HP ze4325us Athlon chip, Ali chipset, Radeon video. UNknown

This machine installed 10.0 great. Under 10.1 installs and freezes on

reboot. I tried noapic noalpic noacpi nodma and none worked. What
works is:

linux acpi=off
Once it boots add acpi=off to lilo.
After I got it working I did a clean install. I found out that if you
scroll down when you get to the final setup screen there is an entry
for boot. Unchecking the acpi enabled button, solves the problem.

Still cannot get a wireless card to work. It is recognized but does
not seem to come on. I wi ask question after I have tried a few
things but if anyone has any words of wisdom they will be welcome :-)
Does anyone know if having acpi of effects wireless?

Pat

Hi Pat,
I highly recommend that you recompile your Kernel 2.6.8.x and you'll be
able to get acpi working. It's important to have it working so that
your fan doesn't have to work so hard. You'll be able to turn down your
clock speed to extend battery life. Which chipset is your wifi? I've
used Ndiswrapper to get my wifi working on my ze4560us but it loses
connectivity when I go beyond 10 feet. In windows its range is around
60 feet. I'm still trying to solve the instability of Ndiswrapper.

When compiling that kernel, say No to apic.
Good luck,
Sevatio

Sounds similar to my Compaq 2100's issues. I was able to setup/load
a
custom DSDT, which solved the ACPI and related problems. (Although
prism54 still doesn't work as I hit the usual, mfg changed internals
but kept the same product number. Ndiswrapper works for me, from

Hello I am running Mandrake 9.1 and I am trying to run a

Here is the text of the file named Makefile1:

# determine the compiler

CC=gcc

$(CC) –I$(INCLUDE) $(CFLAGS) –c main.c

Now the error I get when I execute the command: make
–f Makefile1

is Makefile1:16: *** missing separator. Stop.

If I expand the macros in the makefile I get the same error.
If I execute the line by itself on the command line everything works as
expected. I am at a loss as to why it is failing the way it is.

Can anyone help me out?

I was going to download a distro's ISO and the official site said I
should first download BitTorrent. It came in as a .exe. Why would it
give me an exe to download a linux file.
Confusing. I wouldn't want a distro in windows.

With NFS, unless you specify otherwise, root on the remote machine is
mapped to nobody when accessing the exported files. This is a security
feature. Need I explain the kind of damage you could do if you spoof the
IP address of a box allowed to mount the share if root access were
allowed?

Of course you can find ISO for Mandrake 10.0 - for example on this mirror:
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandrakelinux/official/iso/10.0/i586/
There are ISOs for 3 CDs of the Mandrake 10.0 Official Edition (which
are basically Community Edition with some bugfixes).
If you insist on using Community Edition instead of Official Edition,
you can use this command as root to add this mirror as the source of
your packages:
# urpmi.addmedia Your_name_of_web_source
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/mandrakelinux/devel/10.0/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/
with ../base/hdlist.cz
You can use synthesis.hdlist.cz instead of 22.4 MB hdlist.cz file
(synthesis.hdlist.cz is much smaller file - but you lose some details of
packages such as list of file names), and, of course, your preferred
mirror instead of ftp.gwdg.de (there is a list on the Mandrake's site).

I haven't installed that, so I have to guess, but that's almost certainly
where you can put something to make it look as though you are running IE.
There are a few really badly designed sites that simply won't let you in if
you are running something else, and they mostly read the browser

they aren't "real" OS's. Who me? Biased? Nah!

I don't know if I sent this friday or not, I didn't see it posted. urpmi for
dbtools was the first thing I tried. It says that there is no such package.
I made sure that the urpmi sources were current, and they are. Is it
possible that's because I'm not yet a mandrake club member. I'm waiting to
get current on my bills before I join. Thanks for the support so far.

I had the same problem with my Inspiron 510m while I had mdk 10.0 OE
running. After upgrading to mdk 10.1 CE the laptop shuts and powers down
automatically. Only thing which I didn't get working is the wlan but I
hope this is solved after upgrading to 10.1 OE.

Another thing I noticed with my inspiron is the power consumption...
after 'bout 2 hours I am down and have to find a power connection.
Anyone with a similar problem?

Alex

You have to install wine by urpmi or rpmdrake (you can access the
latter through Mandrake Control Center) by 'urpmi wine' command (or
picking wine package in the rpmdrake - you can easily search for wine
there). WINE is part of basic Mandrake package, so it should be found
on your CDs (or DVD).

WINE (WINE Is Not Emulator) does not emulate the entire Win32 system -
it only adds Win32 API (Application Programming Interface) to the
programs to let them work. It's far from being complete, and it requires
in many cases manual fiddling with WINE config files (which can be found
in ~/.wine directory), but if it works, it usually works as fast as in
Windows. For further information on this rather complicated subject, see
http://www.winehq.org/ .

I hope it'll help you!

Try setting your /etc/hosts file to be

127.0.0.1 centrino.linux.home localhost

Hi Greg, long time no see :)
This is the info:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# hostname
centrino.linux.home

And, tinydns is not installed.

What should I do to correct the slow KDE start?
Thanks.

If you want to run Windows programmes then run Windows.

While it is possible to use Wine to run **some** Windows applications in Linux
it is not straightforward, and you are not likely to succeed on your first
day as a Linux user. Why not try out some Linux applications? There are some
great ones on your CDs

Ask if you want some tips on which apps to use.

If you have some specialised need to run specific Windows apps, then checkout
www.codeweavers.com for a version of Wine which makes office type Windows apps
easy to install for a newbie. (It costs money), or if gaming is your thing go
to www.transgaming.com for a version of Wine optimised for **certain**
Windows games. (It costs money) Or go to www.netraverse.com if you want to
run Windows98 INSIDE Linux

cpufreq is controlled by cpufreq.conf, but that is unlikely why KDE starts
slow. My experience with KDE anf GNOME slow startups is that they are
usually related to local name reslution, namely that the machine is having
trouble resolving itself. Did you give your machine a hostname, is tmdns

Sounds similar to my Compaq 2100's issues. I was able to setup/load a
custom DSDT, which solved the ACPI and related problems. (Although prism54
still doesn't work as I hit the usual, mfg changed internals but kept the
same product number. Ndiswrapper works for me, from sourceforge.)

Some help on setting up a DSDT:

Hi

Well I am guessing that you are not asking why Microsoft .exe files
won't work in Linux. You do realise that Microsoft programs won't
work under Linux unless you use some sort of windows emulator
like Wine don't you?

Or are you saying now when you boot into Windows all the .exe files in
your DOS partition now won't work?

More info needed...

I never tried that solution, but I did have similar symptoms on an Iiyama
monitor. IIRC I could start in failsafe, and from there I could change the
monitor setup. I think it was trying to start in 24-bit mode, but it worked
perfectly in 16-bit mode. I had to do this twice, though, because the first
time I ran 'test' which seemed to bork things. The second time I just saved
the settings without testing and it accepted them. I've had no problems at
all since then.
