Re: Cache size. Basically, the more the better. For an example, price up the
intel Xeon chips, you'll find a 256K cache Xeon is about a tenth of a 1Mb
Xeon. You will see a performance increase, but you may then hit other
bottlenecks, like your main memory speed, and the IDE interface to your hard
drives. Owning a PC is a very expensive business, it's difficult to upgrade
one item without upgrading another, and soon you're on a spiralling course
to an empty bank acocunt. Or piggybank, if thats your thing ;-)

Subject: [newbie] changing partition table

I've been following the thread about appropriate partitions under Linux,
and I'm still not sure what would be appropriate for my uses. I'm
running a P133, 48M RAM, 1.6G HD and I'm the primary user on the
system. My mom does wordproccessing, and my brother doesn't do much at
all. I'm getting a bigger HD around Xmas and some more memory. What
about the cache sixe? It's a 256k pipeline -burst, would I get any more
performance out of a 512? Oh yeah, about the partitions... Currently
I've got 2, one for swap at 50mb and the rest for / . How could I
change the partion table w/o going back through the install process?
What's the purpose of the /home partition? Please tell me there's some
way to change my partitions w/o reinstalling again.

Hey,

Probably been done but

Have a SIS 6326 on board AGP 8MB vid card.

Installed and used, happily, Mandrake 6.0.

Upgraded to the boxed, shrinkwrpaaed 6.1 Powerpack and X don't like it.

Tried it both ways eg fresh install and upgrade. The X section of the
installer comes back with the 'there's a problem with your X
configuration' stuff.

Left it there and ran 'Setup' from the shell as root and the same thing
occurs.

Running out of ideas, short of new vid card.

TIA

 Hello,

I'm trying to burn a mandrake CD-R with Nero using the iso image avaible

My problem is that the iso image isn't recognized by Nero and I fail to
configure it properly.

 Here's what Nero asks:

- Image Type : Data Mode1/Data Mode2/Audio/HFS

- Raw data (check box which needs to ben checked, I assume)

- Bloc size

- Image generic

- Image final info

- Indifferent/Exchanged (check boxes)

Help would be greatly appreciated! :)

fine with my 620). IIRC
you have to update to another version of X.

If your sound card is not PnP, you can look on the card to get the set-up by
looking at the jumpers. If it is PnP, the job's a little harder. You may have
to run (as root) "pnpdump /etc/isapnp.conf" (without the quotes from a shell
prompt). Then edit the resulting file to meet your needs (controle resource
conflicts etc.). Usually the suggested default settings in the users manual
will work ok (hopefully you have one). One thing to note - the /etc/isapnp.conf
file can be intimidating. Read the documentation for isapnptools prior to
trying my suggestion. Next you run "isapnp" (as root - no quotes). Then you
should be able to run sndconfig after a restart (not sure if the restart is
needed, but maybe to set up the card - isapnp will/should do that
automatically on start-up after the previous proceedure is performed).

I learned the hard way that the kernel supplied with MDK 6.1 is not the same
as the one that you can download from ftp.kernel.org. Apparently MDK 6.1
ships with kernel 2.2.13pre??. The final version of kernel 2.2.13 is found

tried to apply the "ide.2.2.13.1999.patch" patch to kernel 2.2.13pre??
that came with MDK 6.1.

In order to finally apply the patch, I had to remove the MDK 6.1
kernel-source and kernel-headers using RPM. I had to delete the
/usr/src/linux directory. I had to download the official kernel 2.2.13 from
ftp.kernel.org. I applied the "ide.2.2.13.1999.patch" patch. I then
had to fix some broken links. Finally, I recompiled the kernel to add
support for my "Promise Ultra66 IDE controller."

If any newbies are looking to patch the kernel, I hope your ride isn't
nearly as bumpy as mine. Mandrake "may" have released an update RPM that
patches the kernel source to look exactly like the kernel source that can be
downloaded from ftp.kernel.org.

Re: [newbie] MSIE when?

1999-11-24 Thread Doug Craig

Our best hope for IE on linux is Mainsoft's work as described in the article
on this
webpage: http://www.mainsoft.com/press/pr-linux.html

Here's an excerpt out of that page:
About MainWin
MainWin puts the Win32 on UNIX and supports a full range of the Win32 API.
This is possible because of the WISE agreement with Microsoft where Mainsoft
received and incorporated several million lines of original Windows NT
source code into MainWin. This ensures that applications developed with C
or C++ for Windows will run on UNIX as it does on Windows NT. For example,
some of the more compelling business applications re-hosted to UNIX with
MainWin include; Microsoft's Internet Explorer; Microsoft's Outlook;
Computer Associate's Unicenter and Alcatel's X-Vision Enterprise.

About Linux
International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates that Linux commercial
shipments will grow faster than the total shipments of all other client or
server OS systems through 2003. Linux is strongly differentiated from
virtually all other operating systems because it is "open source" software,
with the source code freely available to all users. Unlike proprietary
operating systems that restrict access to the source code, Linux benefits
from a worldwide community of highly experienced programmers and technically
savvy academics who have the access to enhance and improve the system.

About Mainsoft Corporation
Mainsoft automates re-hosting Windows NT applications on UNIX and soon Linux
platforms. Mainsoft, founded in 1991 is privately held with its corporate
headquarters in San Jose, California, provides worldwide support for its
product lines. Mainsoft maintains sales offices in Boston, Atlanta, Austin,
Washington D.C., and London.

=donning flame suit =

I personally have had a lot more problems with Netscape 4.7 than 4.6 and am
looking forward to a better linux browser.
Judging from the number of attempts to test IE running under wine (see their
website, I'm unsure of the URL right now)
there are a lot of linux users who would love to use a FREE copy of IE5 on
linux. I am one of them! And if
Konquerer or any other browser is to have any hope, they better have 128-bit
encryption before I use it.

not necessarily. another reason to use Linux is cause it is perceived as
superior -- not just cause it isn't MS. And as much as I dislike MS
business
practices and their products generally, IMHO IE is superior to the
  alternatives.

  --

Indeed Linux is a superior OS to what is available from micro$oft. That is
why
I changed os's. And I personaly do not endorse companys that follow the
type of business practices that micro$oft does. I don't like seeing any
company
monopolize the market place, that kills competition and just about
prevents
innovation. Intel doesn't have the market wrapped up like micro$oft and
they
have some stiff competition, and they aren't crying foul about it.
I believe what it comes down to is if you change to a better OS, then
support it
and the developers, support the new releases and help make them it better
so
they can be competitive, on the same level, because if we who use the
better
OS don't - who will? How will it ever get better?
Anyway, that's my thoughts, not bad for middle of the night I guess.

1999-11-24 Thread Kenny Lim

Hi, I just installed Mandrake 6.0 on my machine, when I tried to connect to this
machine from another using Telnet or FTP the client would just refuse to connect
through. I have checked both telnetd and ftpd are both setup properly in inet.
Can anybody help?

Thanks

[newbie] install bug?

1999-11-24 Thread touco

i am installing mandrake 6.5. all goes well until i specify monitor
resolution. at testing x configuration, i get the "do you see this
message" "yes or no" screen, but i just can't read the question. if i
enter yes anyway, when i reboot, my screens overlap, meaning kde, gnome
and such.
i've tried all possible resolutions and most of the time i get a white
line at the top of my screen. i know my res' settings are right. i just
don't get the go ahead.
my friend installed this same copy on his system and it worked fine.

i also used Xconfigurator manually, and that didn't help, with Control-
Alt-+ not solving anything.

Any suggestions?

The problem is that I can't configure either the modem or the sound system.
I tried using the kppp but it didn't work.
Does anybody know how to deal with that ?

I think that the problem is the video card, which is the model of your video
card? Perhaps need to download the correct Xserver for your card.

I recently bought a new machine with a card with the intel 740 chipset.
But when reinstalling Linux it doesn't support my card, is there a server
for my card to be found?
If so where?

And (i still have to learn) how do i install it??

Tanks in advance.

Greetz LEN

The newer version of XFree86 supposedly supports it.
It can be downloaded from www.xfree86.org .
FTP site is ftp.xfree86.org . They suggest using mirrors instead of
main site.

Am facing same problem on my computer at work.
I'm trying to set it up fully in Linux to prove that it is a viable
company alternative.
If other computers are this much trouble, it might not be.

I have so far downloaded the sources from
ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/current/ sources (?). Tonight, left docs
downloading.
Sure would like to find a nice RPM file - with good instructions on
installation, however.

[newbie] unsupported! try your luck!

1999-11-24 Thread Lovister LJ

Hi,
I was introduced to Linux-Mandrake 6.0 last June and I managed to install
it myself after spending almost 6 hours. This is because first
I didn't know that Mandrake doesn't support the newest brand of hardware out
there, especialy top brand video, audio and modems.
  My machine is a PII 400 Mhz,Asus 440BX slot1 MB,6.4 Gig hard disk,
Creative 3dfx Voodo card, Yahama XG, and a Motorola chip modem. All of this
combinations of hardware is unfortunately isn't supported by except for a
few.
After painstakingly combing the net, I finally found a beta version
driver for the graphic card and I also found a commercial driver(hence
$$)for the sound card. But my joy was short lived, as a few weeks after that
the hardware went kaput one by one.
Starting from my 32 Mb SDRAM, next the soundcard, and then finally my
graphic is a bit crazy now(fuzzy lines at 600*480 and at 1024*9800). This of
course will need about $300 to replace.
However, I cannot attribute the breakdown of the machine to Mandrake
wholly but somehow I feel that during the many hours of trying to
adjust(espcially the graphic, XF86setup) the system I couldn't remember just
how many times I rebooted the machine. And I couldn't set aside the probable
tear and wear of my machine.
So, that's why I am sharing this with you'all. I just want to warn
potential users of Mandrake(newbie) to be wary about the potential dangers
here. Lastly, does anybody know the exact hardware supported by Mandrake
6.1? If anybody know then feel free to mail me.

Benjamin,

The reduction in size is due to the fact that the HD itself must store
information about the partitions (MBR), and each partition stores information
about the data it stores (Partition Table). The names may not be correct, but
the idea is that this information requires space, so while hda may be a 4.3 Gig
HD, the available space after partitioning is 3.8 Gig., and for hdb the
capacity may be 3.2 Gig, but the available space is 2.9 Gig.

Hopefully I have answered your question,

It will depend on the kinds of jobs that you'll be running on the
machine. If you estimate that you'll go over 256M of virtual memory, go
for the extra swap space. Hard drive space is cheap.

[newbie] 900 MB too small partition?

1999-11-24 Thread drx

It can't be correct that the root partition has to be at least 1426
megabytes, can it? That's right -- one thousand four hundred and
twenty-six megabytes?

The reason I ask is that this is what I am told during installation.
I'll take it from the beginning:

I have an EIDE disk, 4.3 GB, onto which I would like to install
Mandrake. On the disk I have created three partitions, using fdisk which I
ran from a DOS floppy disk. The three partitions are 902 MB, 1953 MB, and
1200-something, respectively. I had intended to use the 902-megabyte
partition for Mandrake's root partition, and the 1953-megabyte partition
for the /home partition. On the final 1200-something partition I had
intended to install Solaris 7 for Intel machines.

When I came to the Disk Druid part of the installation, I finally
figured out that I had to delete these partitions and then add them again.
Once I had done this, they became "Linux Native" and I could allocate them
to the purposes I wanted. When the time came to choose which packages I
wanted to install, I chose "everything," in the belief that I would have
space enough for this. A little after this, installation failed however.
The error message I was given read like this:

"You don't appear to have enough disk space to install the packages
you've selected. You need more space on the following filesystems:

   mount point space needed
/ 524 M "

Since I already have 902 MB for the root filesystem, and Mandrake
wants an additional 524 MB, it seems that it wants at least 1426 MB. I was
asked if I wanted to go ahead and install anyway, but it seemed to me that
I something had to be wrong, and I tried the other options instead -- "try
again," and "menu." In the end I had to abort installation altogether and
try to do it again from the beginning, but it always fails at this same
point and for the same reason.

When I come to the Disk Druid part, everything looks OK:

requestedactual

  / hda1 902902
  /home hda61953 1953

Despite this, it seems that Mandrake must have changed its mind at the
last minute, and tried to use some other partition for the root
installation -- a partition too small for it to fit.

 How do I fix this?

You must have dosemu installed I think - not sure of that but I do. Then you
mount the desired partition (on the same machine in my case) with:

mount -t vfat /dev/hd#$ /FolderName

where # = HD letter as a-1, b-2 etc., $ = partition number as 1-first
partition, 2-second partition etc. and FolderName is the folder you wish to
mount the partition under. Then xfm will "see" the partition you have mounted.

Re: [newbie] 900 MB too small partition?

1999-11-24 Thread Brett Jones

Do you intend to run a news group or YP server? How about objective C
development? My point here is "You don't need to install everything".
Your not going to use most of it so don't waist the space. The error
message your getting is totally logical, and I don't see what your
unsure of. You want to put 1400 megs of stuff on a 900 meg partition.
The install program sees this and tells you about it. The avg. install
of an X workstation, with a web, dns, mail server setup (for fun and
games, not production), comes in around 500-600 megs. Go through the
install selecting each package. If your not sure what the package is hit
the f1 key for a description.

By the way good luck on the solaris install, and prepare for a very,
very, very long boot off the floppy. Oh and if you screw up during the
install, you'll need to start all over again with that great boot floppy
(no backup choice during the install).

Re: [newbie] unsupported! try your luck!

Check the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List).
One should always check this before changing operating systems. It's in most
new user Linux books and on some Linux web sites.

 Hi,
I was introduced to Linux-Mandrake 6.0 last June and I managed to install
it myself after spending almost 6 hours.

Hate to say it, but if you try to install "everything", you may need the 1 1/2
Gig. Try taking the time to select the individual packages you want to use
instead. This will take less space, and you will have a more secure system when
finished. After all, if you are not going to use the Apache web server, why
have it installed?

Just my 2 cents worth,

Re: [newbie] 900 MB too small partition?

1999-11-24 Thread Alan Shoemaker

drxthe initial installation puts virtually nothing in a /home
partition. So you're trying to do an "everything" install with just 900
megabytes of space allocated to store all of the compressed software on
a 600+ megabyte CD. The installation is reporting to you that it needs,
at a minimum, 524 bytes more allocated to the / partition to
successfully complete your "everything" installation. Why don't you
believe this? I recommend that you swap your allocations and give the /
partition the 1900 megabytes and the /home partition the 900 megabytes.
That will work and leave a little space for expansion in the /
partition.
