L'ifconfig liscio è talmente liscio che di eth0 nemmeno a pagarla. Naturalmente con lsmod nessun modulo 8139 risulta caricato e quindi ifconfig eth0 come output mi manda quasi a quel paese. Bene, proseguiamo. Posso risolvere in qualche altro modo? E, principalmente, ho capito bene quale è la situazione della mia macchina oppure sto prendendo fischi per fiaschi? Grazie -- syd

[newbie] printing to tcp/ip port
Hello everybody, I would like to install my HP 970 cxi printer in Mandrake but I want to assign it to a tcp/ip port. My printer is not attached to the Mandrake box but to a freesco box acting as a printer server. In windows this is fairly simple. I just install the printer as if it was attached to my PC (ingnoring messages the device is not found). Then I change the assigned lpt1 port to the TCP/IP port ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). This port is created with the installment of an AXIS driver. It works great in Windows and I would like to do the same in Mandrake. But I have no idea how, and didn't find any clues on the web yet. [newbie] Starting Apache + PHP
I'm not even sure how to ask this: that's how abysmal my knowledge of servers. I would like to learn scripting in PHP, and I need to run an Apache server to test the code. I've installed (in LM 8.0) all the appropriate Apache programs and modules, and all the PHP related stuff. In the LinuxConf - Service Control, I notice that apache is not listed, and both httpd and webmin are running. What do I have to do to get a working server so that I can test any code that I write in html/php? (Can I use my only computer as a stand-alone server, and access it as a client? I assume that I should be able to do something like that especially since freeciv sets up server/client on my machine.) If someone could point me in the right direction, it would save me wading through tons of documentation that assumes I have Apache up-and-running! Help? [newbie] CD burning setup
I'm trying to set up GCombust, but I seem to have a problem with permissions: GCombust, copying from my DVD (/dev/hdd), gives Could not read number of tracks from audio CD (but I don't think it's even trying). 'Dump CD' in GCombust gives while opening /dev/hdd :Permission denied I've set up my DVD drive (slave on second IDE interface) in Gnome Toaster, but it doesn't list any tracks. I may have done these while fiddling: # chown root.root /usr/bin/cdrecord # chmod 4111 /usr/bin/cdrecord and I've added myself to the cdrom and cdwriter groups. ...I also changed 'mount' to 'nomount' for hdd in /etc/lilo.conf, after seeing something in the list archive, but when I couldn't see a difference I changed it back. An article on MandrakeUser talks about /dev/cdrom - I don't have this. If I need one, do I make it or should it happen as as result of some other step? If someone could point me in the right direction, it would save me wading through tons of documentation that assumes I have Apache up-and-running! Help? Andre, I'm a newbie too, but I think this is one question I can answer! If you have httpd running, then Apache is running. By default it installs the web documents in the directory /var/www/html. There is also /var/www/cgi-bin where all the scripts can go. You can access your web stuff by typing http://localhost in your browser. If you know your IP address, you can type that in as well. You should get a page telling about the version of Apache that you are running. That's just to let you know that the server is running. To avoid having to be root to add/change to your web directory, you have to add yourself to the group Apache. This can be done using UserDrake. Then, you should give the group write access to /var/www. Do this by typing chmod g+w /var/www. That gives the group write permissions to the directory. You may have to log out and back in for that to take effect, I'm not sure. Then you should be able to edit and write new stuff in your /var/www/html directory. If your users want to have web pages, they have to create a directory in their home directory called public_html. That's where they put all their web stuff. Then the user has to issue the command chmod 755 ~USERNAME. Then the user's directory can be reached by http://yourip/~username;. HTH, Todd Thanks Todd, That ot me up-and-running! I also understand what httpd is now (I never noticed the comments on the bottom of LinuxConf screen when I checked httpd!) I still can't load any php test scripts, even though the modules are loaded in httpd.conf. I wonder whether the test script needs to be written in php.4 (it's php.3) -- even though I loaded the older modules as well in httpd.conf. Obviously, I think you can tell I don't know what I'm doing here! I think I'll have to do some reading as Michael suggested . . . sigh! One last thing, what effect will chmod g+w /var/www have on Bastille? It doesn't seem to like that command too much. I'm a littel leary about changing pemissions to programs and files that I don't know too much about. Regard, Andre Please pray the Holy Rosary to end the holocaust of abortion. [newbie] Starting/Using PHP in Apache
After the kind (and quick!) help from the list, I discovered that Apache was already running on my system. However, it refuses to load PHP. This is despite what I see at the top of the Welcome screen for Apache (aka httpd): Running version Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.19 (Linux-Mandrake/3mdk) mod_perl/1.25 PHP/4.04pl1 Two php test scripts do not work. Httpd -l gives me command not found in bash (either as root or user). I've read most of the on-line tutorials, but they assume that I'm using a tarball and make. These HOW-TO files for PHP assume that I'll be d/l, compiling, and installing the various packages. They give voluminous instructions on a setup different from my LM 8.0 rpm installation. (Httpd which runs Apache is installed in /etc/httpd.) There are no hints what do to with a rpm installation that doesn't work. My httpd and php.conf look OK -- they appear to have all the required modules. But I still can't access PHP since the commands httpsdctl start ...stop don't work. Nor can I find any reference to what they say (in a How-To section called PHP installation *NIX) is php.ini. (That suffix sounds like a Windows file to me do). The bottom line is I don't know what is wrong with my setup, since most commands to sleuth out the problem do not work. Perhaps some kind PHP/HTTP guru could point out where I'm going wrong or what I'm missing. Tia, Andre -- Please pray the Holy Rosary to end the holocaust of abortion. [newbie] Benefits of using XFS...
Hi folks!!! Due to a not recoverable error I had to re-install LM 8.1 I was doing a very long reading in a lot of docs about differents Journalled FS and I'm wondering which would be the best to use on a workstation in a Seagate IDE drive of 20 gb aprox. However, In accord with the conclusions I have through my readings I think that the best one for either workstations or servers is XFS. I wanna hear your experiences with XFS or your thoughts about using it. Thanks in advance Nicolás Gómez Montevideo, Uruguay Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] CD burning setup
I've done mostly as suggested. As mentioned in my original post, 'ls -l /dev/cdrom' gave 'No such file or directory', so I did this: # ln /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom # ln /dev/hdd /dev/cdrom2 Edited /etc/modules and /etc/rc.d/rc.local. /etc/lilo.conf already had 'append= hdc=ide-scsi devfs=mount so I left it. Now, running GCombust as root, when I do 'check scsi settings' I get 'cdrecord failed to recognise selected drive (wrong scsi settings or no permission to device)!' How can root not have rights to a device? How can I get such a range of errors? (I left out all the problems I have had logging in this evening, kde complaining about failing to set up interprocess communication, dcop server not running, mouse services and named failing on closedown, etc.). Help! Richard LPH, Saturday 26 January 2002 18:18: Hello, I'm assuming that you have not set up the drive correctly because the permissions error is shown for almost everything. I'm sorry if that is the wrong assumption. Also, many Linux burning software programs require the root (GASP). So, my suggestion is to test your software under root and see if it works there. If yes, then set permissions for the users and try there. If it doesn't work under root then follow the steps below. * NOTE I found these steps on the MandrakeUser.org site and combined it with some other messages from other people. Plus I added my own experiences. These steps might help you pick through your files to make sure that the drive is set up correctly. The girls of TuxReports are writing a much easier to read HOWTO that will be on the site soon. For now, you'll have to live with my notes (sorry) __ A Mini-HOWTO __ 1. Find out which is the real device name for your burner. Type ls -l /dev/cdrom Usually it will be /dev/hdc (second channel, first device) If you have 2 cdroms with the burner as slave on the secondary channel it is usually /dev/hdd. 2. As root, edit the /etc/modules.conf file and add this line: alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi 3. As root, edit /etc/lilo.conf add the line append=hdc-ide-scsi (or if hdd then append=hdd-ide-scsi) to the section starting with image={} 4. Then type lilo at the console. 5. Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local and put the line modprobe ide-scsi into it. 6. REBOOT 7. This should do it. Even though I follow the above steps, my scsi emulation still didn't work. Therefore, after editing the files I ended up using drakconf and having Mandrake set up LILO there because step 4 added a bunch of garbage into my lilo.conf. Now to test the installation: Place a CD into the burner and mount it as root. mount /dev/scd0 -t auto /mnt/cd Your IDE drive should be handled like a SCSI CD-RW. Plus you should be able to use a burner program. BTW: All of the editing must be done as root. If you do not feel comfortable with vi or vim, then use Kate. I tried this sequence last night...while in a terminal window Kate /etc/lilo.conf ... which brings up in the file in the Kate window. Hope this helps and good luck! 'Dump CD' in GCombust gives while opening /dev/hdd :Permission denied I've set up my DVD drive (slave on second IDE interface) in Gnome Toaster, but it doesn't list any tracks. I may have done these while fiddling: # chown root.root /usr/bin/cdrecord # chmod 4111 /usr/bin/cdrecord and I've added myself to the cdrom and cdwriter groups. ...I also changed 'mount' to 'nomount' for hdd in /etc/lilo.conf, after seeing something in the list archive, but when I couldn't see a difference I changed it back. hello, i was just wondering if anyone could help me with this problem. i been using mandrake for a few years now, without a probem. (started w/ 7.1 , now just got 8.1) i never had problems dual booting with win98 or win 2K. but now i'm havin a big problem. the laptop i'm trying to put it on is a Toshiba Satellite, 5005-s504. it has a PIII 1.1Ghz, 30GB, 512 SDRAM. the probelm i have is that when i first boot off the CD to install MDK, it loads up fine. but when it gets to the first selection screen (the language screen) the mouse don't work.. it is a synaptics USB touchpad. (why they put USB i don't know. my old one was PS2, worked fine.) this problem i can get around by using the keyboard, but when it goes to detect the hardware, it freezes.. i tried it a bunch of times, and even off a PCMCIA CD drive. i really don't know why it does this. i also don't know how to get into the BIOS on the laptop, tried all the usaul buttons, nothin seems to work... why oh why couldn't they have just stuck w/ 2K??? i really hate XP. thanks in advance for any help, Joe
Re: [newbie] resizing partitions
Well, I am having a problem with it locking up, and I want to make sure it is not something in the original config. Using the old train of thought I configured a 128mg swap. I have 768mg real memory. If I do a 'free -m' I will see very little use of the swap (1-8megs) but real stays close to 750mg, as the system aproches 768 the swap does not increase, but if I go over 768 everything locks up. So I figure the first thing I need to do is bring the swap up to what everyone is recomending, I have a 40gig and and a 60gig drive in the box, so there is no reason why I should not at least try the 'double the ram idea'. Actually I was hoping that diskdrake would acomplish this because I was able to resize my son's windoze partition when he wanted to play with linux and I installed mandrake. Funny, this is the first time I have found a linux tool that will do to windoze what it won't do for itself GRIN. [newbie] Multimedia-v.low sound volume?
Hi all, I am having a very weird problem with my sound running a AMD K7 onboard sound card, the Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI The problem is that even though the volume is at 100% on the controls the audio coming out of the speakers can only just be heard. I have been able to determine that there is nothing wrong with the speakers as they work AOK on my Windy box. I have tried many things with the help of Dave Jones but still have not been able to solve the error. I have tried: Aumix, Timidity, CDPlayer, Arts Builder, KDE Media Player, Midi and Karaoke Player, Midi synth, Sound Mixer, arts control, xmms. I have also tried running the following from a root terminal: sndconfig, kmix, gmix, umix and xmix? Three of the *mix ones commands could not be found and the kmix, I think had a nice GUI with all the levels showing at 80%, all the green lights are on and one red light on. There are three coloured holes on the panel which accept a 3.5mm jack plug namely, a pink one with a mic next to it, a blue one with headphones next to it and a green one with what looks like a speaker next to it. I am using the blue headphones socket. Although I'm using a newer kernel now, I can't say whether that problem still exists in the newer kernels because I still boot with the devfs=nomount option (I can't get the hang of devfs). So I guess you could try editing your /etc/lilo.conf file and in the append line add or change the devfs bit. Good luck. skinky -- oxymoron: Microsoft Works Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] applixware
i'm a bit late on this thread =) i've been using Applix for just over a year now. for the most part i love it. a few bugs, but i've figured out the work arounds. one disclaimer tho... one thing i don't care about is MS compatability. i haven't opened a Word file in months, and an X-Hell file doesn't even exist on my computer, so i can't say just how reliable the MS compatability is. if you don't mind spending money -- i paid $50 for it, which is about the limit of what i will pay for software -- i think it's good. of course StarOffice has gotten much better with the 6beta version. tho i haven't used it a whole lot, just played with it to see how it had changed. adrian ps -- there is a review of Applix with screen shots which i wrote on my website: http://204eastsouth.com/linux04.htm Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] System restarts itself
I agree with Erylon, I had the same problem 2 month back when I add in a new piece of RAM. I had one piece of 256 and added another piece of 256, then the machine started to reboot for no reason at all. The interesting thing was that it only happened when load started to get heavy. After I replaced the RAM, I then have no problem at all. I had a bad ethernet card that did that to me--took me months to find out what was causing it. Weird, I know. Also, an overtemp problem via the cpu can do this. How's your cpu fan? e. Any ideas where the fault could be or do I need to pack it back in the box and return it to the store and tell them I'm too fffing stupid to own a PC? Just a guess, but shouldn't the speakers be plugged into the green socket with the speaker next to it? skinky -- oxymoron: Microsoft Works Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
