[newbie] Problems with 10.1 and wireless (ipw2100 - intel centrino)
Hi all, sorry if I bother you with an old topic but so fare I haven't found anything which really helped me with my problem in the mailing list. I have an Dell Inspiron 510m with a Pentium M. The PC is fine apart for the wireless. 10.1 detects my card but apparently I had to download and install the firmware of the card as well and now firmware and card are installed, it's detected but I can't use it. Frist thing which is strange is the output for ifconfig: [EMAIL PROTECTED] minos]# ifconfig eth0 Protokoll:Ethernet Hardware Adresse 00:0D:56:E0:61:15 inet6 Adresse: fe80::20d:56ff:fee0:6115/64 Gültigkeitsbereich:Verbindung UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:378 (378.0 b) Interrupt:11 Basisadresse:0x5000 loProtokoll:Lokale Schleife inet Adresse:127.0.0.1 Maske:255.0.0.0 inet6 Adresse: ::1/128 Gültigkeitsbereich:Maschine UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:182 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:182 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:0 RX bytes:11462 (11.1 Kb) TX bytes:11462 (11.1 Kb) No wireless... but if I type ifconfig eth1 I get the wireless card: [EMAIL PROTECTED] minos]# ifconfig eth1 eth1 Protokoll:UNSPEC Hardware Adresse 42-4F-C0-00-24-85-04-30-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) In my opinion this is strange... You could also configure it with iwconfig from the command line. derek Hi Derek Well... I did have problems with the CDs when I installed 10.1 thus I installed most of it with urpmi thus I don't know what packet I need since I would install it with urpmi... But I have a config tool for wireless. When I set up a new network connection, I have wireless as an option but even though I tried to set it up that way I always end at the option manual or automatic setup, no matter which option I choose. The problem with ifconfig in the command line is that it doesn't show eth1. I only get eth1 when I type ifconfig eth1... Alex Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? For 10.1 you need the firmware version 0.54. Once that was installed in the right place, I could go past the point of choosing between manual or automatic and properly set up the device. However with the version 0.54 (wich is the one included in 10.1 Community) i could not get encyption to work, I had to upgrade to 0.55. sebastian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Is there another product (linux based) that I can use instead of Ghost (bear in mind it has two ntfs partitions on it as well. Thanks Alan What I would do in a situation like this: 1)Create the needed partitions on the new disk --- let's assume it's /dev/hdb and the partions are similar to /dev/hda ..only bigger, using fdisk or cfdiskand make those active or bootable that need to be. 2)unmounting all mounted partitions except / from which you're running...Optionally you can do telinit 1 as su/root which will achieve the same. 3) mount the partitions you want to copy to, on ready made directories in /mnt (i.e. /mnt/disk2, /mnt/disk3, etc..) 4)Then copy all the partitions to hdb going into the toplevel of each partition (excepting /, the root partition) and type (as su/root): find . -xdev | cpio -padm /mnt/diskx (where x is the partition/mount n° needed) 5)Get some coffee as that'll take a while;) 6)reboot using a liveCD or mandrake rescue mode i.e. run in ram. 7)mount your old root partition (/) as well as your new one some where on /mnt/ (i.e. /mnt/oldroot /mnt/newroot° 8)cd into /mnt/oldroot: cd /mnt/oldroot and repeat the find . -xdev | cpio -padm /mnt/newroot (not the quotes and mind the . !) 9)Drink some more coffee and edit /mnt/newroot/etc/lilo.conf and /mnt/newroot/etc/fstab appropiately ...then edit /mnt/oldroot/etc/lilo.conf and add a new entry there called linux-new (or such) pointing to your newroot partition (this way you can back out if something goes wrong!) 10)reboot into your old system (there is a way of running lilo on a not running / , but I never looked how) and run lilo, and reboot again ;( where you now should see linux-new as an added option in your lilo bootmenu.and boot into that. 11) If all goes well you can then remove/delete your old hda partitions physically and from lilo.conf Bear in mind that I've never done this with a ntfs or vfat partition so (triple)check those thouroughly before removing/deleting the old stuff!!! -- Good luck, HarM Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? On Monday 25 October 2004 14:02, Alan Rolfe wrote: Okay bug stuff up... What does a lilo time stamp error mean? i can't boot now. I think that means that the time stamp on the boot.* file is incorrect for what lilo expects the time stamp to be. This could mean that you issued the lilo command to write the MBR at a later or earlier time than is shown on the timestamp of that file. If you copied a partition over and then reran the lilo command or copied the file with a newer write date than lilo expects, it should give you the error. One way to fix this is to boot with the Linux cd into rescue mode and tell it to mount your partitions under /mnt and then reinstall Lilo which should pick up the configuration again, rewrite the mbr and you should then be able to reboot back into Linux or whatever is allowed under lilo. -- Bryan Phinney Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] HELP - Absolutely cannot update
This Linux newbie needs help!!! No matter how many times I've tried over the last few weeks, I have not been able to update with Mandrake 10.1. I always get the message: It is impossible to retreive the list of new packages from the media 'update source.' Either the update media is misconfigured, and in this case you shouldd use the software media manager to remove it and re-add it in order to reconfigure it, either it is currently unreachable and you should retry later. It also reports trying to download '... which doesn't seem like a viable name to me. Thing is, I think I'm missing something. In my media manager, I don't HAVE an update source. I have the 3 installation cd's listed and main, contrib, and plf. That's all. No media called updates. I have done the urpmi 3 steps thing and have searched far and wide over the internet, but I cannot find a solution to this problem. To obtain the updates, instead of using the GUI you must use urpmi. Open a root terminal, give the following command: urpmi.update -a --no-md5sum urpmi --auto-select This will update all your media, and show you a list of updated versions of any packages you have installed. -- Regards Margot *-*-*-* Sent using Mozilla on a 100% Microsoft-Free Computer Registered Linux User 307617 http://counter.li.org Mandrakelinux release 10.1 (Community) for i586 kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk ~~~ Computer Science is the only discipline in which we view adding a new wing to a building as being maintenance -- Jim Horning ~~~ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? And second, even if I screwed it up from the commandline, I'm sure K3b would do it correctly when I select the Verify data option. But it always comes up wrong, too. I will second Margot's words, but also add that another problem can be timeouts from the server you are connecting to. I always connect to the server with Konqeror before I add it to my sources, and I avoid .edu sites as they seem to shut down sites on the weekends. And I also use the lists at mandrakeclub, as a link to the files is provided, and I can easily check the speed of the server. [newbie] Kernel update source/binary mismatch
I never got a sympa confirm request for this the first time, and it doesn't seem to have come through the list, so here it is again: This past Friday (Oct. 22) I decided it was time to update my Mdk 10.0 system, so I did the usual commands as root: # urpmi.update -a # urpmi --auto-select I noticed that one of the updates selected was kernel-source-2.6.3-19mdk. But there was no corresponding kernel-2.6.3.19mdk package. I checked in /boot and the rpm database, in case I had gotten the binary without the source in a previous update. But the latest kernel binary I have installed is kernel-2.6.3.16mdk (and that was back on Aug. 13). This is the kernel that I'm currently booting with: # uname -r 2.6.3-16mdk In case the kernel binary was a bit late arriving, I did the same urpmi commands today, and I just get Everything already installed. In case auto-select was somehow missing it, I also did this: # urpmi kernel Everything already installed Finally, I did the following: # urpmi kernel-2.6.3.19 ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/official/updates/ 10.0/RPMS/./kernel-2.6.3.19mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm ... And now it's downloading the new kernel binary! What's up with that? auto-select doesn't work with kernel binaries, but it does with kernel source? Shouldn't the two always be kept in sync? And why doesn't urpmi kernel find the latest version of the kernel? Why should I have to specify which version I want? Doing a little checking, I found out that one of my contacts had gotten a virus, and of course it was spoofing everything. What happens is, the virus raids their address book, and randomly sends out viruses to everyone in that address book, and it picks a random user from the address book to spoof from. It took all of about 30 seconds to figure out where it was coming from - I ended up going over to her office and cleaning up the system, and the emails disappeared. Funny how that works... How can you know exactly who it came from? I realize that such mostly comes from infected windoze boxes, and I'm thinking that someone out there who has my email in their address book has a virus which has been spoofing my address, like the one Tom Karen Pino got.
