Hi Travis,
I'm using ISC's Bind and dhcpd. That way the dhcp server can dynamically
update the dns records. No need to setup each client.

[newbie] nis not working

2004-11-01 Thread Russell W. Behne
I've been trying to get nis working on my home network. I'm to the point
where both hosts can mount /home and other directories from the server,
but users still can't log in. In
http://rampex.ihep.su/Linux/linux_howto/html/tutorials/NIS-HOWTO-9.html
it says that If everything is fine (as it should be), you should be able
to verify your installation with a few simple commands. Assuming, for
example, your passwd file is being supplied by NIS, the command ``ypcat
passwd'' should give you the contents of your NIS passwd file. But wwhen
I tried it here's what I got:

# ypcat passwd
No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Internal NIS error

Irritably, the howto doesn't say what to do when ypcat passwd doesn't
work. Other things I've tried (and the ressults):

# /etc/init.d/ypserv status
ypserv (pid 11126) is running...

I found this line in the log:
ypserv[11126]: refused connect from 67.21.58.221:33083 to
procedure ypproc_domain_nonack (fleabite,;0)

Note that 67.21.58.221 is the dynamic IP assigned by my ISP. Is there a
way to get the server to use it's static IP, 192.168.18.1? Is this part
of the problem? I don't know.

The 2 hosts are 192.168.18.11 and 192.168.18.12, and I can ping them,
they can ping the server, and I can telnet into them from the server
wiith no problem (I set up 1 user account just for this) and then su to
root.

From the server:
# ypcat passwd
No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Internal NIS error

From either of the hosts:
# ypcat passwd
No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Can't bind to server which
serves this domain

I'm getting too burned out to think. Can someone help?

The usual reason is that there are many websites which use the browser id
string to determine if you are using IE or not; if you aren't, you are denied
access. There are also others which restrict access to either IE or Netscape.
Now, if you are 100 per cent linux, you are left with three choices: Lie to
them, go somewhere else, or install Windows. Well, it turns out that the
first choice is often quite effective because many other browsers can access
many of those sites with no problems at all. Now -- who's the bigger liar
here? Me, or the MS guy who convinced the website admin that he would have
all sorts of problems if he allowed non-MS browsers to access his website?
Banks, in particular, are among the worst offenders in this regard (but there
are lots of other sites guilty of the same stupidity). Not to be all
doom-and-gloom, I saw a report on the web within the past few days that there
is a growing trend in the Windows community to move away from the crap MS
browsers to Firefox and Mozilla. Perhaps that will force some of those
dullhead webmins to rethink their stance.

2 reasons
# 1 a MLS real estate web site that seems to do nothing but say that it only
works with Internet Exployter

#2 as a further troubleshooting measure in trying to solve my DSL problems
with my local ISP.

I have tried everything suggested by the folks here and LOTS of other things.
1 thing that crossed my mind is that perhaps they have a server with a virus
that is meant to screw up service for linux machines or perhaps something
from the evil empire installed in 1 of their servers that is meant to screw
up linux users. Just a WAG on my part. What the heck I have tried
everything else.

Welcome to the world
You will need a Pentium class processor at least 200 mhz
as to how much disk space 12 to 20 Gb should do fine
You will need to either download mandrake (long job even with dsl or you can
get the CDs from cheapbytes
http://cart.cheapbytes.com/cgi-bin/cart
for a *very* Nominal price mostly you will have to put up with us ;-)

The User Agent Switcher in Firefox allows you to define your own string.

No go, we've had that mentioned a couple times. I tried the same
thing. While it may show in your preferences that it's set to "", when
you actually look at the headers of messages you send to the list (hit
the more options link at the top of your message) you'll see that
gmail is still putting your own email address as the reply-to. I
thought the same thing, and I had about half a dozen people reply to
me that I'd been wrong, and saw as much for myself when I looked at my
own headers.

[newbie] Problem with Firefox & Kmail

2004-11-01 Thread Mike
Hello,

I am using Mandrake Linux 10, Firefox v. 1.0 is installed as my default
browser, Kmail is my default email client.

When I click on a web link in Kmail, Firefox launches but opens to a local
version of the file (cached). Here's an example of what happens when I click
on a link to google:

www.google.com

and this is what opens in Firefox:

file:///var/tmp/kdecache-user/krun/2159.0.google

I don't get the website, I get a locally stored version of the site and no
links from the site work.

It happens every time with every web link. The only way to open the web page
is to copy the link and paste it into the address bar of Firefox. I never had
this problem when I was using Opera as my default browser. It always opened
the proper web page whenever a link was clicked. What's going on with Firefox
and how do I correct this problem?

Any help resolving this problem is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

But it is not possible to boot the system with its own kernel.Any idea?ThanksAli

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work.. Also, I had to press Escape to
leave the "graphical" LILO menu before being able to write the line "linux
noapic noacpi". I suppose that is normal... (?)

I have an Intel Pentium 800 MHz with PhoenixBIOS (v.4.06) and 128 MB RAM.
The chipset is a "Intel 800 series" (yeah, I admit - haven't got a clue what
that means... ;-) ). Could it perhaps be my Voodoo 4 graphics card causing
the problems?
I'm also running Windows 2000 on another partition, and that works great.

Many thanks HJ,

/dev/hda8 /var ext3 noatime 1 2
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

The partition I wanted to resized was /dev/hda10 /data
It should be 7GB (2GB + 5GB extra from unpartition space), but, in reality
it's listed only 2GB (the original size).

Well, anyway, I decided to clean-install my notebook from 9.2 to 10.1CE, while
preserving /home to retain my emails and personal settings. And the result is
amazing. Even my KDE session is preserved! There was a glitch though when the
quick launch icon generated an error: "Klaunch can't start application from
DCOP" (something like that), but after rebooting it was fine again.

It's 2am now and I'm tired, but I'm very happy. Actually the installation
process only took 20 minutes, the previous 3 hours were for backing up data
and email to my desktop pc.

I love you, Mandrake :)
Thanks.

At the lilo log on screen try hitting Esc, and then at the prompt enter
linux noapic noacpi
That will try to boot with those features disabled.
If that works come back and we can show you how to make the change permanent.

If it does not work tell us what mobo/CPU/chipset you are using.

The User Agent Switcher in Firefox allows you to define your own string.
Doesn't that do what you need?

[newbie] User Agent

2004-11-01 Thread Marc
Does anyone here know how to modify the user agent ID in any of the popular
browsers, Mozilla, Opera, Firefox or Konqueror to make things appear that I
am using a Windoze machine running IE . I know that in most Linux browsere
there is a quick easy way to change it in preferances but that seems to still
leave some tell tale evidance at the end of the user agent string. I need to
change things to appear EXACTLY as a windoze machine would.

Did you try exiting from all konqueror instances first?

You're _not_ using supermount. 'auto' in your fstab for this
device means auto file system detection, not auto mount.
Somethin is holding on to the device. Run 'lsof /mnt/cdrom' to
find out. (You might have to 'urpmi lsof' first). If lsof just
returns to a prompt, nothin is using /mnt/cdrom at that time.

FWIW, I don't remember when 'magicdev' began, or whether 10.0
used it. See if '/usr/bin/magicdev' is present by running
'which magicdev'. I've had some intermittent problems with CD
drives being 'busy', usually after somethin like ripping a DVD
with dvd:rip. 'fam' (an xinitd process) is most often the
culprit. Since it's not a separate service, you'll need to kill
it's pid. It will still run again 'on request'.

I hate to say it, but sometimes only a reboot will free the CD
drive. Magic device in 10.1 is better, but still has occasional
glitches like yours.

remeber his root password. Any way he can retrieve it?
TIA
Maryse

[newbie] Configuring X-windows

2004-11-01 Thread amalasingh

Hello,

I am having problem in setting up X-windows under Mandrake Linux 10.0.
My mouse blur and leave trail. The graphics display is pretty slow.
Could be because I couldnt set the refresh rates for the monitor
correctly.

But surprisingly the mandrake linux installation gui display was fantastic.
Can I get the configuration details from installation logs. I cant believe
how mandrake installation doesnt look for set up for gui while x-windows
is so stupid in setting up the same.

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Partition resized but remains

Hi guys,
I have a spare space on my hdd, so I resized one of my partition (it's on the
last partition hda10). Using MCC, I can resized it with no problem, formatted
it, the fstab also modified. But, after reboot, I noticed that the free space
in that partition is still in the old one (2GB, whereas should be 7GB).
Any idea what I'm missing?
Thanks.
