One little suggestion for you, don't try installing Mandrake 6.1 on your laptopthe network card is really difficult to get working (been working on it for the past 4 days). Now, to your question, have you made sure that in the setup menu you've got pcmcia services running? I found that the services run by default in Mandrake 7.02 are extremely limited. In 6.1 they run many more services. And I'm pretty sure you have to stop the service before ejecting the card. could be wrong though. [newbie] Recommend Serial Mouse instead of PS/2
Dear friends: I have been using Linux for the past year, Mandrake for the past 6 months, Netscape 4.7 since Mandake 7.0 came out. This may not be true for others, but it has certainly proved true for me: Changing from PS/2 to Serial mouse has made all the difference. While using PS/2 mouse with Netscape 4.7 on Mandrake 7.0, I experienced CONSTANT freeezes and lockups on Netscape (and other applications). By "constant" I would say every ten, fifteen to 30 minutes or so, both in Navigator and Messenger. I was getting very angry very fast and blamed it all on Netscape. I might add that I replaced my PS/2 mouse three times (Micro, Radio Shack, Microsoft compatible). None of that made a difference so long as I was using it as PS/2 mouse. Things got so bad that when writing letters, I would have to save my message as a draft every five minutes for fear of losing it. Well, at the recommendation of a friend (and with the approval and help of certain members of our list), I switched to a serial mouse (which in most cases means the same mouse, anyway, only with an adaptor attached). I put it on Com1 (ttyS0), while my U. S. Robotics modem sits on Com2 (ttyS1). The list gurus explained that this may put an end to the Plug and Play IRQ conflict that was causing the mouse (and with it the application) to lock up. Well, they were absolutely right. Right from the start, the trouble ended. Netscape has been on the straight and narrow since then. I know this may sound incredible, but since that time, about two months ago, I have not had a SINGLE lock-up or freeze or any nonsense, not even due to Java. I thought of letting you all know about this then, but I knew that only time and experience would really prove if this was indeed the case. Well, it's been over two months, I am on the Internet many hours a day, I use Netscape 4.7 all the time on the same Mandrake 7.0 and so far it has not crashed ONCE. So, if you are having a problem with your mouse (which would have global impact on XWindows), consider switching to a serial mouse. Hope I don't end up eating my words. It is very possible and likely you need to flash your bios to support the larger drive. I've got an old motherboard that had a 133 pent running with 3 15 gig IBM drives and a cyrix 300, but nono would have been possible without flashing the bios. Re: [newbie] Recommend Serial Mouse instead of PS/2
Benjamin.guess I've not been following this thread. I assume that you disabled the ps/2 mouse port in cmos when you made the change? The conflict must have been one concerning IRQ 12 which an enabled PS/2 port always takes. Did you know that quite a few folks have reported a problem with using a serial mouse on a system with a ps/2 port. It seems that DrakX senses (even a cmos disabled one) the ps/2 port and then the serial mouse is ignored and then the serial mouse can't be used during the installation. And now a plug for my favorite pointing device. My ps/2 Logitech Trackman Marble Plus has displayed absolutely none of the problems you describe with your three different ps/2 mice. Of course I don't have a pnp card in my machine battling with my ps/2 mouse controller for the sole use of IRQ 12. :-) Alan Benjamin Sher wrote: Dear friends: I have been using Linux for the past year, Mandrake for the past 6 months, Netscape 4.7 since Mandake 7.0 came out. [newbie] Need Russian TV URL, please!
Dear friends: Thanks to all the wonderful advice cocerning LInux and Vmware, I was able to set up a Win3.1 virtual machine in Vmware and install Windows Media Player 3.0. As I sadly explained yesterday, TV 6 of Moscow has chosen to broadcast their LIVE domestic Russian broadcasts on WMP instead of our beloved RealPlayer. Well, it is a big event for us Russian scholars, students, faculty and translators. Configuring my modem as /dev/ttyS1, I was able to immediately connect to the Internet via Netscape 3.04 on Win3.1/Vmware. WMP 3.0 is dated July, 1999 and is meant to carry audio AND video streaming for asf and asx files. My problem is being able to get the URL in question. For instance, I can usually first connect to a radio or video station on RealPlayer and look at the status bar and find the URl address (pnm://... ram) or whatever. That way, if I know the URL, I can always type it in the Open Location box and connect that way. For instance, to listen to Radio Free Europe Live in Russian (24 hours a day), all you need to know is their URL, which you can get by going to their home page and then clicking on Live Broadcast. Their URL is: http://www.svoboda.org/realaudio/ru_live.ram. There must be such an address for TV 6 Moscow ending with asf (or asx). TV 6 Moscow's home page is: http://www.tv6.ru/ May I ask one of your kind folks who have dual Linux/Windows boot and please, if you could, try to write down the URL for TV 6 of Moscow. Turn to their second page and you'll find "Live Broadcasting" at the top right of this page. Click on the TV6 icon and you should be able to connect to them with WMP on Win98. One very important question: what connection options do they offer: 28k, 56k, ISDN, broadband? Please let me know. This will give you the live broadcast URL. That's all I need. If WMP 3.0 for Win3.1 can connect, I will be delighted as can be and eternally grateful to you. If this experiment fails, I may have no choice but to consider Win98 on VMware for Linux. I don't like the idea one bit. That's why I am making this desperate attempt to do it on Win3.1. Thanks so very much, folks.
