The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either be caused by a

I am only currently able to use a boot disk to get the system up and

Your bios might have changed disk parameters, ie gone to LBA or auto
and detected the disk in a different manner. Or you changed some or
other file, check your old logs for disk geometry, and make sure linux
is still seeing the disk the same as beffore when booting with your

the problem.

Firstly Agreed :)

I am enjoying this wonderful new learning experience.ok
well I just like trouble :)

My triumph would be that I finally got everything working after just a few
hours (spread over two days) of work! Even my sound card is working
now...I'm
quite frankly afraid to install anything new just because I'm still basking
in
the after glow of making all this work when I've never used this stuff
before =)

I think someone a few messages back asked about the virtual desktop. This
was
my problem as wellI fought it for a while and finally figured out that
(at
least for me) it came from having the wrong monitor setting matched with
too
high a resolution selection(it seems to assume that since I selected
something
that my monitor "can't" handle that I must want a virtual desktop area).
Run
Xconfigurator, and make sure you choose the correct monitor (or custom
ranges)
and a desktop setting that fits within the chosen max
resolutionsrunning
XF86config (several times) never fixed this I'm not exactly sure why. Also
make sure your video card memory it set correctlythat may or may not
have
contributed to my problems...

Best of luck to you

A mirror is a download site which contains a copy of files at some other
site, so for example, the "Update" program asks you to select a 'mirror'
of the main mandrake download site so that you can choose a site that may
be closer (and therefore perhaps faster) to download from, as well as
allow many people to retreive the same file at once, all around the world.

Make sense?

That is extremely unnessary. Have you been on this list long? If you

Joseph, one of the definitions of insanity is:

Repeating the same actions and expecting
different results.

If sending remove to the list didn't get you
of the list, then sending 1000 removes to the
list won't get you off the list. Sheeesh, use
your brain.

Go to linux-mandrake.com, click on lists, you'll

Re: [newbie] Video Config in Linux *Help!*

1999-09-18 Thread Jeremy Kersenbrock

OK, now that I have installed the i740 xserver and rerun xf86config, what
good is it? My system is still loading the generic VGA dirver at 640x480.
I've managed to figure out how to comment out the annoying virtual desktop
settings in the config file, but I need to know how I can force the system
to load up the accellerated driver in something other than 640x480 screen
resolution and (hopefully) something a bit sharper looking than level 8
color depth. I've tried the ControlAlt+ and ControlAlt- thing mentioned
in the xfree86 FAQ, and nothing happens.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I use the one supplied on the Mandrake 6.0 Cd and it works fine.
There is a readme file in the same directory that tells you exactly how to
set this up, just make sure you use the instructions for redhat systems 5.0
and above, not the 4.0 instructions. Also note that the created XF86config
file will placed under /etc/ not /etc/X11.

[newbie] Trouble w/ NIC, modem.

1999-09-18 Thread Dan Brown

I'm installing Mandrake 6.0 on a Compaq Presario 4504, and I'm running
into two problems which are rather distressing. In short, it won't
communicate with the NIC or the modem. First the NIC problem. At
system boot, it says it's bringing up eth0, and it gives a green "OK"
indicating that this was completed successfully. Other services
(apache, samba, etc.) also start normally. However, when I run
ifconfig, the NIC isn't there. It's a PCI NE2000 clone based on a
Realtek chipset. /var/log/messages shows

Sep 17 12:39:54 ffj network: Bringing up interface eth0 succeeded
Sep 17 12:39:57 ffj kernel: eth0: PCI NE2000 found at 0xfca0, IRQ 0, \
00:60:67:4A:03:E5.

But, when I try running "ifup eth0", I get

SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable
SIOCADDRT: Network is down

I also tried it with a Linksys tulip-based card, with almost identical
results. I see that the kernel reports irq0, which I suspect may be a
problem, but I don't know what to do about it. Other than that, I don't
have a clue. What else should I check?

Second problem, the modem. It's an ISA, hardware modem with DIP
switches and jumpers to select resource settings, or it can also be
configured for PnP. First, I tried it PnP, since I didn't want to go
digging for the manual to find how to set the switches. pnpdump found
it just fine, so I edited isapnp.conf to select com3, io 3e8, irq 5, and
ran isapnp. It responded with a fatal error allocating 8 bytes of io at
that address. Per /proc/ioports, 3e8 was free, and /proc/interrupts
indicated that irq 5 was also free. Isapnp gave the same error with
every other selection I tried.

Thus foiled, I found the manual, and set the modem to com2, irq 3. The
system saw the com port when it booted, but it didn't work properly. I
could open minicom, but the modem took about 20 seconds to respond to
"AT." I tried setting the modem to com3, irq 5, again using the
switches, and had the same result. Normally, I've found that this comes
from an incorrect irq specification, but that wasn't the case here
(setserial reported correct information both times). I haven't yet
tried adding my external modem on the built-in com port. Any ideas on
this one?

Any help would be much appreciated.

want to do with it. You'll probably need to add --with-mysql,
as I think I remember your saying you wanted to use mysql. Here,
you really do need to RTFM, or be willing to try several times until
it works. */
make
make install

That's the gist of it. The same basic idea will work with most major
source packages any more--extract the package, usually in
/usr/local/src, run ./configure in the package's directory, and then run
make (to compile everything) and make install (to install it). However,
if there's a README file with the package, it'd be a good idea to read
it.

[newbie] Printing and KEdit or cat file | lpr

1999-09-18 Thread Murray Strome

I asked this question before, but did not receive an answer

When I print from KEdit, or if I do cat file | lpr

nothing prints right away, and there is nothing in the queue. If I then
print something else (even a blank page) from other applications (e.g.
Netscape, Star Office, WordPerfect), whatever I had tried to print
earlier gets printed, then the application document. What is wrong with
what I am trying to do with KEdit or lpr?

Thanks for your help.

Murray

[newbie] shutdown

1999-09-18 Thread JK

I am trying to get shutdown to send a warning message to other users... the command
should be something like
shutdown -k now mesg

But it just sends shutdown canceled.. on red hat system, that works and I never have
a problem... I tried it on 2 mandrake computers, and they both have the same results.
Any clue what I am doing wrong?

Thank you
JK

Re: [newbie] Video Config in Linux *Help!*

1999-09-18 Thread Guillermo Belli

You are still at 640x480 8bpp because you are probably using the vga16 server,
not the XBF_i740 server. To solve this, go to /usr/X11R6/bin and make a
symbolic link to the XBF_i740 file as follows:

cd /usr/X11R6/bin
ln -s XBF_i740 XF86_SVGA

Then run Xconfigurator and select unlisted card, select SVGA server, select the
proper settings for your monitor, and answer "don't probe" when it appears.
Then you'll be asked for the video ram, my Stealth II G460 has 8mb, you specify
what's right for your card. After that select "No clockchip", "skip" probe, and
finally select your desired resolution and color depth. It's recommended that
you select only the resolution you want to work with, and not the lower ones.
After that just say "ok" and you're done!

 Have Fun,

What is this "mo"? Why is it respawing, and how can I make it stop?
I couldn't find anything about it in the list archives.

 Any help appreciated,
 Thanks.
