You open Kmail by opening Kmail.
You did not open Kmail by opening Kcontact first.

If you do not want the error message open Kcontact and that will take you
 directly to Kmail

Oh wow!
I've been googling for this error all my life. Thanks you very much SOTL.

Try enigma if you like puzzles.and of course sirtet if you like

Thank you all for all the suggestions. I have fun playing all these new games.
I especially like alienbuster, however the game ends after killing two

I still have several games to try, alienpool, amphetamine, alephone (notice

[newbie] What prevents me from moving to Suse92

2005-03-23 Thread Fajar Priyanto
Dear all,
I don't want to start a flame war, but I just want you to know, that there is
ONE thing that prevents me from moving to Suse92.
As you know, I've dualbooted my notebook with Suse92 now. And actually I like
it very much. You can say that it's kind of Ahhh.. Woooww..

However, after a couple of weeks of observation, there is one thing that keeps
me using Mdk, that is THIS LIST. Sure, I've joined the Suse's list too, but,
the feelings aren't just the same. I guess I've helplessly given my loyalty
to Mdk. :)

P.S. The KDE3.4 on mdk10.1 also contributes to it.

Okay, I've got it all downloaded. Here's a short stories of what happened
then:
1. I opened https://localhost:8443, connection refused. Apparently it runs on
a separate instance of apache called httpd2-naat. I ran it and it showed.
2. But the page only showed: Looks like you have naatd running. Congrats
3. I googled around but couldn't find anything related.
4. Out of luck, I opened https://localhost:8443/index.php and there was it,
the login screen. Wow.
5. Fiddling around a bit and quite impressed by the features. I guess I'll
have to run it on a real testbed machine to get a grip on the confs.

[newbie] Fwd: [linux-aktivis] [JOKE] The Creation (Microsoft Style)

2005-03-15 Thread Fajar Priyanto
The Creation (Microsoft Style)

1. In the beginning GOD created the Bit and the Byte. And from those he
created the Word.

2. And there were two Bytes in the Word; and nothing else existed. And God
separated the One from the Zero; and he saw it was good.

3. And God said - Let the Data be; And so it happened. And God said - Let
the Data go to their proper places. And he created floppy disks and hard
disks and compact disks.

4. And God said - Let the computers be, so there would be a place to put
floppy disks and hard disks and compact disks. Thus God created computers
and called them hardware.

5. And there was no Software yet. But God created programs; small and big.
And told them - Go and multiply yourselves and fill all the Memory.

6. And God said - I will create the Programmer; And the Programmer will make
new programs and govern over the computers and programs and Data.

7. And God created the Programmer; and put him at Data Center; And God
showed the Programmer the Catalog Tree and said You can use all the volumes
and subvolumes but DO NOT USE Windows.

8. And God said - It is not Good for the programmer to be alone. He took a
bone from the Programmer's body and created a creature that would look up at
the Programmer; and admire the Programmer; and love the things the
Programmer does; And God called the creature: the User.

9. And the Programmer and the User were left under the naked DOS and it was
Good.

10. But Bill was smarter than all the other creatures of God. And Bill said
to the User - Did God really tell you not to run any programs ?

11. And the User answered - God told us that we can use every program and
every piece of Data but told us not to run Windows or we will die.

12. And Bill said to the User - How can you talk about something you did not
even try. The moment you run Windows you will become equal to God. You will
be able to create anything you like by a simple click of your mouse.

13. And the User saw that the fruits of the Windows were nicer and easier to
use. And the User saw that any knowledge was useless - since Windows could
replace it.

14. So the User installed the Windows on his computer; and said to the
Programmers that it was good.

15. And the Programmer immediately started to look for new drivers. And God
asked him - What are you looking for? And the Programmer answered - I am
looking for new drivers because I can not find them in the DOS. And God said
- Who said you need drivers? Did you run Windows? And the Programmer said -
It was Bill who told us to !

16. And God said to Bill - Because of what you did you will be hated by all
the creatures. And the User will always be unhappy with you. And you will
always sell Windows.

17. And God said to the User - Because of what you did, the Windows will
disappoint you and eat up all your Resources; and you will have to use lousy
programs; and you will always rely on the Programmer's help.

18. And God said to the Programmer - Because you listened to the User you
will never be happy. All your programs will have errors and you will have to
fix them and fix them to the end of time.

19. And God threw them out of the Data Center and locked the door and
secured it with a password.

20. GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT.

Re: [newbie] Installing Linux on extended partition (logical drive)

2005-03-10 Thread Fajar Priyanto
On Thursday 10 March 2005 01:13 am, Mikkel L. Ellertson wrote:
I tried it first, but lilo complained about 'no root partition found'

Let me guess - the second copy of lilo is the one that complained,
right? If so, check your /etc/lilo.conf in Suse, and make sure it is
correct. Make sure you run lilo in Suse after you make any changes in
that copy of the config file. The thing you have to remember here is
that you will be using two separate lilo installs to boot Suse. The
version from Mandrake handles booting Mandrake, and Windows. To boot
Suse, it will hand control over to the Suse lilo install, and it will
 handle booting Suse.

No, the one that complained is Mdk's lilo. That's why then I googled and found
the way to 'load' Suse's lilo from Mdk by mounting the partition in Mdk.

As far as the Mandrake version of lilo knows, it could be booting any OS
when it uses the other=/dev/hda10 entry.
Yes, that is why. I am surprised it even boots. If the old version of
the kernel and initial RAM disk were removed as part of the upgrade,
then the only reason it still boots is that the space they use on the
disk has not been overwritten by new data.

The thing you have to understand about lilo is that it is really two
separate parts. The part you run from Linux understands the file system,
and configures things for the part that actually boots the system. The
part that boots the system does not understand the file system. All it
know is where the information it wants is located on the disk. You gave
it this information when you ran lilo in Linux. But if you make changes,
you have to run lilo again, to update this information.

With the normal setup, this is not a problem. The package managers in
both Suse and Mandrake take care of running lilo for you when you update
the kernel. But, because you are using the Mandrake copy of lilo to boot
Suse, Yast updates the wrong version of lilo. Mandrake does not take
care of it, because it has no idea that you updated the kernel in Suse.
So you have to do it manually.

I would spend the time getting the version of lilo on /dev/hda10
working, and using the other=/dev/hda10 option to boot Suse. Or I
would consider changing Mandrake to use Grub instead of Lilo. Grub does
understand file systems, so it would handle the kernel changing in Suse
better. You would still have to make sure and update the grub config
files when you change kernels, but at least if would warn you when you
 break things.

Now, if you want a real challenge, install one of the other boot manages
on the MBR, change Mandrake lilo so it installs to your root partition
instead of the MBR, and let the boot manager give you a menu for
Mandrake, Suse, or Windows. There are several options for free boot
managers on freshmeat, or you could go with something like System
 Commander.

 Mikkel

Thank you so much for the very detail explanation Mikkel. I really appreaciate
it. Your explanation opens up a new understanding for me on Linux bootloader.
I will surely experiment it on my spare pc.

On Thursday 10 March 2005 07:13 pm, Mr. Geek wrote:
However, if your hard drive is already partitioned, they only use which

The nice thing is that the restore or full install methods won't do
anything to your Master Boot Record, since Windows detects that the
Master Boot Record is already in use. Lilo is already installed there.
That means that the next time you boot the laptop, Lilo will still be
there, and will only show you the Mandrake-Linux option.

Yes, I experimented with my Acer TM802 too (I had to reinstall and format the
drive several time cause of mistakes). Not every recovery CD will allow you
to resize the partition though. In case of Acer, they allow it, so it makes
thing easier. And it will not destroy the Lilo. Lol, I once wanted to send my
notebook to the service center, but afraid that the guarantee would be void
if they know I installed linux.

No problem. That's exactly what should be there. Once you've booted back
into Linux, start up your Mandrake Control Center (a.k.a. MCC), and add
the 10Gb Windows partition by creating a mount point for it. You're not
obligated to use the Mandrake default mount-point, so feel free to be
creative. Just don't mount it inside the /root home folder!
Windows will not format the remaining space as FAT32.

But Mandrake will! Leave it to Linux to solve a Microsoft problem! LOL!

Yes, linux is certainly very friendly :)

By using Linux to format your remaining space as FAT32, you'll be able
to access it from Mandrake AND from Windows without any problems. Once
that's partitioned, formatted and mounted in MCC, remember to update
Lilo as well. That way, Windows will be added to your boot list in Lilo.

This is a good practice indeed. I have my D drive in windows as FAT32.

Thanks Mr. Geek. Your explanation is crystal clear.

This is also the reason as you know why I try to migrate to Suse by

But using Yast, I can't find the network printer either :(
I can add the printer directly by typing //pcname/printername, but CUPS
doesn't ask me for printer brand and type at all. And, when I try to print to
it, the data transfer lamp on the printer blinks but nothing is printed.

Can you help me here pls? What steps should I take to add network printer in

[newbie] Installing Linux on extended partition (logical drive)

2005-03-08 Thread Fajar Priyanto
Hi all,
For those of you who are interested in installing Linux on extended partition
(or in MS terms we call it logical drive), I've successfully do it on
installing Suse92 on hda10, where there is already MS Windows, and Mandrake.
Here's the brief steps:
1. Install Windows (with 2 partitions in my case)
2. Install Mandrake on its own partition (with 5 partitions in my case, with 1
partition I call /data -- hda10)
3. Install Suse92 on /data. This is the caveat: -- choose LILO (you can use
grub too, but I don't know yet the syntax), -- install LILO on the root
partition of /hda10, -- format hda10 with any filesystem as long as Mandrake
can read it. Suse will reboot once we finish the first installation step.
4. When rebooted, go into Mandrake. Modify /etc/lilo.conf with this:
image=/data/boot/vmlinuz
label=Suse92
root=/dev/hda10
initrd= /data/boot/initrd
vga=788
read-only

Modify the above lines that suits your environment. Run lilo -v to see if
there's any error. If there isn't, you good to go. Reboot.

You will see in the LILO menu that there's Suse92 entry. Choose it, and
Voila! You've got Suse92! You dont even bother to create swap partition, Suse
will use the swap from Mandrake.

I've made an artikel about it in http://linux2.arinet.org (Indonesian)
HTH.

The way you have it set up, if you update the kernel in Suse, you then
have to boot Mandrake, update /etc/lilo.conf, and run lilo before you
can boot the new kernel in Suse. Also, if you want to have more then one
kernel in Suse, you will have to add the entries in the Mandrake copy of
lilo.conf, and run lilo from Mandrake. Also, if you wipe out the boot
partition in Mandrake, you will not be able to boot Suse from the hard

Ah interesting, no wonder when I update my Suse kernel with Yast Online

Hi all,
I'm trying to use CUPS through mcc. When it searched for network printer, it

Could you give me some direction? Does CUPS automatically detect network

Thanks.

You can try by plugging out any external hardware that might be connected via

Sure, just look into the /tools directory in the CD. There's a tool to make a

Setup the source in the remote pc using ftp or httpd, boot the pc you want to

Hi Peter,
You can pass that line into kernel booting.
When the boot loader screen shows up, press esc, and type that line.
append = parport=0x378,7
Continue booting. Once inside linux, you can make that permanent in
the /etc/lilo.conf then type lilo on the console to update the conf.

For a basic setup which in my opinion is very good, install iptables and
shorewall. This will get you started. I use iptables and firestarter
which can be found here. www.fs-security.com/
The thing to keep in mind is, iptables is what makes the rules and
shoewall or firestarter is just a front end to help you more easily
 create the rules.
There are others on this list that are far more familiar with iptables
 and shorewall than I.

 Regards,
 Dan Gordon

Yes shorewall is a good one. I appreciate Mandrake includes it. A little
confusing at first, but once we read the tutorial, it's not that hard to
setup. And Tom Eastep - the writer - is very active in the shorewall list.
However, don't be offended by his sharp words though (especially when he
knows we use mandrake) :) He's actually a very nice person, really :) His
sharp words come because he's also a good writer on the documentation, so our
problem regarding shorewall mostly has been covered in it.

clients. I'm setting this up for a medium-large buisness, as they've
had no success with their own Windows-based mail servers in front of
their firewall ;-). Sendmail and Courier-IMAP-pop are installed and
 running.

 Thanx in advance,

Looks nice, but haven't tried it.

Hi Eric,
1. edit /var/lib/pgsql/data/pg_hba.conf
change/remark the connection authentification method, and add this line:
local all all trust -- it won't ask you any password anymore
2. restart postgresql: service postgresql restart
3. su postgres
4. psql -U postgres -d template1
5. alter user nameofuser with password 'thepassword';
6. \q -- to quit
7. exit
8. restore the pg_hba.conf back to the original setting.
9. restart posgresql

[newbie] I found a way how to force Kmail to open Firefox properly

2004-12-16 Thread Fajar Priyanto
Hi folks,
This is hilarious! Remember, my previous thread on why I couldn't make Kmail
to launch Firefox properly because somehow the %U setting in Mozilla
Firefox.desktop (Exec=soundwrapper /usr/bin/mozffremote %U) got dissapeared
often.

So, out of frustation, I chown:
/home/me/.kde/share/applnk-mdk/Internet/Web Browsers/Mozilla Firefox.desktop
file into 'root'

And now, Kmail always launches Firefox properly :))

Hi Josh,

I can say without a doubt that had it not been for the newbie list I

Well, I don't know if there is any problem with RAM or not, but I don't
think so. This system has worked for almost 6 months as server 24 hours
with FC3 and Redhat Enterprise. Anyway how can I check the RAM ?

You can check the RAM using a program called memtest (google for it). But it
will take a lng time to finish. The fastest way I think is to borrow some
RAM from other PC and put it into the troubled box to see whether the
installation goes smoothly.

Anyway, the rule of thumb in doing dual boot:
- separate the partition/disk
- install ms windows first, linux last (otherwise winblowz will blow linux

- if it's linux-linux, install the bootloader of the second os into root
partition (don't mbr).

For detailed step, you can search this list or google.

[newbie] Download the rpm directly instead of urpmi

2004-12-08 Thread Fajar Priyanto
Hi folks,
Can I download the rpm directly from Mdk's update repository and then install
it manually instead of using urpmi?

The reason is that I want to download the rpm through my colo server first (it
has better speed), and then download it to my notebook (the speed should be
much better, since it's in local internet exchange), and then install it.
Thanks.

 3. Our server will be a Web-Server (Apache), Print and Database (MySQL)

mandrake can handle it or not ? FC3 could.

If it is only for those servers, I suggest you not to install everything,
especially xwindows. Don't you agree? Because I think the one that makes it
hang all the time is xwindows related, well.. since the pc is an old one.

Anyway, nobody's perfect, including mdk (or any other Os'es). But talking

My real suggestion is: try install mdk on a decent machine, and you'll love

[newbie] How is doing this? Firefox won't be default browser

2004-12-02 Thread Fajar Priyanto
Hi all,
This is really got me into my nerve.
I've made Firefox 1.0 as my default browser using KDE menu File Association
txt html, and use %U in the application command so that it can open url
correctly from Kmail.

But, every time I run Firefox, it always asks whether it wanted to be default
browser, I answer Yes everytime. The problem occurs when somehow I open
Konqueror to browse local file, etc... This WILL BROKE the %U option, thus
Firefox won't open url from Kmail correctly.

Can I make the %U permanent? Does KDE refuse to let us kill it's konqueror as
default browser?
Thanks.

can you install mc (midnight commander)?
F4 puts you in edit mode, F2 is save.

Or, you can still use vi, for basic file editing, here's the keys (remeber
that you'll need to be root to work on /etc/files):
- to start editing file: vi somefile
- once inside, to modify it press: i
- to save the modification, press: [esc] :w
- to quit, press: [esc] q!
- to save the modification and then quit, press: [esc] :wq

You'd notice that when you press [esc] the blinking cursor will move into the
lower right of your screen, and when you press :w, etc, it will show there.
HTH,

 Hi all,

Why there are only iso images in download pages of
 mandrake?
Is there any way to download rpms?

Of course, they may be found in rpmfind.net but first
speed of this site is low and second, it hasn't
complete list of eache CD rpms.

Hi Habib,
ISO file is the image file for burning into CD. So, when 'burned', it will be
extracted into all the individual files like you want it.

Never let it be said that I don't bring interesting problems to the
list! This time, the problem makes no sense, unless someone has written
a boot-sector virus and included it on the Mandrake 10.1 Community CD's.

I'm tempted to replace the m/board in case that's the problem. I'm
wondering if it might be the IDE controller or something. It might also
explain the drive (CRC errors) I had on the other drive.

Hardware problems are always specific and difficult to solve by others. But
one thing I'm sure that it isn't because of boot sector virus.

Also, the best approach in solving hardware problems is to localized the
problem. Is it the harddisk? Mobo? Memory? The CD?

Looks like you're having a hard time, Lanman. Try to take 5, drinking coffee,
reading some jokes, sleep, etc. I have my share of burnout too, especially
when it was 3am, the energy level was very low, thus I accidentally wiped out
all my data in the ntfs partitions when setting up a dual boot (which I've
done this many times before).
Goodluck.
