art.

The item can be viewed at
http://auctions.emovieposter.com/Bidding.taf?_function=detailAuction_uid1=1433530

It will be interesting to see what it sells for. These ARE from actual showings
of the movie, so it seems they absolutely ARE movie posters, but some might
argue with that! What is YOUR opinion of these posters?

Re: [MOPO] Under-Declaration of Value on International Shipments

2008-10-14 Thread Vesna B

As primarily a buyer I will always ask the seller if they will under-declare
when sending the item here to Australia.
If they say no, no harm nor foul. And if they clearly state they will not do
so, I either don't purchase from them or factor in what it will cost me when I
make a bid or purchase.

When I do sell, I know some countries charge a customs duty so I will always
ask my buyer if they prefer it under-declared.
This is of course not possible should they want the item fully insured.
I understand that it's not the legal thing to do, but from where I sit, I
really see no harm in it.

I have to echo the observations of others where the items that seem to have
been opened and checked by customs here were the ones with a declaration on
them. My biggest concern with high value items is it will go missing in the
mail.

I once tried to find out how they determined the necessity of customs.
In Australia, I was told even if the parcel was marked a gift, if it were
opened they would still try to determine whether a charge applied.
It basically came down to a very subjective process where the person who was
doing the checking would determine if and what value should be assigned...most
likely someone who knew nothing about what was actually in the parcel.

I once had an issue where I sent some posters out of the country to be
linenbacked.
The value of the backing was what was declared on the parcel.
I had to argue for an hour with a woman at customs that the posters were
already my property, and had already been in the country...why should I have to
pay for their value again?

I don't see any problem with a seller NOT wanting to under-declare. It is your
choice.
But I also see no problem with a seller who is ok with under declaring.
Each to their own...

your actions that you must declare full value. In that case people

by customs if mailed through the regular postal service. They
probably figure that stuff inside tubes can not have a very high value.
Folded posters get picked out more often simply because the package is
larger. Customs also (almost) always checks packages shipped via UPS/DHL

total value of the package plus the shipping. This can be very
expensive. You can ask sellers to mark the packages as a gift with
a low value, but if they don't want to do this it's fine too. I usually
calculate in the extra 30%. Only with expensive orders I check
with the seller first. There are indeed a few ways that usually
trick customs. Marking the package as a gift with a low value or just
any other description with a low value (almost) always works. One
seller I know marks the packages as Commercial Samples (something like
this can be found on the shipping or customs forms) with the full
value. Describing the items as Used Posters, Printed Matter,

Hi Jeff,

First of all, I'm very jealous of your lon chaney one-sheets! I've been
trying to get me hands on any lon chaney sr. paper for a while. There are
3 restorers I've used in Los Angeles. Jaime Mendez is amazing and is just
outside of LA. Also Sylvia is wonderful and I usually go through Sue Heim
for her. And I've gone to Igor Edelman. Igor is gone now but I think the
work at the shop is still quite good.

Jaime's website is www.restorationbyjm.com

Igor Edelman's studio is on Robertson Blvd.

Hope this helps and welcome!

Re: [MOPO] Collectibility of Australian Daybills

2006-11-27 Thread Vesna B

Hi Mike,

When you say reprinted daybills, are you talking reproductions?
I am told there might be reproductions of the aussie daybills for the
re-release of Day The Earth Stood Still. However I haven't seen one yet.
Re-prints - there are a number of daybills that got a later re-print when
they were re-released for a later screen date.

As for their collectability...I collect primarily daybills, and of all the
poster formats, they are my favourite. You are very correct in terms of the
quality of them...though this is not true across the board...there are some
simply stunning titles, and there are some very shocking ones too...so ugly.

The paper is much thinner than it's US counterparts, but it also makes the
paper more forgiving. if you have an aussie daybills with it's standard
fold lines, store it flat for a while and the folds virtually disappear, not
something that is always true of the thicker paper. Like your inserts
they're also easier and cheaper to frame...can put more up!

The earlier daybills says 20s to 40s have some of the most beautiful artwork
for titles seen. RKO and Richardson studio daybills are two examples of
this...
Dealers can chime in on the value of them, but I would think that for the
bigger name titles, they would still command significant prices...

Cheers,
Vesna

Morning everyone,

Considering no one bothered to reply to my last question of whether there

question.

I am curious to hear your thoughts on the collectibility of Australian
Daybills - how desirable are they and for which titles in particular. Being
mostly an insert collector myself, I really like how the more desirable
U.S. one-sheet images are used for the 13x30 daybills such as the Brando
red-silouette international image used for the The Godfather, the German
Amsel image used for Chinatown, the chase image from Butch Cassidy, the
Peel art from Taxi Driver, etc. I suppose the only down-side is the poor
print and paper quality when compared to the U.S. material.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks
Mike

Some notes on the Lobby Cards of Taxi Driver:

1. A Lobby Card SET for Taxi Driver always contains 8 lobby cards.
However,
2. There are DEFINITELY more than 8 different cards in existence! In
other words, not all sets will always contain the very same cards.
3. How many different cards are there? I believe there are 10 different
scenes.
There are 2 different #4, and 2 different #6. In addition to that, #2
sometimes has no number at all.
4. Some cards appear to be harder to find. I'm trying not to use the word
rare.
5. This anomaly is rare but not unique. Godfather 2, and Annie Hall are 2
other examples.

6. I don't know what the reason for that is.
7. There are definitely 2 different types of fonts, in the bottom margin,
in existence.
8. Are there repros of this title in the market? I am not sure, but I
wouldn't be surprised.

So true...mine would probably be (thanks to a great MOPO member) an aussie
daybill for The Way Of All Flesh, a gorgeous Richardson Studio piece. I
didn't even know it existed, until I was offered the poster, and now it's
one of my favourite posters.

Sometimes the best poster find doesn't relate to dollar value at all.
Finding a bargain (i.e. a valuable poster at a cheap price) has never
compared - for me at least - finding something of rarity and interest, or a
piece that has some sort of particular personal appeal. Sometimes the two
go together. They don't always have to.

2006-08-27 Thread Vesna B

Walter,

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on ebay about being able to make a
complaint about unreasonable shipping charges.
If I can find that information again, I'll post a link, but perhaps someone
else on the list has more details...

Vesna

I bought 11 TV scripts from an ebay seller today, named bravo_george
He listed the shipping charge as $7 for script, but he is now refusing to
combine shipping and insisting that I pay him $91 for shipping them in one
parcel.
and what makes this more infuriating---he is about three miles from me but
is refusing to let me pick them up in person,
Do ebay rules about screwing people on shipping charges apply in this case?
And, if they do, how do I ask that they be enforced?
No, I did not ask him in advance because I could not have conceived of
something so idiotic.

Re: [MOPO] The MoPo Playground

2006-08-26 Thread Vesna B
When you join MOPO or any on-line group for that matter, I assume that you
do so for public discussions on whatever the subject matter may be.
Just because I have to provide my email address to join the group, does not
give any member of that group the permission or right to use it as a means
of privately attacking me.
I find it disappointing that people feel attacking members with private
emails is an acceptable means of communicating. That some people find the
act of forwarding such private emails more offensive than actually sending
them, is beyond me.
I assume that when you signed up for the list, you signed up for PUBLIC
discussion, not for PRIVATE attacks.
The person doing the private email attacking wouldn't have your email
address, if it weren't for the list. They have taken your personal
information (your email address) and used it for a purpose it was not
intended when it was given.

As for the suggestions about changing posting to the list, I am happy to
roll along with whatever decision Scott makes. I am more than capable of
using my common sense to ensure any private attacks end up where they
belong, and as I don't use the list as a means of being able to attack
anyone off list, a change would have no effect to my posting habits...

I think he means that considering some of the BIDDERS on this poster, are we
likely to see a run of MINTY WHITE ones on this title too?

I don't think he meant anything untoward regarding David at all...

Steve,

Not sure what you're on about by sending us this link... are you intimating
that David Lieberman of Cinemasterpieces.com, who is selling this poster,
is offering a repro as an original? Surely, you're aware that Dave is
highly respected in the community and has been one of the few people
besides Dan to publish detailed and authoritative articles on his website
about the minty white inserts, STAR WARS and PULP FICTION repros and many
other issues? Please see:

... so what are you saying in this post?

Are we going to start seeing minty white Alien advances on the market soon?

Seems no one is apparently too worried about it, cause this is the land of
the almighty dollar!

This is exactly how these things start - a nice, rolled copy of an original
poster gets in the hands of someone without any scruples, and Bam! Now
we're looking at more GAU logos through microscopes. Sigh.
