Steve,

Due to the fire in Manchester I can't get on the internet, but if it is a hub as well,
i.e. it has more than 2 rj45 ports on it then this is not a problem.

Subject: [newbie] Can I network two local machines with a ADSL remote
router

I've just bought a DSL-504 ADSL remote
router(http://www.dlink.com.au/products/broadband/dsl504/) so that I can
connect two stand-alone machines running Mandrake 10 to my ADSL account.

I'm a total novice about networking, but I was wondering if once I have
these two machines connected to this thing would it be possible to share
files between the two machines via this router? I'm guessing that I'm
talking about a peer to peer network here?

If it is possible how easy or difficult is this to do with Linux? At the
moment I just shuffle files between the two machines using a usb drive.

Steve

[newbie] Lawless Community

2004-03-30 Thread Frank
Thought I would get up to speed with Mandrake10

Running a P3 733Hz 512RAM box with all four PCI's filled [nothing
special nor specific]

How my partitions started out from playing around with Mandrake9.1:
/dev/hda5 /
/dev/hda1 /boot
/dev/hda8 /home
/dev/hda3 /mnt/empty
/dev/hdb2 /mnt/hdb2_boot
/dev/hdb5 /mnt/hdb5_root
/dev/hdb6 /mnt/hdb6_var
/dev/hdb7 /mnt/hdb7_usr
/dev/hdb9 /mnt/hdb9_home
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/win_c
/dev/hda4 /tmp
/dev/hda6 /usr
/dev/hda9 /var
So as you can see, two harddrives, windows where it belongs with /empty
a partition for backups and sharing stuff betwixt Linux and windows.

Now I go for updating to Mandrake10 [ hda only ]

Didn't go so well and froze at installing bootloader. Got past that
AND got to use the Mandrake Control Centre to install more software.
But with things not looking settled, went for the 'clean' install [
without re-partitioning ] and formatting hda5,1,8,4,69 to start things off.

Again with the freeze at installing bootloader but this time able to
back up one and remove entries within lilo that sought to boot the /empty
partition as a windows thing, still made no difference. Able to go
through 'Summary' and put some things right even further but...
Upon manual reboot, was able to get into Mandrake10/KDE3.2
Now I go to open Mandrake Control Centre and nothing happens I
mean just nothing happens, like I didn't even try to open in the first
place.

Hence Lawless Mandrake10 Community.

Any suggestions anyone?

Oh, and the main reason for doing the Mandrake10 thing was 'cause I
could not get KDE into sound even though sound was there at the start
and the test sound made nice noise. Now with KDE3.2 -- dead silence.

restart printers if, as sometimes happens, they get stopped when

Server or client?
If server then install the drakwizard RPM and there will be a new server set
up section in Mandrake Control Centre. You can also use webmin if you install
webmin RPM and then point a browser to https://localhost:1

For dhcp client you can put keywords in the network config
files /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg- where is the interface
name.
Keywords I am aware of are :-
DHCP_HOSTNAME=
DHCP_CLIENT=/sbin/pump or /sbin/dhclient or /sbin/dhcpcd (dhclient is the
default)
NEEDHOSTNAME
PEERDNS
PEERYP
PEERNTPD
DHCP_TIMEOUT

See 'man dhclient' (or man pump or man dhcpcd) for an explanation of the
parameters these keywords translate to.

There are radio buttons in the Mandrake network connection wizard to set some
of these keywords.

Hi,

I had the same sort of problem with my Vaio...

Let me guess - XMMS won't play, KDE crashes on startup, Mplayer is flakey?

Check your sound driver in DrakConf (go to Hardware and configure the sound
driver from there). I noticed that the sound driver that Mandrake was using
was different to the one I had used to MDK9.0... I picked the original one
and rebooted. Everything works perfectly now.

(I also screwed about with sound other things, but it's likely was I barking

Hope some of the following will help you find your sound, I'm still
trying and I certainly don't understand a lot of this.

Try :-

#lspcidrake -v | fgrep AUDIO ( should tell which driver your card uses
by default )

#grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf ( should tell you what driver it
currently uses )

#/sbin/lsmod ( should enable you to check if its module is loaded or not )

#aumix -q ( will tell you if the sound level is muted or not -- Here I
found aumix hadn't been installed so will wait till tomorrows reboot to
see if it works or not having done '#urpmi aumix' to install it. )

#/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp ( should tell you which program uses the sound
card -- here I got nothing at all ??? )

All this is taken from Mandrake10 install scripts so if you missed them
then I hope they help. And if you get sound working please share with me

It is not only possible, it should be automatic. Each machine will get a
particular IP address, either autoconfig'ed, static assigned by you or
assigned by DHCP on the router. If you know the IP address of each machine,
it is trivial to connect from one to the other machine. You should be able
to use ftp direct to the machine (provided you have a server on one), set up
an NFS or Samba share, etc.

I have just installed a D-Link DSL-504 router. One of the machines connected

If I boot to Linux, web browsing is very slow, much slower than when I'm
booted to XP. Browsing with Linux is also much slower than when I was
connecting to my ADSL account using my old Alcatel Speed Touch Home modem.

Mozilla indicates that is taking an usually long time resolving host names.

Does anybody know what I need to do to bring Linux up to speed?

I used exactly the same router for a long time...

works fine with linux..

have you set your dns server to 192.168.0.1 ???

the 504 has its own dns cache.. so you can point your /etc/resolve.conf
to it and it will speed things up considerably.

give it a try.

I can whatch VCDs, lissen to cds and MP3 with xine and Kaffeine. Burn

I found also this on a xine download page:

By default, xine expects to find your DVD-ROM at //dev/dvd/. Creating a
symbolic link to your device is recommended (for example, //dev/hdc/ or
//dev/scd0/). The command below should work for most users:

 # ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd

Since I have a combo driver I don't know how to check the pass to my

dvdbackup is Not a mdk rpm and is not built to conform to mdk standards.
It has an explicit require for libdvdread and No mdk rpm would do so but
would allow rpm to, itself, define any/all libxxx requires

libdvdread2-0.9.3-4mdk.i586 does not provide libdvdread.
It provides ibdvdread2 = 0.9.3 and libdvdread.so.2, with the libxxx.so.x
being the defining value rpm would use for its dependency check.

You could do the installation using --nodeps but there is no guarantee
that dvdbackup would work as there is no means of determining with which
version or 'major' of libdvdread was used to compile dvdbackup.

Let me guess - XMMS won't play, KDE crashes on startup, Mplayer is flakey?

Check your sound driver in DrakConf (go to Hardware and configure the sound
driver from there). I noticed that the sound driver that Mandrake was using

and rebooted. Everything works perfectly now.

Yet more evidence that DRM, Trusted Computing, whatever ya wanna call it, has
nothing to do with 'piracy' and everything to do with greed.

While file-sharing continues to be blamed by the recording industry for
slumping music sales, a new study conducted by the Harvard Business School shows
that downloading has only a negligible effect on CD sales.

Downloads have an effect on sales which is statistically indistinguishable from
zero, concludes the report,...

[newbie] Accessing Secure Webpages: PROBLEM UPDATE

2004-03-30 Thread taylord-angwyn
Hi All,
I posted the following a couple of weeks and was advised
that a change in
/etc/ppp/options of MRU/MTU values (both higher and lower)
fix the problem.
It didn't.
As no other advise has come my way decide to have another
shot at it to see
if it catches the eye of someone who missed it the first
time round who may
have an idea of whats going on.
System: DSE Terminator 1100
Opsys: Mandrake 9.2 (Powerpack, recently installed)

Problem: using Mozilla Firebird and Konqueror I cannot
access any secure sites, eg those sites whose address
bigins https:// etc

The statistics panel from kppp shows very low levels of
activity which appears to be my hanshaking to the remote in
red but the remote is a solid blue line (no response??
maybe??)

I have fiddled with /etc/ppp/options to get it the same as
one other local Mandrake user.
I have added domain clear.net.nz to resolv.conf (both
copies).

I have checked and rechecked my settings in kppp and the
browsers but cannot find the reason for this strange
behaviour.

As a side note I can easily browse other pages, even with my
slow dial-up connection, without too many delays, I can
fetch, but not send email.

Something is missing?? but what??

UPDATE PART
I tried adjusting the MRY/MTU values as suggested but to no
avail.

Last week did a complete reinstall from the ground up so to
speak.
Problem still exists, although I can now send mail provided
the text
is no more than 280 charactors, ie 2 and a bit lines.

On longer mails the client hangs at 'sending DATA'. Could
this be a
smtp config problem and if so how and where do I fix?

Could the mail problem be connected to the inablitiy to be
able to
connect to https:// pages.

 a confused Newbie

Very weird.

Taylord, have you checked the quality of your phone line/modem
connection?

Something simple, like an ifconfig, will tell you how many packets are
dropped during a session.

$ /sbin/ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:39:98:B4:9D
  inet addr:192.168.0.242 Bcast:255.255.255.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
  inet6 addr: fe80::200:39ff:fe98:b49d/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
  RX packets:39497 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
  TX packets:39530 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
   ^
   ^

HTTPS is a more demanding protocol than HTTP. Packet losses can make a
HTTPS (HTTP over SSL) connection impossible. In addition to the standard
handshake with HTTP, under HTTPS there is public key interchange and
symmetric key and algorithm agreement. Dropping packets at these stages
may be critical to establishing the connection.

Regarding SMTP, I really don't know what to tell you but, again, I would
check a possible noisy phone line.

I located the sorce files (tar.gz) for libdvdread and dvdbackup. I
configure|make|make install for libdvdread and then compiled dvdbackup (it
did not have a configure). All went well until I ran dvdbackup. It gave me

The make install placed libdvdread.so.3 (as a sym link to another so) in
/usr/local/lib and this path was -L in dvdbackup compile. How can I find
out why the executable can not find it? The so file has all permissions.

Thanks for you help,

This may sound elementary but, are you running a firewall package like
guarddog? Have you closed off port 443 for outgoing traffic? SSL runs on
443 and if that port is closed, you would still be able to browse the web on
port 80 using HTTP, but HTTPS would fail because of 443 being closed.

[newbie] More good press for Mandrake

2004-03-30 Thread JoeHill

So far, it's been a banner year for MandrakeSoft, makers of Mandrakelinux. In
January, they announced a return to profitability, followed by a return to the
stock market in mid-March. Sandwiched between these two significant business
events, MandrakeSoft released Mandrakelinux 10.0 Community, an early-adopter's
release of Mandrakelinux 10.0 Official, due out in May. Even though it's only a
public beta, the newest Mandrakelinux is definitely worth the download, some
rough edges notwithstanding. Here's why I think so.

[newbie] Run remote gnome-session on local gnome

2004-03-30 Thread Guy Rouillier
Under Windows, I can run cygwin and create a X session running in a single window,
inside which I can run gnome-session on a remote Linux. I like that usage model. I
know about and have used vnc, but I prefer do the remote X thing. Is it possible to
do the same thing while running gnome on my local Linux system? I tried simply ssh -X
-l into a remote box and simply firing up gnome-session, and gnome actually came up,
but it got upset that I was already running a window manager, and got totally confused
since I had two panels. I had to exit X completely to get it reset.

I haven't found a way to confine a remote gnome-session to a single window under
Linux. Appreciate any pointers.

I don't know about over all, but the stats on my site this month are

Linux:	226

Macintosh OSX: 206
Macintosh Classic: 47
Since its just a HTML help site its pretty non OS specific so I'd guess
that the stats are pretty representative.
as you can see, linux is higher then either OSX or classing alone, but
together they are ahead of linux.
for the last few months it has been back and forth like this,, some
months linux tops both classic and OSX together.

I do have a guy in a mac that visits once or twice a week that may have
squed the results towards the macs alittle though.

Its good that they are on a par though.. excellent for linux I'd say.

fine in 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 10.00. I can print in draft at 300 all the
way up to photos. I have had no problems with it. Moe

That's print. What about fax, scan and copy?

 Regards
  Trevor Rhodes
