Re: [newbie] synching with Sony usb palm pilot pda
Thanks to the folks who responded. Well, I just wanted to let folks know that it seems to pretty much be working now. Not sure what I did. Actually to tell the truth, I am not sure that it WASN"T working before! I may not have either had all the conduits activated nor known where to look to view the synched palm data. Its all pretty confusing to me in truth. I hope to ask more questions soon, once i have time to do more exploring! Actually on my initial test while the palm data is synching to linux, it doesn't appear that any data created in the desktop application is synching back to the palm. I think I have the conduits to synch, but I will have to look at it more closely when I have more time. I trust I can draw an all you folks more knowledgable about these things than I. Thanks again! I changed my mind. The 3 Mandrake 10.0 ISO files are now on a 120GB USB external hard drive. I can plug external hard drive into the wife's laptop. I will burn the 3 Cd's using Windows XP on her laptop. This my be better in the long run as I know MS-Windows and I am a Linux [newbie]. Mounting the iso's as a loopback and copying the contents of all three into one merged tree, and then regenerate the hdlists? Easy for you to say. That would take some time for me a [newbie] to do I can burn the 3 Cd's in a lot less time. I think I will tackle this some other time after I know Linux better. My home is a separate partition, but I do plan on resizing. May be I should clarify just what I want to do and why. The why 1. My CD burner will not work with Linux. 2. Can't make computer boot to CD have boot floppy disks. 3. I have lots of room to work with on external hard drive. 4. I have no choice need Windows XP reinstall on this computer. 5. Will have to make a boot partition for Windows XP. 6. Because of 4 & 5 above all current partition will have to be changed What I think I want to do? 1. Make coppies of /home, /etc and /usr/local (done this) 2. Burn the 3 MDK 10.0 Cd's (will start this in a few min.) 3. Delete all partition on hd0 (start with a clean slate) 4. Make 4 GB partition, Install Windows XP and 2 programs I can't replace with any Linux apps. 5. Boot to floppy (this worked for MDK 9.2) 6. Install MDK 10.0 into remaining 6 GB of hd0. Now that I know a little bit more about Linux there will be a lot less stuff install with MDK 10.0 than what I installed with 9.2. Like I will install KDE and not have gnome, Icewrm, and all of the others that where installed when I had 9.2 install everything. I will see what 10.0 has to offer and take some time picking what I know I need now. I can always add other stuff later if needed. I then exited the program and restarted it. Dictionary was still Aspell default, and ISO was still 8859-15. But the Client had changed back to International Ispell. Trying to spell check with these settings caused KWord to crash. I then restarted it and the settings it came up with were ASpell default, 8895-15, International Ispell. So I changed the client again to Aspell and clicked OK. Immediately opening the Spell Checking menu again, and the client had reverted to International Ispell. Just to try to cover everything, I did the same but clicked on Accept and then OK. It tells me that the font "Symbol" isn't installed, but I can't think that has any bearing on the problem. As I said earlier, I have ASpell installed and have no problems with KMail (which I understand uses it), or Abiword. However, KSpread and KPresenter both crash when I try to spell check in them. After a crash things do tend to revert to the settings when they last closed down properly, so that fits the pattern. Apart from that, I don't have any suggestions. I've looked again, and there doesn't seem to be anything more that would affect the ability to run the spellchecker - all the other settings are just options. [newbie] Mac <-> Mandrake at the CLI
Hello All, I need to transfer some files that I downloaded on my Mandrake Box to my Mac. I am running samba on both machines, so they can see each other on the network. The problem I am having is, when I open nautilus on my mandrake box and browse to the share on my mac, the program stalls out. I was wondering if there was a way to transfer files over my local network from one machine to the next using the trusty command line. Thanks, -=Thinker Sure - Assuming OSX since you said samba - use 'scp' Requires you have ssh installed on your Mandrake machine. You'll have to turn it on in the Mac sharing preference pane. Then from the Mandrake box type (all one line) scp [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/Users/mac_user_name/Documents/fileyouwant /home/mandrake_user_name/Desktop adjust the /path/to/file name as required Use scp -r to transfer recursively HTH Brian PS You could try using Konqueror instead of Nautilis. RE: [newbie] Modify my home directory
All you have done is created /home in what was your empty space. MCC is helping you by moving the files across so you don't lose anything. You have 2 options either use the previous suggestion or (somebody jump in if I am wrong) reinstall would be the easiest way to restructure your drive. Mandrake Update will then look there for updates rather than going out on the net. HTH Brian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Firewal not working...
Hello, I opened port 80 by typing tcp/80 udp/80 in the advanced panel of the firewall setup. Still no access to the net. I removed all the firewall and I can connect again. What did I wrong? Christophe Aron Smith wrote: On Wednesday 10 March 2004 01:24 pm, Marc Resnick wrote: rhein wrote: And one more... I red the instruction to setup a firewall. I use my machine since the first MDK installation with no firewall. In my case I had just to remove the "everything" cross and install a package. No problem until I tried to connect to the net or open a website. Nothing works. I go back to the firewall and click in "everything" and I'm back on the net. What shall I do? Is the firewall not just limiting the access to my machine? Thanks for your help. Christophe Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com The firewall is blocking all connections in and out, thereby limiting any internet connection. Only block what you'll never use, or specify ports instead. It happens to be a very good firewall. For instance, I was talking through gAIM once, while playing with the firewall. Suddenly, no communication. Interesting, how well it blocks connections. For a starter you will need port 80 open for the web --Marc Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Modify my home directory
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > But if I mount my empty space to /home > MCC asked me if I want to transfer the files to the new partition... > SO in that case I do not loose my user files? I guess that if MCC offered to move the files for you, you'll not loose them... but I seldom use MCC, I prefer the command line, so I don't really know. > But will the amount of space add up??? If you tell MCC to use the new partition for /home, the old one will be left unused. So no, the space will not add up. But again, I am not familiar with MCC, I might be wrong. raffaele Raffaele Belardi wrote: Christophe, see below. raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Me again... I tried to make my home directory bigger... I first shrinked my windows partition (hda1) to obtain 8 Gb... Then I wanted to unmount my home directory (hda8) to make it bigger... When I click on unmount nothing happens... Why? You can't unmount a /home partition on a running system, because it's in use. You need to boot into single user mode for that (no graphic environment, only a shell), or boot from the MDK rescue disk into a shell. What is the difference between /home and /user directories? /home contains the home directories of your users. Standard MDK installation doesn't have /user but /usr. /usr contains almost all the executables - including gnome, kde, X. It does not normally contain user files. What type of file system should I use if I can not modify my /home directory? Resizing the /home partition means loosing all the data there contained. A better option would be to format the freed up space as a new ext3 partition, say hda9, and then mount the new partition somewhere under /home. For example, you might dedicate it to a user (in this case you'd mount it under /home/newuser, for example), or to increase the space dedicated to an already existing user (for example, if userX needs additional space for mp3, you might create a /home/userX/mp3 directory and mount hda9 there). [newbie] Mandrake Control Center Down
Hi, When I go to start Mandrake Control Center or click Configure My Computer it prompts me for the root password and after that it just hangs on the splash and just says "Loading... please wait" at the bottom, but never actually loads. It had worked fine previously. I'm not sure this has anything to with it - but I did a bunch of updates for my Mandrake 9.2 last night through the update option in the control center. Any ideas on what I should or can do to get the Conrol Center back? Thanks. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
