RE: [newbie] KDE - Connection
Just found another problem. I can't connect to my network drive (From Windows XP to Mandrake 8.1) Now I think the Samba update is the problem. I had these two computers networked and working fine befor the update. How would I go about finding and uninstalling the update to see if that's my problem? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Mithrilhall2000 Sent: March 3, 2002 10:05 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] KDE - Connection I tried to install the "kde-moreartwork-liquid" and rebooted because it wasn't showing up in LookNFeel/Style. I just remembered that I did do some update the other day. I think they were : Samba, Apache, and a few others that I can't think of. Maybe these are the problems. Hi all, apologies for re-sending this, but I didn't see it appear last time It looks like I have really stuffed something up here. (lm8.1) I followed some instructions I came across for booting up with Xfice (I was using kde). everything appeared to work ok, but when I next rebooted, I was no longer able to start kde or gnome. if I use startx kde -- :1 it still starts xfice. I am guessing that you have at least one bad memory stick in the computer. I would run memtest or equivalent on the system and see what you get as a report. Bad ram can cause funny problems. If one stick shows up as bad you could try the pencil eraser as a cleaner on the contacts and stick it back in. I had some bad ram once and windows reported all of it there but memtest said the stick in the second slot was bad, I cleaned it and then it reported back as good, well mostly. Anyway that's my hunch for what it is worth. Dennis M. registered linux user # 180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Ed is to blame for helping lots of people! Me very much included. In fact he helped me so much I think I can answer this one ;-) AFAIR the F12 thing gets you to a live version of the error log. i.e. here you see error messages as they are issued to the system log. Re: [newbie] permissions on the network
Heather, No password doesn't matter as long as there is no password on both XP and LM accounts. What are the permissions on smbusers? On my system, that's in /etc/samba BTW. Do an "ls -l" and check the ownership as well as the permissions. On mine it's: -rw-r--r--1 root root 97 Nov 17 04:26 smbusers Remember that the first group seen here as "rw-" refers to the owner of the file, not to root unless root owns the file. If you have created smbusers with ownership other than root, try "chown root:root smbusers" to make it owned correctly, then try editing. Do this as root of course. I also get the DevFS errors despite reloading many times. I'm told that many of the below troubles might be related to a devfs problem. Is there anyone who can shine some light on what I am seeing in my log. A suggestion, a web site, something I could read, something to try...anything. I want very much to learn how to troubleshoot this system but am starting at ground zero and thus haven't the faintest idea as to where to start. Any help would be very much appreciated. [newbie] fonts too small
hi.! does anyone know how to make fonts bigger for browsers? i'm finding more and more websites difficult to read ( my screen resolution is not that high ) and i can't find an option on any of them to enlarge the text. Only on Konqueror, but it only makes buttons and widgets bigger. how can i change this? sizes are OK for everything else. thanks! Damian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] permissions on the network

[newbie] permissions on the network
OK - coming thick and fast now! I have Samba running, and can see the linux box from windows. However, I can't access it, as it gives me the message 'your account is not authorised to log in from this station'. I am following a tutorial in which I have created a public directory that should be accessible as guest. However, I can't get as far as that, as I am being told I do not have the necessary permissions to access the linux computer - this is from windows XP. How do I give myself permission? Thanks Heather
[newbie] resizing partitions mishap
Ok I used DiskDrake to resize my swap partition and created a new partition, /data, with the extra space. Now when I reboot I get an error and lockup. It says fsck: bad superbolck in /dev/hdb6 (the new partition) I get an option to correct the errors with yes/no selects, but it locks up here. I tried booting in failsafe and nonfb and noticed in the text boot up that when swapon /dev/hdb5 ( my swap partition) is run, it fails with an invalid arguement. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong and how I can fix it? Thanks, Jeff

[newbie] Ext2fs to ext3fs conversion in LM8.0?

Is it possible, with LM8.0, to switch over to the ext3fs -- the one that's jouranlized? {Btw, I don't wnat to try LM8.1 -- I've had enough problems getting 8.0 to work fine.] If so, how do I go about it with my present system? [newbie] local network error
Hello again - my second question in 24 hours, having solved the sound card :-)) Hope someone can help with this too! I've got the box up and running (Mandrake 8.0), and connecting to the Internet via a router connected to my home LAN. The LAN consists of mainly windows XP and 98 machines. I can ping the linux machine from the others and vice versa. I have set up a Samba conf file using SWAT, but am getting 2 error messages: 1. Clicking on 'local network' in my home directory returns 'Cannot connect to host 'localhost' 2. I tried netconf, and on trying to open the samba configuration entry there, I get the error message 'cannot find etc/samba/smbconf' Not surprising, since my conf file is simply etc/smb.conf Question is, where do I go next? Make 2 smb/conf files? TIA Heather

Once it loads up you can type Gnome in the find box and search and it will list all of the Gnome files. Select what you want and then click on the Install/remove button. If there are any dependencies it will catch them and inform you, click next and it should install everything. You typically don't need the devel files but on occasion another program will need them so this is a good way to do it, they get added as a dependency when needed. Anyway, in 8.1 when using wizdrake it always needs to have the network set up first. So you need both computers running on the network and able to surf the internet or what ever. Then set up Samba and with that you should be able to use printers and share files. I use komba2 to do that anymore but it isn't necessary to have running. It is like linneighborhood or windows explorer. HTH -- Dennis M. registered linux user # 180842 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
