I suspect your backend is already running as a service. This would make
port 6543 inaccessible, since it is in use already.
Try
#/sbin/service mythbackend stop

Bad form, reply to self Bla Bla Bla.
Fixed it, because all of my listings are locale I didn't have a
universal time zone set in the .ini file for TVxb. I was telling TVxb to
add 6 hours to the start time of all the shows but some how it knew I'm
in +8 land and hence the problem, now I've got all my local channels at
+8 and Mnet at +2 it works.

[mythtv-users] Non-recording master backend

2005-09-07 Thread Robin Gilks
Greetings all

I'd like to shift the capture card from my heavy/noisy server backend to
the frontend which is an EPIA running diskless with nfs mounts back to the
server (this avoids long cable runs).

This means I'll have to run the backend code on the EPIA for the capture
but I want to keep the mysql, commercial cutting and transcoding on the
server (its got 5 times the grunt after all!!).

Is this possible and if so, how do I set up please?

Thanks

Try restricting the time and days you allow the recordings to take

use mythconverg

UPDATE record set description="program.title = \"West Wing\" AND

I have my directories set up as /music/genre/artist/album. My problem
is that a couple of the genres have many artists. I'd like to keep

containing more than, say, 20 artists.

Is that even possible w/o compiling my own?

[Mythtv-users] Playing recording kills frontend

2005-09-07 Thread Chris Henderson
Hi all,

I have been fully enjoying the mythtv experience after 2 years for
trying to get it working (part time with VERY wrong hardware). the Wife
forked over some money for a new computer for me and mine (P3 1gig)
became the BE along with a dvico  fusion dvbt card.

Once it was all going with a lot of help from people Off list (thanks
again guys) the WAF is very high. high enough to get a second dvbt card
so she doesnt miss any shows due to confection.

I have installed the machine to Jarrod Wilsons FC3 guide (thanks Jarrod
for the guide) and i am now using a HP e-vectra as a front end, again
using JW FC3 guide.

Now come the problem, which is more annoying than anything.
Occasionally when watching a program on the frontend that had been
recorded previously, it seems to fault somehow.

I have searched the list and it was said that the commercial marking
jobs can do this. So i turned off the jobs for all recordings. (we
don't keep the recordings anyway). this didn't seem to fix it.

Again i went back to the forum and another suggestion was when the free
space in recording drive was low this would happen. But it has happened
again the other night while recording Startgate Atlantis (of all
things). the recording wok great up till a point then it ands and sits
there for ages and then myth craps its self and goes back to the FC
desktop.

SO i didn't get shitty with it and delete it i ave keep the recording
and now on a day off i have killed the automatic start of the backend
and frontend and started them up in  terminal sessions. (again a
suggestion off the list)

here is what i got:

RE: [mythtv-users] Automatic transcoding

[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alex Brekken
Sent: Wednesday, September 07, 2005 11:42 AM

Subject: Re: [mythtv-users] Automatic transcoding

Any chance a recording made on the master is trying to be transcoded
by the slave? (or vice-versa) I've got a master/slave backend setup, and
I've noticed that often my transcoding jobs fail because the slave tries to
process a recording that was made on the master. Looking at the backend
logs on the slave, there's a mesage that states something to the effect that
"remote" transcoding is not allowed. (unlike commercial flagging, which can
be done on any backend regardless of where the recording was made) Not sure
if this is what's happening in your case, but I've seen this bug quite
often.

I think that might actually be the problem. Before, I had both backends
using the same location (slave via NFS). Now that they are currently
separate, it looks like anything recorded on the slave is failing. I've
changed the setting and will see how it goes.

Thanks,

Mo

I'm not 100% sure, but maybe using extra verbose logging might shed
some more info. Also, check the backend logfile (where the tuning
occurs) which might include this info too.

Most new Linux users would be very uncomfortable without KDE or GNOME

The lightest weight window manager possible for MythTV would be to
actually run mythfrontend as your windowmanager. Few people are that
hardcore. (and mythfrontend coredumps too often for me to want to
consider that)

Skilled linux users or people with mythtv hardware that doesn't have
gigahertz and gigabytes of RAM to spare probably want to run a lighter
weight window manager on dedicated mythtv hardware.

Aside from resource hogging, and whether or not a given WM is actively
being developed or maintained, there are no bad choices -
Windowmanagers are completely about personal preference.

Go here: http://xwinman.org/

I've tried them all and then some over the years.

The digital audio decoding amplifier will be responsible for the
volume levels when using an SPDIF as I understand it with my system
(the SPDIF just outputs a digital stream of the audio data, the
decoder then decodes and amplifies individual channels). Analogue
audio can obviously be controlled using either MythTVs internal
controls or an external mixer like alsamixer.

Re: [mythtv-users] Compiling Mythtv with DVB

2005-09-07 Thread Kevin Saenz
Which kernel version are you using? The kernel's DVB code is reasonably
up-to-date, so if you're using a fairly recent 2.6 kernel, you probablydon't need to compile in linux-dvb separately.
I was using 2.6.12-r9 I think, and linuxtv and dvico would not patch the kernel
I would experience errors. So I ended up using the vanilla kernel. The problem
I found was that when I loaded mythtvsetup and selected dvb, I got a message
saying it could not locate the directory or file. I ran ls in /dev and foud the
following structure

/dev/dvb.adapter0.frontend0
/dev/dvb.adapter0.audio0
etc

There was no /dev/dvb directory.

> I have had success with Mandrake 10.0 community and linuxtv-dvb-1.1.1.> So I reinstalled
Mandrake10.0 and recompiled linuxtv-dvb against the> kernel. I downloaded, and extracted mythtv-0.18, ran ./configure> --enable-dvb --dvb-path=/usr/src/linuxtv-1.1.1/ then ran qmake>
mythtv.pro then make and make install. The DVB path should be the path to the linux include files. I don'tthink that's the same as the linux-dvb source files. If your kernel is
2.6.12 or later, you can (and ./configure will) point to the kernelsource tree: /usr/src/linux/include. If your kernel is earlier, youmustn't include the kernel source directly - copy just the dvb stuffsomewhere else, and include that.

I found out that ./configure --enable-dvb --dvb-path=/usr/src/linuxtv-1.1.1
would not add the dvb instruction set. I modified settings.pro

# DVB supportCONFIG += using_dvbDEFINES += USING_DVBINCLUDEPATH +=/usr/src/linuxtv-1.1.1
and now I can watch HDTV :)

Re: [mythtv-users] setup for channels that are not 24/7

2005-09-07 Thread Mike Angstadt
I believe he's saying that Hallmark is channel 61 until 5:30.
After 5:30 Bravo is on channel 61.  I had a similar situation
until recently with my Comcast having Comedy Central only after 6pm
(and before that it was CourtTV! gah)

So he's saying he doesn't want to waste recording time with MythTV
trying to record The West Wing from Bravo when the channel is actually
Hallmark.  My Comcast program guide showed the Comedy Central
programs for all day, even though we only had it after 6, and I'm
assuming he has a similar problem.  So Myth would think The West
Wing was playing on 61, but really it would be Little House on the
Praire or some other equally boring Hallmark channel show :)

That being said, I'm a lurker who hasn't yet put together my HTPC and
thus don't have any experience in Myth, so I'm just clarifying (I
believe) what he meant to ask.  He only wants to record from Bravo
after 5:30 basically.

[mythtv-users] Real-time commflag with dual tuners; pause transcoding?

2005-09-07 Thread Mike Benoit
I have a PVR-500 in my MythTV box and I would like to have real time
commercial flagging of both tuners at the same time, but not
transcoding.

I have set the job queue to run two jobs simultaneously, however if a
transcode job is running when a recording starts, it won't flag
commercials in real time. I thought of setting it so jobs only run
between certain hours, but then I assume it disables the commercial
flagging altogether until those hours?

Is there anyway to do this?

Ideally transcoding would be paused while any commercial flagging jobs
were in the queue. But alternatively just have transcoding only happen
between certain hours and commercial flagging happen in real time.

Thanks.

You would need to have a dedicated input for the camera if you were
using a PVR card. It would be better to use a web camera so your
encoders are not competing with shows you are trying to record. The
trick is to bring this up in pip mode on the display which I think would
require the use of an encoder with the way it works now.

Probably would need some kind of transcoding to get it to display with
the current setup. Not sure about that.

Re: [mythtv-users] WAF Emergency - FFwd not working smoothly, Commercial skip being a LITTLE flakey.

2005-09-07 Thread David
Odd.

On my system a copy and a symlink have the same behaviour.
I obviously saw the same archive entry and I didn't believe it (!) so I
tried both a symlink and copy and made sure to restart Myth etc etc.

Maybe permissions?
What distro? I'm on Debian testing.

David
PS, by fwd/rew, do you mean the 5/30 second skip? or do you mean double
speed/reverse speed playback?
I mean the 5/30 skipping.

David,

Actually - if I just copy the file there, I get the weird ffwd/rew problem that was mentioned at the start of this thread.  If I convert it to a symbolic link, it fixes the issue (at least for me).  It doesn't even matter that the checksums of the files were exactly the same...

[mythtv-users] setup for channels that are not 24/7

2005-09-07 Thread Garry Cook
I've got an odd issue here. I record the West Wing on Bravo, channel 61 in my market. However, it's the Hallmark channel from some early morning hour until 5:30PM. Usually TWW is shown at 5 & 6PM, but sometimes it is shown for hours at a time (marathon). So, I want to be able to record at any time on any channel, but have this channel only record from 6PM to Midnight. How can I do this?

The localtime file is indeed essential to the correct functioning of Myth.

However I'm pretty sure it doesn't need to be a link/symlink - this is a
myth (with a small m) :)

I do Crestron programming and use serial ports everyday. I found that

Thanks for that.

But of course I left out what kernel I was running, sorry! It is SUSE
9.3 latest 2.6.11.4-20a kernel, which I guess already has the above
fixes in. I'll try with the very latest kernel anyway, just in case
something has been fixed...

This evening I tried to rmmod the pl2303 and the usbserial kernel
modules and re-add them, but it didn't make any difference.

So, anyone know what's going on?

Failing that, does anyone know how I can simulate a physical removal of
the USB device and a re-insert programmatically? That will at least mean
I can record some TV! ;) I searched around the Internet, couldn't find
any commands that could do it...

Thanks for any help!

2005-09-07 Thread matt lutz
Michael,

I experienced the exact same ffwd/rwd problem for a while... I came upon a fix in the archives that was pretty peculiar, but it does work.  Check to see if your /etc/localtime file is a link or an actual file.  If it's a file, then delete it, link it with the proper file in /usr/share/zoneinfo directory.  Use the following commands:

rm /etc/localtime
ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/EST5EDT /etc/localtime

obviously substitute the "EST5EDT" with whatever timezone you are actually in.  I haven't been able to find why this works, but it definately does for me.

As for the commercial skip... I have also noticed some incosistencies in what is a commercial and what is actual programming as well, and do not enable skipping anymore.

cutlist so I can transcode out an avi of JUST commercials?  I have

Sort-of. (You prob know this bit) You will have a use a simple script
(a channel-change script you can specify when setting up the card, or
later on) to get LIRC to control the IR blaster. You'll also need to
ensure you have the correct remote definitions file for your receiver,
and the correct numbers for each channel you want to record off of the
satellite box (not sure if US users are automatically setup for this).

Therefore, assuming the backend can change channels normally once this
is setup, and the frontend box is connected to the backend, the
channel changing happens completely transparently, both for recordings
and for LiveTV.

I think that is a great idea, I would rather see integration with
ip-based cameras (panasonic makes a bunch) or the ability to throw in

ability to cycle backups on your harddrive for x days.  maybe have
options to only record during motion or things like that.  Could
be a great piece of software on its own but inside myth would be the

phone! how about a security plug-in? MythSurveillance?
i know there are a couple ppl on the list that already have cameras
hooked to their MythBoxen and can view them on dedicated channels.
but what about a plug-in that allowed you to watch multiple feeds at
once on a split screen? or that cycled through your camera views when
directed or if motion was picked up?

this is more of a discussion than an 'itch'. :) although, if i were
to scratch this 'itch', it would most likely be done in Java because i
can't remember a lick of C (and don't really care to).

if something like this were to be built what kind of hardware would you use?
what would you like to be able to do with it?
could Myth be used with USB Web-Cams? this would most likely be like
watching videos as opposed to watching recordings.
can CCTV Cams be hooked up to capture cards that Myth uses?
any other camera suggestions that are small, have a range of 0' - 20'
minimum and may work at night?

if this is too OT feel free to smack me and kill this thread. ;)

On a similar note, NTL are also likely to be changing their channel

they may adopt TWs number scheme, which means we *may* end up with
similar channels (and their +1) at least somewhere near to each other.

[mythtv-users] A Noob Question about Remote Control

2005-09-07 Thread Jarod Watkins
I am thinking of building a myth system with a backend machine and a
separate frontend machine. The backend machine will have either a
Hauppauge 150 or 250 model connected to a satellite receiver. Now if
I have an ir blaster connecting the backend machine to the satellite
receiver, and then another ir remote for the frontend machine, will
MythTV know out of the box to controll the backend machine with the
frontend machine remote or would I have to make some modifications?
Also, anyone with a dish network satellite receiver hooked to a
mythtv system, and has some advice/tips or websites that helped them,
especially with remote controlling the receiver, please pass them along!

2005-09-07 Thread A JM
Just a quick note I was able to add the new device to the VG "vgdisplay" helped by allowing me to see the layout of the VG and get the size information.

This was the order when adding a new device for me:

pvcreate /dev/hdd1 < new device is prepped? for VG

vgextend VolGroup01 /dev/hdd1 <== extend the VG to include the new device
lvextend -L12G /dev/VolGroup01 /VGforMyth < extend the volume, I used the information received from "vgdisplay" to get the entire size of the VG. (this would extend to 12GB)

mount -o remount, resize /video <=== in my case for JFS this was the resize command.

Thanks for all the help.

Ah so it appeared that one of my lineups got deleted at zap2it. Not sure how
that happened,  but this weird behavior kind of makes sense now. :)

I re-added the line up to zap2it. (The channel page on mythweb under
settings was most hopeful in figuring the original line up and
channels.)

I deleted all entries in the program table.

I reran mythfilldatabase.

I restarted mythbackend

and presto good as new.

I've looked in the 'program' table in mysql and the data really isn't there. (I presume that this is where it would be.)
I've deleted the data in the table for the day in question and tried rerunning mythfilldatabase without any luck.

How do I get the raw XML files from zap2it to see what mythfilldatabase is processing?
Any other thoughts on what/how to troubleshoot?

Re: [mythtv-users] Automatic transcoding

2005-09-07 Thread Alex Brekken
Any chance a recording made on the master is trying to be transcoded by
the slave? (or vice-versa)  I've got a master/slave backend setup,
and I've noticed that often my transcoding jobs fail because  the
slave tries to process a recording that was made on the master.
Looking at the backend logs on the slave, there's a mesage that states
something to the effect that "remote" transcoding is not allowed.
(unlike commercial flagging, which can be done on any backend
regardless of where the recording was made)  Not sure if this is
what's happening in your case, but I've seen this bug quite
often.

You could try setting your debug level in the backend to verbose (-v) and if that doesn't give you any clues, try -v all.

I had similar problems: When I skip forward with PgDown (+10 min), The
display locks for maybe 10-20 seconds, then I get a couple of seconds
of square blocks, before clearing up. I guess it "clears up" when it
hits a key frame.
I guess the initial delay is due to MythTV not being able of navigating probably due to a corrupt recordedmarkup table.

I tried:

mysqlcheck --repair mythconverg recordedmarkup

and

mythcommflag --all

This solved the delay problem, but the square blocks problem is still
there and in addition I am not able to play these files via dsmyth 0.9
or 0.10 on Windows PCs.
In addition the problem reoccurs on all shows that I have recorded,
automatically transcoded, manually created a cutlist and cut with the
transcoder. Even after the repair of the mythconverg table (I have
repaired and rebuilt with mythcommflag --all twice now). Shows that are
before the last step does not have that problem, so it seems that the
recordedmarkup table is being corrupted during the cutting of the show.
I am running MythTV 0.18.1, so I should be uptodate I think.
Does anyone have an idea of what is going on ?

Best regards

[mythtv-users] A/V Sync issues in recorded programs from PVR-500/PVR-350

2005-09-07 Thread Brad Benson
For the past several weeks I've been getting A/V sync issues in some
(but not all) recordings from my myth box.  It was working great
for over a year with just a single 350 doing recording.  I added a
500 to the system and that was also functioning well for several
months.  Over that time I was using various versions of the ivtv
driver from 0.3.2 up through 0.3.6w.  I finally settled on running
0.3.6w and that was working for about 2-3 months with no
problems.  Suddenly, out of the blue one day, I noticed a few
recordings with A/V sync issues.  It appears that, at some random
point during the recording, a small piece of video is missing but the
audio is fine.  This causes the video to be slightly ahead of the
audio (anywhere from <1 to about 2 seconds).  At the time I
noticed this I hadn't made any recent changes to the system.

Since this started I have discovered that one of the tuners on the
PVR-500 is bad.  I got that card replaced by Hauppage and, as of
last week, installed the replacement 500.  I was hoping that maybe
the bad card had something to do with the issues I'm seeing, but last
night I found another recording with the exact same issue.  I need
to go through and check the log files when the recording is happening,
but it's been difficult to determine exactly when things were recorded
and on which tuner.

I know I haven't provided much information as I'm not at home at the
moment, but I can provide any log files that might be helpful in
looking into this problem.  Has anyone seen similar sync issues on
recordings?  Oh, these are straight MPEG2 directly from the card,
no transcoding is being done, only commercial flagging.  Of the
8-12 recordings a day from my myth box I tend to see this problem on
anywhere from 0 to 3 or 4 of the shows.  I'm now running ivtv
0.3.8 and still seeing the exact same behavior.

Any insight anyone might have is greatly appreciated.

partialy true, it depends on how you open the file(s).
opening nuv file from samba share without checking "always open file
from backend" in setup will probably be a bit slow yes.

checking that box or using myth:// urls like the ones mythweb provieds
is probably going to be more smooth since that will use a small local
cache (ringbuffer) of the file.

note that i don't have any wierless network to test with, so i could be wrong.

> * Changing channels in Live TV mode is buried -- better off just scheduling

true, idealy it should be integrated with the mediaplayer.
without help from the player this can cause problems for the mediaplayer.

> * Windows Media Player isn't perfect for it (might try a different player

yes. if i remeber correctly in v0.10 of the filters and mythtv 0.18
mpeg2 recordings don't update the length properly.
and after 0.18 was released there was some changes in how mpeg2 ps
files is created that made them not work with normal media players.
and now dvb recordings is going to use mpeg2 ts files.

playback of mpeg2 ts files will work in next version (seeking is not
finished yet)

converter

Hi,

I've been using a Red Eye Serial (www.redremote.co.uk) for a while now
with the Linux program on the download page to work with my Telewest
cable box, and it works very well! However, I have just bought a new
system without any serial ports and so bought a Manhattan USB to Serial
converter (a PL2003 device that I am using with SuSE 9.3 - it did say
something about "DEVPATH is not set" in the /var/log/messages file when
I plugged it in).

After plaugging in the RedEye and changing the device to /dev/ttyUSB0 I
can change channels on my Telewest box. ONCE. It only works once, and I
have no idea why. If I remove the USB adaptor and plug it back again, I
can change channel one more time.

Subsequent attempts to change channel still show the RedEye power being
applied as normal (from the red power light) but the light does not
pulse for the channels being sent like it normally does. It just stays
with power light for roughtly the same amount of time, and then
finishes. There are no errors emmitted by the program.

Has anybody had similar trouble, and perhaps knows how to fix this?

I was wondering if the program was not releasing the serial port
properly or something, though the source code looks to be doing so (bear
in mind that I do not know C). I guess I should be able to build a
script that "unplugs" the device via hotplug and reattaches it so the
channel changes work, but this is not really an ideal solution. ;)

Any help appreciated!

Kieron Wilkinson

I do not think this is a big help to newcomers.

I think i can remeber that some time ago when i had problems with transcode i
had to put LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.0 before call to
transcode. will try that too later today.

Look for tags, if you set your font size to "small" also look for
. They are all over.

TV guide is right at the top of ui.xml

[mythtv-users] Red Eye Serial problems with USD to Serial converter

2005-09-07 Thread Kieron Wilkinson

This isn't the right way to fix it. What you need to do is make sure that
the X server is running at 100dpi, which is what all of the themes are for.

This has been covered many times, so just check back in the archives
(http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv) for 100 dpi.

(Hint, set DisplaySize in xorg.conf or give -dpi 100 to X server.)

Cheers,

Martin.

Also, just what do the font size settings in the GUI setup control?

Lee wrote:

The example below is for MythCenter, but you'll ge the idea...

pico /usr/share/mythtv/themes/MythCenter/theme.xml

find the tag, and decrease/increase as necessary, I found
22 was best.
You will have to change to another theme and then back to see the
changes.

I share your experience and would also be happy to know!

All my fonts look too big, and they don't fit well, especially in
places like the program guide where parts of the channel names are
missing. I am using the default blue theme. I tried changing font
size in the first page of the 'Appearance' settings, and I also
tried reducing the font sizes on the QT page (about 5 screens into
the 'Appearance' settings) - also my Qt style is set to Desktop Style.

Nothing seems to make much difference.

How is it supposed to work?

To change the fontsize in the main Myth menus -
The example below is for MythCenter, but you'll ge the idea...

pico /usr/share/mythtv/themes/MythCenter/theme.xml

find the tag, and decrease/increase as necessary, I found 22
was best.

You will have to change to another theme and then back to see the changes.

Re: [mythtv-users] Compiling Mythtv with DVB

2005-09-07 Thread Jon Whitear

Kevin Saenz wrote:

I have given up building a gentoo mythtv box, the version of kernel
and linuxtv-dvb-1.1.1 didn't work happily together.

Which kernel version are you using? The kernel's DVB code is reasonably
up-to-date, so if you're using a fairly recent 2.6 kernel, you probably
don't need to compile in linux-dvb separately.

I have had success with Mandrake 10.0 community and linuxtv-dvb-1.1.1.
So I reinstalled Mandrake10.0 and recompiled linuxtv-dvb against the
kernel. I downloaded, and extracted mythtv-0.18, ran ./configure
--enable-dvb --dvb-path=/usr/src/linuxtv-1.1.1/ then ran qmake
mythtv.pro then make and make install.

The DVB path should be the path to the linux include files. I don't
think that's the same as the linux-dvb source files. If your kernel is
2.6.12 or later, you can (and ./configure will) point to the kernel
source tree: /usr/src/linux/include. If your kernel is earlier, you
mustn't include the kernel source directly - copy just the dvb stuff
somewhere else, and include that.

as a standard user I ran mythtv-setup and configured the capture card
I selected dvb and the message I get is recompile with dvb support.

Where have I gone wrong?

Have you tried doing this as root? Also, have you confirmed that your
DVB card is working using e.g. tzap? Check out Martin Smith's Myth/DVB
set-up guide at:
