  Hello Kira,

There are hundreds different languages, tools and abstraction toolkits
that use MySQL. In the manual, we start with the simplest possible choice -
using MySQL from the command line.

I will suggest to the documentation team that we provide suggestions at the
start of the article on how to get started with other combinations of
  technologies.

For learning how to use MySQL with a given language (such as PHP) it is
often best to look at the documentation for the language.

With PHP, if you visit http://php.net/mysql, you will find a simple example
of how to connect to using PHP, along with many additional details for each
  function.

Additionally, many common topics, such as using Dreamweaver, MySQL and PHP
have be covered in web-based articles.

A search on Google.com for 'dreamweaver mysql php' returns results like:
  http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/dreamweaver/php.html

Cheers and happy coding!

actually her problem has nothing to do with me. i wasn't vague. i said right out
what i need to do. a list is a bunch of threads, you're supposed to follow them, not
take things out of context.

and as far as putting time into this, what you think i didn't run any searches or
anything? thanks.

actually i've put a lot of time into this and found nothing that helps. the mysql
site is a huge pile of code, and i can't find anything that has to do with setup on
one's own computer using win2k, or anything about winmysqladmin. i tried the
macromedia forums as well. saying i don't want to spend 90 hours on something hardly
means that i didn't put an ounce of effort into it.

i think the flaming can stop now, i've got people to help me and i can work with that.

also, you'd think someone who can build mysql could build a decent mailing list, one
that doesn't require 2 separate replies. yes i've actually been on other lists!
amazing huh?

This is more of a DreamWeaver question than a MySQL and you will
probably have better luck getting an answer from a DreamWeaver list
or forum.

Have you tried searching the DreamWeaver Help or manuals?

A quick search for "MySQL" provided me with the following topics:

Creating the MySQL database
Setting the MySQL Connection dialog box options
Creating a database connection
Connecting to a database
Database Connections for PHP Developers

plus 25 other topics.

This search took me less than 30 secs. to find the solutions to your
"question".

I do not understand why people have to get hard on other people just
because they ask a question. If you do not a helpful thing to say
well do not reply. The reason why people ask is because there are
looking for shortcuts that are known by those who have been around

Re: Re: [MySQL] RE: Question: Connecting MySQL with DreamWeaver MX on Windows 2000

2003-04-04 Thread kira
ok i'll try it. it didn't work before i installed myodbc but in the help screen
(winmysqladmin.exe) it shows the database panel with right click "create database" -
that isn't working but maybe it doesn't matter.

thx!

I am running win2000 with the ODBC installed and I always get the "NOT
FOUND" under ODBC, however it know its working, im connecting to the
database and the tables within it.

I have had no problem creating a database at the prompt like so:

(assuming mySQL is installed in c:\mysql\bin (if its not you have to change
the mysql.ini))

cd mysql\bin\mysql
mysql
create database "database name"
connect "database name"
create table tablename(
stuff.

);

Thanks for the info, i've searched and searched the mysql site for info but
not found a lot, except people who got the error 1067 code helping each
other. i noticed a NOT FOUND under ODBC so i installed myodbc, but now i
get the NOT FOUND along with the driver info underneath it, so i'm not
exactly sure what's up. i still can't create a database using
winmysqladmin.exe or thru the prompt so i'll have to keep messin with it.

as i said previously, i'm sure everything will seem totally logical once i
get used to it, but for right now it's a little difficult. if i could just
create a database and connect with dwMX i'd be set.

How...what? How to setup MySQL? How to setup PHP? How to read the
manual? How to work your own computer? You ask vague questions, and
can only expect vague answers back.

> and the manual have you seen how long that is?

Yes, which is what makes it a good manual. There is a reason why
they give you a Table of Contents right at the very beginning. It's
less than 2 pages long and all you have to read is the Installation
section. After that, you can read how to create your own databases.
You're making this way harder than it really is. You think you have to
read the whole manual, instead of reading the sections you need help with.

No, instead you're asking someone else to chew your food for you,
and have you swallow it. Like I said, if you took the time to even read
the table of contents, you would've quickly found out which sections
specifically you needed to read - it's very short and can be done within
10 minutes.

RE: Re: [MySQL] RE: Question: Connecting MySQL with DreamWeaver MX on Windows 2000

2003-04-04 Thread Michael Shulman
Kira,

Let's take it a step at a time.

First, make sure that your MySQL is running. Have you started the server
with \mysql\bin\winmysqldmin.exe? Look for a traffic light in your system
tray, and the green light showing.

Now, try to connect using the \mysql\bin\mysql.exe command line tool. By
default, mysql is wide open, so you should be able to connect like this. Try
these commands and let us know if any of them give you trouble. If these
commands all work, we've verified that your MySQL is installed correctly and
that you can log in without a username or password, and that you can create
tables, insert, select, and drop.

not sure what the hell your problem is, but if you don't want to help then don't.
complaining that i need help when 99% of the manual refers to remost server usage
isn't really necessary.

all i need to do is make a connection between dwmx and mysql. that's it.

please don't respond to anything else i write.
it's a waste of time.

btw: there's no need to send two messages. one is enough.

Re: [MySQL] RE: Question: Connecting MySQL with DreamWeaver MX on Windows 2000

2003-04-04 Thread kira

yes i know that.  How? was my question.

I searched the directories for some sort of actual windows
program but didn't see one, and didn't feel like going into EVERY
directory.  See I have no idea where the executables should be because i'm
new to the program.  Hiding it in a subdir doesn't help!

the Readme.__ files dont' say anything useful, and the
manual have you seen how long that is?  The manual
refers to shell access, do i have shell access to my own computer?
probably possible but not seeing exactly how, which is why i wondered if this
was even possible (putting on my own computer etc).

when i looked under What is MySql?  it says " MySql is a
powerful database tool blah blah.  MySql can do this and this and
this"    In other words, it basically says, "Here are 90,000
commands and detailed queries you won't need unless you actually figure out how
to use the program on your own."

I decided not to frustrate myself for 8 hours on this, but
instead just to ask the knowledgeable and go from there!

Anyway, someone else has kindly answered my question.  I
think this is just another program that once you get used to it you're fine and
everything seems logical, but the first few steps are critical!

Thanks.

How to setup what? There's is no setup that you have to do for DW.
Just define your site as local and start coding. As for connecting,
that's specific to what you're using. If you're using PHP, read its manual.

MySQL is already installed but there is no database, no tables.

So? Create them. Again, read the manual. MySQL has a very
extensive manual available.

Why not? If you do it right, it works just fine. I develop mainly on my
laptop before uploading to the main server. I have MySQL installed on the main
server, and on my laptop. When I'm working in DW, using PHP, all I have to do
is connect to localhost to get to MySQL. When I upload the page, it works fine
because it's now querying the local MySQL server.

You can go further, I also have a dedicated MySQL server that's different
from the main webserver. On both the webserver as well as my laptop, the $host
point to that address. Either way, you CAN develop MySQL specific scripts
using PHP, in Dreamweaver.
