Re: [MOPO] continuing aol problems
Lenny, *sigh* The reason you don't have trouble with AOL is because youhave anAOL address and so when you send a message to another AOL address it gets through, no problem. The people who are having all the problems with AOL are the ones who DON'T have AOL addresses -- they can't get through to AOL users half the time because of AOL's over-active spam fiters and the way AOL randomly fails to deliver a large number of messages from non-AOL addresses. There's discrimination at work all right -- but it is AOL discriminating against those who don't choose pay for an AOL address. If you really want to know the kind of hell AOL is putting other people through... people who are forced to do try and business with AOL users because the AOL users win their auctions... or non-sellers who are just trying to reach their friends whohave AOL addresses... then scroll through the MOPO archives for the past two weeks -- you'll find horror story after horror story detailing the problems people regularly havetrying to communicate withAOL users in recent months.. This argument doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I understand that AOL users have no problem reaching other AOL users. But if all of the dire assessments on AOL of the past couple of weeks were true, you would think that I, as a 10-year AOL user, would have had some trouble at some point receiving email from users who are NOT AOL customers. I have never had any trouble, not as an eBay seller or in any other capacity, frankly. Another thing that is confusing is that Scott said the recent MOPO distribution problems were cleared up, except as they affected AOL users. Well, from the minute he said the general MOPO problems were cleared up, I've started receiving the MOPO messages as normal, even though I am indeed still an AOL user. I see no continuing problem with AOL users receiving MOPO messages. All of the AOL complaints of the past couple of weeks had me concerned and considering getting a Yahoo address for use on eBay, but my personal experience with AOL just does not support the idea that I need to get off of AOL. So, far, I don't get what all the fuss is about. Laura I don't know about the messages getting through issue that others have spoken of here but for those of us who sometimes need to send attachments to other people, AOL is a nightmare. From AOL user to AOL user, sending them is no problem. From a non-AOL user to one who is, files are not infrequently corrupted on their journey. And it's impossible to send more than one attachment to the same message. Unfailingly, the two (or more) attachments will be mangled and useless when they arrive. Each attachment *must* be sent with a separate message. Then, most of the time, they'll each survive. But combined, never. Re: [MOPO] continuing aol problems
Lenny, You are lucky to not have had any known problems with your aol account. I have had loads of aol users tell me they did not get an email I sent. They usually will get it the second time I send it but many of them tell me they have constant problems with what they refer to as A-O-Hell. It seems that problems rose when aol improved their spam filters. I would say 99% of the time that a buyer says they have not gotten an email it is an AOL account. I personally am not attacking AOL as a whole but it does get frustrating when I send emails to an account and do not know if the recipient got it unless they respond right back. Just knock on wood and thank your lucky stars that you seem to be working just fine. Re: [MOPO] continuing aol problems
Funny you should say that JR... after several incredibly frustrating transactions with AOL users the last few weeks, we are certainly going to put a note on all our auctions to the effect that AOL users may experience difficulties completing their transaction. Barring AOL users is drastic, but you are not wrong in what you say. I guess the thing that is irritating/frustrating is that so many AOL users think that it's everyone else's fault, not the fact that they are using an ISP that is basically censoring their mail. Like I said earlier (probably not read by most AOL users because it's hit or miss whether they see MoPo posts now) isn't this under the heading of free speech issues. Like, d'uh folks - wake up. You are paying for a service that is using a discriminatory marketing tactic that is stopping you doing business... so why on earth are you continuing to support it? Re: [MOPO] Continuing AOL problems
Yes, this is frustrating all around. Apparently, though, it is not exclusively an AOL problem, at least as far as MOPO goes. I've been contacted by several MOPOers who do not use AOL telling me they haven't received MOPO mail in several weeks -- so the problem seems larger than just AOL. And Phil, the Yank constitution provides for a check on government, and unfortunately not on public corporations. The first amendment says *Congress* shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. Since attempts to AOL customer service have been unproductive, maybe contacting customer RELATIONS at AOL corporate might be of more help. As of the moment, for me, I am getting sporadic messages from MOPO, and those I do get are 2 or 3 days late. Re: [MOPO] continuing aol problems
Dear Scott, I have mentioned this before. As an ebay seller, AOL is a nightmare. I have at least 25 auctions a week end with bidders who have AOl. About 50% know the routine and check their junk folder. The other's dont and, if all other avenues fail, I wind up having to send them a letter through the mail to get confirmation of the order. Now, theoretically, the rules of ebay are that the seller and buyer contact each other within three days. That doesn't happen a lot in my case. It is so much extra work that I include on every one of my listings a note about AOL users. I will say that in the past month I have had a lot of customers call or email to say they no longer use AOL and have switched to another service. It continues to be problematic. Here's one of mine: 554 HVU:B1 http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/554hvub1.html EXPLANATION: There is at least one URL in your email that is generating substantial complaints from AOL members. SOLUTION: If you own all the domains linked to in your e-mail, please to discuss more effective management of your complaint levels. You can start by setting up a free complaint loop through this form. This will allow you to receive AOL member complaints against your domain. If you do not own the domain, please have the owner of that domain "There is at least one URL in your email that is generating substantial complaints from AOL members." Well.. thats nice. It had a whopping TWO. Its obvious, they are using content scanning software which is set too strict. F.i. any message warning people not to go to url www . xxx . xxx . something will go in the bin if lots of people complain about being such a site warned. Now the only thing to do is try and avoid text that might trigger their filters. Absurd if you ask me. I bet they have filters set for common phrases all sellers here use. Obviously to keep their subscribers from being bombed by spam mail with offers for FREE med!c!ne .. There used to be a time when they called it America Off Line. Come back all is forgiven.
