You say you have no problem using your local network so it might be a
routing problem or a DNS problem.

If you can ping an IP address in the Internet, then it is not a routing
problem. If you can't, check that your default gateway is pointing to
the router IP. You can use the route command to get this done.

After solving any routing problem, you can check for DNS problems. Take
a look at /etc/resolv.conf and make sure that there is at least one line
 reading:
   nameserver ipAddress.of.YourISP.DNSserver

 Good luck

Yes, exactly. And mine has Microsoft Word/2000/xp where yours has
OpenOffice.org 1.0

When I change mine to OpenOffice.org 1.0, it stays that way for that
session, but when I close oo, then open a new session, the default
is again Microsoft Word.

My solution is to keep the darn program on it's own desktop for my
work, but I've had to work on behavior modification somewhat (no
easy task for this hardhead) to either avoid opening oo with a click
on a file or change the default after the new session is open.

Like I said earlier, it's not a major issue. Just an annoyance, but
the list was quiet and I thought maybe an answer would pop up.

Thanks Robin and Kaj and others for your input.

[newbie] Mandrake 10 + Diva Server card problems

2004-06-04 Thread Jamie Kerwick
Hi there,

A collegue of mine is attempting to install use a Diva server (ISDN)
card using Mandrake 10 official.
The devices (3 of them) are found by Mandrake Device Manager, but we are
so far unable to load the Diva server drivers from their website
(www.eicon.com). As they didn't have any mandrake drivers available we
chose the latest Redhat ones.
However, they don't seem to work as the config script blurts out errors
about invalid module format when it tries to insmod them.

Has anyone succeeded in installing a diva server (ISND) card software
on Mandrake 10 ??
Any suggestions for alternative software to use ?? (the idea is to use
the card to send outgoing faxes)

Thanks,

Jamie

Hmm Interesting. If I look up MX information on your host I get:-

nslookup -query=mx -timeout=10 penabur.org

Non-authoritative answer:
penabur.orgmail exchanger = 10 server.bpkpenabur.or.id.

Which seems to be correct.
But if I ask for ALL information I get :-

nslookup -query=any -timeout=10 penabur.org

Non-authoritative answer:
penabur.orgnameserver = server.bpkpenabur.or.id.
penabur.orgnameserver = server3.penabur.org.

Note this does not show the MX records. If i do the same thing to my hostname
I get the MX record shown.

As to how to resolve it I have no idea. Perhaps you should speak to your

[newbie] Mandrake 10 and USB pens

2004-06-04 Thread Richard Gelling
Hi

I at present am running Suse 9.1 on my desktop PC. I am having a few
problems with it, which I don't seem to be able to solve. So I am hoping to
install Mandrake 10 Powerpack which I have ordered form Amazon. I was
wondering if anyone has had problems with USB pen drives with Mandrake using
the 2.6 kernel. Under Suse it either isn't recognised or it locks the
machine up completely. I have tried two makes of USB pen drive and both have
the same result. I have also had the same problem with two different PCs
both running Suse. This USB pen worked fine with Suse 9.0 and Slackware 9.1,
so I think the drive is ok. I think it something to do with the new submount
facility in the 2.6 kernel.

Also even with modifying the fstab file to do away with the submount on my
floppy drive I can only write to it as root, I have changed the permissions
etc. and have changed the fstab to what it was under Suse 9.0.

So I was wondering before I wipe my Hard drive again, could someone tell me
if they have had problems with USB Pen drives under Mandrake 10 ( 2.6 kernel
) and if they have been able to use the floppy drive as a normal user?

Also the only way to burn DVD's with K3b on Suse 9.1 is to umount the drive
manually from the command line first before starting K3b up, and then
mounting it again to use the disc. Which is a bit long winded (like this
post!).

I have installed Mandrake community on a laptop, but didn't get chance to
try the pen drive out. But I was impressed with the difference in speed
between Mandrake and Suse. So hopefully this problem doesn't occur with
Mandrake.

Thanks a lot
Richard G.

As far as I know, you can't open an Excel password-protected file in
OpenOffice. Get the sender to save the file again, without the

There are utilities to do this:

else you can surf through www.astalabista.com and see if there's a
free utility to take care of this issue...

I know it´s a long time since I tackled the subject. Unless I am wrong, those

[newbie] user problems with Mandrake Linux 9.1

2004-06-04 Thread Chris Hallgren
Hi
I intstalled Mandrake 9.1 on a Dell Optiplex G1 PC, and discovered that if
you add a user during installation, that is the only user who can login at
startup. The same problem occurs for me when I create a user as root in
Mandrake Control. How can I delete a user when I am the user and I login as
the user I want to delete. It logically does not work, but I want an open
login where any user can log in.

Anybody know how to reset my computer to get rid of this user or make it so
I can login as root into the graphical interface. I can log into another
virtual console (ctl/alt/fn for function key). The graphical virtual console
is f7.

When you create a user, that user normally is not active until you give
him a password. With the standard security settings, you can not have
an empty password. (This is what you would need to have an open account.)
What you can try is to log in as root at one of the virtual consoles,
and type passwd user name where user name is the name of the user
that you have created for an open loogon. Then just hit enter when
prompted for a password. I am not at my Linux box right now, so I can
not test it. It will ether give you a blank password, or exit without
changing the password. I don't know for sure. You can leave the other
user in place.

In 9.2, you can set things up so that you have a user automaticly logged
in to the GUI on boot. I would think you could do the same thing in
9.1. I don't know if this would do what you are after.

[newbie] Acrobat weblinks and Linux

2004-06-04 Thread Erylon Hines
Is there a way to configure Mozilla to open a link embedded in a *.pdf. If I
click on such a link I get a pop-up box offering to configure my browser, but
when I point to the mozilla executable I get another box that says
unsupported browser and telling me to install a browser that is supported.
It looks as though my choices are only Netscape or IE.

Any thoughts?

I confess I hadn't thought of that! It seems unlikely, partly as it's a

My desktop computer (an ancient Dell) won't power down properly. It goes
through the whole shutdown process, but the power stays on.

Worse, although I can hit the reset button to reboot, the power switch doesn't
work! Apparently, it's not a real (physical) power switch, it just sends a
signal to shut the power off, but Linux doesn't recognize this signal (or
something like that; it worked with Windoze, so I'm just guessing here). If I
want to power off, I have to actually pull the power plug!

Fortunately, I don't power off very often (usually only during lightning
storms or vacations), so I haven't bothered trying to fix it.

 Hi there,

The devices (3 of them) are found by Mandrake Device Manager, but we
are so far unable to load the Diva server drivers from their website
(www.eicon.com). As they didn't have any mandrake drivers available
we chose the latest Redhat ones.
However, they don't seem to work as the config script blurts out
errors about invalid module format when it tries to insmod them.

What script? Oh, I see, you are asked to run a script after installing
the rpm.

http://www.eicon.com/worldwide/products/MediaGateways/DivaServerforLinux.htm?dl=1regID=11401
mentions drivers for specific kernels from some distro's. Those drivers
are compiled for those kernels and will not work for other kernels.

You could try this:
-
If you require another distribution or kernel version, please fill in
the Requisition form. Your information will be submitted to a pre-sales
consultant who will be pleased to contact you to discuss your
commercial and technical requirements.
-

When you click the Diva Server for Linux - Version 7.0 download link it
says: Diva Server for Linux allows Eicon Diva Server adapters to be
used with the Linux operating system for SuSE, Red Hat or generic Linux
distribution and Source level RPM: Build Diva drivers or binary
RPM package for custom kernel from source code
Kernel 2.6.X Support so they suggest it is possible to compile the
drivers for the Mandrake kernel you are using. I haven't found any
source code but I probably didn't look good enough. If you can't find
it either then maybe you should contact their technical support. They
offer Linux drivers and some of their software is licenced under the
GPL so they seem a Linux and FOSS software friendly company :) Another
idea is to post to the Mandrake expert list.

http://www.eicon.com/worldwide/products/MediaGateways/DivaServerforLinux.htm
also metions isdn4linux ( http://www.isdn4linux.de/ ). I have no idea
if that would give you fax functonality.

Has anyone succeeded in installing a diva server (ISND) card
 software on Mandrake 10 ??
Any suggestions for alternative software to use ?? (the idea is to
use the card to send outgoing faxes)

http://www.eicon.com/worldwide/products/MediaGateways/DivaServerforLinux.htm
mentions isdn4linux ( http://www.isdn4linux.de/ ). I have no idea if
that would give you fax functionality.

An external (not USB) modem for a normal telephone line is the easiest
way to get sending faxes working.

Just curious, is this for your workplace?

 Thanks,

 Jamie

Second question - 9.1 ran just fine on this PC (600 MHz PIII, 512 MB
of memory) but once I'd installed 10.0 I noticed a lot of disk
thrashing going on. I ran up KDE system guard (Im using the version
of KDE which came with 10.0, and that's the only desktop I've
installed) to find that I'd only got a couple of megs of memory free,
 which explains the thrashing,

Linux uses all unused memory as a disc cache. It is perfectly normal for
memory usage to be 100% After all unused memory is 'wasted' memory.

Hmm. And a hard disk which is being *constantly* accessed is a
hard disk that is likely to have a short lifespan - assuming
you're not running server-class drives, which I'm not on my Linux
box. I wouldn't have noticed the memory usage had it not been for
the disk thrashing.

As far as servers that I've installed are concerned, I have MySQL,
ProFTP and Apache (that I'm aware of). I've also got Kylix on the PC,
but that doesn't have anything sitting in the background until you
actually run it. Anyway, what puzzles me is that I've got six copies
of httpd2, one with a login of root and five with a login of apache,

Perfectly normal. That is how more than 1 person at a time can hit your web
site.

OK, that's cleared that one up.

 six copies of mingetty,
Hit Ctl+Atl+F1 through to F6 and you will see text consoles. These are the
instances of mingetty. You could run fewer, but it would save virtually no
resources. Any idle process eventually gets swapped out to swap and consumes
insignificant resource.

OK.

 five of saslauthd,
Perfectly normal assuming you are actually using SASL (Possibly for email
authentication)

Not to my knowledge - unless it's by default.

 and a couple of other
programs which show two or three instances. Can anyone tell me
whether the footprint of 10.0 with KDE really is this large, or has
something gone wrong with the update process?

No its all normal. Do not worry about it.

I'm worried about any system that shows constant disk access
while idle.

If there are services you have installed but do not use, then by all means
turn them off or uninstall them. The only service I would recommend disabling
is tmdns (Tiny DNS server) which is more trouble than it is worth and screws
up lots of peoples net connection.

The net connection, at least, is working just fine.

As above, don't underestimate my ignorance of Linux. I used to write
Fortran programs under some variant of Unix 25 years ago, and that's
about the extent of my knowledge of Unix/Linux systems. Since then
all my PC work has been with Billy G's offerings. At the moment, I
know about enough of Mandrake to navigate round the file system and
 to fire up Kylix.

Just enough knowledge to be dangerous ;-)

Not really - the dangerous ones are those who know nothing but
think they know something. I know the dangers of learning a new
operating system from scratch, I've been through it too many
times. :-( Some have been Unix-like, e.g. Hewlett-Packard's RTE-6
and RTE-A, but it's all buried by time under a mountain of
Windows and VAX/VMS.

Someone on this list used to have a good signature :-
If your Linux system is not broken, you are not trying hard enough!

Have fun

No guarantees. ;-) I've really not that much interest in hacking
around in the depths of the system, all I'm after is to learn
enough to develop the same sort of software under Linux as I
currently do under Windows. Had it not been for Borland's Kylix,
I'd not even bother looking at Linux. In any case, I just don't
like an OS that tries to beat hard drives into an early grave.

Thanks for the info, but I'm still not convinced. If this
constant disk access really is normal for a Linux system, I'm
going to buy shares in some hard drive manufacturers!

Brian.

have the same result. I have also had the same problem with two different
PCs both running Suse. This USB pen worked fine with Suse 9.0 and Slackware
9.1, so I think the drive is ok. I think it something to do with the new
submount facility in the 2.6 kernel.

Also even with modifying the fstab file to do away with the submount on my
floppy drive I can only write to it as root, I have changed the permissions
etc. and have changed the fstab to what it was under Suse 9.0.

So I was wondering before I wipe my Hard drive again, could someone tell me
if they have had problems with USB Pen drives under Mandrake 10 ( 2.6
kernel ) and if they have been able to use the floppy drive as a normal
 user?

Also the only way to burn DVD's with K3b on Suse 9.1 is to umount the drive
manually from the command line first before starting K3b up, and then
mounting it again to use the disc. Which is a bit long winded (like this
 post!).

I have installed Mandrake community on a laptop, but didn't get chance to
try the pen drive out. But I was impressed with the difference in speed
between Mandrake and Suse. So hopefully this problem doesn't occur with
 Mandrake.
