actually her problem has nothing to do with me.  i wasn't vague.  i said right out 
what i need to do.  a list is a bunch of threads, you're supposed to follow them, not 
take things out of context.

and as far as putting time into this, what you think i didn't run any searches or 
anything?  thanks.

actually i've put a lot of time into this and found nothing that helps.  the mysql 
site is a huge pile of code, and i can't find anything that has to do with setup on 
one's own computer using win2k, or anything about winmysqladmin.  i tried the 
macromedia forums as well.  saying i don't want to spend 90 hours on something hardly 
means that i didn't put an ounce of effort into it.

i think the flaming can stop now, i've got people to help me and i can work with that.

also, you'd think someone who can build mysql could build a decent mailing list, one 
that doesn't require 2 separate replies.  yes i've actually been on other lists!  
amazing huh?

They are only sending one.  It is proper form when replying to reply to both

I think their problem was the fact that you admitted you were just asking

ok i'll try it.  it didn't work before i installed myodbc but in the help screen 
(winmysqladmin.exe) it shows the database panel with right click "create database"  - 
that isn't working but maybe it doesn't matter.

Let's take it a step at a time.

First, make sure that your MySQL is running. Have you started the server
with \mysql\bin\winmysqldmin.exe? Look for a traffic light in your system
tray, and the green light showing.

Now, try to connect using the \mysql\bin\mysql.exe command line tool. By
default, mysql is wide open, so you should be able to connect like this. Try
these commands and let us know if any of them give you trouble. If these
commands all work, we've verified that your MySQL is installed correctly and
that you can log in without a username or password, and that you can create

I searched the directories for some sort of actual windows 
program but didn't see one, and didn't feel like going into EVERY 
directory.  See I have no idea where the executables should be because i'm 
new to the program.  Hiding it in a subdir doesn't help!  
 
the Readme.__ files dont' say anything useful, and the 
manual have you seen how long that is?  The manual 
refers to shell access, do i have shell access to my own computer?  
probably possible but not seeing exactly how, which is why i wondered if this 
was even possible (putting on my own computer etc).

this"    In other words, it basically says, "Here are 90,000 
commands and detailed queries you won't need unless you actually figure out how 
to use the program on your own."

Anyway, someone else has kindly answered my question.  I 
think this is just another program that once you get used to it you're fine and 
everything seems logical, but the first few steps are critical!

   How to setup what?  There's is no setup that you have to do for DW. 
Just define your site as local and start coding.  As for connecting, 
that's specific to what you're using.  If you're using PHP, read its manual.

   Why not?  If you do it right, it works just fine.  I develop mainly on my 
laptop before uploading to the main server.  I have MySQL installed on the main 
server, and on my laptop.  When I'm working in DW, using PHP, all I have to do 
is connect to localhost to get to MySQL.  When I upload the page, it works fine 
because it's now querying the local MySQL server.

   You can go further, I also have a dedicated MySQL server that's different 
from the main webserver.  On both the webserver as well as my laptop, the $host 
point to that address.  Either way, you CAN develop MySQL specific scripts 
using PHP, in Dreamweaver.
