[newbie] Installing 10.1 from HD- questions

2004-11-11 Thread Fred Fraley
I'm downloading the DVD-ISO and am going to copy its contents into an
empty partition. I plan to add a line to the boot loader pointing to
that partition.

1. I have two paths to vmlinuz in the isolinux directory, alt0 or
alt1. Does anyone know which I should point to, or how to determine
the correct one?

2. When I tried to do this using a floppy with a grub image, I kept
getting an error showing file not found. It was also showing
Filesystem type ext2fs partition type 0x83. But I have, according to
MCC, Journalised filesystem ext3 (0x483). Do I need to reformat in
ext2fs for the installation, or should the install kernel support the
ext3 partition?

Couple of reasons behind all this -- CD burner not working in linux,
and I have maybe just enough room on the old MS partition (burner
works under their windowing OS) for 1 CD-ROM ISO at a time. Not
worth fixing CD burner if the new install will do it for me, and
certainly not worth rebooting six times and twiddling my thumbs while
the CD burns.

Thanks,
Fred

Now if I could just remember why I made a 14 gig root partition last
time. 121 megs used. H.

[newbie] DSL modem/firewall/router vs. Firewall vs. ???

2004-11-04 Thread Fred Fraley
Should I rely on a DSL gateway with NAT, or do I NEED a dedicated
destop for a firewall?

I recently got DSL with a Westell Versalink 327W
modem/router/hub/gateway, which has a built in firewall with NAT.
The Versalink has a DHCP service built in. I also have the option of
disabling the firewall and passing through the IP address. This, if
I understand correctly, would make the Versalink simply a modem/hub
and my desktop machine would be directly accessible to/from the DSL
connection.
Assuming I am connecting two more desktops, both normally running
linux but with a MS(tm) windowing(used generically) OS installed,
which is the better arrangement? I am not planning on running any
servers except as may be necessary in the house (printing, sharing
files).
Since the MS OS will undoubtedly run occasionally, I am inclined to
run the security as much as possible beforehand, from the Versalink.
I'd rather not run a dedicated machine for a firewall. I'm not
planning on doing anything fancy and am not all that inclined to
devote a lot of time to it, though I do have a couple of older boxes
with NICs laying around.
Opinions?

Thanks,
Fred

[newbie] Where does grpmi go w/o Update?

2003-08-17 Thread Fred Fraley
Running Mandrake Update, grabbing 29 megs or so over 56k modem. Got
an error message box, now Update is gone according to the process
list in ksysguard. The DL is chugin merrily along according to the
grpmi progress bar, though.
So, I'm trying to figure out how it will end up. Will the update
miraculously happen? Will the rpms end up in a cache somewhere? Or
will I have to wait out another download?
If I get a response in time, is there something I should or can do to
rescue the downloads?

[newbie] Coordinating dialup and cable connections

2003-02-13 Thread Fred Fraley
Just called my dialup ISP and asked how to route all connections to their
news server thriough my modem. I want to use my cable connection for all
other addresses. Told them I was using Mandrake 9.
Their tech support said the only practical way was to physically disconnect
the cable modem when using the modem connection, since my computer would not
handle both when accessing the news server. I repeated it back, stressing
physically disconnect the network cable?. Yep. I could not use the two
connections simultaneously
I thought there was a routing table I could edit to say go here via
/dev/eth0 and go there via /dev/modem?
Help? TIA!!

Background -- my longtime dialup ISP has a newsserver accessible only if
connected through one of their IP addresses, and inaccessible if connecting
with a foreign IP address. IOW, I could use my cable connection, telnet to
APK.net, login and read through the shell connection since the news server
would see an internal IP, but cannot DL the posts into Pan since it sees the
connection from Zoominternet. I prefer an offline reader.

It could be several things - path statements, lib path statements or

OK, I ended up doing this, KDE now loads within 10-12 seconds from the time I

BTW, this probably rules out Crossover Plugin as a culprit, since I doubt it

Re: [newbie] Very slow loading KDE and gnome

2003-01-30 Thread Fred Fraley
Many, many thanks to all for the sugestions. My thoughts as I sort through
them...

I am using a Duron 850 with 512 megs. The system boots fine. KDE through
Debian loads MUCH faster on a slower machine with less memory, so to me
that rules out memory/CPU and points to configuration, either software or
hardware. This seems further narrowed to software by nearly instantaneous
loading of IceWM and WindowManager, and for that matter faster loading of KDE
and Gnome a while back.
The fact the problems exist only with the desktops as opposed to plain window
managers and X11 itself seems to me to rule out kernel problems. But a
question -- am I understanding correctly that a desktop does not interact
with the kernel services directly, but only through other managers/libraries
shared by other programs? Sorry, I started too late in life to have an
instinctive grasp of the details.
The Crossover thing, along with another mention of stopping the scan for
nsplugins, seems a good point. I'll try that this weekend.
Deleting my user specific KDE config files and letting it rebuild them is
another do-it. I'll see how another login on this same machine works first,
but the root install of Crossover may obscure differences caused by Crossover
or the plugins.
What works better on KDE and Gnome? Mainly the more integrated menuing
system, taskbar, configuration of personal preferences, etc. It's easier to
get what I want how I want it. I'm sure the plain window managers will do
it, just a bit harder to get there and may involve installing more geegaws.
All in all, I want it simple to use, small, and full-featured. Typical Yank,
I don't want to settle for two of three ;-)

Still open for suggestions, and I'll try to update what happens with the two
most obvious maybes.

[newbie] Very slow loading KDE and gnome

2003-01-29 Thread Fred Fraley
When I start KDE, from the graphic login screen, it takes 1:10-1:15 before I
get to the KDE splash screen, then another 1:00 on just the loading
peripherals section. Everything else seems to load fairly quickly. Gnome is
about as slow, but I haven't timed it. IceWM and WindowMaker load in just a
few seconds.
Is there any way I can generate a log file showing each item loaded with the
time so I can see where the delay is? Anyone with another suggestion? I use
IceWM most of the time, but some things just seem to work better on KDE or
gnome.

[newbie] Asking for CD - What file does it want?

2002-09-26 Thread Fred Fraley

When I try setting a HP Laserjet IIp+ up through MDK Control Center it asks
Please insert the medium named disc 1 Mandrake Linux 9.0 beta4 Installation
CD (x86) (cdrom1) on device [/dev/hdc] . Now, that's fine, except I don't
have that CD, or even the ISO, anymore.
How can I tell what file or package is really needed? I surely, between the
final release and a mirror of Cooker, have whatever file it needs or a newer
version of the whole package.
What I can see in the output window is:

Sep 26 14:01:08 acs-24-154-2-202 drakconf[3806]: ### Program is starting ###
Sep 26 14:01:15 acs-24-154-2-202 drakconf[3816]: ### Program is starting ###

So it says things were installed, not installing.

BTW, the printer set up fine through CUPS, but printed only a little

[newbie] Changing hda

2002-09-20 Thread Fred Fraley

Last time I tried this I managed to lose my /home partition, so I'm going to
ask for help first, this time :-) How do I manage this without losing
anything?
I'm going to remove /dev/hda, the original 30 gig HD, from this machine. I
am keeping /dev/hdb (60 gig), which will become the only HD on the system for
the moment.
At this time the system boots from hda. hda has everything on it except one
user's home directory, /home/dad.
I have plenty of room to play with while switching things. Usage is:

[root@[EMAIL PROTECTED] ffraley]$ df
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 3.4G 1.4G 1.9G 41% /
/dev/hda6 15G 9.6G 4.4G 69% /home
/dev/hdb1 11G 132M 11G 2% /home/dad
/dev/hda1 11G 8.7G 1.4G 87% /mnt/windows

I am not going to be reinstalling MSwindows on this machine but it does need
to be on the 30 gig HD and working (a relative term) when things are
finished. I will also be dual-booting MDK from the 30 gig after installing
it on my wife's new machine.
Can someone point me to a cheat sheet for this, or list the steps?

I'd like to offer an apology for my tone to daRcmaTTeR and the list. I
posted a message Problem with updates at end of installation, and got a
bit, well, pissy at daRcmaTTeR's response to me.
On another users tip, I looked back at daRcmaTTeR's posts and see he is not a
typical newbie kicker, but very helpful indeed. Though I scan through the
collected posts every couple of days, I don't usually take the time to note
the sender and had not noticed his history.
In hindsight it might not have been clear I ws not asking for updates, only
commenting on a part of the installer and asking whether I would be missing
anything significant if I blew it off. It may indeed have appeared I was
asking why there were no updates for a beta release.

[newbie] 9.0.b3-Problem with updates at end of installation

2002-08-20 Thread Fred Fraley

Has anyone else had a problem with the update part tripping up if they
selected an item from the list? One example, autoconf was checked, and I
also checked autoconf.x.x.. It immediately tossed me an error mesage and
took me back to the start of the update process. Happened with several items
several times. So many I (thought I) had the keystrokes memorized. (the
following is purely my fault, the flaky fickle fingers of fred strike again.
Well, actually the thumb.)

Eventually, I clicked the wrong button and did not update the installed
packages. And, as in some of the previous betas, the update utility does not
seem to work.
Is there any way, short of sitting through the entire install again, to get
the updates?
Does anyone know of anything significant in the updates? I noticed there
were quite a few items checked, including some I use.

Thank you,
Fred

first, since it's a beta release you're guaranteed there are going to be
things that don't work. second, it IS the very bleeding edge of the cooker
release so what updated packages are you expecting to find for this?

Thou should remain calm. I'm not complaining, only asking.
First, I am under the impression beta releases need to be used to find bugs.
Users installing betas in non-critical settings and discussing problems is a
desirable thing in linux. Late betas should be tested by a cross-section of
all users to simulate the final release. Iimproving the install and
configure routines is a major target for Mandrake. What part of that is
wrong?
Second, I don't know what packages. Mandrake included the update function
in the beta installation routine. Youi'll have to ask them, it was their
idea.
Third, I thought this list was for asking if someone else shared a problem
and knew a workaround.

[newbie] msec settings

2002-04-25 Thread Fred Fraley

I have a single machine, no local network, with a broadband (cable modem)
connection. Using msec, level 3, which uses a default umask of 022.
Is there any reason to create a perm.local file rather than simply edit the
settings in the /usr/share/msec/perm.xx files? I want to change the umask
for the entire /mnt/windows tree to allow rwx for all local users.

Currently is is controlled in perm.3 by (I think)
/mnt/ root.root 755
so could I just add
/mnt/windows/* root.windows770
to give rwx access to local users of the group windows and wall off as far as
possible all access to someone who managed a remote login?
If not, a brief explanation of why would be greatly appreciated, along with
a pointer to further explanation.

And a second question. When I get the household network up I will be using
SNF, smoothwall, or something similar on a P-133/32 megs ram/1.2gig HD for a
router. Should each of the local machines continue to use msec, will it be
unnecessary, or can I obviate msec by running something else on the router?

[newbie] msec --PERM.LOCAL file format

2002-04-23 Thread Fred Fraley

Can someone point me to the format for the perm.local file for msec? I find
references to same as ... but the files referred to don't exist on my
system.

Specifically -- at level 3 the umask of 022 doesn't allow write access to my
/mnt/windows directory for wine. I have created a windows group and added
the group to user profiles Now I want to change the umask to 007.
I can umount and remount to get things working, but msec's resetting back to
the defaults is frustrating.

installed it all the way back to Slackware and Yggdrasil from floppies
(kernel 0.9something as I recall) Wow, what progress!!
My current problem:

I can open Agent from a terminal (Konsole) with the command line
/mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe

I tried that as a script (never wrote a script before).
did chmod -e agent
did chmod a -e agent
added #! to beginning of line
and other items from various books I have lying around.
I am shown as the owner. User, group, and all have read and execute
permissions. User also has write permission set.
Tried checking needs terminal to run.

Terminal ends up with error message
Gdk-Warning **: locale not supported by C library

I came to the conclusion that command won't work alone because I must have a
terminal session open to execute the command line from. As Run in DOS
Window (Don't be shy about correcting that assumption, because I think I
already addressed that above)
So I tried Plan B. Create new link to application on desktop. Set
permissions as above.

Command line as above returns
Couldn't launch /mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe

Command line
Konsole -e /m-e /mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe
flashes an open window and closes it. Task bar shows Agent, changes to
Konsole, and disappears.

Command line
xterm -e /mnt/windows/program\ files/agent/agent.exe
returns
Can't execvp /mnt/windows/program\: No such file or directory
Interesting that the window stays open, the error appears to be quite
different, and the error appears to occur at the \, which here is a release
for the following space in the command line and seems handled with aplomb
with the other approaches..

So I am becoming tired, confused, frustrated.
Hints greatly appreciated.
