What works is: linux acpi=off Once it boots add acpi=off to lilo. After I got it working I did a clean install. I found out that if you scroll down when you get to the final setup screen there is an entry for boot. Unchecking the acpi enabled button, solves the problem. I wi ask question after I have tried a few things but if anyone has any words of wisdom they will be welcome :-) Does anyone know if having acpi of effects wireless? Pat Hi Pat, I highly recommend that you recompile your Kernel 2.6.8.x and you'll be able to get acpi working. It's important to have it working so that your fan doesn't have to work so hard. You'll be able to turn down your clock speed to extend battery life. Which chipset is your wifi? I've used Ndiswrapper to get my wifi working on my ze4560us but it loses connectivity when I go beyond 10 feet. In windows its range is around 60 feet. I'm still trying to solve the instability of Ndiswrapper. When compiling that kernel, say No to apic. Good luck, Sevatio Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Sounds similar to my Compaq 2100's issues. I was able to setup/load a custom DSDT, which solved the ACPI and related problems. (Although prism54 still doesn't work as I hit the usual, mfg changed internals but kept the same product number. Ndiswrapper works for me, from sourceforge.) Some help on setting up a DSDT: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/HardwareHowTo#ACPI_Cust om_DSDT HTH, -- Stew Benedict Mandrakesoft Tried ndiswrapper had some problems. Am working on using the on board acx100_pci. If it doesn't work I will try it again. thanks for the acpi tip I will make that my next project. Currently I am trying the linuxant package and at least it fires up the card and lets me confgure it Once I get it running I will try an open source solution Thanks, Pat Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Many thanks, James Hill Of course you can find ISO for Mandrake 10.0 - for example on this mirror: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandrakelinux/official/iso/10.0/i586/ There are ISOs for 3 CDs of the Mandrake 10.0 Official Edition (which are basically Community Edition with some bugfixes). If you insist on using Community Edition instead of Official Edition, you can use this command as root to add this mirror as the source of your packages: # urpmi.addmedia Your_name_of_web_source ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandrakelinux/devel/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/ with ../base/hdlist.cz You can use synthesis.hdlist.cz instead of 22.4 MB hdlist.cz file (synthesis.hdlist.cz is much smaller file - but you lose some details of packages such as list of file names), and, of course, your preferred mirror instead of ftp.gwdg.de (there is a list on the Mandrake's site). Do wine is a separate installer? do i have to download it from where? if it is included in the CD then how to install/configure it? hope you can help me.. thanks... You have to install wine by urpmi or rpmdrake (you can access the latter through Mandrake Control Center) by 'urpmi wine' command (or picking wine package in the rpmdrake - you can easily search for wine there). WINE is part of basic Mandrake package, so it should be found on your CDs (or DVD). WINE (WINE Is Not Emulator) does not emulate the entire Win32 system - it only adds Win32 API (Application Programming Interface) to the programs to let them work. It's far from being complete, and it requires in many cases manual fiddling with WINE config files (which can be found in ~/.wine directory), but if it works, it usually works as fast as in Windows. Hi Greg, long time no see :) This is the info: [EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost [EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# hostname centrino.linux.home And, tinydns is not installed. While it is possible to use Wine to run **some** Windows applications in Linux it is not straightforward, and you are not likely to succeed on your first day as a Linux user. Why not try out some Linux applications? There are some great ones on your CDs Ask if you want some tips on which apps to use. If you have some specialised need to run specific Windows apps, then checkout www.codeweavers.com for a version of Wine which makes office type Windows apps easy to install for a newbie. (It costs money), or if gaming is your thing go to www.transgaming.com for a version of Wine optimised for **certain** Windows games. You do realise that Microsoft programs won't work under Linux unless you use some sort of windows emulator like Wine don't you? IIRC I could start in failsafe, and from there I could change the monitor setup. I think it was trying to start in 24-bit mode, but it worked perfectly in 16-bit mode. I had to do this twice, though, because the first time I ran 'test' which seemed to bork things. The second time I just saved the settings without testing and it accepted them. I've had no problems at all since then. Anne -- Registered Linux User No.293302 Have you visited http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org yet? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
