[newbie] X-Server Probs...

1999-06-28 Thread Bob Bonifield

I tried installing 6.0 today and I had some problems with my x-server setup.
Basicly I couldn't find my monitor and being the stupid person as I am, i
just put on a monitor that was the same brand and size as mine. Now my
x-server goes all freaky. It worked fine in 5.3 when I was using a custom
1024x768 monitor. But what I was wondering is if there is a way I can
change my settings before the xserver auto starts.

[newbie] LM 6.0 Install Issues...

1999-06-05 Thread Bob Bonifield

Hey everybody. I have been using 5.3 for awhile now and have had no serious
problems. Now that the time to upgrade versions has come around, I decided
I might as well jump on the bandwagon. But first I have a few questions so
I don't fubar later on in the process of this install.

Mainly what I am wondering is if there is a way I can simply upgrade to the
new version without having to do a brand spanking new install. If there is
a way, how? I have checked around in the DOCs on the CD but have had no
luck on finding info on how to do this.

Secondly, if you can't upgrade, how would I go about formating my HD with
linux while still leaving my LILO configuration intact. Thx for the help
everybody, I really appreciate the helpful and gracious responses people
always seem to share when others ask questions on this list. Thx again,
Bye.

Re: [newbie] Autostart KDE

1999-03-24 Thread Bob Bonifield

Ok, what I plan to use linux for is basicly a dedicated sound system. I am
going to have it always play MP3 format music files in my car. Of couse
while the system is in my car, it will have no monitor or keyboard, so I
would not be able to type in a user name or password. Running without a
password wouldn't be a problem mostly because the system would do nothing
other then run that mp3 player...I just needed to know a way to bypass
having to login in linux and make it so mandrake will automaticly start up
KDE on launch.

Yes, I have had this problem is settings as well. Your problem is in that

So as I understand it, you have your net card connected to your cable modem
correct? I honestly don't know too much about cable modems so I don't know
where to start troubleshooting that, but if you are having problems getting
actual eth0 initializing, the problem is probably not so much the cable
modem, but the configuration of the netcard itself. You might want to make
sure that you have have the driver installed properly and that everything
is going ok. Also, check netcfg and make sure you have the "driver.o" file
set as the file eth0 is using...even though you have insmod going. Tell me
how she goes. Later

Re: [newbie] GLib and GTK update...

1999-03-15 Thread Bob Bonifield

Hey, I figured it out. The problem is in the fact that KDE defaultly
installs the GLib and GTK in the "/usr" prefix directory. When in fact the
default location that ./configure sets it at is "/usr/local". So, all you
have to do, is when you are trying to configure either/both GLib and GTK
you have to use this command line when you run ./configure:

./configure --prefix=/usr

Then the configuration should be correct. Then continue with the "make"
and "make install" commands and it *should* (hehe) work. I just figured
this out and it works great for me, so tell me your results. Later man,

it errors saying I need the latest version of Glib. If anyone could help

Hey, I had the same problem many a time

What you need to do is look in your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and make sure that
the insdmod line is thereexample:

insmod /location/of/module/driver.o

I tried for hours upon hours to get my card to work properly and I kept
getting the same bedamned messaged:

So, I'm lending a helping hand and trying to save you the headache I had.
