I had a Visor Deluxe and now have a Palm Vx. I couldn't get KPilot to work,

[newbie] USB

2004-04-11 Thread David Williams
My USB ports used to work and then stopped. I get an error message on boot
with something like
INIT USB cont (usb.ohci)
/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernal/drivers/usb/usb-ochi.0.gz
incorrect mod param or invalid IO or IRQ
Init_module: no such device

dmesg log has this in it.
usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
usb.c: registered new driver hub
usb.c: deregistering driver usbdevfs
usb.c: deregistering driver hub

My guess is that this quit after some update that I did.
I have check the IO and IRQ and they don't seem to be conflicting with
anything else. Mandrake control shows the USB but the configuration doesn't
show them configured.

[newbie] Sound Card

2003-09-26 Thread David Williams
I have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live 5.1 PCI sound card and I have just
about had enough with sound card problems with this computer. Over the past
couple of years, I started with Mandrake 8.2 and upgraded to 9.0 and 9.1
During my really initial learning phase, I reloaded Mandrake 8.2 and 9.0
several times each. The only problem that I had (and it occurred everytime)
was I had to struggle with getting the sound to work all the way. I got the
sound to work with 9.1 for the most part with the exception of the Surround
sound until recently someone had a solution that fixed the Surround sound.
Yesterday, during something I was doing, I trashed my / directory and had to
reload 9.1 for the second time. Guess what -- the sound doen't work at all
again. I have tried everything that I did in the past, researched the newbie
list (and there are thousands of entries on sound problems) tried everything
I could find there and still no sound.
My rant is that every time that I have had to install a new version or
reinstall an old version I have had to fiddle-dick with this sound card and
the solution has appeared to be different every time.
SO THE POINT TO THIS LONG AND TIRED EMAIL IS -- I know that someone (and I
remember it as being Anne) bought a sound card that came with Linux drivers
and worked out of the box. I don't mind the occasional learning experience
but this is one of those problems that I would like to make permanently go
away. Is there a particular Sound card that works?

I converted last year to Linux (at home). I did it for choice and because I
wanted to find and support an alternative to Microsoft (the possiblity of
Paladium and the lockdown on XP scared the heck out of me). I have not
looked back. I have found replacement software that was as good if not better
for everything I was doing on Microsoft and Linux is significantly more
stable. Case in point - I went to use my wifes PC (Win98) this afternoon (for
the first time in months) and I had to reboot 3 times before I could finish
what I was doing. I haven't had to rebooted my Linux box in about 4 months
now and I'm not sure I had to reboot when I did.

Just out of curiousity, is it rebooting at the same time or some multiple of

It should show up as aumix-2.7-13mdk.
Might check to see if it was installed and just not put in the menus.

Actually, its "Open a Web Location" under the "File" heading. I have it set to
"Open in a New Navigator Tab". I like the feature as you have a pull down for
commonly used web pages like "Slashdot". I think the implementation of tabs
is better done in Mozilla than in Phoenix.

Ok, I installed Phoenix to try it out and got everything working. I have been

Phoenix has its own set of directories. Its as if the mozilla executable was

Under KDE goto Configuration -> Packaging ->Install Software
It will ask for root password.
type in your password and rpmdrake will show up.

easiest thing to do is click on "All Packages, Alphabetically"
go down the list until you find "drakwizard-0.2-13mdk" or something similiar
and click on the box next to it.
insert the proper CD that it asks for and that should do it.

message age to whatever you want. When you close Kmail it will delete the
messages that meet that criteria.
OR
Under Settings->Configure Filters, you can define a filter in (age in days)
(equals) (some number).
You can then periodically apply the filter manually on a particular folder.

You will need to use a terminal program (probably superuser mode) and enter
the inputs from the command line. If you are not familiar with them, you
might want to read up a little on the basic command line inputs for changing
directories, copying and deleting files, etc. They are in the Command line
documentation (get there in KDE by clicking on the red and white lifesaver).
Start there and enjoy the learning experience.

If you are using KDE and in most cases from Konqueror, you can just double
click into the tar.gz file and then do a drag and drop of the files from
there into the temp directory. I generally use the superuser version so that
I have the terminal line available for anything else that I do.

I tried the site with Phoenix 0.5 and Mozilla 1.21 (both have Java installed)
and it worked fine. So I would say that Java is the key.

Thanks for the response.

I had copied the pref.js to user.js and added my changes to it. In an effort
to try something, I went back and removed the duplicate stuff and changed the
header from #mozilla preferences to #user prefs and it started to work. I
don't really know which change fixed it. Added a couple of other items to
speed it up and stop pop-ups. Pretty neat.

I have installed Phoenix, got java, realplayer and plugger, etc working.
I went to the Phoenix help page and found several tips and tricks that I
wanted to implement. I created a user.js file in the location specified and
made the changes that I wanted. However, Phoenix does not appear to see the
user.js file. I tried to change the pref.js file but it gets recreated.
Is there something else that I should do so that Phoenix sees the user.js
file?

Installing the plugin with the --nodeps fixed it.

I have installed Phoenix and in the process installed RealPlayer and Java.
If I try to install the realplayer rpm for Phoenix it tells me it can't
install because I need realplayer. How do I make the connection so that
Phoenix knows that realplayer is installed. (The same goes for Mozilla)

Depends on what you are doing with it. Outside of the CPU, the most current
draw will be the disk drives and the new ones draw very little power. Of
course a high powered graphics accelerator will draw a lot of power, but I
assume that doesn't apply here. Lots of memory will be negligible also.
I used to have a 233MHZ pentium, so-so graphics card, 2 five and 1/4 inch
hard drives, 1-floppy and a CDROM on a 220Watt supply.

Generally the model number will have the wattage embedded in it.
For example: Model ATX-350-12V
The 350 is the wattage.

Usually the power is equal to the current times the voltage.
You have to watch what you are using on this. As the power supply robs Peter
to pay Paul.
My supply (which is the model above) has 12V at 15Amps max and 5V at 35 Amps
max .. (12*15)+(5*35) = 355 watts. (Generally, this is what you can use to
roughly determine what the wattage of the supply).
It also shows 3.3v at 20A and -5V at .5AMPS and and -12V at .5AMPS
(3.3*20)+(5*.5)+(12*.5)= 72.25
This would give a total wattage as 427Watts but remember the rob Peter to pay
Paul. The supply cannot supply all of the voltages at the max current as it
will blow a fuse.
Now, have I thoroughly confused the issue.

Spoke to soon, once again. I reloaded rather than logout and log back in and I
once again have all of my sound.
Thanks for the tip.
Its been a good weekend. I have SAMBA running (this took me three weeks), VNC
working, my sound is back. I have all of the stuff loaded that I wanted
loaded (with the exception of Bannerblind in Mozilla). Life and Linux MDK9.0

As you said it was worth a shot, however it didn't help.
I can play CDs through the front speakers. I just don't have the back channels
or subwoofer working. I did load the EMUL10K1 which is what I use and it
isn't what was loaded. However, that didn't seem to help.

I spoke to soon. I have most of my sound back.

The good news is that I have SAMBA running the way that I think that it should
after almost three weeks of screwing with it. Can read and write files to and
from the Windows boxes now. Although I have an idea why what I did fixed it,
I am not really sure why it worked.

I have my CDs playing and game sounds in the front speakers. I have all of the
system noises working correctly. The problem is that the back speakers and
the Sub-woofer doesn't work again. I have tried the AUMIX and SOUND CONTROL
settings (which is what I thought fixed it the first time).
Any ideas that I can follow after

[newbie] Sound gone again

2002-12-23 Thread David Williams
Ok,
I am reaching the point that I am not having fun any more.
I installed SAMBA and had it working. I installed Shorewall and broke SAMBA.
In trying to fix SAMBA, I broke my internet connection and Mozilla. Somewhere
in all of this I got my sound working properly.
My problem with SAMBA was a "it should work" type of problem. With that
problem and several other small annoyances that I was having, I did a
reinstall of MDK9.0 and decided I would start fresh.
No Samba, no shorewall, etc. etc. etc.
Updated Mozilla, broke Mozilla, re-installed Mozilla. Everything OK
Now my sound is broke. It will play a CD but nothing else but the backchannels
sound and system sounds won't work. I can't say that it was working at all
after the re-install of 9.0 (that was at 2AM).
I have enabled sound in the control panel and I have run AUMIX and upped the
bar there (this is what fixed the sound the last time).
Did I miss something during my install that I should have gotten.
I have a Sound Blaster Live.
David

I get a "grep: /usr/lib/mozilla-1.1/chrome/local.alias: No such file or
directory"
Then after a couple of seconds I get a Segmentation fault.
Obviously the file it can not find is local.alias and I don't have a clue what
it is for.
As a side issue is there a good scource that "maps" linux. I have yet to
figure out the method to the madness on the different libs and if I had some
idea where to start looking I could probably figure some of this stuff out.

I appreciate the help.
I tryed to load from a terminal window (root and user). It stays blank and
echoes keyboard characters. After a very long time (several minutes) it will
display a blank mozilla window on the screen for about 5 seconds and then it
closes. The terminal then comes back to the prompt. Gnome monitor shows that
it has accumulated almost 300 MBs of memory before it exits.
I am not familiar with gdb and don't know if I have it installed. I will look
into that.

[newbie] Mozilla

2002-12-21 Thread David Williams
In my effort to fix my SAMBA problem, I have somehow broken Mozilla.
This occurred when the system lost the ethernet card and wouldn't connect
online. I get that fixed but Mozilla was broke.
When I run Mozilla, it acts like it is loading and then goes away.
I have the Gnome system monitor running and Mozilla gobbles up a huge chunk of
memory (>256MBytes) before it stops trying to load.
This occurs under root as well as my user name.
Anyone have any ideas that I could try before I go and re-install it.

I got everything working with the biggest problem being shorewall. I have it
removed for the moment. I can read, write, and print files to my Linux system
from the Windows. However, I can only see the disk drives on the windows
system from the Linux system. I have the disks shared under windows. I can
not for the life of me find anything that would prevent me from reading the
shared files on Windows from the Linux PC. This usually means that I have

[newbie] Samba

2002-12-13 Thread David Williams
OK, I give up.
I have a four computer network at home. I am running Linux on mine and Win98
on the other three. I have been using Samba so I can copy files and etc and
to share a printer on my computer with the others.

Everything has been working fine and now my computer and printer can't be seen
on the net. (I have very recently changed the monitor settings from 800X600
to 1024X768 and got my background sound to work.) That is the only thing
that I have done.

Under SWAT smb is running and nmb is not if I try to start nmb I get the
errors below logged to the log.nmbd file.

I have no idea what is failing or how to fix it or where to look to find out
how to fix it.
