Dave, I'm sure someone will take you up on that. Meanwhile, to make this a
more permanent help, could you start now writing up all you have learned
about getting the system up and running, then add to it anything that comes
up from users asking you for help? It would be nice to add this to the
TWiki. When you get to that stage ask for help if you need it.

OK - that's out, then. What about the fstab line? It feels a long time since
I used a 2.4 kernel, so I may be remembering wrongly, but is the cdrom really
scd1? I would go to MCC > Hardware > Mountpoints and check everything there
- not forgetting the advanced tab. I usually find that fixes any problems I
have.

[newbie] artswrapper oddity

2005-03-11 Thread Phlod
Hello again everyone.
I'm having a rather bizarre problem with artswrapper (and my system
notifications, but I think the two may be related). Ever since I
upgraded to KDE 3.3, I haven't been able to set the Sound System to
Realtime priority. When I try, it gives me this error: Impossible to
start aRts with realtime priority because artswrapper is missing or disabled

Artswrapper is there in /usr/bin. However, when I set it as UID root,
it suddenly is highlighted in red with black text. I don't remember it
doing that before, nor do I have any clue what the red highlighting
signifies. Any help on this would be met with praise and adoration from
me. Thank you in advance.

True. I have two usb slots in front, both go to the MB. One sees my

Fwd: [newbie] Network Card Not Working in Full Duplex Mode

2005-03-11 Thread Amy

this to the list. Bah. Forwarded to the list now.

Subject: Re: [newbie] Network Card Not Working in Full Duplex Mode
To: "Mikkel L. Ellertson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hey guys,

I hadn't fixed things as well as I'd thought, so I figured I'd check
back in and let everyone know what happened.

The mii-tool thing ended up not acting like it made a difference after
I'd left my computer sitting overnight, so I gave the ifdown eth1,
unplug for 60 seconds, ifup eth1 thing a try. (Note to anyone reading
this later for help, my network card is eth1 because I don't use the
onboard network card, but the typical network card is usuall eth0). No
luck with that, still wasn't behaving as it should.

At that point I gave in and decided to shut down my computer. I ended
up pulling out the network card, and reseating it after I completely
shut off the power to my computer, then turning my computer back on.
Everything seem to have reset itself and all the lights came on like
they should have. Everything since has been behaving correctly, so I
suppose I really can call this fixed.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me!

[newbie] K3b help?

2005-03-11 Thread Ronald J. Hall
Well, I had a fully working k3b setup until I had a major problem with my
/home directory (don't ask - long story) and reinstalled.

Anyways, k3b now errors whenever I try to burn a DVD. I've got a Plextor 708a,
with the following software versions running:

libk3b1-0.11.9-0.092.1mdk
k3b-0.11.9-0.092.1mdk
cdrecord-cdda2wav-2.01-0.a26.092.1mdk
cdrecord-devel-2.01-0.a26.092.1mdk
cdrecord-2.01-0.a26.092.1mdk
dvd+rw-tools-5.18.4.8.6-0.092.1mdk

Here is the /etc/fstab entry (one line):
/dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom2 auto
codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,noauto,nosuid,ro,umask=0,user,nodev 0 0

The Plextor is in the master position, secondary IDE channel.
It has "hdc=ide-scsi" in /etc/lilo.conf.

Anyone have any idea about where to start? Thanks.

Run "urpmi libXaw3d7-devel", "urpmi libtiff3-devel", and so forth for
all the packages you need. The libraries are probably already installed,
but you need the development packages that go with them if you want to
compile your own programs that use them.

If you realy want to compile it yourself, you can probable run
imake -I../../config/cf -DTOPDIR=../.. -DCURRENTDIR=lib/Xaw3d
instead of
../../config/imake/imake -I../../config/cf -DTOPDIR=../..
-DCURRENTDIR=lib/Xaw3d

but I think you would be better off installing the development packages
instead of compiling the libraries yourself. Unless you are carefull
about how you do it, you stand a good chance of breaking things,
especialy if there is a security update for one of the packages. Having
a library installed as an rpm, and then compiling and installing the
same library is not realy a good idea.

That will allow you to write, delete etc. directly on the camera.

Beware though, sometimes you won't be allowed to chmod even as root.
In order to bypass that, you'll have to edit your /etc/fstab so
that umask=0 (instead of the default 0022) for the device line.
Save that file, umount the device and mount again.

Now you'll have all permission set drwxrwxrwx which means that root,
yourself and all others can do as they please.

Kaj; Thanks for the info. It turns out that Digikam allows me to erase
the camera's flash card memory without a single problem (it has a delete
option). Since Digikam sets up a default folder for the pics in my /home
folder, permissions aren't a problem.

My whole problem revolved around the fact that the camera wasn't in
"play" mode when I tried to access it. Now it's working fine.

In theory it's a storage device, so you should be able to. OTOH, I'd rather
play safe and let the camera do it.

It's worth mentioning at this point that not all usb slots are equal. Some
devices will work perfectly on slots that are directly on the motherboard,
but not on slots that are in any sense extensions. It's not only linux,
either. My HP printer would not install in windows if I plugged it into a
powered usb hub, which is , after all, just an extension of one of the back
sockets. And then there's the problem of fake(?) usb2 slots.

[newbie] Can't set nomail!

2005-03-11 Thread Keith Powell
For various family reasons, things will be rather chaotic for the next 2-3
weeks. Consequently I will not be doing any computing.

As I don't want hundreds of postings waiting for me when I am back on the
computer, I have been trying to set nomail for both newbie and expert,
following the instructions in the Sympa help file, but can't.

I have tried three different ways to set nomail, but none of them work - I am
still getting all the postings.

I tried "SET newbie NOMAIL" in the body of the e-mail, with no subject: the
same but with "SET newbie NOMAIL" also as the subject, and also with SET
newbie|* NOMAIL in the body (both with and without a subject).

This was repeated for the expert list.

I can't think of anything else to try :(

All were sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED], which I am certain is the
correct address.

So, PLEASE can someone tell me where I am going wrong, and how to temporarily
suspend the postings. I wonder if it is me, or if it is Sympa playing up?

Many thanks

Keith

Again, my camera was not supported until 2.4.21, and I can confirm that it was
still detected in that way. Have you got a recent kernel on the relevant
box, Mr. Geek?

I guess it is possible that you have to turn the camera on, but I do not
think so. (Unless you had to do that for it to be detected in Windows.)
I would double check the cable connections, and if you can, try a
different cable. Even if Linux didn't identify the camera properly, it
should still show up in the output of lsusb. Here is the output on my

Hi there,

Have you tried gphoto or gphoto2? It's quite powerful. I'm kinda success to
handle two cameras, one is SONY something and another is KODAK something.
Both are not listed models but gphoto2 could handle it as a generic type.

I just purchased a Kodak camera and it was not in the list for didkam,
so I looked under the settings where the list of cameras was and saw
an auto detect button. This came up with a generic usb camera. I
have been using this with complete success. The process isn't
automated like the Windows software, but I have a lot more control
over what gets downloaded and where. HTH.

Everything worked fine, for the most part. I tried to download the
privateer remake which had a stated file size of 180.5 meg.
Bitttorrent ran at ~160 kps up until that point where the percentage
went to 99% downloaded. The speed dropped to ~30 kps and kept
downloading. There were uploads at a speed of 1 kps the entire time.
I went out for the evening with the download still going (200 meg and
still going). When I got home the download was complete at 360 meg.
The game installed and now I have to learn how to play it.

I followed these steps:
1. urpmi bittorrent
2. urpmi bittorent-gui
3. urpmi mozplugger (Failed on real-codec dependancy of mplayer)
4. Went to website of download and clicked on file.
5. Firefox asked to open of save. Open was with bittorent gui so I chose that.

Thanks for all of your help.

"Google" ( I prefer www.vivisimo.com ) for urpmi.unlock and install it ~
you may already have it ~ try 'urpmi.unlock' at the root prompt.

If not you may need to manually download it and install it using rpm -Uvh .
Unless you are doing a kernel rebuild there is no need to reboot your
