Re: [newbie-it] Come partizionare l'HD senza perdere informazioni?

Certo!!!
Prova a cercare FIPS2.0. C'è in tutti i CD Mandrake.

formattato col comando DOS format a:/s). Poi ho fatto un defrag del
disco fisso, in modo da accumulare tutti i dati all'inizio dell'unità.

If that is the same as adding the append="mem=192mb" line to the lilo.conf
file then it wont work. My system will not boot at all if I do that.
Different Kernel panic errors each time I change the file. As for the
mismatched dimms; I have been using the same memory for a long time with
windows. Would this only be a problem with Linux? Any suggestions.

Linux will normally see 64M of ram; as yours sees only 16M I suspect
that you have mismatched dimms, either brand or speed or both. Try
changing the order of the dimms in the sockets maybe with the biggest
capacity dimm in slot 1 and see if linux sees more. In any case to use
more than 64M do the following...

Either go through drakconf on the desktop and then to linuxconf or type
linuxconf as superuser in a terminal, then click on boot mode, LILO
defaults, extra options, and at 'boot options' put 'mem=192M' without
the quotes. Click on 'accept', 'yes' to activate, and 'quit' till you
get out. If there are any errors and you are asked if you want to see
the log files, say no. You will have to reboot to activate the change.

If your built in video card uses shared ram, you will have to reduce the
192M by the shared amount.

Bill.

Re: [newbie] kppp wierdness]

2000-05-29 Thread Alan Shoemaker

AndrewI believe that I've heard of this happening when
someone's chosen one of the higher security levels. The
system senses a new user when the phone connection is made
(the ip address of ppp0 changes to whatever the isp assigned)
and therefore does not allow any of the normally accessable
programs to be launched. When the connection goes away, then
all becomes normal again. So I believe that possibly
re-setting the system security level might solve your
problem. Anyway, I hope this leads you in a positive
direction towards solving your problem.

That happens about 10 seconds after lilo into the boot process. The other

How did all of you solve this problem when you were
 a newbie? I have
hundreds of unknown to me programs on this
 Mandrake...I discover what
 they do by accident.

For this, a thing called book exists. When I started
 out with Linux
(Redhat 5.0), I got myself a book called 'The
 Official RedHat 5 Linux
guide'. A lot of things are explained in that,
 including RPM's. By the
way: RPM stands for Redhat Package Manager. Another
 mystery solved.

Is there a listing of programs and RPM's decoded
 into
something that will enable me to determine the
 purpose? or do I have
to search them out one by one, only to discover
 that the program is
not something I have a use for?

Run GnoRPM or Kpackage. You will find a nice
 tree-structure on the
left. Click around a bit and on the right you will
 see a description of
the purpose of the program. Including an uninstall
 button at your service,
so if you don't like the program you can whop it
 away then and there.

I just found one that calculates "molecular
 weights"..I am
sure it is an excellent program, but I am also sure
 there are many
here that I could get more use from., if I only
 knew about them?

 www.linuxberg.com
 www.linuxapps.com
 www.freshmeat.org
www.yahoo.com and search for "linux app" and "linux
 program"

To me it appears that program names and RPM
 listings are
cryptic, the name SAMBA does not explain
 muchelectric eyes? blue
 fish?...where is it explained?.

SAMBA is a general knowledge thing in the computer
 world, not specifically
Unix. It is a tool to hook up windowze and Unix
 machines.
Something about the program names to get used to,
 indeed. But again, on
the above URL's you can find them. Look them up and
 read more.
Originally Unix was a system that was only used by
 developers, and created
by developers. Fast, simple, short commands.

rm, cd, grep, nroff, which, vi, sed, su, those are
 some examples. I guess
it has become a tradition for Unix-minded people to
 stay away from the
Micro$oft naming conventions for programs a bit, to
 make a difference. To
that, these programs are not commercial. THey are
 written by people who
just have fun in writing programs and giving them
 away (that IS what they
do). So if I had fun in writing a program called
 Wobbly that does some
calculations, that is my prerogative. No business
 would probably get that,
but then, a company BUYS stuff (normally). Which
 company would take a
"Wobbly" program seriously? Bring it out as
 "Calcmaster 2000", and you can
 sell it.

Is this an OEM product or did you buy it retail. The reason I ask is
that
the only CD-RW drive listed at Panosonics Web is a PCMCIA drive. All their
other recordable drives are DVD-RAM. There is no listing at all for 7585
drive but they do list a 24 speed CR-585 CD-ROM drive. This could be why
neither Linux or Windows
recognizes it as a CD-RW because it is not.

DrakConf ROCKS I use it regularly.
 Lothar is

  It is so damn useful!

The SU filemanager and terminal programs are

  Apache rocks.

I have a suggestion for mandrake. Add a utility

I downloaded staroffice and the java stuff for it.
  I

Strangely I find SO to be a bit too windows like
 for

 vector

killustrator. The browser pretty much blows.

Opera. Its a test and it crashes a lot but I like
that browser and I am waiting for a strong version
 so
I can lose nutscrape. I'm even willing to pay for
 it

IMWheel? was it in the distro? I had to

Same with mozilla fonts. Why not include then in
 the

[newbie] Linux Installation (need advice)

2000-05-29 Thread Edison Gica

I have 2 hard disk, one dedicated to Windows and the other one, new. Have
not been partitioned nor formatted by either Windows or Linux. And, I plan
to install Linux on my new disk.

I have two queries regarding installation.

1)
I plan to disconnect my Windows disk and setup the new disk as 'Master' and
install Linux. I will use a 'boot disk' to load Linux and will not install
LILO.

Once I install and setup everything under Linux, I will reconnect my Windows
disk (as Master) and connect my Linux disk (as slave).

My question is this, since I installed Linux w/ the disk as 'Master' and now
that I have reconnected my Windows disk and set Linux disk to 'Slave' would
the 'boot disk' recognize that Linux is now the slave drive (since I
installed everything w/ the disk as 'Master')? Or, I should do some editing
in the 'boot disk'?

2)
I will setup the new disk as 'Slave' and when the section mount point and
partitioning comes in Linux installation, I dedicate the whole 2nd disk.
Thus, I will let Mandrake do the partitioning and formatting of the new 2nd
hard disk.

Again, I will only use 'boot disk' to boot to Linux and will say 'No' in
LILO option.

Question: In this procedure, should I presume that Linux will not do any
changes or save something in the Windows disk?

I will start installing once I get this clear.

Thanks for your help.

Either go through drakconf on the desktop and then to linuxconf or type

If your built in video card uses shared ram, you will have to reduce the

P.S. IMHO any newbie who downloads their first install of
Linux instead of buying a documented package is truly nuts,
and is asking for big problems, but this has nothing to do
with the particular disto or version as it applies to them
 all.

Heh, then I guess I'm certifiably nuts : ) I debated between gettting the
packaged version or just a plain CD, and I went with the plain CD. I just got
through by reading a whole whole lot (most of the manual is online, and I
bought a small Linux book along with the CD), and reinstalling a whole lot after
I'd screw up. But I did eventually get it right, and I've been running this same
"version" for about 5 months now. It was definitly a learning experiance, and
if I had to do it all over again, I'd probally still pick the CD since I've
probally learned a lot more than I would have if I stuck with the packaged
version.

RE: [newbie] Slow download speed

2000-05-29 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

You have a DNS server problem...

At the console type "cat /etc/resolv.conf"

You get back something like this...

[root@router ~]# cat /etc/resolv.conf
search mydomain.com
nameserver 208.193.112.3
nameserver 208.193.112.4

Ok see the FIRST "nameserver"... well it's not working.

What is happening is that your system is waiting for the first DNS server to
respond. I never does, so the computer waits a predetermined amount of time
before sending a request to the second server. The second server is working
just fine, which is why you eventually see the web page...

My mother-language is not english, so it is rather time-consuming for me
to read-trough all the mails in this list - and there are many, with the
result, that I am forced to run fast trough the mails, only reading the
subject - and if not of interest - delete. But - sometimes it happens
that I havent been on the net for a couple of days, resulting in more
than 100 mails waiting - I then often deletes to many, and thats is
anoying when you finds out that a number in the tread is missing.
I would suggest som main groups like 'networking' 'mailprograms'
'multimedia' 'the Mandrake 7.1 - issue'

for UDMA/66 controllers ass well... If you have a harddrive on a standrard
ide controller and one on your ata66 controller just like me
and that ata66 drive is at address 0xd800 (look
in your windows config) then type at installing ide2=0xd800 and it works
fine without special drivers

  Hi!

I have ony found a UDMA/66 Driver at
  promise.com for Linux RedHat.
But how to make Linux Mandrake 7.0
  recognizing my Ultra66 controller?
And why doesn't W98 need to recognize it even
  without any drivers?
The same at DOS. It needs
  nothing...
W2000 has the UDMA/66 Driver, Linux
  doesn't...
  WHY?

[newbie] Brahms again

This are the files in the bramhs directory:
acconfig.h
acinclude.m4
aclocal.m4
automoc
Brahms.spec
brahms.specific.m4
config.guess
config.h.bot

configure
configure.in
install-sh
ltconfig
ltmain.sh
Makefile.am
Makefile.dist
Makefile.in
missing

This three files include.
Makefile says:

# po

# not a GNU package. You can remove this line, if
# have all needed files, that a GNU package needs
AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS = foreign

# include spec - file
EXTRA_DIST = Brahms.spec automoc

Makefile.dist says:
default: all

dist:
@echo "This file is to make it easier for you to create all you need"
 aclocal
 autoheader
# use --include-deps, if you want to release the stuff. Don't use it for

 done
 rm -f Makefile.dist

all:

[newbie]KDE doesn't come up

2000-05-29 Thread ditty999

I am very very new to Linux..
I have installed Mandrake 7.0 on my computer, but I am not
able to see the KDE environment. Since I had given the option of graphical
login, my first login prompt is somewhat graphical, but not entirely so.
After logging in, I get a screen where there are 2 shell prompt windows on a blue
background and
nothing else. I can get GUI programs like Netscape running from here but the
windows cannot be resized, moved etc..
During the testing phase of configuring X during install, it did correctly
display the test screen so I'd assumed that X configuration went off well.

My video card is a 3dfx voodoo banshee card with 16 MB Video RAM. and my monitor is a
Philips 105s. Has anyone encountered similar problems with this card/monitor ?.

It would be great if anybody could help me with some suggestions.

Kindly forgive me if this looks like a silly post. But I guess I could start figuring
out things only when the whole thing is up and running..

As far as I have understood it (in very short/popular terms), the 'memory hole 15 - 16
mb' is
a successor to the 'ram-limit' at 640 kb. In the 'old' days, when the 86-family of
processors/computers were developed, they made space for the VGA-extension just above
the
limit at 640 kb, so when the computers got 'bigger' they reserved a new pice for the
SVGA.

I can install it on my IDE onboard controller hard drive, but then it won't

I want Linux to work just as it was thought to... And I wonder why there are

You are comparing apples to oranges. Win/dos is a completely different OS
as
compared to Linux so it's not fair to ask why something will work in one
and not
 the other.

You haven't given us much to work on here did you get Linux installed

did you get an error saying that it can't find your hard drive during

Help is available just let me know where your at.

2000-05-29 Thread Charles A Edwards

Edison
I have installed on a 2nd hd with Lilo and also without Lilo and booted
from a disk either way works.
When you install Mandrake it will make No changes to your Windows drive
unless you tell it to make them.
If you want to set your new drive as your only drive, install Linux then
reattach your Windows drive as master you can but it isn't necessary. Also
if you choose to install by this means you will need to start the Mandrake
install using a Windows Startup disk inorder to load drivers for your CD-Rom
and mouse.
As long as you have only one version of Linux installed on 1 hd,
wheather that drive is set to master or slave will not effect using your
Linux "boot disk".
I hope this clarifies the questions you had.

Subject: Linux on 2nd HD

 Hi Charles:

Just a query about ur installing the Linux on a 2nd hd. U said that u
selected the 2nd hd in the mount partition option under Recommended
 (right?) and used LILO.

My question is if I only use the boot disk to load to Linux and say no to
LILO installation then Linux won't do any changes whatsoever in my Windows
 drive?

WEll, at this point I don't want to disturb my Windows disk.

I was also thinking of disconneting my Windows disk and setup my 2nd HD
(it's new have not been partitioned nor formatted by either Windows or
LInux) as a 'Master' drive and install Linux, etc. Then reconnect my
Windows drie and setup the Linux drive as a 'slave'.

However I am not sure if the 'boot disk' that was created would recognize
the Linux drive since it is now setup as a 'slave' drive and during the
installation it was setup as a "master' drive?

 What do you think?

Well, as long as Linux will not touch my Windows drive when I select the
2nd HD mount point then I would proceed to do so. Linux not touching my
windows drive is under the condition that I will not install LILO but will
use 'boot disk ' to boot to Linux.

By the way, how can u stop or terminate the installation in the process?
Just turn off the computer's power? Won't it corrupt the disk?

Thanks and hope to hear from u soon.

 regards,
 edison
