If it was a tar you have to be in the directory that it installed to to call the file. In other words something like cd /usr/local/Applixware 4.4.2 should put you in the directory and then on the command line you could put the ' ax-demo' and it should run. Dear All, I just downloaded the Applixware 4.4.2 demo and I cannot figure out how to install. There were no directions from the webpage and the readme txt. just says run the 'ax-demo' script or something close to that. I tried this and just got a no such command error message. Has anyone installed this? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Marcia
Re: [newbie] Installing VMware
you know, I finally got vmware to work when I logged in as a normal user, I was logged in as root before. And it is all fine and dandy when I am logged in as me, except, I can't have it use a partition, I can only choose a virtual disk. This is not my desired effect at all, I want to boot into my exisiting windoze from inside of linux. ultimately I want to be able to watch my TV Tuner card, and to use MS Access 2k. When I try to use an exisitng partition, it says i don't have access to any. I put my name in the root group, and I made sure that the /dev folder included read and write access to the root group. I put myself in the disk group as well, as, upon further investigation, I realized that the hda file has permission group setup for disk group. Anyway, none of tha works, but I can't get the license to register when I am logged in as root. Any more idea's? Also, what would happen if you modify the liscense file to have a later expiration date? Seems rather easy to extend the free trial if all it takes is to change the date. [newbie] HP 9350i Locks up computer, slow boot up/down
I just install a HP 9350i (used to have a Memorex 1622) and it has totally messed up my 7.2. During the boot, it hangs for about 5 minutes during the mnt drives section (with or without a cd in it). When I access the file tools in the mnt directory after it finally starts it locks that program up and I have to Xkill it. If I turn the drive off in the bios (ide secondary) everything works fine. I have gone into config and told it not to mnt the drive at bootup, but it still hangs up if the ide secondary is turned on. I have completely formatted the drives and reinstall 7.2 (install goes fine). It also will not shut down properly with the drive on. For whatever reason, I installed Corel Linux and it works fine with the drive, but I prefer Mandrake's. Any ideas, suggestions, etc? Thanks in advance, Donald Wright P.S. [newbie] Xfce screensaver -- defective?
Dear friends: Just spent a little time exploring XFCE's xscreensaver. I looked through the online documentation, tried out many of the screensavers and tried out some of the options. Xscreensaver certainly works in the sense that if you set it for such and such a time, it will come on at that time (e.g. after 5 minutes of inactivity). The problem seems to be that some of the screensavers, as someone else noted, do not work. Since xscreensaver runs its many screensavers at random, sooner or later you will get to one of the defective or non-existing screensavers. When you try the demos out, you will come across one of these non-existent screensavers with an error message from Xscreensaver. The documentation says that you can set Xscreensaver to stick to just one demo if you set the Cycle Timeout to zero (Screensaver Options tab). I tried to select a screensaver, enable it (which was already checked) and then set the Saver Timeout to 1 minutes. Xscreensaver came on all right but not with my screensaver but with its own random selection. I also checked my ~/.xscreensaver file. I didn't see any option there to set a specific screensaver. Has anyone had success with this or is Xscreensaver really defective? Thanks so much. Benjamin -- Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You might have done this, and I may be misinterpreting your email, but I'll send this out anyway: the license file needs to be place in the .vmware (not the fullstop at the start) directory that exists in the home directory of the user that will be using vmware. eg, user jbloggs wants to run vmware, copy the license file to /home/jbloggs/.vmware/license.file this is how I've set up the license on my PC at home, and works just fine for vmware2.0.3 hope this helps Dave >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/21 3:01 pm >>> Hello again everyone. Re: [newbie] Installing VMware
My license installation was tricky, too. One figures that it would be easy to simply put a file of a certain name in the correct folder and have it work. Not. I ended up getting it to work -- FINALLY. One thing to try is to name the text file "license2.0" (without the quotes, of course) instead of just "license". I found that fact buried somewhere but it ended up helping me. Actually I tried so many different ways that I'm not sure if that alone is what ended up making it work, but it's a step in the right direction. Regardless, the fact that mine works fine should inspire you to keep trying because it is SWEET when it finally works. On Tuesday 20 March 2001 08:01 pm, Joe Redd wrote: > Hello again everyone. Barb, You may have a Winmodem. Does Windows call it a HCF modem? You can go to http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20010302a.html and look for your model no. You'll also see the hardware modems there, internal & external. CR Barb wrote: > > > I do have a 3Com/USR modem, but two problems. When I try to use ttyS2, I'm > told the modem is busy. [newbie] glibc upgrading
How can I upgrade my glibc libraries? I downloaded some newer Mandrake versions in rpm form, but trying to rpm -U gets me a huge list of programs that need glibc. So, I was wondering: 1. How do I upgrade? I get teh safe problem if I rpm -U or rpm -F the new one or rpm -e the old one. 2. Do I need to use an rpm at all, or can I use a tarball? 3. If I use a src.rpm, how do I install it? Never used one of these. 4. Do I need to use the Mandrake rpm's, or can I safely use any glibc's? Thanks! -Paul R _ Do You Yahoo!? RE: [newbie] Using com5?
Barb Not to quarrel with the SuSE instructions but try these instead. Log in as root and from terminal enter the following command # cat /proc/pci This will list all your PCI devices. On this list you should see either Communication controller or Communication device, That listing is your modem. Write down the first I/O range. In the example I am using 0xd800 replace that with yours. Enter the following: # setserial /dev/ttyS3 port 0xd800 spd_vhi skip_test auto_irq autoconfig If there are no errors, then enter: # setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A Select /dev/ttyS3 as the device in kppp and see if your modem will now initalize and operate. If it does to make this perm. you will need to edit your rc.local file which is located in the /etc/rc.d directory. Add the 2 setserial lines to the end of this file Save the changes and reboot your system. Re: [newbie] System Commander 2000 and partitioning
I have three partitions on my system, created with fdisk. There is a primary DOS partition (the C drive), and a secondary DOS partition, which is further divided into two logical partitions (D and E drives). I also left myself some space to install Linux, which got its own partition. This was all on a single disk drive. I'm not sure if you are using two physical drives, based on your mention of "slave" below. There is no reason why Partition Commander could not do all these things, if fdisk can do them. You shouldn't need to make this registry change; however if you don't, then you need to ensure that the following line is in the global section of /etc/smb.conf encrypt passwords = yes I can't speak for Win9x, but NT used encrpyted passwords over the network from SP3 onwards, and so does Win2000. From: juan jose Ubierna Mahave To: Linux Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2001 2:09 AM Subject: [newbie] New I recent finish install mandrake 7.1 , I´m so new in Linux. 1.-, I have problems with my keyboard USB (Microsoft internet Keyboard Pro), --Too Many NAKs , 2.- I have problems with ADAPTEC AIC-7890AB/AIC38600 USCSI 2 integrated in motherboard Iwill BD-100 with 1 processor PII 350MHZ. 3.- I had configure Apache, Networking , I would like with Java is soported in this ambient 4.- I would like update version mandrake 7.1 to 7.2 what is the most easy way to make this. 5.- Have Xwindows rpm utility. You need to make a simple registry change. Do a search for samba.reg. After you install the .reg file you need to reboot. Re: [newbie] XFCE -- the little engine that could!
Ben, Would you like for me to host the list on my system on a trial basis to see how things will go with it? I've got Majordomo setup and working on my Linux machine here at home. Only trouble is that I don't have a 24/7 connection so theres going to be a little down time. For instance, between the hours of 11:00pm and 6:00. I suppose I could work on setting up a script that would hangup and then redial my ISP at scheduled intervals...that would be an intersting little project. I installed and setup Majordomo so I could start a small mailing list for my class mates in Accounting class at the college I attend and its worked great as a study aid. Lets us all keep in touch and everyone is on the same page. Subscription is easy and painless as it unsubscription. If you wanna give this a try you can send a subscibe request to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> with subscribe xfce-new in the body of the message. Let me know... [newbie] Problem with installing. Help please.
Hello, I am trying to install Mandrake 7.2 on my PC. My installation gets stuck at Initializing CDROM, in second stage install. I was having sort of a similar problem with Redhat 7.0 but I resolved that by typing linux nousb at boot: I tried the same thing with Mandrake but it does not get me anywhere. I'm relatively new to Linux and that's why I really want to try Mandrake but I'm not beeing able get past this installation problem. If anyone could help I would appreciate it. Please write me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with any kind of hints you can give me. Also does anyone know where I can find a list of all linux kernel parameters that I can try at boot time? While you're at it, check out xsmbrowser and LinNeighborhood. RE: [newbie] Hard drive not found?
>Hi >I'm trying to install 7.2 on an AMD Thunderbird with an ASUS A7V mother board. I have a hard drive where 20 out of 30Gb are used for Windows, which is working just fine. I have saved the remaining unpartitioned 10Gb for Linux. When I try to install 7.2 however, I get the following message when I reach the point in the installation program where I'm supposed to partition the hard drive and set up the filesystem: "An error has occured - no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems. Please check your hardware for the couse of this problem". And then I can't do anything else than just exit the install. I've tried to boot directly from the CD, from a boot disk, I've tried to run text mode install and in expert mode, but nothing works. Please send in plain text rather than HTML. The problem you are having is caused by the fact that the installation does not recognize the onboard Promise ATA100 controller and therefore can not see your hds. Here is what will work on most systems, At the installation splash screen press F1 and at the boot prompt (it will be at the bottom of the screen) enter the following: lspci -vv | less use the space bar to scroll down until you find your Promise controller. You will see 5 heximal number strings showing the I/Os for the controller, write down the first 4 sets (call them a,b,c,and d). Reboot your system. At the installation splash screen press F1 and at the boot prompt enter: linux ide2=0x8400, 0x8002 ide3=0x7800, 0x74002 These are from my system you will need to enter yours. The formula to use is ide2=a, (b+2) ide3=c (d+2). If there are no other problems the installation should then run. Charles Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.

Re: [newbie] Hard drive not found?
Someone may be able to answer this better than me, but I believe that linux must start in the first 4000 blocks, or maybe it's the first 4 gigs of a hard drive in order to boot. I ran into this problem myself when I tried to get win98 and slackware to share a large hard drive. [newbie] mac terminal
Hi, I was playing with my computer and thought, why not add my 12 year old mac to my network so that we have a machine for email, ice, etc. So I got the cables needed and connected the two computers, So far everything is working ok. If I run zterm in the mac and minicom in the linux machine, what I type in either computer appears on both screens. I am not sure how to do the next step wich is to make the computer running LM7,2 the server. I tried reading the mac terminal mini-howto, but that left me more confused. Are there any suggestions?
