It just requires a dependency which will not be supplied unless you
also have the nvidia driver installed

It is safe to ignore this dependency and install using --allow -nodeps

[newbie] Updated xfce

2004-03-11 Thread Charles A Edwards

xfce-4.0.4 rpms for both 9.2 and 10.0 are now available from my site

urpmi.addmedia eslrahc http://www.eslrahc.com/10.0/ with hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia eslrahc http://www.eslrahc.com/9.2/ with hdlist.cz

A note on the 9.2 rpms.
Because I did not adjust for the usage of the nvidia driver on the build
system it is possible that an unsatisfied X depend may be present.
This can be safely circumvented by usage of --allow-nodeps.

Re: [newbie] synching with Sony usb palm pilot pda

2004-03-11 Thread g
Thanks to the folks who responded.
Well, I just wanted to let folks know that it seems to pretty much be working
now. Not sure what I did. Actually to tell the truth, I am not sure that it
WASN"T working before! I may not have either had all the conduits activated
nor known where to look to view the synched palm data.

Its all pretty confusing to me in truth. I hope to ask more questions soon,
once i have time to do more exploring! Actually on my initial test while the
palm data is synching to linux, it doesn't appear that any data created in
the desktop application is synching back to the palm. I think I have the
conduits to synch, but I will have to look at it more closely when I have
more time. I trust I can draw an all you folks more knowledgable about these
things than I.

Thanks again!

Thanks for your reply
It looks like you answered my Mandrake 10.0 Community Pre-install ?
question here.

I changed my mind. The 3 Mandrake 10.0 ISO files are now on a 120GB
USB external hard drive. I can plug external hard drive into the
wife's laptop. I will burn the 3 Cd's using Windows XP on her
laptop. This my be better in the long run as I know MS-Windows and
I am a Linux [newbie].

Mounting the iso's as a loopback and copying the contents of all
three into one merged tree, and then regenerate the hdlists?

Easy for you to say.
That would take some time for me a [newbie] to do I can burn the 3
Cd's in a lot less time. I think I will tackle this some other time
after I know Linux better.

My home is a separate partition, but I do plan on resizing. May be I
should clarify just what I want to do and why.

The why
1. My CD burner will not work with Linux.
2. Can't make computer boot to CD have boot floppy disks.
3. I have lots of room to work with on external hard drive.
4. I have no choice need Windows XP reinstall on this computer.
5. Will have to make a boot partition for Windows XP.
6. Because of 4 & 5 above all current partition will have to be
changed

What I think I want to do?
1. Make coppies of /home, /etc and /usr/local (done this)
2. Burn the 3 MDK 10.0 Cd's (will start this in a few min.)
3. Delete all partition on hd0 (start with a clean slate)
4. Make 4 GB partition, Install Windows XP and 2 programs I can't
replace with any Linux apps.
5. Boot to floppy (this worked for MDK 9.2)
6. Install MDK 10.0 into remaining 6 GB of hd0.

Now that I know a little bit more about Linux there will be a lot
less stuff install with MDK 10.0 than what I installed with 9.2.
Like I will install KDE and not have gnome, Icewrm, and all of the
others that where installed when I had 9.2 install everything. I
will see what 10.0 has to offer and take some time picking what I
know I need now. I can always add other stuff later if needed.

Thanks

Your iso's are only OK, _IF_ you check them before and _AFTER_
burning. Even then, before I mail sets to friends I make sure
CD1 boots an proceeds.

md5sum /dev/hd?... and then compare to the appropriate
md5sum in the Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community-md5sums.asc

If they don't exactly match, first place to look is USER
choices (how did you burn?)... hardware (system, burner, media
used).

Is this with an nForce chipset based system? That's also a poor
USER hardware choice that has many problems. That many problems
such as this are often reported against. See cooker archive.

Did it through the install for me. You have to have Aspell installed.
Does auto spellcheck as well as manual.
That is in Linux Mandrake 9.2

Hi Ron,

You can use Software Media Manager under Software Management in drakconf
to add this as a security updates source.  Mandrake Update will then
look there for updates rather than going out on the net.

I have just tried it again, changing the settings to the ones you use. I
then exited the program and restarted it.

Dictionary was still Aspell default, and ISO was still 8859-15. But the
Client had changed back to International Ispell.

Trying to spell check with these settings caused KWord to crash.

I then restarted it and the settings it came up with were ASpell
default, 8895-15, International Ispell. So I changed the client again to
Aspell and clicked OK. Immediately opening the Spell Checking menu
again, and the client had reverted to International Ispell. Just to try
to cover everything, I did the same but clicked on Accept and then OK.
It tells me that the font "Symbol" isn't installed, but I can't think
that has any bearing on the problem.

As I said earlier, I have ASpell installed and have no problems with
KMail (which I understand uses it), or Abiword. However, KSpread and
KPresenter both crash when I try to spell check in them.

As Alice said, "Curiouser and curiouser!"

Cheers

Keith

CD1 boots to "press enter to install etc" then gives a message "could not

After  pause I get to the select keyboard, then accept licence, then partion,
then to select packages to install now the error message "no kernel

/usr/bin/per;-install/pkgs.pm.185 and so on. At this point I can do nothing

The problem appears to be caused when I burn the CDs, tried 4 times with

Why do you have Burn-free set to OFF? It may be that due to read-write errors your disk is not error free but looks like it has all 690.2mb. Set Burn-Free on and try again ?

them from the command line using cdrecord -v speed=2 dev=0,0,0 -eject

CD1 boots to "press enter to install etc" then gives a message "could not

After pause I get to the select keyboard, then accept licence, then partion,
then to select packages to install now the error message "no kernel
available" followed by a string of messages about
/usr/bin/per;-install/pkgs.pm.185 and so on. At this point I can do nothing

Very odd indeed! Have you tried changing the settings, then exiting,
in the hope that they are saved? After a crash things do tend to
revert to the settings when they last closed down properly, so that
fits the pattern.

Apart from that, I don't have any suggestions. I've looked again, and
there doesn't seem to be anything more that would affect the ability
to run the spellchecker - all the other settings are just options.

You can mount the first iso only as a loopback and boot from it to do a
basesystem install, but you cannot switch disks. If you want to run the
installer from the hard disk, you are better off mounting the iso's as a
loopback and copying the contents of all three into one merged tree, and then
regenerate the hdlists.

It might have something to do with the compiler version.
I run mdk 9.1. Have a look at the first warning my compiler
gives. In your compiler version it migth be more than deprecated, it might
have been removd. Try having it all on one line? Perhaps not practical
in a real world situation, but there is perhaps som new switch to gcc?

[newbie] Mac <-> Mandrake at the CLI

2004-03-11 Thread Brian's Linux Box
Hello All,

I need to transfer some files that I downloaded on my Mandrake
Box to
my Mac. I am running samba on both machines, so they can see
each other on the network. The problem I am having is, when I
open nautilus on my mandrake box and browse to the share on my
mac, the program stalls out.
I was wondering if there was a way to transfer files over my
local network from one machine to the next using the trusty
command line.

Thanks,

-=Thinker
Sure - Assuming OSX since you said samba - use 'scp'
Requires you have ssh installed on your Mandrake machine. You'll have
to turn it on in the Mac sharing preference pane.
Then from the Mandrake box type (all one line)
scp
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/Users/mac_user_name/Documents/fileyouwant
/home/mandrake_user_name/Desktop

adjust the /path/to/file name as required
Use scp -r to transfer recursively

HTH
Brian

PS You could try using Konqueror instead of Nautilis.

No problem Christophe.

Just take out 'acpi=ht' and add 'nolapic'. If you don't add
'nolapic' your laptop will bomb out on boot.

For the config file(lilo, i guess you mean) change all of them, just

If your computer doesn't boot, press esc at the bootscreen, and type

nameofbootchoice should be whatever choice you normally boot (i.e.

RE: [newbie] Modify my home directory

2004-03-11 Thread Tony S. Sykes
All you have done is created /home in what was your empty space. MCC is helping you by
moving the files across so you don't lose anything. You have 2 options either use the
previous suggestion or (somebody jump in if I am wrong) reinstall would be the easiest
way to restructure your drive. If you take the second option you will need to back up
your data first.

I guess that if MCC offered to move the files for you, you'll not loose
them... but I seldom use MCC, I prefer the command line, so I don't
really know.

 > But will the amount of space add up???

If you tell MCC to use the new partition for /home, the old one will be
left unused. So no, the space will not add up. But again, I am not
familiar with MCC, I might be wrong.

Anne.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I do have Aspell installed.

Kword started with the spelling settings of

Dictionary: English
ISO: 8859-1
Client: International Ispell

I changed the settings to the ones you gave me and typed a few words, some
with spelling mistakes. When I tried to spell check, KWord crashed!

On restarting, it had defaulted back to the settings I gave at the beginning
of this reply. Nothing happens when I try to spell check using these
settings. Ispell is installed. I have tried many combinations of Dictionary,
ISO, and Client, but it always starts with the "default" settings, rather
than the ones I have changed it to. Most combinations just don't work, but
some make it crash.

Very peculiar!

Keith

Here's the link for easy urpmi that works for me today.

http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php

urpmi.removemedia -a will take away the cd's . Do that then use the
link above to add sources.

I figure I have two choices. Go around in circles for a day or two,

Well, I'm about to give up on this! I have gone back to the onboard
soound. I cannot get anything but CD audio with ALSA no matter what I try.
With OSS using sndconfig, I can get CD audio plus audio from some of the
games. I still can't play a WAV file in XMMS. But I guess that's the best
I can hope for right now.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd still love to hear them, but I don't think
I'm going to actively pursue this issue anymore (for now).

Try going to Mandrake Control Center, System, Services. That's what it

The firewall is blocking all connections in and out, thereby limiting
any internet connection. Only block what you'll never use, or specify
ports instead. It happens to be a very good firewall. For instance, I
was talking through gAIM once, while playing with the firewall.
Suddenly, no communication. Interesting, how well it blocks connections.

For a starter you will need port 80 open for the web

I guess that if MCC offered to move the files for you, you'll not loose
them... but I seldom use MCC, I prefer the command line, so I don't
really know.

> But will the amount of space add up???

If you tell MCC to use the new partition for /home, the old one will be
left unused. So no, the space will not add up. But again, I am not
familiar with MCC, I might be wrong.

You can't unmount a /home partition on a running system, because it's
in use. You need to boot into single user mode for that (no graphic
environment, only a shell), or boot from the MDK rescue disk into a
shell.

What is the difference between /home and /user directories?

/home contains the home directories of your users.
Standard MDK installation doesn't have /user but /usr. /usr contains
almost all the executables - including gnome, kde, X. It does not
normally contain user files.

What type of file system should I use if I can not modify my /home
directory?

Resizing the /home partition means loosing all the data there
contained. A better option would be to format the freed up space as a
new ext3 partition, say hda9, and then mount the new partition
somewhere under /home. For example, you might dedicate it to a user
(in this case you'd mount it under /home/newuser, for example), or to
increase the space dedicated to an already existing user (for example,
if userX needs additional space for mp3, you might create a
/home/userX/mp3 directory and mount hda9 there).

Thanks

[newbie] Mandrake Control Center Down

Hi,

When I go to start Mandrake Control Center or click Configure My Computer it
prompts me for the root password and after that it just hangs on the splash
and just says "Loading... please wait" at the bottom, but never actually
loads. It had worked fine previously.

I'm not sure this has anything to with it - but I did a bunch of updates for
my Mandrake 9.2 last night through the update option in the control center.

Any ideas on what I should or can do to get the Conrol Center back?

Thanks.
