For those NOT using the KDE desktop, the same utility is available
by using the command ksysguard in a terminal - do it from a root

Well - I have an install - did not get GUI up so obviously have a couple
of things to sort out. LILO worked great - so thank you to those who
helped. I'll reboot to Mdk and see what I can work out. Printer is
perfect!
Thanks

loading, when I expect/hope/am used a GUI getting lines of text ending
in mount USB file system. This is probably basic to you people, but a
mystery to me. Any help greatly appreciated

I didn't have this problem myself, but I know some others have had, and I
think they were cured by adding peripherals back after install. I'm not sure
whether ohci, uhci and hotplug were all installed at initial installation, or
whether they had to be added as well. Keep us informed of your progress and

 To explain how I got WinMe to work you need to understand that

 fool windows into believing it is in control.

 sees as /mnt/hdb2_boot . Lilo of course would see it as
 /dev/hdb2.

 Basically, lilo needs to be pointed at that partition the moment I

 select it as an option.

What I've done in the past (not saying it is the correct way to
do it, or the only way) is to copy all the necessary files out of

[newbie] Data Base Help

2005-02-09 Thread SOTL
Hi All

I have a problem with what I am trying to accomplish which begans with I have
no idea of what I need to do technically to accomplish my objective so hence
this posting.

Basic objective is a data base of clients along with their address phone
numbers, contact names, and preferences plus other additional fields. The
eventual product of this information could be used in a number of different
computers so a client server DB such as mysql or postgres or Open Office 2
will be needed.

All well and good but there is a pre stage to the data base. In order to input
the required data I must first output it from a number of existing data bases
over which I have no control of the output consequentally there are issues
with data placement and format which is easiest to explain by example.

For example my database requires data to be in the form of:
Given_Names | Family_Name | Address_1| Address_2 | City | State | Zip

and I receive data in the format of
Names | Address | City__State_Zip

The cut past and text transformation options are slightly better in MS Office
than they are in Open Office so I have been manipulating this data by means
of MS Word and Excel to obtain the correct format which is painful and time
consuming as neither a word editor or spread sheet are setup with the tools
required for data editing and column formating.

I would thus like to know if anyone knows of a spreadsheet type program not
set up to do mathematical operations but data editing. The program must be
spread sheet based so that one may see the data and provide better tools
which are again best explained by example.

Lets assume that one has a matrix of test data that is 20 columns wide and
30,000 rows deep, not a small matrix, with data scattered through in the
wrong column. For example:
Given Names for individual 1 is 1 name, for individual 2 it is 5 names, and
for individual 3 it is 3 names. English names of first, middle, last are not
to difficult but sprinkle in a number of Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese
names and total confusion reigns not to mention issues with other regions.
Address can be 1 line, 2 lines, or 3 lines et.

By now you get the picture of what the data is.

What is needed is sort ability for all or blocks of data by:
1. either rows or columns.
2. by data from the front or back
Let me explain the latter.
Lets assume that you have a number of individuals in your data which have 2,
3, 4, or 5 names but all have Jr. or II, or III at the end which is not
required for this application so it would be best to remove such formality in
simplification. This feature would allow one to search by the last letter of
the field first.

Anyway by now one gets the idea that a spread sheet/word editor or database is
not what I have reference to as none of these programs is geared to
organizing data into the apposite column for usage in a data base.

Any help suggestions or ideas concerning how to procede, which programs to
examine or more applicable bulletin board would be appreciated.

Thanks

Frank

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you just want to place 6
photos on the document, you can use OpenOffice. Set the page to
A4, select Insert--Graphics--From file. Then you can manipulate
the photos around, and when finished, File--Export as PDF.

If, on the other hand, you want a batch command to do it I'm not

Re: [newbie] Data Base Help

2005-02-09 Thread David G Stevenson
SOTL wrote:
Hi All
I have a problem with what I am trying to accomplish which begans with I have
no idea of what I need to do technically to accomplish my objective so hence
this posting.

Thanks
Frank

Basically, I think that the best thing you can do is learn a little
Perl, which by it's name is designed for these sorts of tasks. With a
little basic help/reading, all of your tasks are achievable.

All you really need to do is define the rules for which the data should
comply. And then convert these to code.

One thing that seems to be missing in linux is a good photo-printing program.
This is one of the few things that makes me used Win4Lin. ArcSoft
PhotoPrinter has templates for sheets of various sizes of photo, and you can
import the relevant number of graphic files from any directory. It handles
simple editing like rotate, flip and crop, but nothing more. I wish someone
could write something similar for linux.

computer doesn't halt at the POST and to recognise all the partitions on
the 80 GB disk. All the partitions on this disk are FAT 32 and windows
98 se is installed on the first one.
What is wrong is that linux doesn't recognise but the first main
partition on the 80 Gb disk and sees all the other partitions as a
single one (I have Drive C=10GB D=10GB E=20 GB F=20 GB G=20 GB on
Windows 98). Linux sees partition 1=10 GB and partition 2=70GB.
More. Diskdrake knows that a Dinamic Drive Overlay is beeing used
because it shows that on the information of the main partition of hda.
Is there any way of making all the partitions availlable?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Marco

I think it is because the person(s) maintaining it changed hands.
Regardless it does not matter it is a great program.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 10.1 install checking for new hardware

2005-02-09 Thread Rosemary McGillicuddy

I didn't have this problem myself, but I know some others have had, and I
think they were cured by adding peripherals back after install. I'm
not sure
whether ohci, uhci and hotplug were all installed at initial
installation, or
whether they had to be added as well. Keep us informed of your
progress and
we'll see what we can sort out.

Thanks Anne
Rebooted with scanner unplugged and this time got as far as checking
for new hardware. I waited five minute - not sure how long to wait.
Nothing happened so stopped it.

The other thing I forgot to say, was that on the first boot after
install I received a message saying 'Welcome to first boot' but mouse
wouldn't work. I thought it was detected correctly during the install,
but perhaps not. It is a MS intellipoint on USB. I can change it to
standard mouse connection with an adapter, if this would help. I have a
recollection that mouse was a problem a few years ago with linux and had
to call it something else.
Thank
Rosemary

Bit of a SNIP here - Frank
You are correct that image=/boot/vmlinuz probably wouldn't work on
your system because that is typically a link to which ever kernel
version is installed. Your system appears to be setup to not use
such a link, so you would just have to show it as
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.whatever.version.youhave
then you would also need to modify initrd=/boot/initrd.img to
point to what ever version of initrd you would be using, like your
other entries in lilo.conf do.
if you were to copy vmlinuz, initrd, config, etc. (not exactly sure
off the top of my head which files you need to copy out of /boot -
anybody know off hand?) from your 9.1 install IRC to which ever
partition that controls your bootup, then instead of;
other=/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part2
label=linux90
table=/dev/hdb
image=/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hdb5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=noapic devfs=mount acpi=ht splash=silent
vga=788
read-only
how about this;
image=/boot/vmlinuz.your.version.here
label=linux90
root=/dev/hdb5
initrd=/boot/initrd.your.version.here.img
append=noapic devfs=mount acpi=ht splash=silent
vga=788
read-only
other than that, I would tend to suspect that maybe root=/dev/hdb5
may need to have a different partition number instead of 5.
Hope I am not too confusing!

It isn't that it is confusing because it raises question that my
technical logic trips up and that is what may make things confusing.
Keep the input coming as it is most helpful.

 Brought over from another reply
I still don't know how you installed Linux on the second drive. But
there are a couple of things you could do. One would be to something
like this:

*** I had this hdd drive only to start with and successfully got dual
booting with it before consigning it to be slave when I went to update
to Mandrake10. ***

*** Now everything Mikkel writes here has finely woken me up to what
needs to be done and I look forward to the challenge because Mikkel has
'hit the nail on the head', so to speak.

As Mandrake 9 was installed whilst the slave was the only hdd on my
system then of course everything in the config files points to hda
and of course will need to be changed. So where do I start and what do I
look for once I have booted into this system ?
[ This is an exercise only for me and not a mission critical requirement
so I will, hopefully with the help offered here, take this one step at a
time and if it is worthwhile and others agree, I will post it to the
TWiki as a possible system recovery idea.]

Anyway, with sleeves rolled up I venture forth.
Here are the files I need to investigate that I know about to date -
please add others as you think of them. I'm of course referring to the
hdb files only here.

/etc/fstab
/etc/lilo.config
mkdir /boot-9
mount /dev/hdb2 /boot-9
Use this in lilo:
image=/boot-9/vmlinuz  label=linux90
 root=/dev/hdb5
 initrd=/boot-9/initrd.img
 append=noapic devfs=mount acpi=ht splash=silent
 vga=788
 read-only
Add a line in /etc/fstab to mount boot-9 in the future.
(Coppy the line for /boot, and change
 /boot to /boot-9 and /dev/hda2 to /dev/hdb2)
Now, if /dev/hdb was /dev/hda when you installed MDK9,
then you will have to edit /etc/fstab on that version,
and change everything that refers to /dev/hda to /dev/hdb.
Another way to do it is use:
other=/dev/hdb
label=linux90
Then, in 9.0, change /etc/lilo.conf so that it installs in the MBR of
the second drive.

Hmmm Not sure I can do this without actually having MDK9 running at
the time otherwise to my way of thinking, it will install directly to
the master MBR surely?? Even then I'm not sure how to control running
/sbin/lilo to be sure it actually installs onto the hdb MBR.

boot=/dev/hda becomes boot=/dev/hdb.
What happens then is when you pick linux90, you get a second boot
screen.
Again, if you installed 9.0 when the drive was the first hard drive,
you have some editing to do. Both in /etc/fstab, and /etc/lilo.conf.
You will also need to run lilo when in 9.0 to update the boot loader
on the second drive.

Can you boot 9.0 now, or do you need instructions
on how to mount the partitions, and make the changes?
I haven't gone this way yet Mikkel because I think things will only fall
over until all changes to config files are made.
I do like your idea of having the second logon screen option and will
venture that way first once files are changed.

Agreed - it would be really nice. Even better would be one that allowed the
distro information to be included, so that it could become more widely
useful. People who absolutely need a particular piece of less-common
hardware could then see which distro was the best bet for it.

 Of course, nowadays most of the
 hardware just works, so it's less of an issue.

True. Still, for those considering the change, or for buying new hardware, it
would be extremely helpful. The problem is finding someone with the skills
to do it and sufficient time. It must be possible to collect info from
either kcontrol or harddrake and put it into a form, but there would have to
be a central database, hosted by who? And of course the interface to upload
the data. I wish I had the skills to try it, though.
