[newbie] new configured kernel
Hey! It is my first time I use mandrake-linux. I compiled a new configured kernel before with SUSE Linux without a problem. Now I have a problem ;-) what else...;-) After the new configuration of the kernel (I removed for example the modules I do not need) I compile it (also make modules and make modules_install and make zlilo) without a problem. Then I install lilo... without any problems... After this I restart my computer and the boot up stops at the message: module dependencies ... I restart the pc with the old "standard" kernel and I have the same problem. What did I wrong? THANX!! Bye... Helmut --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] GERMANY

I got the disk mounted, but now I can't execute the executable file I downloaded (pkunzip for linux) How do I do this?? Thanks! An .exe file? Are you SURE it's for Linux? .exe files are generally Windows executables, which will not run in Linux. Technically you COULD rename a Linux binary file with an .exe extension... but I've never seen a program distributed for Linux with that extension. Anyway, make sure the file is set to be executable (type 'chmod +x filename' if it isn't), and from the directory it's in type './entire-filename' (without the quotes of course) to try running it. If that doesn't work, that file is probably meant for DOS/Windows. And you shouldn't need pkunzip in Linux anyway. If you've installed Mandrake, you already have a program called unzip which deals with pkzipped files. And most files you download for Linux are in tar.gz format, which you use tar and gzip for. -Tom I thought the command was gunzip ??? Joe application/ms-tnef

Re: [newbie] Oh, yeah
Sounds like bzip2. Except that bzip2 uses symlinks, instead. I believe that "bunzip2" and "bzcat" are both _symlinks_ to "bzip2." Although, I imagine that if you're paranoid about deleting files, you might use hard links as a "backup." As was stated earlier, all regular files are hard links to the file data. When all hard links are gone ("rm"ed) then the data is inaccessable, and may be overwritten. Thus, you might have a backup folder full of hard links to all your important files. If, for some reason one of these gets deleted, you can re-link it, because the data is still there- hard linked from the backup folder. This way, you keep backups to guard against deletion (but not corruption!) of files without actually keeping a second copy of the file in question. -Matt On Mon, 26 Jul 1999, Richard Myers wrote: On Sun, 25 Jul 1999, Andy Goth wrote: Then what are hard links good for? Re: [newbie] blank screen on X
The sis 6326 is listed in the supported cards, so that should be OK if you select it. BUT: using 'generic multisync' is probably not a good Idea. You should try to find out what the exact capabilities of the monitor are in horizontal and vertical refresh rates and for max resolution. The manual is usualy a good place to look for, or else the manufacturer's website. Also, the sis 6326 support in Xfree is limited to 24bpp. Don't expect to get more, and, the higher the res you choose, the lower the color depht, this due to the limited amount of ram on the card. Try to boot in command line and mount the cd-rom, then using rpm -Uvh, install the xfree-16vga package and the xff86setup programme, both to be found in the /mandrake/rpms dir. Then, instead of running Xconfigurator, run XF86Setup. This will give you a graphical configuration screen with quite a lot more options than the basic Xconfigurator. I have tried to Ctrl+alt+ (+or-) which sometimes does not work. I always get a very dull and impossible to read black and white no color screen that you can barely see the icons on Kdesktop. My howto's don't seem to be there and I can't read them anyway. Sndconfig does not work either. I have the irq and all the numbers to both my video card(s) modem and sound card nothing works. I have no sound so therefor no modem so that means no internet other than win 95 can't download proggies for linux with win95 correct? I am totally lost. :-) ,Chris

This one has the blue/green KDE logo on it and only features the 2 options to use KDE and the failsafe - This kind of sucks and I'm out of ideas. [newbie] Network problems and dosemu help
I'm having some problems getting my laptop (running Mandrake 6.0) to be able to see my home network. Both of the home systems are using Linksys PCI 10bT ethernet adapters, my laptop is using a 3Com 10bT PCMCIA card (3CXE589ET). I know the card works, because I can boot into windows and play nicely with the NT network at work (using DHCP), though I can't get an IP address under linux. At home, using fixed IP addresses, the default install of both my server and my workstation allow them to ping each other nicely (.2 or less ping times), but my laptop gets a 'network is unreachable' error. I have my home network set up using the 10.x.x.x IP address set. The server is set as 10.0.0.2, the workstation is set as 10.0.0.3, and the laptop is set as 1.0.0.4 in the KDE Control Center, under Laptop:PCMCIA, It shows Card 0 as my modem, and Card 1 is empty (though the driver for the network card in slot 1 is being loaded). The card is being detected and handed the following resources by cardmanager: IRQ: 9 I/O: 0300-030f Any ideas? - Theo

[newbie] video card probs as well
Hi. I took suffer from the graphics card problem on install. I cannot run KDE as it says there is no X server. So I ran Xconfigurator and it comes to the video card list. If I look at my Windows configuration it has identified the card as: S3 Virage with 2 MB memory. So in Xconfigurator I put in S3 Virage (generic) and Xconfigurator bombs out. I don't have the error message handy but it's something like the file is not found - (S3_X86_SVGA? maybe). If I look in the area where Xconfigurator is located there are only 2 files starting with S3. So where are the drivers located for my card. In otherwords, Xconfigurator is looking in a particular directory but the file it's looking for is not there. Am I missing something obvious here? [newbie] Kppp start a program at connect
Two questions: 1) OK, how do I get kppp to start a program on connect? I told it the path to my klicq, but it won't start it. :/ Any ideas? 2) How do I put an fstab entry for my old QIC-80 floppy tape drive? It's the only backup method I have right now, and it hooked in yet, so I'm paranoid. Thanks!! -- Ty Mixon e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ:26147713

Why set us all up for a download that is twice as long as need be for messages that actually don't need any html features at all?

From: stephan schutter [EMAIL PROTECTED] Why? HTML is pretty much a standard... outlook, eudora, netskape mail... Sure, HTML is a standard--for web pages. Especially considering that this is a Linux list, not everybody uses an HTML-aware GUI mail client. Lots of people still use programs like pine, for example, which can't handle html.
[newbie] Cable modem info ?
Can someone point me to some info on getting a cable modem to work with Linux ? I'll be getting it installed in 2 days , but Adelphia does not install to Linux . So I must let them install to Win98 . I'll have to configure it to work in Mandrake myself . Thanks ! jsm
Re: [newbie] Would people please stop sending HTML mail to this list?
I for one , use outlook express . The default setup is HTML .Most people probably don't realize this is a problem for some folks . To change it to text ( in outlook express ) , go to TOOLS / OPTIONS/SEND . Click the bullet into plain text , then click apply , then ok .While you're there , do the same for your News Sending Format . - Original Message - From: Ty Mixon [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, July 26, 1999 6:06 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Would people please stop sending HTML mail to this list? [newbie] Problems with X and Mandrake screen
I've installed Mandrake 6.0 successfully on my Cyrix166 machine, and I've been running kde (though I've had the choice of gnome, etc.). However, after 3/4 days, kde begins to lock-up, causing me to have to reset the machine. After this reset, the Mandrake X screen is replaced by the kde screen (in which I can choose only kde and failsafe, and there is no 'shutdown' option on the screen. [I have not installed any software other than the rpm's on the CD. I have a 2gig HD, a Cirrus Logic 5654 video card, and a parellel Zip drive that I can't get detected.] Has anyone else had this problem?
[newbie] Loadlin-How to
Hey, Does anyone know of a good place on the web that tells how to config the boot with Loadlin? I have a machine (win98)that for some reason during the Mandrake install will not find the MBR. I have the Loadlin on a disk but need to go from there. Thanks! Robert Hanline

So, change your Email client to default to plain text. I did. I'm using Outlook Express right now... and it's set to default to plain text. HTML is bulkier as a lot of formatting tags and other extranious non-information bearing garbage. What's wrong with a plain text message. Although I know this is just more waste of bandwith, which btw we are fighting over right now, but I would like to point out that EVERY list I am on is fighting right now.. I have had over 300 emails today. Lets cut out the BS and get over it. I even am on a telephony list right now fighting over cats vs. dogs. Lets make this call, right now.. PLEASE ONLY USE TEXT EMAIL, BECAUSE SOME OF US USE TEXT ONLY READERS. (pine, etc) Please. You are not dumb if you use html, just careless. You are not "behind the times" if you use text based mailer, just considerate. Ok? Everyone please get along, if not everyone send me your box. -Bill - Original Message - From: James J. Re: [newbie] Oh, yeah
What if all the hard links are deleted but the original file remains? Or will it just disappear? Each file has at least one hard link. If you delete all the hard links, you just deleted the file. So, each file name is like a hard link to the data?

[newbie] Problem with PPP connection
I'm trying to help someone else get Mandrake to work, and she is having a problem with her PPP connection. Basically, her modem seems to work fine, and apparently she can connect fine to her ISP without any trouble. However, she cannot connect to anything else (or at least not receive any transmitted data from anything else). For example if she tries to retrieve a webpage with Netscape, she gets to the 'contacted host, waiting for reply' (or something like that) message and then gets nothing else. Results are similar with other programs (like telnet). Does anyone know what would cause this, and how to fix it? Note: During the install LILO failed to install in her MBR, and the boot disk creation failed also, so I have her using loadlin to boot Linux... but otherwise her installation seems fine. -Tom
[newbie] Re:HTML mail to this list?
I have used Outlook Express and like it very much, but I am running Mandrake Linux only at the moment. I am not sure about KFM browser, but Linux Netscape Mail does HTML fine. I like to have HTML turned on because some of my mail lists come that way and look much better. I have a rather basic system Pentium 133 and a 1.6 hard drive. I would think people with at least that much computing power could reasd html if they want to. If they don't want to, perhaps they czn just skip those messages. Art HTML is bulkier as a lot of formatting tags and other extranious non-information bearing garbage. What's wrong with a plain text message. Also, not everyone is equipped to handle html, I'm pretty sure Pine doesn't.
Re: [newbie] Oh, yeah
So, each file name is like a hard link to the data? Yes, precisely. I was about to make that statement earlier, but I then thought it wasn't tre since everything that has been said indicated that hard links point to a single file and when all hard links die the file does as well (and that kinda invalidated what I thought). It's a good thing this isn't the case! It's waaay too complicated and unwieldly. Imagine making a hard link and changing your mind about it... if this was true, I couldn't delete it! The truth is much better. Yeah, that is a good idea about deletion protection. If I want to make sure that some data cannot be deleted, I can keep a hard link.
[newbie] glibc segmentation fault problem?
Hi, I am having problems with a few programs coming in binary form, including acroread, matlab and dislin. Some of these programs are claimed to have been compiled in Red Hat Linux 6.0. When I run these programs I get segmentation faults. To get a hint on what's going on, I run them in the debugger and I get the following message: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x2ad3c291 in __getopt_clean_environment () from /lib/libc.so.6. From which I would assume that the problem originates from glibc. I am using the glibc-2.1.1-9mdk that came in the "Complete Linux Operating system 6.0" CD. Any help on this would be appreciated.
