Re: [mythtv-users] Sync rates for Sharp 32 inch LCD

2006-01-24 Thread Alex Brekken
I'm running the LC-32GA5*E* (Europe vs USA?), which has D-sub 15 VGA inputas 1280x768, using the modeline
ModeLine "1280x768" 81.135 1280 1328 1440 1688 768 770 776 802if that's of any help. The VGA input does not support 1366x768.HermanWhy wouldn't the VGA input support the full 1366x768 resolution?  Is that something specific that that TV or would that be the case for any VGA input?  The reason I ask is because I'm looking at a Samsung 40" LCD (which is also 1366x768) and was planning on using it's VGA input as I was under the assumption that that was the best route to go if the TV supports it.

[mythtv-users] Which version of xmame is supported?

2006-01-18 Thread Alex Harford
I'm trying to get mythgame working.

I've verified that it's calling the correct path by replacing that
file with a simple script:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]$ cat /usr/bin/xmame
#!/bin/sh

echo $@ > /tmp/xmame.txt
[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]$ cat /tmp/xmame.txt
-version
[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]$ xmame -version
xmame (x11) version 0.102 (Dec 2 2005)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] bin]$ rpm -q mythtv
mythtv-0.18.1-114.rhfc4.at

I have verified that it works by manually specifying a path to the rom
directory and playing a game.

The mythtv documentation seems to indicate that this is a supported version.
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-16.html

Any suggestions on where I can go from here?

Thanks,
Alex

I just wanted to say Greg have done an amazing job! I always wanted to
try fuzzy logic on something, but never had a good candidate. There
always was a simpler way. As for lyngsat and dish customers, on
lyngsat.com there are pages that list the channels by satellites, like
110,119 and 61. Here's an example
http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish61.html Please note that the page
references all the icons from lyngsat-logo.com. If one just needs small
icons, everything could be gathered from those pages. No need to match
call signs or anything like this. Channel numbers are there to rescue.
Now the fun part, the big logos have the same file name but different
location and extension. If one wants the logos instead of icons, all
that needs to be done is to replace /icon/ with /logo/ and change the
file extension into jpg. I wrote a small java program to verify the idea
and it worked for me. I've put it on the web here
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/abaiko/mythlyng.zip
The program needs Java 1.5 to run. mysql connector is included, just
unpack the zip into a folder on your frontend and run it something like
this:
java -jar mythlyng.jar -v
It should locate your mysql.txt file, connect to the server and list
your video sources. Once you know which source corresponds to which
satellite, run it like this:
java -jar mythlyng.jar -d dish110 -s 1
repeat for other sources if desired. Switch -b switches between icons
and logos. Logos are on by default.

The traditional overlay would handle YUV to RGB conversion, scaling, color control, and keying.  I don't have in depth knowledge of the nVidia architecture.  However I would expect most of this is now accomplished using programmable 3D functionality.  The trend is to now render in source resolutions and then scale just before output.  Microsoft has much to do with arrangement.

Newer cores will have less fixed function overlay support, relying on compositing with the 3D engine instead.

I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge regarding HDTV and
FireWire, but could you give me some more details of the setup you're
running? I've got an HD cable box and a great HDTV and I'm wanting to
set up a MythTV box to handle both my regular cable channels and my HD

(either via an IR Blaster or serial/USB interface) to get channels from
my cable box to my MythTV box and then put out the signal via
DVI/Component to the TV? Would I still get the true HD signal out to the

I prefer editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config instead and setting
PasswordAuthentication to no. This ensures that when you ask the SSH
daemon to list its supported authentication methods it doesn't
mistakenly report password authentication. With the pam edit, you'll
still be prompted for a password, it will just be impossible for it to
succeed.

[mythtv-users] RF remote suggestions

2005-12-31 Thread Alex Malinovich
Any suggestions on a good RF remote that works with Linux? I got really
spoiled with my RF remote when I had DishNetwork, and having been
limited to Comcast for the last 3 months the IR remote is killing me. So
I'm hoping to handle all of my channel flipping needs through MythTV and
have an RF remote attached so I won't have to put my feet down to change
the channel.

I'd like to find a relatively inexpensive one as well. While some of the
$700 monsters out there with full LCD displays are impressive and all,
all I care about is play, pause, ff, rw, channel +/-, and, if possible a
built-in IR transmitter to control volume on the TV. (Like the
DishNetwork remotes.)

So if I get an HDTV card like the pcHDTV-3000 and it has support for QAM
(which I believe the 3k does), I can just plug the cable into the card
and have it pick up any unencrypted HD channels? So HBO-HD probably
won't work, but Fox HD should, right? Or is there something else I'm
missing?

And what about encoding the video? If I get a hardware encoder can it
encode HD content the same way as regular content, or am I going to be
looking at doing software encoding for HD?

Thanks much for the help.

[mythtv-users] Recording HD content from a Comcast/Dish/DTV box

2005-12-26 Thread Alex Malinovich
Apologies in advance if this is an often-asked question.

I'm looking at setting up a MythTV box to replace the pathetic excuse
for a PVR that Comcast provides with their HDTV tuner.

I know that there are HDTV cards out there which can receive an OTA HDTV
signal, but what about when the HDTV signal is from a cable box? Is it
possible to run the DVI or component output from the cable box into a
MythTV box, and then from the MythTV box to the TV using DVI/component?

I've been researching all things MythTV for the last two days but I
haven't found anything addressing this particular setup. I've found a
few posts mentioning that you can't run a digital cable signal straight
into a tuner card, but nothing addressing whether you can use the HD
output from the cable box as an HD input on the MythTV box.

TIA for any help.

2005-12-23 Thread Alex Brekken
Playing it back through mplayer looks pretty good - I didn't see any
faults.  THEN, I actually re-named the file to overwrite an
existing show saved on my master machine.  This way I could
playback the show through myth, to make the simulation as accurate as
possible I guess.  Anyway, when viewing the show through Myth, it
DOES have the same slo-mo effect as it does when playing it back via
the slave backend.  So that completely rules out the network as a
possible failing point.

Weird...  As I stated before, I have no problem playing back
recordings made via my PVR-250.  One thing I did notice, the codec
I'm using for PVR-250 recordings is DVD-special2.  I believe
Firewire recordings are TS.  Could this be it??  I wouldn't
think so since then everyone would probably have the same
problem.

Re: [mythtv-users] Glitches in firewire capture from DCT-6200

2005-12-17 Thread Alex Brekken
Steve, running the commands you and curtis specified:

plugctl -n 2 opcr[0].channel=63
plugctl -n 2 opcr[0].bcast_connection=1

greatly improves my firewire reliability.  However, I still find
it almost unusable due to some slowdown/stuttering in the image.
(I also have a PVR-250 which works flawlessly)  I know it's not my
network, so I was very curious to try out the data_rate command you
listed above, thinking that it might fix this issue.  (plugctl -n
2 opcr[0].data_rate=3)

Running this command and then plugreport shows that the data_rate
variable does get set to 3, (before it was zero), HOWEVER, as soon as I
begin to record a show or watch live TV, it immediately gets set back
to zero.  You mentioned that you run this through a cron job every
hour, although I'm finding that if I try to set the data_rate back to 3
while something is recording, it immediately freezes and stops
recording.

Any other tricks or ideas to somehow keep this setting  at 3?  (or anything greater than zero)  On 12/16/05, David Rudder <

David,

Thanks for the advice. I did not know that MADAGASCAR was DRM protected. I
just thought there was a problem in how I setup DVD ripping. So the question
was really innocent, not trying to get information on how to do it. ;-).
Btw, I agree that such discussions should not be part of the list.

[mythtv-users] Problems with DVD rip

2005-11-23 Thread Alex Vishnev
Hello,

I am running FC4 with 0.18.1 version of MythTv. I was trying to rip dvd of
Madagascar. However, every time I tried it I immediately saw the following
message scrolling repeatedly and fast on my xterm window:

fileobs.o: Ripfile wrote 0 bytes, but that's all it was asked to. Unlikely
coincidence?

The file in /var/videolib would go only to 194K and then stop. I have around
200GB more of disk space using ext3 file system under the control of LVM. If
I let the rip process continue, mtd just dies with the following error. Btw
the last couple of lines in mtd.log are just stating that the job started.
No other info is provided:

Can someone help me resolve this?

Re: [mythtv-users] Performance of the HD MPEG2 decoders

2005-11-18 Thread Alex Brekken
Thanks for that info Todd.  I'm in the process of specing out a
new HD capable frontend, and the hardware I'm looking at is very
similar to yours.  My big question, though, was to confirm that an
Athlon64 can playback HD content smoothly without XvmC - and from what
you stated it looks like that answer is yes.  (I assumed it could,
but it seems like people generally have a tougher time with HD on the
AMD chips vs. Intel - at least that's my perception)

Hmmm, and I always thought that an Athlon 3000 or higher could play
smooth HD with no Xvmc...  What's your CPU look like on the AMD
box when playing HD content? On 11/14/05, Robert Lundy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Compared to my AMD athlon 3200, which plays HD choppily without xvmc,
the results have been awesome.  Why are these intel chips so much
better?

Anyway, to get the smooth(er) playback, I started using libmpeg-but the
colors are almost like a negative-people are green, pizza looked
blue.  Weird.

Is this typical behavior?  I'm thinking its reading something
strange about the colorspace.  Video is the Radeon mobility M300
PCIe in a Dell inspiron 9300, using the newest ATI proprietary driver
(released 11/11/05?).

Re: [mythtv-users] smooth video

2005-11-11 Thread Alex Brekken
Marcel,  I have (had) the same choppy video problems as you.
(and I think many people do)  For Xine I have tried the -xshm
option, and while it did smooth things out, it also caused tearing for
me on moving objects.  I then tried -xxmc instead.  This has
been the best option I've found so far - video is quite smooth (though
I haven't compared it back-to-back yet with my standalone DVD
player).

As far as MythTV goes,  Bob deinterlacing is the only way I can
get good smooth video.  XVMC will as well, but it's fairly
unstable for me.  The only drawback to Bob is that it causes the
OSD to flicker a bit.  I can live with that, however, though I
hope someday it might get fixed.  :)

Re: [mythtv-users] Firewire source and channel changer

2005-10-26 Thread Alex Brekken
Brian, I see this exact same issue - the choppy video which you
describe as a "stopping and starting" effect - on my firewire video as
well.  Everything else with my Firewire setup works well, except
this.  The thing is, I see it on standard def. TV as well as HD -
although not all the time and not on every channel.  It's very
random.  My CPU usage looks no different viewing Firewire-recorded
video than it does when I'm viewing video recorded from my
PVR-250.  (which works flawlessly, not choppy at all)
Turning off the "use video as timebase" setting on the frontend seems
to help a bit, but not 100%.

Just for reference, my Firewire box (DCT6200) is hooked up to a Dell P3
1Ghz, which is conifgured as a slave-backend streaming the video to my
master backend/frontend box which is in my living room.  While I
can't prove it, I don't think my network is the issue here - nor is the
harddrive.  I've sorta been assuming that maybe it's a slow PCI
bus/motherboard issue on the Dell box, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I realize you're having other issues with FireWire but I just
thought I'd see if you were seeing this choppy video stuff on non-HD
content as well.

Exactly my thought. The author wrote me earlier today indicating that he
wasn't planning on making it into a Myth plug-in however, he felt that any of
the Myth developers could very easily create it as a plug-in for MythMusic.
So.if there are any developers reading this, how about helping out the
parent of a two year old here, eh? :-)

If only it was me. My two year old LOVES karaoke. The way I see it, karaoke
is just another version of the "Sing Alongs" that I used to watch Sunday
nights on "The Wonderful World of Disney" back in the early 70's. Only with

The FCC is requiring that all over the air broadcasts begin transmitting in
HD by next year (2006). Like you, there are only a handful of shows and only
several stations that are broadcasting in HD. The only station where I live
that transmits in HD all of the time is PBS (Public Broadcasting). And from
what I've been told by folks in the area that are doing HD, PBS has the best
quality picture so far.

From what I've read, you are going to need some horsepower to record in HD.
Not to mention that if you don't have an HD capable TV, what's the point. I
can live with standard definition for now. I'm done jumping on the cutting
edge hardware when it comes to this tech. I did it last when DVD's first came
out and now I have a relly expensive Toshiba player sitting in storagethat
can't play much. Even with the firmware upgrade, it has a hard time with
certain newer DVD's. I can wait :-)

[mythtv-users] MythKaraoke?

2005-10-22 Thread Alex Cruz
Don't ask me how this came to mind but has anyone thought about the
possibility of creating a plugin for Karaoke inside of Myth? Upon searching
this list, all references to a karaoke module are well over a year old. Doing
a Google search, I've found 2 apps that run under Linux:

http://www.kibosh.org/pykaraoke/index.php
and
http://miageprojet.unice.fr/twiki/bin/view/Fun/JavaKarPlayer

Considering that most Myth setups are hooked up to a TV, something like this
would be a fun add-on. Just a thought in case anyone with some coding powers
feels like taking on a task like this. Thanks.

I second the obsession part. I am currently saving up $$ to buy a smaller,
nicer case and yes...a much, MUCH quieter Zantec CPU cooler. After that,
it'll be a HD upgrade to something in the 200 GB range cause there's no such

Great news on the DVB!! Now it's looking like you're where I was about 3
months ago which was "Do I continue using my workstation to mess with MythTV
or do I build a dedicated unit?" I decided to build the standalong and I'm
glad I did. Now, I'm not screwing up my workstation when I want to tweak Myth

want to just taking the plunge. My next step is to find a nicer looking case
and to get a quieter fan for the CPU. It's amazing how noisey those damn

How about trying one of the "quickstart" distros like KnoppMyth or MythDora.
Personally, I moved away from the Mandrake based distros a while ago. Too
much overhead. If you're feeling up to the challenge, you can install Gentoo
and create a truly customized Myth install. It's what I run on my laptop.

2005-10-18 Thread Alex Cruz
Ah, DVB cards. There's a reason I decided to stick with the plain old
PVR-250. Since I only have cable (I can't get Direct or Dish in my current
location) and I've decided to wait until 2010 for HDTV to standardize (my
theory of when the US will get it's crap together) the 250 was an obvious
choice. Also, since I only wanted to replace my VCR, the quality is good
enough. One thing I totally agree on, Xine is doing some pretty good stuff
with video and TV. I always wondered why it wasn't used for TV like it is for
DVD and Video playback. Anyway, it looks like you are certainly receiving a
number of replies on this subject. Hopefully, something here will help. Have

Re: [mythtv-users] Starting to think I should use Kaffeine instead of Mythtv

2005-10-18 Thread Alex Cruz
I suppose it all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a HTPC,
then MythTV is one option. There's also Freevo under Linux and several "free"
one's under Windows. As for picture quality in LiveTV and recording, what I
am watching is acceptable for non-HD television. On my system I use TV,
Music, Videos, DVD, Images, Games, Weather and Phone. And yes, I prefer the
old menu structure. Easier to navigate IMHO and the wifey prefers it ;-)

Also, not wanting to compile my own due to time restrictions (try explaining
to a two year old why I have to compile the "TV"), I use KnoppMyth as my
distribution. Yes, you will still need to tweak it and update a few drivers
depending on your capture card but overall, it's worth it and does a good job
(thanks, Cecil). As for themes, I am currently using a custom configuration
of Myxer. Waiting for the iPod theme that's been posted on here several times
to see if it'll look good on my set.

As for support, I've found that between this mailing list and the KnoppMyth
forums, all of my questions have been answered or I've been able to find them
with the help of others. Myth can be extremely frustrating during the install
and tweak time (believe me, I know). But IMHO, it's been worth it. I can open
a browser and schedule recordings, I can listen to my MP3 collection using my
stereo system instead of my laptop and headphones, being able to choose which
"JoJo's Circus" my kid wants to watch on the TV, etc, etc. It's all in what
you want to make it. And one thing no one will lie to you about: what type of
hardware you use in which compenent (frontend or backend) makes a HUGE
difference. I'm willing to help if I can. That's why I read this list and
post when and what I am capable of helping with.

Re: LVM *was* Re: [mythtv-users] Highest number of simultaneous streams recorded?

2005-10-17 Thread Alex Brekken
Thanks Brandon, that makes sense.  For a masterbackend server that
will probably have at most 2 clients, I don't get the feeling that
striping the drives is necessary from a performance standpoint.
I'm still trying to decide how to tackle the redundancy/backup
issue.   I'm wondering if doing this via RAID is
overkill  Rather than introduce that complication maybe I
should just manually back the drives up every so often.  On 10/17/05, Brandon Beattie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Raid 0 is striping for performance but no redundancy.  Any other raidlevel (2,3,4,5,10) does redundancy.  LVM basically gives you virtualpartitions on top of anything that's set as an LVM partition type via
fdisk.  Some people use LVM ontop of raid.  Someone may do raid 5 forredunancy and use LVM on top to allow them to shrink and grow virtualpartitions as they want to move space around for mount points, but still
have redunancy (Since LVM doesn't do redundancy).  The only thing likeraid LVM does is striping - but you can't resize a striped LVM partion,so LVM striping and Raid 0 are somewhat alike.--Brandon

Re: [mythtv-users] Firewire and DCT-6200

2005-10-16 Thread Alex Brekken
Wow!!  Big improvement for me.  As I posted earlier, my
firewire reliability was only around 60% (at best).  Since running
these commands I'm batting 100% so far.  It's only been a day, but
I've tested it quite a bit and haven't had any "false starts" from
either live tv or recordings from firewire.  I also changed from
point-to-point to broadcast, and changed the speed from 400 mbps to 100
mbps as suggested.  I doubt these were the reason for the change
since I've played with those settings quite a bit before with no
improvement in reliability.

Question:  since I have no idea what these plugctl commands really
do, I'm wondering if they need to be re-run anytime the machine is
rebooted...?

Thanks Curtis for the great find! I know there's quite a few other
Firewire users who have the same reliability problems, so I hope they
give this a try.

setup. Now, the test-mpeg2 command works EVERY time (don't use the -r 1argument, just test-mpeg2). Also, mythtv "Watch TV" command worksEVERY time where before it worked maybe 50% of the time or hung.
I have yet to see if it helps with my recordings being cut short butI'll let the list know how it goes.If anyone else benefits from this, please post your results.ThanksCurtis

[mythtv-users] Lousy video quality with standard v4l

2005-10-16 Thread Alex Polite
Hi.

I'm moving from freevo to mythtv. Mythtv's standard interface and web
interface are superior to those of freevo. Unfortunatly I can't say
the same thing for the video quality. Under freevo I used a mencoder
script to do my recordings and the quality is vastly superior to those
of myth.

One problem I'm having is that the contrast is to far to high. I get
very little detail in the dark and light areas. Reducing contrast when
viewing (by pressing G) will just make the image greyer, it doesn't
actually give me more detail.

Does anyone recognise this? Are there any filters that remedy it?

RE: [mythtv-users] /dev/lirc missing during FC4 setup

2005-10-15 Thread Alex Vishnev
Hmmm... I built lircd and lircmd from sources. The binaries are in
/usr/local/sbin on my distribution. You may have it in a different place. I
suggest searching the drive for them (i.e. find / -name lircd -print) to see
where the utilities are. The reason lircd fails when you start irw, is
because /dev/lirc can't be stat'ed or opened. In order to get the device
back, you need to make sure that lirc can open and attach to your IR device.
IR device must be plugged into the card. please do what I suggested in
modprobe and grab the output of /var/log/messages to see what messages you
get when you load the modules. Please note that the order of load is
important. You need to load lirc-dev first, followed by lirc_i2c. Assuming
everything works well and lirc modules can determine and attach to your IR
card, then you can start lircd and lircmd servers/daemons

lircd and lircmd are not found when I attempt to run them. I thought
that lircd was a service. Normally I run it by /sbin/service lircd
restart. It starts but will die the second I attempt to run irw.

What I'm curious about is why lirc_i2c is not creating the device that
is needed.

When I plug the IR receiver into the 150, if I leave it halfway plugged
in, the red IR transmitter comes on and stays on. If I plug it all the
way in, it turns off. Which way should it be?

Also, I'll post by modules.conf as soon as I can. Hopefully someone
could point out something that I'm doing wrong.

Thanks again.

2005-10-14 Thread Alex Vishnev
This is what I have done to fix lirc.. I am not sure why modprobe does not
load it properly sometimes. When I boot, I go to the command line and issue

modprobe lirc-dev
modprobe lirc_i2c
lircd
lircmd

That fixed the problem for me. It recreated the devices and link them
properly.

I'm having a very similar problem. (PVR 150 retail)

Initially, following Jarod Wilson's instruction to the letter, my setup
is working just fine, and the remote works.

/dev/lirc0 exists, and /dev/lirc points to it. There's also /dev/lircd

I can watch live tv, play music, etc ... just fine.

And suddenly, while watching live TV, I go to change the channel... The
remote simply stops responding.

only /dev/lircd is left

trying irw, it simply exits.

mythbackend & mythfrontend don't echo any error messages.

nothing new in /var/log/messages

nothing in modprobe.conf has changed, no software was updated.

reloading the modules or rebooting doesn't solve the problem. the
devices are simply never created ...

If one wanted redundancy only (is that RAID-0??)  then I take it
you would skip LVM entirely, correct?  - IOW, are the 2 mutually
exclusive or can you use LVM with RAID?  The reason I ask is
because I'm starting to put together some plans to build a master
backend server (currently I have a frontend/backend combo) which will
not only house myth and it's recordings, but also all of my music and
pictures/videos of the kids.  (the latter of which I would want
the redundancy in case of a drive failure).  On 10/14/05, Steve Adeff <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Very nice. While I absolutely stink at coding, I would be more than happy to

the need arises. One of the things I would ask is to make sure the EPG is

FireWire card.  The main issue I have is the same that I've seen
many other Firewire users complain about, which is often times when
starting a recording (or LiveTV) it doesn't actually capture
anything.  So you get either a zero-size file, or it just times
out.  If you keep trying it will work, but I would say that
roughly 40% of the time it doesn't.  Once it DOES start capturing
it's great, but it's nowhere near reliable enough for me to use it as
anything more than as an experimental thing.  Channel-changing,
however, does work flawlessly all the time.  On 10/12/05, Big Wave Dave <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I'm running the latest "stable" (non-bleeding) RPMs, and have the same

My FireWire card:

If I recall correctly, it was listed in linux1394.org

Re: [mythtv-users] diskless backend?

2005-10-10 Thread Alex Brekken
To be honest, I don't know if this would work, but even if it did - I'm
curious to know what the benefit would be?  When watching liveTV
you'll be doing a full roundtrip with the video-stream across your
network.  Why not just do the capturing where the disks are and
have a diskless frontend?  On 10/10/05, Joe Harvell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Also, when watching live TV, does the backend read from the file andstream to the backend?  Or does it take what it is capturing and bothwrite it to the file and stream it to the frontend?  If it reads it from

This was indeed the most dificult part for me in tweaking Myth to fit my TV
(Toshiba 32" Cinema Series). It took modifying and restarting GDM a number of
times before I felt that the interface was at a readable level. The real
killer was getting the Program Guide to a readable point since not all themes
use the same font size (which really erked me). Just make sure you back-up
your XF86Config file once your happy with it in case you, let 's say, lose
your 120 GB HD and haven't backed it up ;-)

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Comcast being coy?

2005-10-07 Thread Alex Brekken
Agreed.  About the only claim to fame that the Comcast DVR box has
is that it will record HD.  I don't *think* any of the other
cable/satellite provided DVR's can do that.  (yet)   If you
really want a commercial DVR then go TiVo.  On 10/7/05, Brad Benson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

No, the Comcast HD-DVR is crap.  My sister has one and the storage
space is severely lacking.  I don't recall off hand how many hours
it can store, but it's not much more than 10, if that.  Also, they
seem to have a serious bug in them.  If the DVR is powered off and
it is scheduled to record a show it will actually begin the recording,
but not display to the user that it is powered on and working.  If
you then hit the power button while it is recording it will turn on and
display video so you can watch TV on the second tuner.  However,
the second tuner is MUTED.  I have yet to find a way to get it to
unmute other than turning off the DVR (which kills whatever recording
was in progress) and then turning it back on.  Also, it clearly
has two tuners since you can record and watch at the same time, but I
also haven't yet been able to get it to record two shows at once.
If there's two tuners in there I see no reason why it shouldn't be able
to record two shows if I'm not using either of the tuners to watch TV.

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Comcast being coy?

2005-10-07 Thread Alex Brekken
No, you don't need (or want) the DVR version.  The DCT-6200 box is
what you want.  The Comcast reps definitely don't know what
they're talking about, and have no idea what Firewire is.
However, if you have them search their knowledge base for "IEEE-1394"
(the technical name for Firewire)  they will find a blurb that
states how "they must enable the port due to a new law/regulation blah
blah blah."  Regardless, just have them send you a 6200 and you'll
be fine.

As to what channels you actually get, this is something that seems to
vary from market to market.  I'm in the Twin Cities, and I get all
analog and digital channels, with the exception of the HBO's.
(interetsingly, I used to get the HBO's but now I don't...)

[mythtv-users] FW: firewire help

2005-10-02 Thread Alex Pedenko
Hey all

I'm trying to work through some firewire issues. At first, I had
it setup in a p2p configuration and it worked intermittently, cutting
out every other video request (or so). I found a few threads in the
archives about boxes that show up on node 1 liking broadcast more, so I
did that and that helped a bit - now it would take a few times after a
reboot to get video, but then it was rock solid. Now I can't even get
video. When I try through test-mpeg2, it sends a feed, but if I fire up
the front end right after and try to watch tv either nothing happens
(backend shows the standard 15s timeout) or it crashes out on me with

Re: [mythtv-users] Simplifying the instalation? (everyone wants that!) - ideas for thought

2005-09-16 Thread Alex Cruz
Having used both KnoppMyth and MythDora, I can say that both of these are
"almost there" in regards to the 3rd group. Each distribution has some
excellent post install features but still require getting your hands dirty in
order to get Myth wokring exactly like you want. Both have their pros and
cons and until you try either with your hardware configuration, you won't
know which works best for you. As with all operating systems, the real killer
with a project like MythTV are drivers. Trying to find all of the drivers
that work with your hardware can be frustrating (try installing XP64
sometime) but once you get over that hump, the rest is Nirvana.

I totally love this application and have been pushing it on my co-workers that
have either TiVO, Replay or Windows Media Center to try out and prove that
MythTV isn't better than what they currently have. The only grip so far have
been with the themes (or lack there of). They really aren't easy to
manipulate if you want to tweak them.

http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-11.html#ss11.8Set the rule name to "Battlestar Galactica", cut'n'paste this into thetext box:
program.seriesid = "SH710749""Test" to be sure, then click "Record" and choose "Record at any timeon any channel". This rule will only match shows from the new series
and not the old series from the '70s.If you've been keeping up with the series and only want the newepisodes within two weeks of when they are first shown, then:program.seriesid = "SH710749"
AND program.previouslyshown = 0As I test this now, I get matches for three showings of "Final Cut"this week and three showings of "Flight of the Phoenix" next weekwith no episodes of the old series or re-runs from the new series.

Re: [mythtv-users] Some confusion on "record weekly" schedules...

2005-09-09 Thread Alex Brekken
Thanks guys, yes Brad you're right.  I tried removing both weekly
schedules, then added them both back but added the Friday schedule
first.  This corrected the problem.  Now Friday's episode
will record, and Monday's episode shows a "E" next to it, which is
correct.  (after Friday's episode has been recorded then I assume
the Monday episode will show a "P" or "R", depending upon if I deleted
the recording or not)

The "Find and record one showing of this title each week" option would
be OK, but on the off chance that both Friday's and Monday's schedule
would play a diffferent episode, then I'd miss one.

To answer some other questions from Bruce, the reason I didn't setup a
"Record All" is because SciFi also plays the "old" BattleStar
Gallactica shows which I don't want recorded.  As such, I figured
the record weekly route would be the way to go since it pinpoints a
specific time-slot in which I know the new series is being
shown.   I have read the Myth docs on this topic, but when it
discusses recording priorities it's within the context of conflicts,
which is why I raised this question as there really was no conflict
happening here.

Thanks again,

Yes, there's a fine point of Myth's scheduler that you're
missing.  When attempting to determine which showing of an episode
should be recorded, Myth looks at many factors (tuner priority,
priority for that specific recording rule, channel priority,
etc).  I'm going to assume here that you've set the same priority
for both of your recording rules.  Since the rest of the details
of those two rules are the same, then both the Friday and Monday
episodes would have the exact same priority.  When Myth sees two
showings with the same priority, it prefers the one that matches the
recording rule that was added first.  Since you set up the Monday
recordings prior to setting up the Friday recordings it's most likely
choosing the Monday recording because that rule was entered
first.  Incidentally, you might want to remove one of those
duplicate recording rules and set the other one to "Find and record one
showing of this title each week".  That would allow Myth to record
one episode each week and still choose between the Friday and Monday
showings to avoid conflicts.

[mythtv-users] Some confusion on "record weekly" schedules...

2005-09-08 Thread Alex Brekken
Hey guys, I've got what might be an easy question regarding Myth's
handling of weekly recording schedules.  I've got a "record
weekly" schedule set up for the new Battlestar Gallactica series on
SciFi every Monday night, 10:00pm CDT.  I've had this setup for a
few weeks now, and it works great.  Today, however, I noticed that
SciFi also has a Friday night at 9:00pm showing of Battlestar, so I
setup a "record weekly" schedule for that listing as well.  I've
since discovered that the episode that shows on Monday night is a
repeat of the previous Friday night, or at least that what it looks
like so far.  Nevertheless, I opted to keep both schedules in
place, figuring that even if they are the same episode Myth will sort
that out for me and only record one.

Looking at my schedule recordings page on Mythweb, here's what I
see:  for this Friday evening (tomorrow), Myth is NOT going to
record this episode and has a code of "L" next to the showing, which
apparently means it will "record this showing at a later time
instead."  For Monday, Myth WILL record that showing of
Battlestar.

Now I fully understand that Myth should only record 1 of the 2 showings
since they're the exact same episode, however I can't figure out why
it's electing to record Monday's episode instead of Friday's since
Friday is an earlier date.  There's no other recording happening
on Friday at the same time which would interfere.  (I've got dual
tuners, so that wouldn't matter anyway)  What I would expect to
see is that Myth would record Friday's episode, and skip Monday's with
an indication on Monday's schedule of "P" for "previously
recorded."

Does this seem like a problem to anyone else, or am I just misunderstaning how the behavior is supposed to work?

Re: [mythtv-users] Automatic transcoding

2005-09-07 Thread Alex Brekken
Any chance a recording made on the master is trying to be transcoded by
the slave? (or vice-versa)  I've got a master/slave backend setup,
and I've noticed that often my transcoding jobs fail because  the
slave tries to process a recording that was made on the master.
Looking at the backend logs on the slave, there's a mesage that states
something to the effect that "remote" transcoding is not allowed.
(unlike commercial flagging, which can be done on any backend
regardless of where the recording was made)  Not sure if this is
what's happening in your case, but I've seen this bug quite
often.

I tried the manual version on the command line of a recording thatpreviously failed and it finished ok so there was no indication as to whythe autotranscode failed. Is there a command-line switch or something I can use to get more

You could try setting your debug level in the backend to verbose (-v) and if that doesn't give you any clues, try -v all.

[mythtv-users] Upgraded to 0.18.1, having ivtv, mythfrontend problems

2005-09-03 Thread Alex Harford
I recently upgraded my mythtv box, and I'm having a few problems. I
went from FC3 to FC4 using yum, and then upgraded mythtv-suite to
0.18.1 by pointing yum to the ATrpms repository.

This is on a Pundit-R box that was previously working great once it
got set up, but I wanted to get the time scale feature, so I upgraded.

Here's the list:

1) IVTV volume

It wants to set the PVR-350 volume to 64845 when it starts recording a
new show, which is causing distortion because the volume is so high.
Turning it down during playback results in quieter, but still
distorted audio.

Previously I set it in /etc/rc.local with this command:

/usr/bin/ivtvctl -y volume=58950

and things worked just fine.

Has anyone encountered this before? I only had 1 hit for '64845 ivtv'
in google. :(

2) Realtime priority would require SUID as root.

I get a message in mythfrontend's logfile that "Realtime priority
would require SUID as root." I set mythfrontend to be suid root with
the 'chmod u+s /usr/bin/mythfrontend' but it didn't seem to do
anything.

ls -l `which mythfrontend` results in:

-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 1029600 Jun 27 19:00 /usr/bin/mythfrontend

3) Mythfrontend crashing

Occasionally mythfrontend will crash when pressing the Back/Exit
button, or when a show finished. I'm not sure what logging options to
enable for this one, running 'mythfrontend --verbose general' didn't
put any useful messages in the logfile. Any suggestions on how to
track this down would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Mark, I don't have a solution for you but I'm wondering what issues
you're having with the Firewire-made recordings? I'm having issues
with playback of Firewire recordings where the video "slows down"
every couple of seconds. It only happens on digital channels (though
not all digital channels...) and I've wondered if it's a file issue
too as these same recordings playback just fine using mplayer from a
command line.Just curious, thanks.

What does did not work mean? Did you get an error? What happens when
you try the script from the command line. Does the serial port in the
script match the one you have the receiver connected to? By default the
script uses /dev/ttyS0.

Probably not, as you set the devices to 777. There are so many other
things it could be like: cable is wired wrong, script is not the right
one for that receiver, is the script set to the same device you have the
directv receiver plugged into. BTW, on some (most?) Linux distros the
dev entries are created dynamically and the permissions may be reset
after a reboot. So don't reboot (this isn't Winblows after all).

In this case shouldn't be a problem.

All I used the windows program to test if the serial cable and sat b55
box are working properly. No issues changing channels works fine. I
went into bios and set the serial ports to use irq 4, irq 3 and then
reserved IRQ 3 and IRQ4.

I tried the Sony0.pl script but I get an error message when trying to
run it from command prompt "bad interpreter: no such file or

When I try to run the original sony.pl I get an error (0x00)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[mythtv-users] DirectTV external tuner help

2005-08-02 Thread Alex Van Deusen
Hello I am using Debian/Knoppmyth. I tried the forums at mysettopbox
but no answer.

I have a Sony Bat55 directv box. It is connected via a serial cable to
my mythbackend. The ports are enabled in bios.

I downloaded the script from tarek "sony.pl". Then put it into
/usr/local/sony.pl. In mythtv-setup I set the command to reference
that location.

I tried to to have myth record and change channels but it did not work.

Checked setserial dev/ttyS0 and dev/ttyS1 from user but I got nothing.

So I did

chmod 755 /usr/local/sony.pl
chmod 777 /dev/ttyS0
chmod 777 /dev/ttyS1

rebooted backend

didnt work

I then logged in as root su, when I did setserial dev/ttyS0 it gave me
correct information and listed irq4, dev/ttyS1 is irq3

It seems like it is a problem with the user not having access, but I
dont know how to troubleshoot.

One note I am sharing IRQ's, I have 5 capture cards in the box, and
scsi, agp, etc..
