 Past a few days
Now I know how to fix the fonts problem but I still don't know how how to
 put X working.
 Can anyone help me?

From your config files, it appears that your refresh rate (20-270 MHz)
is out of the range of your monitor's capabilities. And also, you are
running X 4.0.1. XF86Config is for X 3.3.6. We would need to see
XF86Config-4 for XFree86 4. But your error logs were more than
informative for me. Change your refress, hsync, and vrefresh rates to
that within the range of your monitor and all things should be gravy.

The Bastille rpm file would now be in /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586 or whatever
arch you use put that in place of the i586 (ie i386, i486, k6, etc).

Well, hear goes my XF86Config, XFree86.9.log and XFree86.0.log. The
option "non-interlaced svga" at 800x600 (16 bits) makes the same that the
others. My video card is an S3 Virge Dx/Gx.
Now I'm receiving also an error related to the X fonts server "Could not
init fonts path unix/:-1" and "Could not load default fonts fixed", but
don't borrow with that because when I install
 linux again this error disapears.

You don't have to reinstall linux to fix the default fonts error. I have
a fix. Here are the many methods you can use:

/sbin/service xfs restart

or the long way;

/sbin/service xfs stop
/sbin/service xfs start

you can do another method but I will have to post that one later as my
daughter is demanding my attention. BRB.

My machine lost power in a snowstorm. It rebooted and now I am unable to
restart KDE or any other X interface. I can log in via the terminal
(console) without problem but the command startx doesn't start X. It gives
me error messages. I tried Xconfigurator again as root but it too gave me
errors with my card and monitor setup screen showing "unknown". Even with
Xconfgurator fixed again to the proper monitor and graphics card, startx
still doesn't any X windowing system. I get errors about "fixed fonts" not
available (I think). The XFree versions on my system are 3.3.6 and 4.0.1.

When shutting down after this crash, the Mandrake Aurora graphical
interface says unable to shutdown the "X Font Server", it had an "x"on
it! Reinstalling Linux fixes the problem but when I install Netscape 6,
the same thing happened. I now have Netscape 6.0.1 but have not installed
 it yet.

 The command
   /usr/sbin/chksession -l
gives me KDE, Gnome, IceWM, Sawfish, default and failsafe as options. I
know that issuing the command startx xxx (where xxx is one of those windows
managers) should start one of these sessions, but it doesn't work after the
 crash.

My graphics card is an ATI Xpert98 (8 megs, Mach64 chipset), machine is a
K6-400 with 128 megs, plenty of disk space (30gb).

Is X-windows so delicate (I don't think so), or is my video card the
problem or ? Can I save some configuration files somewhere to overwrite
corrupt ones when this happens again? I hate to keep reintalling linux - I
know that this is an overkill approach!

You can do one of many things. First, let us check your font server
(xfs) status.

(as root)
/sbin/service xfs status

If it says something to the effect of;

xfs (pid 659) is running...

Issue this command next

(as root)
/sbin/service xfs restart

then rerun your X server:

startx

If you don't have your xfs server running, input this command:

(as root)
/sbin/service xfs start

then run your X server:

startx

If your X server still will not load, try this "soft" hack using your
favorite editor:

(as root)
Open up your XF86Config-4 file and go to the line:

FontPath "unix/:-1"

uncomment this line. It should look like this:

#FontPath "unix/:-1"

Save and quit out of the editor. Restart your X server once again:

startx

I guarantee that this should make it work. If I am wrong, you can call
me Susan! LoL (still do this as a last resort)

Once your X server is running again, you can recomment your FontPath
once again:

(as root using your favorite editor)
go back to the line:

#FontPath "unix/:-1"

and remove the uncomment:

FontPath "unix/:-1"

Save and quit. Your X server shall now run as good as new.

that should download the needed server rpm. It should automatically add

have to configure it for that. Use liloconf as it is now in there to be

Hi, everybody. Not sure what I did (don't think I did anything), but my
system is refusing to start properly. When it gets to the stage where it
mounts the file systems (in read-only mode i think), it says /dev/hda8
already mounted cannot continue, same for /hda9. It drops me back to shell,
as root I try to umount hda8 (tried with the -v, -f, -a, and -n tags) but it
won't unmount (says it's in use). hda9 unmounts fine. (incidentally, hda8
is my /usr partition) I'm assuming umount is running from /usr or using
libc on that partition, and thus cannot unmount it. How do I unmount it
then? And why would this have happened in the first place? When I restart,
both hda8 and hda9 are already mounted already (again). Any clues?

I assume you are in a GUI.
Type:

DrakConf

and next click on "Tools for booting"

choose configure LILO/GRUB

click on "OK"

next choose "Add"

Choose "Linux"

Give it a label (title) name like "scratch-kernel"

Point "Image" to your kernel by clicking on the "upside-down triangle"

The "Root" should be correct. If not... make it so (Star Trek).

Append whatever parameters you have to pass. Mine has nothing specified
in this box.

Click on the "Default" box if you want this to be your default kernel.

Choose "Ok"

Click on "Done"

Quit out of DrakConf and (believe it or not) reboot.

If you setup your "/home" directory to be on a seperate partition, the
damage of reinstalling is minimal. You will not lose anyfiles that you
have placed into this directory but you should not choose to **format**
this directory when the partitioner asks you for this action. Format "/"

Very true but also a way to keep configuration-faults 'alive'
 especialy on the xserver side.

That is true if you have placed configuration information into your home
directory that directly affects your system hardware to work. It is my
impression that "/home" stores "personal" information and configuration.
I have been upgrading betas and what not for over fourteen months and I
haven't had any problems with sparing my "/home" directory. If anything,
that is the only directory that needs to be spared unless you plan to
switch the type of filesystem that it is under (ie ext2 converted to
Reiserfs), then you would need to backup.

I don't have that file, Al. All I have is /etc/conf.modules Is that
the one you are referring to? ...or is it a different file? It looks
very cryptic. What's with all the "alias", "pre-install", and "options"
 statements?

That is it. . o O (Intriguing?) Strange that it is written in reverse of mine. The
pre-install and alias-type commands are what your kernel uses to install modules.
Check to see if you HPOJ module "alias" is in this file. If it is not there, you need
to plug it in at the end of the file like so:

alias parport_lowlevel parort_pc
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 ? /proc/parport/0/irq

That is how mine look to install a Lexmark 1100 and Epson Stylus Color 400 printer on
my system.

**??** What does "?!?!" mean? Is it an emoticon like an exclamation of bewilderment,
confusion, shock, disbelief, or conternation?

If I install the kernel-2.4.1-7mdk.i586.rpm my system does not boot upp
corretcly, it stops when it's going to access the RAID set. But if I install
the kernel-source-2.4.1-7mdk, enable the RAID support, and compile the
kernel, then the system boot up correctly.

** Hold up **

That is obvious. Yes, you can run kernel-x.x.x.arch.rpm without the other
kernel-myspecialty-x.x.x.arch.rpm, but if you plan on reconfiguring your kernel for
"special" features, then you would at least need kernel-source-x.x.x.arch.rpm and
kernel-utils-x.x.x.arch.rpm.

 I have the / as a RAID0 and only /boot as a "normal" disk.

I think it is beacuse the RAID is as an module.

But If I install the source and kompile the kernel, then I have other
 problem...
** My Turn **

?!?! Source as in tarball or "kernel.x.x.x.src.rpm"?
Other problem? Let me guess, kdeaddutil-type dependency errors?

So I have two options. Fix it manually or reformat. I was thinking of

So advise is requested: how can I fix supermount manually (as you listed as
 an option)?

Or if I reinstall, should I delete the .kde/share/applnk out of my home
directory that won't be reformatted before reformatting / (and upgrading to
 kde2.1b2)?

And can I go from kde 1.99 (which is on my cd) to the 2.1b2 or should I go
through the 8 hours of downloading to update it 2.0 first?

Should I update the kernel first then kde, vise versa, or does it matter?

Anything else you'd care to throw in is also welcome. Thanks for your time

Fix it manually, because there is no other way of getting supermount to work with your
new kernel otherwise on it's own. You will have to follow Tom Brinkmans's advice on
this one. It is actually simple to do, you probably need to put his instructions into
steps and then print it out on a printer.

soory to e-mail you but how the hell do i stop all these
  linux e-mail's

**Interrupt***

Create a filter to send any mail withou an "Re:" to the trash. LOL

Next select only those subjects that interrest you. Delete the rest.

All will be fine after that. If it is too much of a task to select through the
voluminous number of emails, send all "newbie" Subject Line files to the trash. And
then from there select what you are going to reply. That way your email remains sane
looking and you have the peace of mind that if you leave for a week, your email will
not be full or congested.

***End Interruption***

What is the difference between kernel-source-xxx and
  kernel-x.x.x.src?

***Pause***

The difference is this; kernel-x.x.x.src.rpm is the source (uncompiled, and arch
independent) rpm package. kernel-source-x.x.x.[arch].rpm is compiled for a particular
system and contains source code for that particular system (I speculate on that part
but it is definitely compiled for that particular system).

***Unpause***

Who do I compile a kernel-x.x.x.src?

***What?***

You mean how do you compile a kernel-x.x.x.src.rpm?
Use this command:
(as root)

rpm --rebuild kernel-x.x.x.src.rpm

***Un-What***

The kernel-2.4.1 has not RAID support enable, must I
recompile the kernel to add that?

*** Correction***

kernel 2.2.x and up to the current kernel beta has RAID support enabled by default for
mdk package versions. From the tarballs it may be disabled. All you would have to do
is configure the kernel to your personal needs, not recompile. You can do that all
day until your computer puffs up smoke and you will not change anything. From the
/usr/src/linux directory type this command:
(as root)

make mrproper

once your system is clean (through) type this command next:

make config

or:

make menuconfig

but if you are in a window GUI environment type this command, instead:

make xconfig

When all is configured and saved, type these commands. In your case, we will do them
one at a time since you get weird errors and such.

make dep

make clean

make bzImage

make modules

make install

make modules_install

Believe or not, but after all this reboot.

If you can't load the new kernel because of boot errors, no problem. Boot in with your
old kernel and open of DrakConf and choose the "Tool booting utilities". Choose the
LILO/GRUB button and find and place your kernel. Save and now reboot.

***Correction complete***

I get problem with the soundcard and nic after compiling the
2.4.0 and 2.4.1 kernel. Kernel modules not found and

various sources, and being a Windows-weaned Linux newbie, I am having trouble
deciphering what I need to do. The HPOJ 700 is an all-in-one machine: color
 printer/copier/scanner/fax.
I have downloaded the HPOJ tar package, and gone through the installation
process as directed. I manually use insmod to install each component, and
there are no error messages. I know there is a way to start these modules up
on bootup, but I'm apparently needing to get more detailed step-by-step

script, please include the syntax I need to use.
I am using Linux Mandrake 7.0, as installed from the 3-CD set - kernel

I have also previously installed SANE from the rpm using rpmDrake. I don't
really understand how to make SANE work, either. (I guess Windows has

Re: [newbie] Huge swap file!!!

2001-02-09 Thread Altoine B

What happened was that you didn't configure your "extra" drive space. By default,
linux sets any new partiton as either blank (nonGUI), or SWAP (GUI). What you will
have to do, is to do it all again but to make sure that you don't specify the
partition for anything (unmounted). If it is to be used by linux, partition it as
ext2fs or Reiserfs (bleeding edge). Just don't mount any partitions to it. And swap is
a partition.

I guy by the name of Tom Brinkman had found the "bug" in the kernel script for 2.4.x.
He said that you have to do one of two things. Have had a copy of your old /etc/fstab
with supermount mentioned in it or a direct quote from Tom himself:

edite /etc/rc.d/init.d/mandrake_everytime this line ~~

# Disabling supermount if not here
if [[ $(uname -m) != sparc*  ]];then
  if grep -q '^\/.*supermount.*' /etc/fstab \
[ ! -f "/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/fs/supermount/supermount.o"
.^
] [ -x /usr/bin/perl ];then
action "Disabling Supermount" /usr/sbin/supermount -i disable

~~ to reflect 'supermount.o's new location. Voila! Now I have
2.4.0-11 with supermount on ReiserFS.

Excuse the long delay Moose, but netscape was down for a good while. This happens one
more time and I'm going to send this list to one of my other email accounts! Ok so we
want to optimize our kernel?

First, type in this command:

procinfo -asm
cat /proc/pci
cat /proc/..

better yet...

let us be GUI about this since I'm explaining this for newbies and beyond to
understand.

open up harddrake:

harddrake

or click on harddrake from the file menu as

this lists everything that is currently running on your system. Save it to file print
it out, write it down, or whatever you do, just remember this information. As it is
important in determining how you are going to configure your kernel. All the
information that you get from harddrake will help determine what you need on your
system.

Second,

the hardware. Make sure you got the information from make and model to slot and port.
Don't sweat the IRQ at this time.

Third,

Take note of what filesystems you have on your system.

Fourth,

take note of what services you are running on your computer.

Fifth,

Now, we get right into the process.

I can't go into detail at this time as my baby daughter is waiting on me. i will
finish if this "guide" is not enough. But basically, don't setup options for hardware
or the like that you don't have on your system. Your system actually wastes time
trying to search for the right driver if you have many set for one type of device or
feature. I know, I know if you plan to add a Webcam with a USB connector to your USB
ports but don't currently have anything plugged into them, don't include support for
it! You can always recompile it in when it becomes available to do so. If you don't
have PCMCIA hardware on your system, don't provide support. The rules are simple. I
just showed the way. Now, you must take the next step...

and see how deep the rabbit hole leads.

download kdeaddutils and kdeaddutils-devel rpm packages from Mandrake 7.2.
Reason:

we are going to untinstall kdeaddutils so that we can compile 2.4.1 and then reinsert
kdeaddutils.

Step one:
(as root)

rpm -e kdeaddutils-devel

rpm -e kdeaddutils

rpm --rebuild kernel*.src.rpm

cd /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586

or whereever your system moved your files.

rpm -ivh /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586/kernel*.rpm

rpm -ivh kdeaddutils

rpm -ivh kdeaddutils-devel

rpm --rebuilddb

reboot and enjoy.

Optimizing your kernel is in my next post on kernel utilization.

When I had went back to the site, I noticed that it was missing. Strange enough, that

If you installed your linux from a disc and you still have it near you, you can
reinstall drakfont on your computer after you do my fix that I had posted earlier. You
