[newbie] Samba vs LinNieghborhood

2003-10-02 Thread Burrows, Scott
Hi all,

I have my MDK 9.1 box connected to our Windows network here at work using
Samba. From a windows box I can see my linux box on the network.

Using Samba alone should I be able to browse the windows network? Currently
I dont seem to be able to.

If yes can I log onto the Windows network from my linux box and browse the
network?

If I can use Samba for that then what is LinNieghborhood used for?

Thanks from a newbie.

RE: [newbie] Samba vs LinNieghborhood

2003-10-02 Thread Burrows, Scott
Derek,
I can seek the Linux box on the lan from windows. Yet when I bring up MCC
to see what samba packages I have available to install it shows Samba
server, Samba client. And to make it even more wierd Web Admin shows Samba
server is running and available for configuring. I did btw simply add the
windows domain name to configure Samba server.

Wierd that the server package appears avail for installing when it must
already be.

I would prefer to use Kongueror to browse the lan from the linux side just
like I would use Explorer to browse the lan from the windows side. I'll see
if the Lisa rpm you mentioned is available.

Right now I'm installing Samba server (though it must be already) and Samba
client.

Scott

PS: Derek, are you avail for online chatting?

It is not a question of Samba vs LinNeighborhood

Samba itself is split into 2 parts
Samba client - to allow you to browse windows networlks, and

Samba server - to allow Windows computers to browse you

LinNeighborhood is simply a GUI which uses Samba-client
 to browse Windows
   networks.
Alternatively you can browse Win networks with Komba2,
 xffm, Gnomba, or
after installing the lisa RPM by clicking on that little
 'cog wheel' in
the konqueror tool bar between the left and right panes,
 and selecting
   'Lan Browser'
Whichever method you use they all require Samba-client.

If you are having trouble browsing your Windows network,
 then the first
thing I would check is your firewall.
If you have a firewall between your Linux box and the
 Windows net, it
   will kill Samba dead.

   derek

Will we still need to have SWAT and WEBMIN after we install
  LinNeighborhood?

  Thanx,

  ayoub890

Samba client does not need any configuration. Just install
 samba-client and
LinNeighborhood and you are ready to browse Windows networks.

samba-sever requires configuration. But the default
 configuration works out
of the box All you have to do is edit the config file
 /etc/samba/smb.conf to
 set your Windows Workgroup name.
You can use webmin to do that if you wish.

I would advise against SWAT, because although it has a nice
 GUI, and has some
nice help files, it will delete the (working) default smb.conf file.

One tool you might like to try is ksambaplugin (RPM in Contrib)
It will put a new tool in your KDE Control Centre to
 configure Samba server.

Is it necessary for me to mount everything I wish to be able to see?

I'd like to be able to browse the entire Windows network that my MDK 9.1 box
is attached to.

How can I do that?

Surely not by mounting every resource.

 Scott,

it is used both ways, i.e to see linux disk from windows and
 viceversa.
In the former case you need the samba server, in the latter
 the client.

 Paul,

I did this rather a long time ago so I'm not sure I really
 didn't have
to do any configuration for the client. Currently I only need
 to issue:

 smbmount //ip_address_of_W2K_PC/share_name /mount_point

to see the W2K share from linux. I have to use the IP address because
the local network is mess (Novell + W2K + Sun) and DNS doesn't always
 resolve for me.
I think you need use the smbclient front-end only for debugging.

[newbie] Single passsword access

2003-09-23 Thread Burrows, Scott
Hi all,

I work on a windows lan. I have a an MDK 9.1 box that I'd like to give
access to all the windows rescoures like: printers, windows boxes, etc.

I set up a printer using the cups system but had to supply that system with
a userid and password to access the lan.

If I mount a share drive using LinNeighborhood I have to put a password in
there too. Now thats 2 places that I have to go change each month because
out windows lan requires it.

Is there a single central place within either the MCC or KDE to enter a
password that my linux box can look to for userid and password info?

I'm sure I'm not understanding something here.

[newbie] Hooking into Windows

2003-09-19 Thread Burrows, Scott
Hi all,

Were on a Windoze netework on Win2k boxes here. I have a 2nd box that is MKD
9.1 that I connected to the Windows LAN with no problems.

I wanted to access some the Windows resources like printers or other
computers so I, using LinNeighborhood, created some mapped or mounted
network resources on my 9.1 box.

For example I created a connection between my 9.1 Linux box and my Windoze
PC's C drive. No biggy.

I've since removed all the connections or at least I think I have, however
my LAN guys are telling me my Linux box is continuing to attempt to gain
access to the Windoze resouces.

The only reason they know this is because it requires a password to access
the LAN and the one I used at the time has since expired, so its raising
security flags on our network admins monitor.

I've shut off LinNeighborhood, even so as soon as I turn my Linux box on it
attempts to connect to LAN resources again. I cannot find what is telling
the box to do it.

I have nothing in my /mnt user folder.

Help!

[newbie] Screen saver disappears

2003-07-21 Thread Burrows, Scott
Hi all,

Running MDK 9.1 and KDE here.

I downloaded a screen saver (The Matrix - very nice), the instructions said
to copy the file KMatrix.desktop to
/usr/share/applnk-mdk/.hidden/ScreenSavers. Also copy the file
kmatrix.kss to /usr/bin.

It all works fine. When I look at the sceensavers available for using its
listed there as expected.

The problem is whenever I install software whether from doing an Update or
from downloading new stuff the KMatrix.desktop file dissappears and the
saver no longer shows up in the list.

I can solve this by recopying the file there again but why does it
disappear?

Mandrake IS popular.

Don't base your opinion on how popular Mandrake upon a Novell survey. Geeze

to go.

How many MDK'ers arn't voting because THEY never go to Novells site and have
no idea there's a poll being taken? In fact if I wasn't on this list I
would not have known to vote. How many MDKers are not on this list and so
don't know to go to Novells site to vote?

I know of the MDKers where I work I'm the only one on this list.

Maybe the Gentoo folks went out of their way to inform the 20 or so Gentoo
users to all go vote. (OK, I'm sure theres more than 20)

There are alot more MDKers than puny Novell's site says.

The system hung when I attempted to reboot it. I powered it down.

This did not help I still cannot bring KDE back up. It crashes each time.

Yes, it just had a single line about loosing connection to X server.

Are there any log files I could submit to the list for your

KDE dies right in the beginning where it's trying to set up

It was as if I was holding down the delete key when there was nothing
there
 to delete.

The system hung when I attempted to reboot it. I powered it down.

Now KDE crashes with a SIGSEGV error.

I deleted my .kde folder since this was a newish install.

This did not help I still cannot bring KDE back up. It crashes each time.

What can I do to get KDE running again?

 Thanks

[newbie] What file do I change?

2002-04-11 Thread Burrows, Scott

Hi all,

Running MD 8.2 here.

What file would the the root user modify if he wanted the change to
be seen by users when they logged in? For example if you wanted them
to see a Fortune Cookie message.

Thanks

For console logins, /etc/profile will affect all users. I'm not so sure
about
X... perhaps /etc/X11/Xsession?

[newbie] Any email clients that work with M$ mail server?

2002-04-09 Thread Burrows, Scott

Hi all,

I am envisioning converting our company to Linux but I need an
Outlook like client that works with MS mail server.

Why? To convince management to do this we must first convert
individual desktops, after that we can go after the mail servers.

So is there a mail client like MS Outlook for Linux?
It must be able to work with currently existing MS mail servers
on our LAN.

I have MD 8.2.

Thanks in Advance!

Civ,

Will that LN you created below dissappear if you reboot?
Should it also be written in a .conf file somewhere?

It installs and runs separately. It is KDE3 on the kdm selection and

11 KDE

on Xtart from console.

You need about 90 Mb space in / or /opt and if you do not have a
separate /opt and / doesn't have that much room, then do this:

1. Open a terminal
2. su to root
3.

mkdir -p /usr/opt
ln -s /usr/opt /opt
exit

before you install.

It seems to run well as security level 2 and to have problems at 3 or
higher. Some of the new open sockets do not appear to get the right
permissions for intewrprocess communications at higher security levels.

[newbie] DCOP broken link

2002-03-20 Thread Burrows, Scott

I just reinstalled MD 8.1, reformatting all partitions in the process.
The install went fine. I started KDE, then opened a terminal
window and did a ls -a and it shows a broken DCOP server
link. Why?

My .xsession-errors file says:

_KDE_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
DCOPServer is up and running.
_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
kdeinit: Fatal IO error: client killed
kdeinit: sending SIGHUP to children.
kdeinit: sending SIGTERM to children.
kdeinit: Exit.

The system is running. I have not discovered what is not working
as a result of the errors.

I've never even run the ICE window manager before if that has anything
to do with it.

Thanks in advance.

Scott,

Truthfully, I'm not sure about ICE. But DCOP is a process that allows
desktop application interoperability under KDE. I run Enlightenment
with the KDE compatibility mode enabled and DCOP runs a symlink in my
home dir as well. It allows cutting and pasting between apps, among
other things.

RE: [newbie] Resend: KDE does not come up.

2002-03-15 Thread Burrows, Scott

Civilme,

I rm'd the ~/.kde folder as you suggested and I deleted the
DCOPserver_localhost.localdomain_:0 file as well. Issued a
startx (which I dont have any reason to believe is
the problem) and I got the same error screen from KDE.
My .xsession-errors file says:

iceauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/scott/.ICEauthority
KCrash: crashing crashResursionCounter = 2
KCrash: Application Name = ksplash path = unknown pid = 2586
IO error opening ICE Connection!

IO error opening ICE Connection!

kdeinit: DCOPserver could not be started, aborting.

It sounds like the the .ICEAuthority file is corrupted.

Should I rm it and try KDE again?

OK let me think...

Hmmm

try

rm -r ~/.kde -f

then startx

The safe way to start window managers from the console is probably
Xtart. There is a bug in the current one, and I am not sure Xtart-1.1
has made it to mirrors so download at

http://www.civileme.net/Xtart-1.1-6mdk.i586.rpm

Then install with rpm -Uvh Xtart-1.1-6mdk.i586.rpm

[newbie] Why Kroot error?

Hi all,

I've an MD8.1 box. All works well.

I type in startx to bring up KDE. I am getting a flashing kroot error
message at the bottom
of screen.

When I open the file .xsession-errors in my home dir I see the following:

_KDE_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
DCOPServer up and running.
_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root

Again, all appears to be working so whats with the error message and how can
I fix it?

Press CTRLALTF7 (or occasionally, I've had to press F8).

Pressing ctrlaltF2 took you to a virtual console (one of six -- F1
thru F6) but left your X applications (GNOME) running in ...F7.

How is this different then simply clicking the Open Terminal icon in
 GNOME?

Don't use GNOME, but I believe it is the same as what happens in KDE --
in one case (Open Terminal) you open an X-based terminal within KDE
(Konsole), in the other case you open a non X-based virtual terminal.
