[neonixie-l] Dekatron themed clothing!

2014-07-15 Thread laingt
Hi I have recently found a web site that sells all kinds of clothing and
mugs etc with lots of interesting artwork. Users can upload their own
images and vintage (non copyright) adverts etc. So you can get a shirt
made with your image on it but also offer them for sale to others. They
print on demand and ship fast.
I am not related in any way to the website but I have perchased several
shirts and a mug. Note they offer all kinds of online discounts so the
prices are much lower than what is listed.
Well I found a whole line of Dekatron clothing. Below are a couple of
links.

Dekatron "YOU CAN COUNT ON ME" shirt.
http://www.cafepress.com/mf/85489468/dekatron_tshirt?productId=1210771642

Dekatron Neon Blanket wrap.
http://www.cafepress.com/+dekatron_neon_blanket_wrap,1280589343

Dekatron Neon Tea Tumbler.
http://www.cafepress.com/+dekatron_neon_tea_tumbler,1280589347

I will probably be puttins some artwork up on Cafepress one of these days.

Who is going to do a CD47 shirt!
 Enjoy

Looking for a CRT for a 576 curve tracer. The one I have is dim and has
the classic double peak when adjusting the intensity. I know the CRT for
the 576 is unique to that scope. The part numbers that this scope can use
are 154-0563-00 or 01 or 02. I don't have my hopes too high. Thanks Tim

[neonixie-l] dekatron computing [and other stuff]

2014-02-08 Thread laingt
Kind of rotten to not even get an E-mail. I would say this outfit isn't
run very well, or just doesn't care. Commonly I see places that have fund
raisers or appeals for other help put bricks with people's and company's
names in the walkway or patio that was built etc. Or why not a brass
plaque on or next to the machine that shows the hardware donors?? Or a
nice letter and a Nice Tee shirt that says "Ask me about Witch Dekatron I
donated!" Or stick a bad tube on a little wooden base with a brass plate.
Basically it comes down to poor management and a lack grateful
acknowledgment or gratitude. It is not too late to do any of these
things, especially since this has been called to their attention. What
are they going to do when they need replacements or other parts. With the
web the word gets out. In fact this is the kind of thing that ends up
showing up in web searches forever.

Nick, I don't think there are any external sensors. These units are
analog simulators. They probably had a big set of patch panels that
allowed wiring the various analog elements to simulate a cars suspension
system etc. using the various log, sine and cosine etc circuits. You
would simulate a shock and spring using caps resistors and the various
amplifiers and oscillators. At least that is my limited impression of
these things.
I saw a much larger version of these analog computers that was used for
airframe testing/design. Boeing donated one to Ohio Northern
Universitie's Engineering dept. It was still in a room when I was going
to college in the early 80s. I was a faculty brat so I ran around the
University all through my childhood so I knew the University from the
late 60s to 1986. I never saw it used for anything in all those years
though. I remember a huge section of patch panels with hundreds of
jumpers going all over the place. At one time analog computers were
much more powerful and faster than any digital computers for doing
complicated simulations of physical systems. I don't know very much more
about analog computers.

[neonixie-l] Green glow in gas

2014-01-11 Thread laingt
I have several different plasma globes of different designs. Two of them
have clear glass and do have a white and distinctly green glow. One I
bought at Walmart on clearance, it is not a ball but more of a low dome.
The other is a Radio Shack Realistic Lightning Fury. These are not common
on E-bay but there is one up for bid right now. Auction 171211843616 not
my auction, don't know the seller. The seller says white but when it is
turned down to give the softer display there is a lot of green. I will
try to get some pictures. Often times these are hard to photograph and
have the colors come out as seen by the eyeball. Do some searches on gas
fills for plasma globes. I remember reading about how to get the different
colors. It has been several years since I read about the gasses.

[neonixie-l] WW 2 IFF transponder. Nixie Test equipment.

2014-01-05 Thread laingt
Hi when I said my area may drop below freezing I meant inside the shop! I
am in Lima Ohio (North West Ohio) We have snow now temp 32 climbing to 34
during the day (quite warm compared to the last few days) Just enough to
make everything wet and slushy under the several inches of snow predicted
for today. Then the temps drop to -3 by 8AM tomorrow with temps dropping
to -15F winds 20-30MPH. I will be getting off work at about 6:15AM. I
have an 87 Audi Quattro that I don't drive much and I was planning to take
it to work. Well now the battery is bad. ( I think a bad cell). Charged it
the other day to top it off and it was weak 3 days later. So battery,
starting fluid. Oh the fun. We aren't like you Minnesotans we don't have
block heaters and places to plug them in at if we did. All my mothers
relatives are from MN. Lindstrom area. My sister lives in St Paul. Where
do you guys live?

I will get some pictures of the nixie gear soon, I have a couple of
dekatron counters as well. O-scopes. Antique radios, antique scientific
gear. I can take some general pictures as long as there are no neat
freaks here to chastise me for the mess/messes!

[neonixie-l] WW 2 IFF transponder. Nixie Test equipment.

2014-01-04 Thread laingt
On the test equipment, most of it is either on shelves or fairly easy to
get to. I can power most of it up but have to get a long extension cord
to do so. A lot of this stuff is heavy so pulling it out to plug in is a
bit of a chore as well.
I am working this weekend, off Monday morning. My lair is not well
heated and we are supposed to hit 40 year records for the lows on
Monday/Tuesday. (I am in NW Ohio) Go to www.weather.com and enter 45801
for the zip to see what we are going to get. It is windy and we are
supposed to get several inches of snow on Sunday as well. My area may
drop below freezing. So the long and short of it is, weather permitting
I will get some pictures :-)
It really disturbs me that I can't find the IFF unit. Maybe the
demolition charges took care of it! I would have sworn I knew right
where it was...

[neonixie-l] WW 2 IFF transponder.

2014-01-01 Thread laingt
I have a surplus WW 2 IFF transponder box that I picked up a couple of
years ago at one of the hamfests for under $10. In unused condition, very
nice with acorn tubes and a doorknob tube for the transmitter. I think it
operates on 433MHz. I had an another one of these I picked up when I was
in high school that had been partly gutted to make some type of ham
transceiver in the 1950s. It came with the CQ mag that had the mod article
in it. One interesting item was/ the bottom cover has 6 or 8 electrical
fittings for thermite? demolition charges so if the plane was going down
you hit the button before bailing out. The article said there was some
after war excitement because some of these units went into the surplus
channels with the demolition charges still in place!
Tim L.
My unit is just a rather uninteresting black box, the controls were
somewhere else.

[neonixie-l] Update on the NL5440A contest, Some E-bay sockets & a shameless plug

2013-12-27 Thread laingt
I just got this note from Jorge

Tim:

The tubes arrived safely, Thanks for the excellent packaging. During the
Xmas vacation I am doing the layout of a board for the tubes and the RGB
LEDs that will generate all the colors my daughter likes. Work in
progress, I guess. I bought some of the sockets off ebay. Those will
arrive before the year is over. Merry Xmas to you and your family.

Jorge

We look forward to seeing pictures of the finished project!

For anybody needing some NL544x series sockets or NL84X series sockets
there are some on E-bay right now at reasonable BIN prices. E-bay
auction 261352976839 for the NL544x series tube sockets. E-bay auction
251402334378 for the NL84x series tube sockets. Disclaimer not my auction
not affiliated with the seller etc.

Now my shameless plug. I have 2 sets of 6 NL5440As up on E-bay ending
tonight E-bay auctions 281231422331 and 281231423402. Priced pretty
reasonably right now. Ends tonight in about 13 hours. Standard

[neonixie-l] Winner!?!!! Re: [TCA] Re: Shameless Plug, and Contest/Giveaway for NL5440As

2013-12-13 Thread laingt

Hello, I am a bit slow here. Well no votes came in on the submissions from
the group. I read all the submissions to my local judge (Maria, my wife).
We both really liked the seasons tree. For the season that it is, it is
very adaptable for occasions other than Christmas(Hey it could count down
to Christmas!) and also for the father daughter aspect. So it is my
inclination to reward the tubes to Jorge and his daughter. I liked the
other two submissions as well and I want to thank everybody that
responded. So I said there would be a vote what does everybody think
of Jorge getting the tubes?

I should have thought of a deadline for this contest so here goes.

I think 8 AM Eastern Standard Time on this coming Thursday Dec 12th would
be a good deadline for turning in ideas. Votes would be taken till
Midnight Thursday. (In case of a tie, I will flip a coin.) I get off work
Friday morning and if we have a winner selected the night before I can
mail the tubes out on Friday. Hopefully they can arrive before Christmas.

I have seen single bubble light, night lights here and there.

How about a string of 201As and Blue glass Arcturus 201As hung on the tree
and lit up (Brass based tipped, even better) I almost forgot the super
airline Gold glass GX201As And 200As no silver getter to block the light.
So gold, silver, blue, clear. Would make quite a set.
More modern you could use neon Voltage regulator tubes. I don't know
how much light miniature xenon thyratrons would put out? Or eye tubes of
various types? HV could come from some of the Taylor Edge switcher
supplies.

[neonixie-l] More pictures of the Christmas lights, as requested

2013-11-24 Thread laingt
Here are some more pictures. I got 13 lamps of various types, the string
only takes 8 lamps. So a bit of a mishmash. I need to repair several of
the sockets before I can try to light the set.

I think the wiring is older than the lamps? The lamps are all marked
Japan 15 volt. Some of the bulbs appear to be older than the others.
I was just wondering if the best nail to use would be a coffin nail!
Well it might be a nail in the testers coffin.

I will repost the first 2 pictures as well.

[neonixie-l] Antique Lamp...Neons...Tubes

2013-11-23 Thread laingt
I found an interesting web site www.bulbcollector.com (Probably known to
a lot of you all ready.) that has a lot of interesting information on
various types of antique lamps and some tube related info as well.
On the bulbs they cover incandescent, neon, argon etc. What caught my
eye was the following page www.bulbcollector.com/article005.html This
page covers early neon and figural advertising lamps. There is quite a
bit of information and references to the patent numbers. There is even
a drawing of a neon lamp with segments brought out to make an animated
walking man! This looks right up Dalibor Farnı's alley! With Dalibor's
knowledge and modern etching methods some pretty neat things could be
made with the nixie clocks. How about a little animated man in place of
the colons?

There is reference to how Birdseye got started in the neon lamps by buying
out another company.
For the TCA there is a series of pages with pictures of some real neat
tube boxes as well.

[neonixie-l] Re: Mouser Electronics for electronic parts

2013-11-17 Thread laingt
I did some more checking and Mouser has no minimum order, that according
to their help topics page. The shipping options come up when you check
out. For the small parts I was ordering I used the lowest cost option as I
am in no hurry. The parts arrived quickly, they ship out very quickly! I
placed an order late at night and realized I forgot a part. I called early
in the morning when the customer service line opened. I told the lady I
needed to add a part to my order. She said it was too late it had all
ready been packed and shipped! Better yet for me she gave me free shipping
for my extra part, that was very nice! Another nice thing about mouser is
that you can share your project list with other people.
I checked on Newark and they say no minimum order charges. I ordered
from them $175 worth of parts and the shipping was a very reasonable
$8.04. The outer box the parts came in was ridiculous. My parts would
have fit in a box half the size of a shoe box. They came in a box about
18x24x36 inches! What a waste of materials and shipping space. This
seems pretty normal for a lot of commercial purchases I make.

[neonixie-l] Mouser Electronics for electronic parts

2013-11-17 Thread laingt

Mouser is a great source for new electronic parts. Their selection is
about as good as Newark or Allied but they are much more small buyer
friendly. They have a real cheap shipping option ($4.95?) and if I
remember right no minimum order. It is easy to set up an account. They
ship fast and they have a nice project builder tool. The search tools work
well. I have made several purchases from them for antique radio rebuilds
and have been very happy.
I hate to see a tube type Tek scope dismantled for high voltage caps
unless it is trashed.

[neonixie-l] Thoughts on nixie lifespan and halogens...

Couldn't you just use a piece of canned tuna fish in each nixie? Tuna has
mercury in it and I eat the stuff! Just joking of course.

But I must add GREAT job on the nixies! Well not really great how about
outstanding job!

I have a VFD alarm clock that I bought broken at the Findlay Ohio Hamfest

something in the electronics died. The Display still lit up ok but the

[neonixie-l] Re: Z564S dekatrons

2013-07-21 Thread laingt
Oh that gets complicated. I did a group buy for over 1000 Nixie tubes
for the Neonixie group some years ago. Boy that was a lot of work. I
shipped tubes all over North America, Canada and Europe.
It might be easier for you to see how many tubes are wanted in the US and
Europe. Then maybe ship 2 boxes of tubes, one to somebody in the US that
could then ship to other people in the US. The other box would go to
somebody in Europe that could divide up the tubes and ship to the other
people who bought tubes.
I have no idea on the going price for this particular type of Dekatron.
Most of what I have are the common ones and I got most of them for under
$10 each. I would expect that these are going for more. I could go
something around $20-25 each. (If they would be less, that would be
great.) If you have a price a lot higher than $20-25 in mind I would have
to do some serious thinking first. Due to an upcoming trip my budget is
rather strained right now :-o The bank account is going ouchy!

I copied the link from this E-mail and tested that it works in a new

RCA display tube. Glassworking tools. Benchtop vacuum system.

[neonixie-l] Bruce Nauman Neon and Art

2013-02-07 Thread laingt
Well I have a BFA dual majors in Ceramics and Printmaking. I can't ever
remember any of my friends having discussions about circles striving to be
squares etc. For the most part we were normal people and not pretentious
at all, of course we were in Ada Ohio, far away from the big city art
scenes. I looked at the Bruce Nauman Neon, it didn't upset me, evidently
I am not a prude. I have seen other neon that I liked much more. I showed
the 69ers to my wife who is an Ex Catholic Nun. She had no problems with
it. She is quite open minded and has a great sense of humor.
I was more interested in the neon messages on the wall. I could not read
the messages but even so the layout and colors were pleasing. The
rotating sculpture did not impress me at all.
In life I have much more problems with narrow minded intolerant people
trying to push their narrow views of the world on to the rest of us.
This goes for fundementalists and extremists of all ilks. Religious,
Political, moral etc.

The 16F88 has 4k of code space, and it is easy to use a serial EEPROM like
the MCP24C256. Then you would have oodles of room for hardcoded waypoints.

[neonixie-l] ceramic washers.

2013-01-31 Thread laingt
It should not be hard at all to make small ceramic washers. I would use a
slip casting method. I would start with a plaster of paris sheet poured
into a rectangular wood box. The top edges of the wood sides of the box
allow you to scrape the poured plaster of paris sheet to have a flat top
surface. Plaster of paris is easy to work when it is still damp. Then use
a counter bore or make a simple flat bottomed cutter similar to a wood
paddle drill. Make a whole lot of flat bottomed dimples (or maybe curved
bottom dimples if you want convex washers) Get some porcelain slip and
pour it on top of the plaster of paris slab. Squeegee the excess slip off.
Let the slip harden to leather hardness. Use a pin or small drill bit to
put the hole in the center of each disk of leather hard porcelain slip.
Let the slip keep drying. The slip will shrink and pull away from the
plaster. After a while you should be able to tip over the slab and have
all the washers fall out. A simple table top kiln would be used to fire
the porcelain. You could build one for well under $100 worth of parts.

of detectors, construction (from the perspective of buiding actual
counting tubes in the lab.) There is quite a bit about power supplies
amplifier circuits and other support circuits. This is a British book so
all the tubes shown are European numbers. Book is 238 pages long with a
lot of illustrations, hardbound. Quite an interesting book and worth
the approx $10.00 plus shipping.

[neonixie-l] Re: Cat Door Purchased: [TCA] [Fwd: Off topic Circuit for automatic cat door.]

2012-12-23 Thread laingt
Hi, I just wanted to give an update. I purchased the magnetic cat door as
the cat does not have a digital chip yet, he is still all analog! Although
he does have 20 digits. I have to say this quietly as Skink is sitting in
my lap, he will be visiting the vet on January 9th and will come home a
little lighter in the gonad department. I will get him chipped at the same
time, $25.00 more. In the long run I will probably get a microchip
operated door. I am not very worried at all about other cats with
magnetic collars in this area of town. We only seem to get the lowbrow
slumcats that have no collars. We mostly have businesses and old houses
divided into apartments. The typical landlord will not let a appartment
dweller cut holes for cat doors. My biggest worries are stray cats,
racoons, oppossums, and probably squirrels. Racoons I realy hate as they
have gotten into the big house and done a lot of damage. Well many thanks
for all the help with this issue. And happy holidays to everybody!

[neonixie-l] Cat Door Purchased: [TCA] [Fwd: Off topic Circuit for automatic cat door.]

2012-12-21 Thread laingt

Hello, well the cat problem has escalated. I opened the door this morning
and there was a unfamiliar tom on the stairs who had our cat backed up by
the window so he couldn't get to his accustomed cat bed. I caused some
consternation on the part of the 2 cats, finally after some growling the
tom bailed out the window which I promptly closed. This is the second time
that I have seen the tom on the stairs and some things on the landing got
broken.
One of the guys on Neonixie-l pointed out some cat doors that work with
a collar. Due to the situation with our cat and me having to spray
Fabreze on the landing for the smell. I went and ordered a cat door
that was pointed out to me on E-bay, it works with a special collar. So
till that comes we will have to work out something with the cat on
going in and out. Skink the cat is going to the vets for a neutering
on the 9th of January, I will get him chipped at the same time and then
I may look to upgrade the door. Chip operated doors run well over $100
though.
So I want to thank everybody for the ideas and the links to the door. I
havn't had a cat that we let inside for well over 10 years so I havn't
kept up on any of the doors etc for cats. All your ideas were a help
and I appreciate them very much.
  Happy holidays to everybody!

[neonixie-l] Passive Resonance Re: [TCA] [Fwd: Off topic Circuit for automatic cat door.]

2012-12-20 Thread laingt
Here is a link for a (old)patent on a vehicle in lane detector using
passive coils in the roadway. No circuit details but it sounds like what
Dan was talking about. 12 inch single turn coils in the road with a 100nF
cap in series. etc. The hard part of this project is figuring out what
the search description should be.

That is just about what I am thinking of. I just worry that the loud
speaker announcing please return to the store and the flashing lights
might scare the cat! Just kidding of course. Wire loop and a small cap for
the cat. Then the sweeping oscillator for the door. Now I need to find the
circuit diagram. The other simple way to do it would be to build a metal
detector and put a couple of nuts in each bowl of cat food! I think that
would work better with a dog though. Yes yes just kidding again. We were
up wrapping presents all last night so I could mail them today. It is
rought when you don't get the gift list for the grandchildren till 3 days

There are a lot of smart people on this group so I thought I would ask for
some help. We have a stray cat that we have adopted. He is an indoor
outdoor type of cat. My personal experience is if they started outdoors
they are very unhappy if you try to keep them in all the time. Well the
problem is there are some other strays that beat up on him and get at his
food. My temporary solution was to leave the window to our stair landing
open and Skink could jump up about 5 feet and get in through the window.
Then he could sleep on the landing if we were not home and eat as well.
Well we have two problems, 1) it is now pretty cold(The stairs lead to our
front door so that area is not heated.) 2) The big problem is I came in
tonight and the wild stray that has been going after Skink had him
cornered on the landing. Needless to say I wasn't too happy, the last
thing I need is a tom spraying on the landing! And no, I am not going to
shoot the other cat as I live in town and I don't shoot cats etc.
My idea was to make a automatic cat door that would open for only one
cat. I was thinking that if I made a cat collar out of light gauge
copper wire with male and female spade connectors this would form a
single turn shorted loop. (The wire would be light gauge so if he got
caught the wire would break.) The cat door would be a partly formed with
a square wood tube that the cat would enter with a solinoid latched door
at one end. On the outside of the wood cat tunnel I would wind some
turns of copper wire that would be tied into an oscillator circuit. The
shorted turn would either kill the oscillator or shift its frequency
allowing the door to open.
I can build just about anything electronic or mechanical and have lots
of parts on hand but I am not very skilled on scratch designed circuits
like this. Would somebody here be willing to help me with some pointers.
I can work from an hand drawn schematic. I should be able to supply
power from a wall wort if needed.

[neonixie-l] Business Trip to Paris Area

2012-04-30 Thread laingt
I am leaving in a few hours for a trip to the Paris area for a business
trip for equipment acceptance tests. I am one of the maintenance
mechanicss for this new equipment. I wanted to know if there are any good
places or areas to check out if I get a chance. Antique electronics,
Tubes, antiques etc. Old tubes from the 20s and 30s are particularly
interesting. Not to pricy and fairly small are the watch words. I should
have WiFi at the Hotel so I will have my internet and E-mail.

I copied a few of you guys that I have corresponded with by BCC so I don't
spread your E-mail addresses all over.
  Thanks Tim Laing

Hi Nick, I am glad you got the tube in good condition. PLEASE keep me in
mind if you make up something with an AVR I would love to have the tube I
have come to life. What do you think, a retro scope clock? I sold the
CK1414 I got with the rest of you because I found a RCA 1698 monoscope on
E-bay for $41.00 and I wanted to buy it. I have spent way too much on
tubes lately ARRGH..must stop..feel will power getting
weaker.ARRGH. you probably know the feeling. Well I need to get
to bed, work again tonight 12.25 hour shift. Tim L.

[neonixie-l] Selling NOS Raytheon CK1414F10C monoscope

2012-04-12 Thread laingt
Hi, I recently noted that there were some Raytheon CK1414F10C monoscopes
on E-bay that were going for buy it now $20.00 + $10.00 shipping. I bought
one for myself and 4 more for members of these groups that live in Europe
as the seller only shipped to the US. Well I find that I have one of
these tubes on the shelf all ready so I would like to sell this one. It
comes with the original box and a test document listing all the measured
voltages and currents for the specific tube. The foam packing turned to
dust so the tube will be bubble wrapped put in its box and then that box
will be boxed.
I am asking $27.50(I got a shipping discount from the original seller.)
plus the actual cost of shipping to the purchaser plus paypal fees if
you pay that way. These tubes don't come up very often.
The shipping to Europe was $17.88 first class international mail for the
other people just to give an idea of the cost.
So to repeat $27.50 + shipping to you + paypal fees if you pay that way.

[neonixie-l] AVO 8 Mark3 VOM parts needed.

2012-04-08 Thread laingt
I picked up a AVO Avometer 8 mark3 VOM on E-bay recently to go with an AVO
tubetester that I aquired a few years ago. Boy are these meters built
heavy. It probably weighs twice as much as my Simpson 260. Well these
meters are not very common over here (USA).I thought that one of the group
members in Europe might have a parts unit. I am looking for a few small
parts. One of the black binding posts, mine has the plastic insulating
cover broken off. I could also use 3 of the little screws that go around
the sides of the meter and hold the back of the case to the front of the
meter. I am guessing these may be some British size. The leather handle
is missing but I can live without that. If anybody has any of these parts
please contact me. Thanks Tim Laing

at the end of the day everybody makes clocks, DMMs and frequency counters!
After dark we fire up the huge teslacoils and look for any nixies that
were missed!

[neonixie-l] Raytheon CK1414F10C monoscopes on E-bay

2012-03-26 Thread laingt
The seller evidently had 20 of these tubes. After I bought one and made my
posting. (I thought it was a good idea to buy first!) The sales went on at
a good clip. Somebody must have a use for them as they bought 10! I ended
up buying a total of 5 as the seller would not sell to buyers outside the
US. So I was contacted by 3 people from this list and the TCA list and
asked to make purchases for them which I did. We will all have to wait a
while for the tubes to be shipped as the seller contacted me and told me
he was out of town on business.
It would be pretty nifty to build a CRT clock or Four or more letter
word using one of these tubes to produce the characters. It would have
to be a raster scan though from what I understand.

[neonixie-l] ABC, ancester of Binary Electronic Computers

2012-01-30 Thread laingt
I just finished reading the book "The Man Who Invented The Computer, The
Biography of John Atanosoff" By Jane Smiley. (I picked up the book on
E-bay for under 7 dollars) This is a very interesting book. (Though the
technical discussion on vacuum tube electronics leaves a lot to be
desired.)
J Atanosoff was a physics professor at Iowa State College who along with
a student assistant Clifford Berry produced an electronic Digital (Base
2) computer using a capacitor drum memory. It had 30 parallel
processors! It was very efficient as it only used 600 tubes and was the
size of an office desk. ABC stands for Atanosoff Berry Computer.
Atanosoff came up with the ideas for this in the late 30s. In fact the
ENIAC patents were invalidated in 1973 due to Atanosoff's prior work. I
remember reading a little about the ABC many years ago in I think,
Scientific American Magazine.
Look up John Gustafson and ABC on the Internet. John and others built a
working replica in the 1990s.
Also look up Konrad Zuse a German digital computer pioneer. His digital
computers were relay based he started in the mid 30s.
The book I cited above covers the inventors and builders of ABC, ENIAC,
Colossus, Z1 etc. It is a very interesting book.

[neonixie-l] Mechanical Timebase!

2012-01-22 Thread laingt
There is always a lot of discussion about various timebases for clocks on
this group. One I have never seen discussed is using a high quality watch
or clock movement. I have some real neat antique pocketwatches. I thought
it would be real neat to set up a pocket watch movement where you can see
all the works (It would have to be in a dust proof enclosure.)in
operation. I thought you could pick off the oscillations of the balance
wheel using a fiber optic through beam photoeye on one of the photoeyes
made for detecting tiny objects. I see these in my industrial maintenance
work from time to time. The watch could be set up with a electic winding
mechanism. With the photoeye output (Usually 9-24 volt sourcing or
sinking depending on the photoeye.) all you would need is some divider
circuits to produce your timebase signal for a clock. Nixie, numitron etc.
See WIkipedia Balance Wheel. A good 17-23 jewel watch movement sitting in
one position a constant temperature can be very accurate.

[neonixie-l] Synchronous Alternators and motors

2012-01-19 Thread laingt
Having worked at Lima Electric (Sadly No longer in Lima Ohio, Factory
Closed) for over 5 years making synchronous alternators, and 3 years in
the Engineering Test Lab I can pass on a little information on alternator
speeds. On a sychronous alternator the rotor operates with DC excitation,
either supplied by slip rings (automotive alternator) or by a excitor
rotot/stator combination.( There is also DC or AC excitation) Lima
electric pioneered alternators without sliprings, this was made possible
by solid state rectifiers.
A synchronous alternator will operate just as well as a motor if voltage
is supplied to the stator. In any case as a motor the rotor locks
exactly to the speed of the rotating magnetic field in the stator.
(unlike an induction motor where torque is produced by slip, synchronous
speed - actual speed of the motor. This can be looked up on the web)
This is what makes a synchronous motor valuable as a clock. Well in any
case in a sychronous motor shaft speed is directly proportional to input
frequency as long as the motor stays in step. (Excessive torque demands
can pull a motor out of synchronous speed) Conversly with a synchronous
alternator. Output frequency is directly proportional to rotor shaft
speed.
Rotors are most commonly made with two, four or six poles for 50 or 60
HZ units. A 2 pole alternator will produce 60 Hz when run at 3600 RPM a
4 pole alternator will produce 60 Hz when run at 1800 RPM and a 6
pole alternator will produce 60 Hz when run at exactly 1200 RPM. A
synchronous motor will run at exactly the same speeds at 60 Hz. 2
Pole=3600 4 Pole=1800 6 Pole=1200 etc. For 50 Hz 2Pole=3000RPM
4Pole=1500RPM and 6Pole= 1000RPM
The formula is RPMsync=120 times Hz divided by the number of poles on
the rotor
For power generation on a grid or any place that more than one
alternator are working together all the alternators must run at exactly
the same speed and must be in phase. If an alternator is not in "sync"
horrible things can happen. The phase voltage and frequency must exactly
match before an alternator is brought on line with the other
alternators. This is where a synchroscope using lamps or meters comes
into use. In our test lab I had two test stands, one with a 250HP
synchrounous motor and the other with a 500HP synchronous motor. The
500HP motor had to be manually synchronized with the incoming line
voltage before closing the main contactor. This involved using a
auxilliary motor to bring the large motor up to synchronous speed. I
then had to manually turn up the excitation voltage to the rotor using a
variac to match the incoming line voltage. A meter would indicate the
voltage phase between the motor (which was acting as a generator) and
the incoming line. The meter would slowly swing between 0volts and
480volts. When the meter read 0 volts I had to close the contactor. If I
was off a little the whole motor would ring like a bell as the rotor was
jerked into step. If I was way off the main fuses to the plant would
blow. (I never did that, thank God!) I did blow a set of 500 amp fuses
though once. In any case for the huge Megawatt alternators in power
plants for the grid it becomes obvious that Frequency control and phase
are very important for proper operation of the grid.
Sorry this got so long. I havn't posted in a long long time and I guess
the verbage just had to vent!
Tim

diskworld book. My favorites have been Small Gods, the Death books, Sam
Vimes (Nightwatch books), and particularly Wee Free Men. I realy enjoy
his writing and humor. I had to get a few of his books from Alibris
sellers in England as I couldn't find them here. I am currently reading
THe Science of Diskworld III Darwin's Watch. This is one of the books
I couldn't find over here. Maybe somebody needs to build a clock based
on the Clacks system.

More to the nixies Somebody has a Mil Surplus Sonar board with 50 DM160s
mounted on it Ebay 130585845241 Ends in 2 days. Not my auction. I just
purchased 50 DM160s recently on E-bay for 49.95+12 shipping. They arrived
well packed and are marked Philips. Seem to be real nice quality.

[neonixie-l] Clock readout based on changing resistance Ohmmeter

2011-04-09 Thread laingt
I know that some of the group have built clock circuits that would output
a changing frequency to interface with a Nixie frequency counter. I know
that there have been circuits that output current or voltage for analog
meters. What I was thinking of was a clock circuit where the output would
be a programmable resistance to be read on an ohmmeter. I know there are
digital programmable pot ICs. But will any of them output from say 10
ohms to 2400 ohms in 10 ohm steps? I know this could be done with reed
relays and discrete resistors set up in a decade circuit.
What I was thinking of is I have a couple of very old Wheatstone bridges
from the 1800s. You balance the bridge using either numbered rotary
decade switches that directly read out the unknown resistance or you use
shorting plugs that go into numbered holes to read out the resistance in
decades. The bridge is balanced when the galvanometer is nulled out to a
zero reading. This would make a unique interactive clock. It wouldn't
be very practical but cool. If the switches/plugs were set for a too
early or late time(resistance) the galvanometer would read unbalanced.
You balance the bridge to read the time. This could also be used on
direct reading Ohmmeters as well. I am not sure how much current flows
throug th bridge but the old galvanometers are not very sensitive.

[neonixie-l] Market for high efficiency high voltage power supplys TUBE RADIO

2011-04-08 Thread laingt
I can tell you where there would be a fairly big market for high
efficiency high voltage power supplies (IF THEY CAN BE PROPERLY SHIELDED
FOR RF LEAKAGE) that is B power supplies. The common voltages used in the
old battery radios for the plate supplies are 22.5, 45, 67.5, 90, 135, 180
volts DC. The very old radios using 201A triodes(Most Common) use 5 volts
for the filaments, this was usually supplied by a 6 volt storage battery
with the voltage dropped by a reostat. The early light socket B
eliminators would put out maybe a maximum of 60 miliamps. Most of the old
radios wouldn't draw that much. Later portable tube radios going all the
way to the late 50s would use either a 67.5 volt battery or a 90 volt
battery. The very popular Zenith Transocienanic short wave radios use a
90 volt battery and draw around 11-20 milliamps. The A battery filament
supply is 9 volts at 50-60 miliamps. Many of the very compact portable
tube radios would use 1.5 or 3 volts for the filament supply and 67.5 or
90volts for the B supply. It would be very handy to wire the supply with
a sense circuit that would detect when the filament supply was turned on.
I would think that mounting the switcher in a metal enclosure with input
and output leads properly bypassed would take care of the RF noise
problem. Ferrite beads, inductors, bypass capacitors. I just wanted to
throw this out.

[neonixie-l] Mystery Indicator? Tube,Ended Auction on E-bay

2011-04-08 Thread laingt
Does anybody know what this tube is?
This is an ended auction 170 623 013 824 take the spaces out to make the
12 digit E-bay number. Splitting into 3 digit sections makes it easier for
me to write down without errors. You will have to be logged in to look at
completed listings. I bid on it but didn't win.

[neonixie-l] Making Nixies

2011-03-01 Thread laingt
I worked in a Television CRT factory for several years in the sealing and
pumping, getterflash, highvoltage processing, ageing, final test and
matching. (I made some vacuume tubes of my own at work using parts of CRT
electron guns. I pumped them down flashed them and aged them. I have never
gotten to the point of trying to get them to light up) When the plant
closed I scrounged a lot of equipment. So I have the gear to set up a
good vacuum system and the knowledge of how to use it. I also have some
dead nixies that I could donate for parts. When I get some time WHEN!!! I
want to get a shop set up to try making and pumping down my own homemade
tubes and try some nixie type projects. My cousin had her own Neon shop
in Minneapolis MN. and I bought her neon plant. I did some glass blowing
years ago. I have a BFA in ceramics so I have been around kilns for
several years. So I want to put this all together one day. Who knows
when... So if the people looking at making nixies want to contact me
directly my E-mail is above. This project realy interests me. I am in NW
Ohio, Lima to be exact.

[neonixie-l] Making Nixies. Nixie Library Reference Books

These are the books in my Nixie Library. Some are pretty technical. More
technical than I am!

Cold Cathode DIscharge Tubes J.R. Acton, J.D. Swift 1963. Academic Press

a lot of theory and math.

Cold Cathode Glow Discharge Tubes Weston 1968 Iliffe Books Ltd London( No

learn a lot from this book.

[neonixie-l] Shameless plug NL5440As and NL841s on E-bay

2011-03-01 Thread laingt
I am making a shameless plug. I have some (QTY 12) NOS NL5440A smooth top
nixies on E-bay auction 280634472003 ends in about 15 hours. I also have
some (12) NL841's also on E-bay 280637054757, about 5 days 14 hours on
that auction. These are from Richardson Electronics the same source that
we did the bulk buy from a few years ago that I organized. I started the
prices out real low. I may put more up for bid and or offer some directly
to the group. I need to pay for some electronic goodies. (AVO Tube

[neonixie-l] 3rd try! Mullard Z700 U trigger tubes

2011-03-01 Thread laingt

If you have the book Electronic Counting Circuits by Dance, a lot of his
trigger tube counter circuits use Z700 U tubes. These are 4 lead trigger
tubes with the primer electrode for consistant firing even in darkness.
So if you want to build a trigger tube clock this may help. I have found
a source for these on E-bay his E-bay ID is supra_buyer. I have no
relationship with this seller. I purchased 6M-E5 miniature Eye tubes from
him in the past, the deal for the Z700 Us is my second transaction. I
purchased the Z-700U tubes in a buy it now sale E-bay # 280619094369. The
sale was for 10 tubes for $5.00 Plus the cost of shipping. I purchased a
fairly large quantity of Z700 U tubes from him directly. He said that he
has more of these tubes. I told him that I would let the group know about
them. If anybody is interested they can contact him directly about these
tubes. Again I have no relationship with this seller other than as a
buyer. From my transactions I would say he has been honest with me.

[neonixie-l] Pneumatic Cylinders For Industrial Clock Cases

2011-02-12 Thread laingt
Hi I did the posts about the Extruded Aluminum Air Cylinders that would
make good industrial futuristic clock cases. I sold the one to one of
the group members and he is real happy with it. I have 2 more complete
units and a Center extrusion only. I have 4 end caps 2 that are solid and
2 that have the hole for the piston rod. To make a symetrical case I
would put one togther with 2 solid endcaps and the other together with the
endcaps with the holes. (I also cut off 2 piston rod sections to put in
the holes if wanted. The case could be mounted on a support from the rods
and could pivot around its axis.) I would like to offer these to the group
first come first served. I would like to get $20 for each of the complete
cylinders with the end caps +postage cost. Shipping weight is about 5
pounds. (I would say too expensive to ship out of the US. The center
extrusion (finish has some nicks and scratches) only, you add covers would
be $5.00 + postage (2 pounds?) ID is 63mm 2.5 inches Stroke was 90mm but
center section measures about 5.5 inches say 5.25 inches interior space
between end caps when installed. If interested contact me off list.
Paypal accepted other options can be worked out.

[neonixie-l] My last word on the E-bay Otis Tube Listing

2011-02-05 Thread laingt

Some comments were made about private E-mails. Well go to his listing and
you will see that he posted my statement about using my listing under
questions. He then posted the reply that I got from him and posted here
as his answer. You can't get more public than that. Anybody reading his
listing all the way through will see it. And thats the word according to
judge Wapner! (old reality TV reference!) Nuf Said!

[neonixie-l] Weasel update: E-bay Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery??

2011-02-04 Thread laingt

Well here is the update, such as it is. I turned this into E-bay earlier
tonight. I also sent an message to the seller through the question link
on the sellers auction. I was not nasty, at least I thought. Here is
what I sent to him.

Dear loveourfoxbody,

It is against E-bay rules to copy other peoples listings without
permission. Your title is exactly the same as my listing down to the
Thyratron2 which I put in on an older listing where I had 2 of the tubes
up for auction at the same time. You also copied the picture I took of the
tube lit up. You copied verbatum including grammer errors the first 91
words in my listing. At least you could have asked! I have informed E-bay
as this is a violation of their rules. Getterflash

-getterflash

Here is his rather hurt and indignent response.

Dear getterflash,

Sorry I did not know that. If I did I would have asked. I guess it's in
ebays hands now. Since you knew you could have notified me first before
ebay I would have gladly changed the ad. If they cancel the ad I hope you
will be happy. I will then relist w/a different ad. Thats ok I've blocked
you as a bidder for the 50+ tubes I have to sell.
Thanks again
Billy

-loveourfoxbody

I think he probably does have the tubes and is on the up and up on that.
At least I will give him the benefit of the doubt. I guess since I am a
dirt bag for reporting him I won't get to buy his items :( So if he has
50 tubes as he states don't bid high as you will get other chances!!!

In my situation I have a few more tubes but I don't want to sell any more,
at least at this time. So sorry for the misunderstanding. I wonder if he
was one of the people that requested data sheets from me. More likely he
found some data on the web.

Again I would like to thank the people here that sent me additional data
sheets on top of what I all ready had.

I was curious about the differences between the 2040 and the 1C21. I don't
have a 1C21 so I would be happy to get one to play with. I know that
there is a clear conductive coating on the glass top. I don't know if it
is on the inside the outside or both sides. I would think that the 1C21
would not be touch sensitive, but it would be fun to try! If the coating
is on the outside and there are no other differences then it might be
possible to find some kind of conductive coating. The tin coating is
vacuum deposited and not something you can do easily.

[neonixie-l] E-bay Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery??

2011-02-03 Thread laingt
Well should I be flattered or pissed off, what do you think?

Over the years I have sold a few Otis Elevator Touch switch neon filled
2040 Thyratrons. The last one I sold was on Nov 28-2010.

Title of auction was: Nixie Era Otis Elevator Ne Touch Switch 2040
Thyratron2 Auction 280592584705 or easier to remember(but take out
the spaces when typing in on E-bay) 280 592 584 706.
Well I got a surprise yesterday! There is a listing for Nixie Era Otis
Elevator Ne Touch Switch 2040 Thyratron2 Auction 110 642 996 087
(remove the spaces when entering number.)
I had a 2 after thyratron in my title because I had listed 2 of these
tubes at one time and this was the second one listed. I forgot to remove
the 2 when relisting. The darkened picture of the lit up tube is a copy
of my picture right down to the light flare from the camera lens around
the tip of the tube.
For the listing description he used most of mine including the bold
underline and different colors! I am flatteed that he included my
grammatical mistakes as well! He will even send the 7 pages of data I
have? I have more now due to the generousity of my friends on this
list!!

Well in any case I think I am going to report this to E-bay. What do you
think. At the very least contact this seller and tell him the teacher
found out that his science report was copied from the encyclopedia.(boy I
dated myself there!) This reminds me of a story my dad told me (he was a
biology professor PhD) On of his friends had a paper turned in for a class
and when the professor read it, it was some of his own work copied
verbatum with the students name attached! GOTCH YA!

[neonixie-l] ETL Tube Handbook on E-bay England

2011-01-15 Thread laingt
First of all not my auction not related to seller other than I assume we
are both humans! It is a very interesting looking ELT tube handbook. One
of the pages shown is for cold cathode tubes. Probably a dekatron data
trove. 250754928152 about a day day and a half left. Shipping to US
pretty high.
