Problem with chars case in naming under WIN98

2001-03-27 Thread algr

Description:
I started replication from UNIX_server(Distrib 3.23.33) to
windows_server(3.23.35a for win95/98). When I creating a table JJJ on a
master host, i see table jjj on slave instead of JJJ.
And more - any created locally on slave side in upper case table appearing
as lower case ...
Under UNIX there is no such problem... tables JJJ and jjj are different and
can exist at the same time. So, It's impossible to replicate such tables.
I can't test slave on other platforms...

How-To-Repeat:
build replication then do CREATE TABLE JJJ(a char(1));CREATE
TABLE jjj(b char(7)); on master side and do SHOW TABLES; on slave(windows
platform) side. U'll see an error on slave side and slave side will stop replication
process.

mysql.3.23.35 under Solaris-2.6 (Sparc)

2001-03-27 Thread Zsolt Koppany

Hi,

I have to run my application under Solaris-2.6 (we cannot upgrade our
web server) and I need some 3.23.x functionality. I tried to compile the
3.23.35 sources but "configure" complained about the compiler.

Could somebody provide me a binary version of 3.23.x (the best would be
of course 35) for Solaris-2.6 Sparc?

Complex mysql query

2001-03-27 Thread Yann Larrivée

Hi everybody. I got a complexe question well according to me. I am working with PHP
and i am making some queries to some database. here is a description of the tables.

  provider book video music
  provider_id title title title
  name provider_id provider_id provider_id

I need to select all the title from book, video, music that matches a provider name
and not a provider id.

I know i can make 2 queries to do it but i am shure i can do a complexe join somewhere
that would allow me only to connect once. I want to do it this one because to connect
twince to a db could slow down the performance.

This problem goes beyound my knowledge of MySQL a bit of help would be appreciated :-)

Thanks

Converting Decimal value to Binary

2001-03-27 Thread Filip Sergeys

Hi,

WHAT DO I WANT TO DO:

I want to have the binary value of a part of a decimal value.

1)I have a decimal value in column called intag : 262204

2)From this value I'am only interested in the last two bits of the HEX value of
   this decimal
HEX value = 4003C
My interest 3C
part of used SQL query: substring(HEX(intag), (length(HEX(intag))-1), 2)

3)For the last two bits(3C) I like to have the binary value
HEX value = 3C
Binary = 00
Final SQL query: BIN(substring(HEX(intag), (length(HEX(intag))-1), 2))

PROBLEM
When running the last query, the returned value is 11 instead of 00.
Probably it has something to do with the fact that I requested a substring of
length 2. What do I need to do to get the complete binary value?

If one you SQL geniuses knows this, please let me know.

Thanks in advance

Subject: ADO problem with MYSQL datetime column

I have a table that I'm querying that has 'datetime' columns. If these
 columns are null or 0 - "-00-00 00:00:00", I have problems reading
from
 the ADO recordset.

What kind of problems are you having specifically?

If you already have your data in an ADO recordset, then it is fairly simple
to "massage" the data in any way you want. Have you checked the field with
IsEmpty or IsNull? Using a conditional statement to check for null or empty
values should prevent these dates from passing through to your script.

I was wondering if this is an ADO issue with the MYSQL column type of
datetime, or perhaps an issue with the MyODBC driver and ADO ?

If the data is already in the recordset, and the values for the other fields
are correct, then I don't think that it would be an ODBC error. It might
just be a matter of using some further code to verify the data before you
use it in the rest of your scripts.

Good luck,

Dennis

Re: How do i put integrity constraints?

How do i put in an integrity constraint?

ie. say i have 2 tables

Person (PersonID[pk], PersonName)

School (SchoolID[pk], SchoolName, PersonID[fk])

as you can see PersonID is the foreign key in School.
So how do keep update and delete restricted constraints etc,?

could anyone tell me the SQL code for bot the tables?

duke.

Sir, look up REFERENCES in the documentation. But the documentation
points out that this is for compatibility with other DBMSs, and
doesn't actually do anything. MySQL doesn't enforce integrity
constraints on foreign keys.

2001-03-27 Thread Peter Skipworth

(I think) most people figure that the disadvantages of having images and
most other binary files stored within the DBMS far outweigh any
advantages. From the top of my head...

Advantages
--
 - tidiness
 - ease of backup - all data is in one respository.

Disadvantages
-
 - DB is bigger, therefore repairs/checks/etc take longer (?)
 - for website apps, you can have your binary files (eg
images/wavs) stored under the web heirarchy, meaning that a mysql
application is not required to retrieve the file from disk.

I'm sure there's more...I'm a bit short of time at the moment!

Subject: help on mysql tables

I have created the following table:

  create table test(name varchar(10) NOT NULL);
  query is ok

Yes, but notice that you put a constraint of NOT NULL on the field. This
means that there has to be a value in this field, in every record.

I HAVE TRIED THE FOLLOWING QUERY :

  insert into test values("");

MYSQL COMMAND IS ACCEPTING THE ABOVE QUERY WHICH VIOLATES NOT NULL
  CONSTRAINTS.

First problem is that you should specify a table field after the table name
and you should specify a corresponding piece of data in the VALUES portion
of your statement. Next, you need to make sure that the data you enter is
NOT blank since the field has a NOT NULL constraint. Finally, you should
encase your data in single quotation marks, not double quotation marks.
Therefore, change your statement to:

INSERT INTO test(name) VALUES('something');

If your table has only one field, you can also use the statement below:

INSERT INTO test VALUES('something');

Good luck,

Dennis

What you're trying to do is impossible. TINYINT takes one byte, and
has a range of -128 to 127. There's no way to get a larger value unless
you do one of the following:

- Declare your column to be UNSIGNED. That changes the range to 0-255,
but will only extend your range by 128 values.
- Declare your column using a larger integer type.

Subject: mySQL INSTR function problem

Hi there ...

I am running mySQL Ver. 9.33 Distrib. 3.22.25 and I have run into the
following problem.

When I type:

mysql select INSTR('foobarbar', 'bar');

it outputs

+---+
| INSTR('foobarbar', 'bar') |
+---+
| 7 |
+---+

Shouldn't the output be 4?

If it should be 4, does any one know why it is returning 7?

Thanks in advance

   Hi,
I wonder if anyone had a problem like this one.
I have created a table with one field autoincrement. The field is
 tinyint(4).
whenever I try to introduce more then 127 records it refuses to
 introduce them.
I tried with tinyint(5) 6.. and so on. It works only with integer.
   dacian

If you aren't putting more than 256 items into the table, then you could
define the column as tinyint unsigned. Stating tinyint(4) only indicates a
maximum display width of 4 characters. It does nothing for the stroed value
size. Tinyint will only ever be 1 byte in size, with a possible 256 values
(0-255). Use unsigned if all your values are going to be positive.

Somehow though, I think you would be better off with:
column smallint unsigned auto_increment,
for your column def. (0-65535) for a smaller database.

Re: NT installation

Doesn't MySQL on NT support networking? You should be able to install the
mysql client on the workstation and give it the IP address, port number and
database name on the server to connect. You don't have to install telnet.

I don't use NT, so if there really is some reason MySQL on NT won't work
through a TCP port, I would love to know (and add it to the list of reasons
I run my dbs on linux or BSD) ;)

 Subject: Mysql in a 4-way / 2 GByte server / raid 5

 Hello

I am thinking to install our DB server in a 4-way machine with
Intel Xeon processors/1MB cache. I can see in the mysql
 documentation that mysql
works OK in a 2-way machine but that in a 4-way system has to
 be tested.

Is this true? Or the documentation is not updated?

Anybody out there with a 4-way machine that runs mysql
 without problems?
 (kernel 2.4.x glibc 2.2.12)

Our DB has around 120.000.000 "questions" per week and our
 2-way/1Gb system works OK,
but the trafic is growing very fast and I would like to have a backup
 plan incase I need it.

 Thanks for your help.
 Rafael Martinez

I've had MySQL running on a 12 CPU 16 GB machine running Tru64. Runs OK.
I normally run it on a 4 CPU 4 GB machine and another one with 3 CPUs and
only 512 MB. Both Tru64 Alpha.
In recent (3.23) versions there are some my.cnf parameters related to SMP
machines. You might want to take a look at them :

set-variable= thread_cache=8
set-variable= thread_concurrency=8 # Try number of CPU's*2

The only problem I have is that there appears to be a problem with memory
allocation when running MySQL on Tru64. I haven't found out exactly what the
problem is, but the result is a crashed MySQL with a "Out of memory" error.
Which is rather misleading since there is plenty of free memory and no
ulimit or any other limiting kernel parameters.

[clip]
Why that, usertime systemtime are data values, they are
 never used in any
where clause. As far as I can see it's complete waste to
 put index on those.

If all columns of the SELECT clause are part of the index, MySQL will
solve the query only with reading from the index file and never touch
 the data file itself.

Since the index is quite big already and usertime+systemtime only add
8 bytes per row, this may pay off regarding the speed win / size
 increase.

Aha. I'll think about that, but I'll have to look in the logfiles to see if
there's a pattern regarding what the users select. I don't think it's just
usertime systemtime every time.

[clip]
Depending on the Cardinality of the different columns you
 may want to
   change the order to (username,processname,system_id,timecode)
   or alike.

Aha, I'll have to test more with the individual order of
 combined indexes to
see what I can get from it.

Well, normally that is not really important, but in your case,
processname has a low cardinality and therefore one value has a lot of
matches in the index and it is worth a try to put it to the right.

So the lower the cardinality the more to the right in a combined index ?

[clip]
May I bother you to add the following indexes and post the EXPLAIN
 after adding them:.

 (system_id, processname, timecode)
 (system_id, processname, timecode, username)
(system_id, processname, timecode, username, usertime, systemtime)

I'll try. Tonight I'm going for system_id, processname, timecode

I will probably make the next tests on the disk table, since recreating
indexes and analyzing/optimizing on the process table takes too many hours.
The disk table only takes 20 minutes.

Every explain ends up saying "where used" and the showing
 the full number of
rows. This is in 3.22.32. My test setup is the latest, it
 might be different
  there.

Well, using two different systems isn't a good idea, except if you
plan to upgrade your 3.22.32 system, because if we find a solution on
your test setup (3.23.?), it won't behave the same on the older
MySQL. In most cases, 3.23 is faster than 3.22 (which is to be
 expected).

I plan to upgrade asap, but had a few problems building the latest stable
under 4.0f ev56.

On a side note, with 3.22.32 I have some weird memory allocation problems.

The database runs on a 4 CPU machine with 4 GB memory, and most of these 4
GB are free (or rather used for filesystem cache by the OS). The memory is
free if any process want it.
With the default settings (ie. no custom my.cnf) everything runs fine, but
MySQL use allmost no memory which is not optimal given the size of the
database indexes.

If I instead use the my-huge.cnf that comes with MySQL which makes a key
buffer of 384 MB, a big select makes MySQL crash with a "Out of memory"
error.
I have ulimit set to unlimited, and no memory allocation errors are logged
to /var/adm/messages (Tru64 allways logs to that file if some user hit the
limit of some sysconfigtab/kernel parameter). This means that the "Out of
memory" error from MySQL was not caused but the OS disallowing mysqld to
allocate more memory.
I have tried this several times to be sure it's reproduceable. I get a crash
every time.

Is there a memory allocation bug in MySQL on Tru64 ?

Anothing thing: If you cannot get it work with combined indexes, can
you post some testcase (i.e. the SQL commands to build a sample
database), so that we can play around and see if we have more luck?

Sure.
Everything will in fact be put on a web page soon, since it's a OpenSource
solution.
The database is used to store performance info for Tru64, Solaris Linux
(and others soon).
A bit like MRTG/RDDTool/Cricket but much more dynamic detailed.

To make 2 queries seems more simple i would record the result from the first

Wouldn't using LEFT OUTER JOINs in your query work instead of just a where
clause? It still wouldn't give the optimum response but it would probably
give a usable one. Unfortunately, I don't see a way to do what the user
really wants to do in MySQL. In MySQL, the UNION clause does not mean
what
it means in other implementations of SQL.

In M$ SQL you could use the UNION to aggregate 3 different select's into a
single result set, thus giving him 1 result set with all books, movies and
music from a single provider. I usually add a field at the end of each
SELECT that contains a constant representing the source for that record.

excuse me, this just wouldn't work. and excuse last unfinished message.

if one on of the tables matches none, the query will return no match,
which
is maybe not what you want.
else it'll return all data matched against each other, which is again not
likely what you want (since you get multiple results for each table).

guess you'll have to query each of the music, video and book tables
seperate
to return sensefull results (read: presentable results).

only circumstance when this give nice results is when each
book/video/music
 table contains exactly one match.

 sorry for too rapid answering...

Hi Chad

You do not need a Telnet client. Just install Myodbc and the mysql client.

To connect to your server, type "mysql -h yourhostname -u userID"

If you defined a password for the userID, add -p at the end of the line. The
system will prompt you for the password. See manual for more options.

You can also install a web server (PWS or Infradig) and the PHP scripting
langage on your local machine, and run PHPmyAdmin. Take care to protect your
local machine for intrusions.

Hope this helps you,

RE: help on MySQL tables

Hi Rick,

You absolutely right, you are not required to specify field names in an
Insert. But it's a good idea to do so. 1) It makes you code more readable
for those following you. 2) If your table ever changes structure, your
Insert will still work. (Assuming you didn't remove one or more of the
fields you are inserting into.)

You DO NOT need to specify table field names when INSERTing records. For
instance, if the table were defined thus:

CREATE TABLE mytable (
  valueA varchar(10) NOT NULL,
  valueB varchar(25),
  valueC varchar(30) );

This statement will insert one record:
  INSERT INTO mytable VALUES("some text", "more text", "last text");

To insert multiple records, go with:
INSERT INTO mytable VALUES("some text", "more text", "last text"),("record
2","text for 2","last text in 2");

I have created the following table:

 create table test(name varchar(10) NOT NULL);
 query is ok

Yes, but notice that you put a constraint of NOT NULL on the field. This
means that there has to be a value in this field, in every record.

I HAVE TRIED THE FOLLOWING QUERY :

 insert into test values("");

INSERT INTO test(name) VALUES('something');

If your table has only one field, you can also use the statement below:

INSERT INTO test VALUES('something');

Good luck,

RE: NT installation

2001-03-27 Thread Chad Nielsen

Thanks Jean - Claude,

NT Workstation comes with a built-in client. but from what I can tell, NT
Server does not come with a built-in Telnet Server. The NT book I have says
:

"The Telnet program requires TCP/IP on both the client and server, and
requires an account set up on the server being contacted. Microsoft NT
doesn't provide the server process, but it does provide the client
interface. "

Am i interpreting this correctly?

If so, does mySQL provide the Telnet Server process?

Thanks again,

 Hi Chad

You do not need a Telnet client. Just install Myodbc and the mysql client.

To connect to your server, type "mysql -h yourhostname -u userID"

If you defined a password for the userID, add -p at the end of
 the line. The
system will prompt you for the password. See manual for more options.

You can also install a web server (PWS or Infradig) and the PHP scripting
langage on your local machine, and run PHPmyAdmin. Take care to
 protect your
 local machine for intrusions.

 Hope this helps you,

MySQL vs MS-SQL performance

2001-03-27 Thread Steve Quezadas

Hey guys,

Most of the accounts I have read about MySQL was that it was one of the fastest
databases around. Now, for development purposes I created a FreeBSD system with JUST
MySQL (no other major processes). Then I created a separate Windows 2000 ASP server to
server as our development server for our new site. The two servers communicated via
ODBC.

Anyways, a period of time elapsed and we decided to move to MS-SQL server for feature
reasons, and when we had the MS-SQL ODBC driver point to the newly created MS-SQL
server (roughly same specs), it was like 50% faster! What gives? Is MySQL *really*
that slow, MS-SQL *really* that fast, or maybe there was some weird setting in the
ODBC driver or the MySQL server that I didn't switch right which made it go slow. I am
not sure.

Or maybe Microsoft, in their monopolistic ways, created special hooks between ASP and
MS-SQL server to make the communication go somehow faster. Anyone had similar
experiences to mine?

mysql setup questions

2001-03-27 Thread Tariq . Hasnain

I have a problem getting the mysql started. I am running
slackware linux version 7.xx. Apparently mysql is installed.
I downloaded the linux binary package of mysql and installed it.
the mysql is installed in /usr/local/mysql. The problem is that
mysql ** immediately ends **. Here is one of the ways I try to start MSQL.

**
export MYSQL_UNIX_PORT=/tmp/mysql.sock
export MYSQL_TCP_PORT=3307
export MYSQL_UNIX_PORT MYSQL_TCP_PORT
/usr/local/mysql/scripts/mysql_install_db
**
I get the following response:

To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy support-files/mysql.server
to the right place for your system

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
This is done with:
./bin/mysqladmin -u root -p password 'new-password'
./bin/mysqladmin -u root -h netwall -p password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.

NOTE: If you are upgrading from a MySQL = 3.22.10 you should run
the ./bin/mysql_fix_privilege_tables. Otherwise you will not be
able to use the new GRANT command!

You can start the MySQL daemon with:
cd . ; ./bin/safe_mysqld

You can test the MySQL daemon with the benchmarks in the 'sql-bench'
directory:
cd sql-bench ; run-all-tests

Please report any problems with the ./bin/mysqlbug script!

Odds are that you didn't tune MySQL at all. Unlike most commercial
database servers, MySQL "out of the box" isn't tuned for heavy usage.

Well, normally that is not really important, but in your case,
processname has a low cardinality and therefore one value has a lot of

I think I mixed it up and actually you said that username has only few
different values.

matches in the index and it is worth a try to put it to the right.

So the lower the cardinality the more to the right in a combined index ?

Yes, I think so.

But let me emphasize it again: Usually you need not to care about
this, but only if the ratio of Cardinality / amount of rows is
magnitudes lower than for other columns (and it sounded as this is the
case for username).

On the other hand, I only happened to come across this twice (I mean,
that changing the order of combined index resulted in an speed
increase), and I don't know too much about the internals of the trees
used in the MySQL indexes, so take this with a grain of salt.

I think, it is of interest, what the Cardinality of the sub key is,
i.e. if you only have 20 different usernames, but system_id splits
them up (i.e. only 20 entries for each system_id), of course, you
don't need to think about.

But you it probably works with 20 different usernames, which each
'contain' 1 system_id's. Then it's better to start with the
system_id, I think. Someone may want to correct me, if I am mistaken.

Just try if it helps, and if not, ignore my suggestion.

[...]
I'll try. Tonight I'm going for system_id, processname, timecode

I will probably make the next tests on the disk table, since recreating
indexes and analyzing/optimizing on the process table takes too many hours.
The disk table only takes 20 minutes.

Good idea.

[...]
On a side note, with 3.22.32 I have some weird memory allocation problems.
[some Tru64 stuff deleted]

Sorry, but I cannot help with that, someone else hopefully can answer this.

Bye,

Benjamin.

Steve,

I also experienced the same results you did until I realized that
the MS-SQL connection was using pooled connections and my
use of MySQL wasn't. After I started using persistent connections
to MySQL, it was much faster than MS-SQL on identical hardware
and no tuning on either system.

Also if you are looking for a performance improvement, drop ODBC
and try the native API; it's much faster.

Re: advice sought on using a select to extract binary data

 Hi!

I enter some .wav encoded (windows) data into a MySql table as follows:

 $data = addslashes(fread(fopen($form_data, "r"),

 b(audio,filename,filesize,filetype,audio_description) ".
   "VALUES
 ('$data','$form_data_name','$form_data_size','$form_data_type',
 '$audio_description')");
  $uid= mysql_insert_id();

Later, I try to reconstruct the original audio file as follows:

   $query = mysql_query("select audio from dupe_b where uid='87' into
 outfile 'c:/windows/desktop/data.wav' ");

This does not yield the correct format. I take it that I require "fields
terminated by" or something like that to make this work. However, I
cannot get any further with this.

 Any suggestions?

 Thanks for the time!

Have you tried putting the returned value into a variable, opening up a file
for writing(as binary)
In php (which it looks like you are using)

$fh=fopen('newfile.wav','wb');
fputs($fh,$fielddata);
fclose($fh);

I think that selecting into an outfile does some textencoding and newline
conversion type stuff (just guessing).

The above is the way I would do it, if I had to put my files into a db.

I would rather store my files, as files, in a directory, and store the meta
information (file location, name, size, description, copyright whatever) in the
database.
It is so much easier to have the file path/name inserted into the html, than
to pull all the data out, create the file, insert the filename, server up
the html.

Re: New ODBC

2001-03-27 Thread Lindsay Adams

Yes, your grant tables are not set up correctly.
For full information, see the manual.

For now try this:

Choose a userid and password just for your db connection. It can be
different from every other userid password you have.

With the mysql client issue the following to SQL statements

GRANT ALL ON *.* TO userid@%.uni-karlsruhe.de IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Then try to connect with ODBC using the above userid and password.
The effect of the GRANT statement allows userid to connect from any machine
in the un-karlsruhe.de domain.
The *.* means all databases and all their tables.
The % is the wildcard that MySQL needs to allow the domain match.
If your connection is always going to come from the same host, you can put
that exact hostname or ip address after the @ in that section.

MySQL maintains a totally separate user list from the system it is on, which
is why you are getting the error.

RE: Progress DB to MySQL DB

2001-03-27 Thread Grant Walters

Has anyone seen any tool that would connect to
a Progress DB and dump out a .sql (DB structure data)
so I can then load it into MySQL.

I know very little about Progress, but...
I have managed to get PHP http://www.php.net talking to both MySQL and Progress 8.3
using the openlink drivers
http://www.openlinksw.com
Using the functions from within php you can extract information about tables and then
build create statements and then transfer the
data.
It works very well.

You could also write some kind of script that would convert a progress .df file into
true SQL TABLE statements.

Also, another thing I want to achive is to be able to run
Progress 4GL code against MySQL DB.
Has anyone heard anything about this before?

Pass. Although Progress do have a product that talks to ODBC data source (which would
include MySQL).

Hope this helps.

upgrading mysql

2001-03-27 Thread Ryan Worley

What process do you guys usually follow when upgrading your version of
MySQL? I have yet to perform an upgrade, but my first thought would be to
dump the databases, uninstall the old version (remove all the files),
install the new version, and import the dump file. Is this a good plan, or
is there a better method?
