[newbie] Problems with 10.1 and wireless (ipw2100 - intel centrino)

Hi all,

sorry if I bother you with an old topic but so fare I haven't found
anything which really helped me with my problem in the mailing list.

I have an Dell Inspiron 510m with a Pentium M. The PC is fine apart for
the wireless. 10.1 detects my card but apparently I had to download and
install the firmware of the card as well and now firmware and card are
installed, it's detected but I can't use it.

Frist thing which is strange is the output for ifconfig:

No wireless... but if I type ifconfig eth1 I get the wireless card:

In my opinion this is strange...

The card is installed since I get this output under dmesg:

You need to install the wireless-tools package from your CD and then run 
through the network connection Wizard in Mandrake Control Centre and 
configure it as a wireless connection.

You could also configure it with iwconfig from the command line.

what have you done so far to install mandrake? 

 Well one option would be to create a directory, name it what you
 like, example would be Local_software. Copy your rpms to that
 directory. Then in terminal window as root type drakrpm-edit-media
 without quotes and add that directory as local media.
 Then you can in terminal urpmi name_of_package or use the
 graphical installer drakrpm
 (which may be easier if your new to linux) to install the rpms you like.

It is here...
The gigabit lan uses the sk98lin driver and the mcp network lan uses the 
forcedeth driver.
Hope this helps.
Try using the control center/ hardware part and use the drivers mentioned 
above.

Well... I did have problems with the CDs when I installed 10.1 thus I
installed most of it with urpmi thus I don't know what packet I need
since I would install it with urpmi...

But I have a config tool for wireless. When I set up a new network
connection, I have wireless as an option but even though I tried to set
it up that way I always end at the option manual or automatic setup,
no matter which option I choose.

The problem with ifconfig in the command line is that it doesn't show
eth1. I only get eth1 when I type ifconfig eth1...

urpmi wireless-tools

You can set it up with iwconfig from the command line.
See 'man iwconfig'

I am not sure if it is still the case, but the ipw2100 driver used to not work

I didn't get the ipw2100 driver version 0.54 to work with encryption. 0.54
is the version included with 10.1 CE.
However by uninstalling the 0.54 completely from the kernel and installing
0.55 i got encryption working.

Be carefull however als 0.55 needs a different firmware than 0.54

This sounds like you didn't install the firmware properly. For 10.1 you need
the firmware version 0.54. Once that was installed in the right place, I
could go past the point of choosing between manual or automatic and
properly set up the device. However with the version 0.54 (wich is the one
included in 10.1 Community) i could not get encyption to work, I had to
upgrade to 0.55.

[newbie] Comparing md5sums in 10.0

When I burn a CD in MDK 10.0 from the commandline or with K3b,
then compare the md5sums of the iso file and /dev/hdc, they are
_always_ different, even if the CD works fine. Is there something
weird with 10.0, or is this a subtle sign of burner problems to
come, or what?

I want to upgrade my 120gb Hard disk to a 160gb Hard disk.
I tried to use norton ghost but the minute it starts on my root partition  
it stops. How can I check the integrity of my disk and it's
partition?

Is there another product (linux based) that I can use instead of Ghost  
(bear in mind it has two ntfs partitions on it as well.

I'd rather say it's something with your cd burner. I'm using 10.0off and have no 
problems when comparing md5sums of iso and cd.

When burn to disc, the md5sums include the lead in and lead out and so 
will inevitably result in different md5sums.

The trick is to get it to md5sum the data on the disc only.

You could check out partimage. It is either on freshmeat or sourceforge,
I think.

There is never a problem eith any of this when I use K3b however I did have to 
slow down my burn speed to 4X

Partimage is a linux clone of Partition Magic, Paragon Hard Drive manager and 
other types of partition manager tools.

One really good way to handle this is to download a copy of System Rescue Live 
CD from http://sysresccd.org  burn the ISO to CD and boot up using the CD.  
That way, none of the hard drive partitions start out as active and you 
should be able to copy all the partitions from one hard drive directly to the 
next hard drive, intact and then just boot from either one after it is 
connected at the same physical location.

I think that it even supports copying entire NTFS partitions, it just doesn't 
allow you to write to NTFS partitions directly without loading up 
CaptiveNTFS.

What I would do in a situation like this:

1)Create the needed partitions on the new disk --- let's assume it's /dev/hdb 
and the partions are similar to /dev/hda ..only bigger, using fdisk or 
cfdiskand make those active or bootable that need to be.

2)unmounting all mounted partitions except / from which you're 
running...Optionally you can do telinit 1 as su/root which will achieve the 
same.

3) mount the partitions you want to copy to, on ready made directories in /mnt 
(i.e. /mnt/disk2, /mnt/disk3, etc..) 

4)Then copy all the partitions to hdb going into the toplevel of each 
partition (excepting /, the root partition) and type (as su/root): find . 
-xdev | cpio -padm /mnt/diskx  (where x is the partition/mount n° needed)

5)Get some coffee as that'll take a while;)

6)reboot using a liveCD or mandrake rescue mode i.e. run in ram.

7)mount your old root partition (/) as well as your new one some where 
on /mnt/ (i.e. /mnt/oldroot /mnt/newroot°

8)cd into /mnt/oldroot: cd /mnt/oldroot and repeat the find . -xdev | cpio 
-padm /mnt/newroot (not the quotes and mind the . !)

9)Drink some more coffee and edit /mnt/newroot/etc/lilo.conf 
and /mnt/newroot/etc/fstab appropiately ...then 
edit /mnt/oldroot/etc/lilo.conf and add a new entry there called linux-new 
(or such) pointing to your newroot partition (this way you can back out if 
something goes wrong!)

10)reboot into your old system (there is a way of running lilo on a not 
running / , but I never looked how) and run lilo, and reboot again ;( where 
you now should see linux-new as an added option in your lilo 
bootmenu.and boot into that.

11) If all goes well you can then remove/delete your old hda partitions 
physically and from lilo.conf

Bear in mind that I've never done this with a ntfs or vfat partition so 
(triple)check those thouroughly before removing/deleting the old stuff!!!

[newbie] Nebula DigiTV

Does this digital TV card work with Linux 10?  When I use the TV Card control 
tool in Manrake Control Centre I select Nebula DigiTV in the card model area 
and Auto-detect in the tuner type area.  When it starts tuning a console 
window pops up and then disappears after about 1 second.

Is there any way of finding what my problem is?

I think that means that the time stamp on the boot.* file is incorrect for 
what lilo expects the time stamp to be.  This could mean that you issued the 
lilo command to write the MBR at a later or earlier time than is shown on the 
timestamp of that file.  If you copied a partition over and then reran the 
lilo command or copied the file with a newer write date than lilo expects, it 
should give you the error.  One way to fix this is to boot with the Linux cd 
into rescue mode and tell it to mount your partitions under /mnt and then 
reinstall  Lilo which should pick up the configuration again, rewrite the mbr 
and you should then be able to reboot back into Linux or whatever is allowed 
under lilo.

I am, on 10.0 Official with no problems: vmware workstation 4.5.2-8848.
You have to run the configuration tool vmware-config.pl to compile the
plugin modules for the new kernel (and for every bugfix kernel release
subsequently) but this is dead easy.  I haven't tried it on 10.1 CE yet.

Not at all.
When burn to disc, the md5sums include the lead in and lead out and so
will inevitably result in different md5sums.
The trick is to get it to md5sum the data on the disc only.

slow down my burn speed to 4X

It works also on 10.1. The difference is though that each time you have 
to compile the plugin modules again, which has to do with udev. I've 
found a workaround somewhere; you have to place  the following lines in 
de vmware script in /etc/rc.d/initd/vmware after line 811 and before the 
text:# See how we were called:

# Place VMware vmnet nodes for UDEV
if [ ! -c /dev/vmmon ]; then
   mknod -m 600 /dev/vmmon c 10 165
fi

seems pretty cool.. it has a heap of partition tools and stuff on it as

[newbie] HELP - Absolutely cannot update

This Linux newbie needs help!!!

No matter how many times I've tried over the last few weeks, I have not
been able to update with Mandrake 10.1.  I always get the message:

It is impossible to retreive the list of new packages from the media
'update source.'  Either the update media is misconfigured, and in this
case you shouldd use the software media manager to remove it and re-add
it in order to reconfigure it, either it is currently unreachable and
you should retry later.

It also reports trying to download '...  which doesn't seem like a
viable name to me.

Thing is, I think I'm missing something.  In my media manager, I don't
HAVE an update source.  I have the 3 installation cd's listed and
main, contrib, and plf.  That's all.  No media called updates.

I have done the urpmi 3 steps thing and have searched far and wide over
the internet, but I cannot find a solution to this problem.

Can someone help?

Community versions of Mandrake do not have updates or update 
source media - the updates are contained in the media which you 
have already added as sources.

To obtain the updates, instead of using the GUI you must use urpmi.
Open a root terminal,  give the following command:
urpmi.update -a --no-md5sum  urpmi --auto-select
This will update all your media, and show you a list of updated 
versions of any packages you have installed.

I can't answer that..  as I've booted from it, and have played in the 
menu's abit.. but I've not yet written anything to disk.

I suspect that the click and clone thing is just a direct RAW copy. 
meaning you'd have to resize the partitions yourself later.

I don't think that's the case for two reasons. First, I've always
used this method before, and it's always worked. And second, even
if I screwed it up from the commandline, I'm sure K3b would do it
correctly when I select the Verify data option. But it always
comes up wrong, too. 

One other thing I considered: crappy media. And make no mistake,
I'm using Ritek--the crappiest, most god-awful media on planet.
But when I burned to a RW this morning, I had the same problem
(burning with K3b, with verification checked).

What do you do to verify discs?

I've been burning at 8x, but dropping to 4x is a good idea. I'll give
that a shot.

 10.0off and have no problems when comparing md5sums of iso and
 cd.

If your burner is modern, 8x is not particularly fast.
I doubt it is the cause.

I am using konquerer to move stuff from one hard disk to another.
Konquerer reports on 2.5MB/s. Shouldn´t this be faster?
Seems very slow to me.
Any advice will be appreciated

Alan,

If you're trying to clone disks with konqueror you're going to get into a 
right mess as a lot of inconsistancies are going to show up in respect to 
ownership and RW permissions to files and links.

On top, take care that your don't copy all the mounted mountpoints and their 
underlying files toothat wouldn't save much diskspace, would it.

Use the commands I gave you in a prior answer to eliminate those risksor 
if you're sure there's no (mounted) mount points or hardlinks: cp -ax 
originalfile-name copiedfile-name.
I've found the combined find and cpio method the only 100% sure way.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 3800. Both 10.0 Official and 10.1 Community work 
well on it. A few glitches, most notably with a wireless pcmcia card (got it 
working in 10.0, but only with encryption disabled, and with some very weird 
glitches, like trashing of my default system font; haven't had time to try 
yet with 10.1). Also, I only have 64MB memory, which is not enough to run KDE 
on, so it thrashes badly (and I haven't had time to investigate a more memory 
friendly window mangler).

Strangely though, MandrakeMove does not work on it. It fails during booting (I 
forget the exact symptoms). It's not the cd, because I can boot it fine on a 
Compaq Armada M700 laptop, and a Dell Dimension XPS R400 desktop. I can also 
boot Knoppix on the Inspiron.

I will second Margot's words, but also add that another problem can be 
timeouts from the server you are connecting to.

I always connect to the server with Konqeror before I add it to my sources, 
and I avoid .edu sites as they seem to shut down sites on the weekends.

And I also use the lists at mandrakeclub, as a link to the files is provided, 
and I can easily check the speed of the server.

[newbie] Kernel update source/binary mismatch

I never got a sympa confirm request for this the first time, and it doesn't 
seem to have come through the list, so here it is again:

This past Friday (Oct. 22) I decided it was time to update my Mdk 10.0
 system, so I did the usual commands as root:

# urpmi.update -a
# urpmi --auto-select

I noticed that one of the updates selected was kernel-source-2.6.3-19mdk. But
there was no corresponding kernel-2.6.3.19mdk package.

I checked in /boot and the rpm database, in case I had gotten the binary
without the source in a previous update. But the latest kernel binary I have
installed is kernel-2.6.3.16mdk (and that was back on Aug. 13). This is the
kernel that I'm currently booting with:

# uname -r
2.6.3-16mdk

In case the kernel binary was a bit late arriving, I did the same urpmi
commands today, and I just get Everything already installed. In case
auto-select was somehow missing it, I also did this:

# urpmi kernel
Everything already installed

Finally, I did the following:

# urpmi kernel-2.6.3.19

   
 ftp://ftp.proxad.net/pub/Distributions_Linux/Mandrakelinux/official/updates/
10.0/RPMS/./kernel-2.6.3.19mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm ...

And now it's downloading the new kernel binary! What's up with that?
auto-select doesn't work with kernel binaries, but it does with kernel
source? Shouldn't the two always be kept in sync? And why doesn't urpmi
kernel find the latest version of the kernel? Why should I have to specify
which version I want? Very strange.

most times, yes, one would want them in sync if your intent is to build 
modules for your binary kernel

urpmi --fuzzy kernel will return a list, if urpmi kernel doesn't

All binary kernel packages have unique names, so you can have more than 
one installed at a time. (Can be handy if your new kernel won't boot your 
system for some reason).

And, if there are any updates to be had but there are dependency issues, 
urpmi will ask if it can install what's needed and then go and do the 
download/update for you all automagically.  I've got this in a script file 
that cron runs every day.

[newbie] module removal

I've installed the 10.1 Community and I tried to
install nVidia driver. It displays a warning about
incompatibility with rivafb driver module (the kernel
is set to run with). I don't have a Riva. 
How could I remove the rivafb module from the kernel?

Being a complete newbie at this, it appears that shorewall is blocking
ALL pings. Exactly how should I enable bidirectional pings (and
everything else for that matter) within my local network, and still
block only those pings coming from outside, (from the Internet)? I've

ccommand to use, or where to put it to make it permanent.
