Re: [newbie] Why is my FAT always corrupted by Linux?

2004-05-14 Thread Frank
And just another thought.

I found that unless you included [ actually typed ] the file extension
name ( eg *.txt) then my system when within windows is not happy about
it at all.

To check others concerns issue the following from your command client:
$su
Password
#fdisk /dev/hda(assuming you are using only one harddrive)
At the prompt type p (exclude quotes)
The result should show you exactly what that partition is.
At the prompt type q to quit and return to your command prompt
#exit
You might already know all this but others reading this thread may need
to know how to find out.

Enjoy

Frank

[newbie] nvidia5336 + MDK 10.0official

2004-05-14 Thread Baka Tamás
Hi!

I installed the nvidia driver the usual way (logout from x, kill mdkdm, X,
delete x-lock from tmp, install kernel sources, runinstaller, change nv to
nvidia), but upon restarting x, it simply hangs with some blueish lines at
the bottom of the screen. Only reset works, and changing nvidia back to nv
causes the same problem. Had to reinstall the whole thing.

I mirrored the club-france ftp site and burned it to dvd...

What's wrong, what's the solution?

In 10.0 official, the xmms playlist seems to work seperately from the main

there. Choosing a k-jofol skin would be ok, but upon restart xmms forgets the

Why?

[newbie] 10.0 slower than 9.2?

2004-05-14 Thread Raffaele BELARDI
Simple test: same movies that in 9.2 played fine and smooth in 10.0 skip
LOTS of frames. I tried with mplayer, xine and totem, always the same
result. Yes, it's an old mobo (AMD K6-2/550), but in 9.2 it did its job.

So I successfully installed the 2.4.25 kernel provided on the 10.0 cd,
but was unable to configure the ISA PNP audio card. The isapnp utility
configures and enables the card without errors, but modprobe snd-azt2320
exits with an error (no azt2320 card found). Card works fine in 9.2
and 10.0 with 2.6 kernel.

Next I will try installing the 9.2 version of mplayer into 10.0, just to
rule out kernel issues. If it doesn't do the job, I'll have to go back
to 9.2 :-(

Also, while burning a CD the system does not respond to any command.
It's not frozen (icewm responds fine), but application it will not even
start to load it until the cd burning is finished. And, accessing a CD
in 10.0 eats up all CPU, while in 9.2 it was only using a small fraction
- like if it was not using DMA, but DMA is enabled for all drives.

I remember somebody defining 10.0 speed daemon so I was quite
negatively impressed by my results. Has anybody noticed such bad
performance?

Whats that? How do I get there?

gnomecc is the Gnome Control Center. It is available in the Mandrake
menu, or from a shell just enter 'gnomecc', you will then be able to
adjust your Palm settings in there.

 After nothing worked, I tried
 ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot
 as root.

You can adjust this setting in the Gnome CC and then use /dev/pilot
without the symlink you created.

 Any advice would be appreciated.
 yea, I'm a newbie :)

Make sure the gpilot dameon is running, and nothing else (no jpilot, no
kpilot). To do that enter ps -ef | grep pilot in a shell and make sure
the only output is about gpilot.

Then from the gnomecc (or from Evolution - Tools - Pilot settings)
edit the pilot settings and hit get from pilot to get the pilot ID.
Then set some conduits to enable synching (for example EAddress will
synch your contacts with Evolution - you'll need the Mandrake packages
gnome-pilot-conduits and evolution-pilot).

If you're still in trouble, stop gpilot (and make sure it is stopped)
and try invoking pilot-xfer from a shell:
pilot-xfer -p /dev/usb/tts/1 -l
(it will list the files on your PDA)

Good luck,

[newbie] Kontact problems

2004-05-14 Thread SME Admin
Hi Folks

I've got several mail accounts setup in Kontact but am having a few problems
with collecting email.

I'm on ADSL via a router, so any machine that is on the network is on the
internet. I'm using Mandrake 10 and Kontact for email, news, etc.

Most times whenever I check email I get an error message that says

Could not login to pop.freeuk.com The server terminated the connection
immediately

As I have several accounts, i get one of these error boxes per account that it
fails to check.

It doesn't happen all the time, but quite a lot these days. For example if I
check email when it logs in, I get it, but 30 seconds later it could be fine,
or not, depending on how it feels. I can't find any pattern other than that
message.

I don't know how to fix it, I don't know where it is getting its information
from but during this time I am connected to IRC, MSN, ICQ and www ok, so the
connection is there and up.

Help!

Cheers

Elwyn

David, You may already know this but..
are you sure its FAT and not NTFS ..
I dont have W2K, but IIRC it uses NTFS and Linux can't write to
it. It can read NTFS .. just no writing to it.

different EOL character, so you could look into dos2unix, which will

Thanks for the reply. I am sure its FAT. I create a 1GB FAT partition
(hda1)
for file tansfer. W2K is NFTF (hda2). I also boot to DOS on that partition
to run some old programs that only run under DOS.

Its not line endings or anything like that. It file system corruption.
When
I run the DOS scandisk, it complains about cross linked files, unused
sectors,
etc. The directory is messed up. I regularly lose data for linux writes.

Its is wierd because sometimes even Linux will realize that the directory is
hosed (while I am working in a Linux session).

[newbie] Newbie network question

2004-05-14 Thread John
Hi,

I'm new to Linux (Just got my copy of mandrake 10 this morning). I
managed to partition my hard drive and install Mandrake with no problems
(amazing, for a newbie klutz like me).

So far I really like the system - if it wasn't for a few vital programs
that have no Linux equivalent, I would wave goodbye to windows forever.

Anyway, here's my question:

I have two PCs in a LAN. One is my Newbie Linux machine, the other runs

The Linux machine can see and transfer the files on the Windows machine
with no trouble at all, which is great.

But the Linux machine seems to be invisible to the Windows machine. I'd
be *really* grateful if someone can give me any tips how to fix this.
Am I right in assuming that I have to set up the Linux machine as a
Samba server (if that's the right term)?

As a second question, is there any easy way to make the Linux machine
'see' the windows partition on its own hard drive, so as to transfer
files etc.

Please be gentle with me! My total knowledge of Linux so far only comes
from an hour or so looking at the manuals.

Many thanks,

John

Did you use acpi or Acpi? It makes a difference. Also, check if you
have the directory /proc/acpi because if you don't then it doesn't pay
to go any farther. (Your BIOS doesn't support ACPI, or you didn't

What you will need to do is to install the acpi RPM. You can do this

Hmm... Ed, maybe your situation stems from the upgrade. When I
shuffled the 10.0CE into my previous 9.2 system I chose install.
But opted not to format my /home partition. I think this is the
2.nd safest route next to doing a complete wipe of the hard disk. I
still have some dot-files left over from 9.2 causing weird things
in 10.0, but nothing serious.

Funny thing is, however, I'm absolutely sure that in 9.2 one can
change display managers as well. So you should have the option
preserved in 10.0.

And about urpme -a kde : I don't think that's necessary. When
something in KDE goes south beyond recovery, it's an easy thing
just to remove your entire .kde directory. That way, the next time
you log into KDE, it will use the default configurations. No big
deal.

My last idea : have you installed all the updates to 10.0 ?

If that doesn't work, someone wiser than me : step in, please.

Kaj Haulrich.

 Good luck,

I had to chmod the device port (in mycase the serial I/O) so that I could read
and write it.

find can be your friend. You can find directories and files, and specify
recursion depth using -mindepth and -maxdepth. So an easy solution
(depending on what you want to do with what you find) could be something
like

find /home/robin/crappywordfiles -type f -iname '*.doc'

by default it will recurse crappywordfiles to infinity finding all files
that end in .doc, .DOC, .dOC etc.

or if you really wanna cd to the directories themselves, something like

for i in `find /home/robin/crappywordfiles -type d`
do
cd $i
rm -f *.doc
done

To share file on you Linux machine with your Windows machines, you will
need to install the Samba server package. This is not normaly installed
as part of the workstation package.

On the second part, if your windows partition is FAT16 or FAT32, it is
probably mounted at /mnt/windows, so it will look like part of the Linux
file system. I don't know if a NTFS file system will be mounted
automaticly. If it is, it will be mounted read-only because there are
problems writing to a NTFS.

Joe, let me know and I'll email the binary to you, if you haven't
already gotten one. I did a quick look for it, it seems that it might
have been originally done for Windows and/or beos, but there was source
patches available for a debian pkg, so that's what I used. A few
makefile tweaks later, and out popped a 107k binary. IOW, it's pretty
trivial to compile. Now whether or not it'll run is anyone's guess, but
it doesn't require any extra things, so an rpm isn't strictly needed.

I'm currently trying it out on a number of Suspense radio mp3s I found
recently. There's potentally a lot of variation in volume on these types
of things and mp3 - wav - normalize is not at least for this the best
way to go as I'm burning the mp3s to data CDs, 100+ episodes at a time
:).

So far I really like the system - if it wasn't for a few vital
programs that have no Linux equivalent, I would wave goodbye to
  windows forever.

  Anyway, here's my question:

I have two PCs in a LAN. One is my Newbie Linux machine, the
  other runs Windows XP.

The Linux machine can see and transfer the files on the Windows
machine with no trouble at all, which is great.

But the Linux machine seems to be invisible to the Windows
machine. I'd be *really* grateful if someone can give me any
tips how to fix this. Am I right in assuming that I have to set
up the Linux machine as a Samba server (if that's the right
  term)?

As a second question, is there any easy way to make the Linux
machine 'see' the windows partition on its own hard drive, so as
  to transfer files etc.

Please be gentle with me! My total knowledge of Linux so far
only comes from an hour or so looking at the manuals.

  Many thanks,

  John

To share file on you Linux machine with your Windows machines, you
will need to install the Samba server package. This is not
normaly installed as part of the workstation package.

On the second part, if your windows partition is FAT16 or FAT32,
it is probably mounted at /mnt/windows, so it will look like part
of the Linux file system. I don't know if a NTFS file system will
be mounted automaticly. If it is, it will be mounted read-only
because there are problems writing to a NTFS.

I'm trying to write a bash script that will recurse through a directory,

for i in *
 do
   if [-d $i]; then
 cd $i

and so on, but the third line obviously has the wrong syntax, as I get
[!: command not found. Any ideas?

find can be your friend. You can find directories and files, and specify
recursion depth using -mindepth and -maxdepth. So an easy solution
(depending on what you want to do with what you find) could be something
like
find /home/robin/crappywordfiles -type f -iname '*.doc'

by default it will recurse crappywordfiles to infinity finding all files
that end in .doc, .DOC, .dOC etc.

or if you really wanna cd to the directories themselves, something like

for i in `find /home/robin/crappywordfiles -type d`
do
cd $i
rm -f *.doc
done
Works a treat!

The reason I'm messing around with evil Word files is that it is the
format I usually receive essays in (I've tried teaching my students the
save as function in Word, but it doesn't sink in, and besides, other
formats that Word can produce are equally problematic). It's not
normally a problem, since I can open them in OpenOffice, write my
comments and post them back, but sometimes I also want to do some
analysis on them, for which plain text is essential (see
http://lists.bilkent.edu.tr/~robin/cgibin/concord.cgi for something I
did a few years back).

Thanks a lot,

Sir Robin

Re: [newbie] Howto install nvidia drivers

2004-05-14 Thread Wojciech Podgrni
Uytkownik Johan napisa:

Hi,

I installed a ready compiled kernel..but have nividia card.

Ok, it boots up to a command line login..after some screen on/off's.

Rebooting in original is ok.

Maybe I have to install some drivers on the new kernel..because its working on the old?

Is there a easy way..looking at some howto's seems that I must compile a kernel?

Please some pointers.
Thanks
You have to compile nvidia driver for a new kernel. Don't worry - it's
quite easy:
1) Go to NVIDIA homepage (http://www.nvidia.com/). Download the latest
Linux driver.
2) Install kernel source that matches your current kernel.
3) Go to init level 3. Make your downloaded NVIDIA package executable
(chmod +x name_of_package).
4) Run your package as superuser. It should execute smoothly (and quickly).
5a) Modify /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to use the nvidia driver if necessary
(that is, if it hasn't been done before).
5b) Modfy /etc/modules (or /etc/modprobe.preload if you use 2.6 kernel)
to preload nvidia module ad each start of a system.
6) You can now test it by executing commands modprobe nvidia (loading
the module to memory) and service dm start (starting X server). It
should work well.
I hope it helps - my nvidia card (WinFastA360TDH with NVIDIA GeForce
5700 chip) works well on my machine.
One more thing - each time you update kernel or a XFree86 package (the
one containing OpenGL libraries - because NVIDIA driver overrides them)
you should do following steps:
1) Go to init level 3 (or just execute service dm stop)
2) Uninstall NVIDIA driver (nvidia-installer --uninstall)
3) Install updated package (if it is kernel, installation of its source
and a reboot to use a new one is necessary).
4) Install NVIDIA driver.
If your want just to update driver, run nvidia-installer --update as
superuser when connected to Internet.

Wojciech Podgrni
PS. For club users there is downloadable NVIDIA package with precompiled
drivers (but I am not member, so I cannot help you with them).
