Does anyone know of such a card for Linux? Given what some people have
said about nVidia drivers, I would prefer something other than a GeForce

I guess I should get a new mobo, something with an AGP slot...

Anyone know if EverQuest will run under WineX? That's really about all
that keeps me from getting rid of Windows completely.

Well, that and Scorched Earth (old DOS shareware game). :)

Of course, there's also which OS you would prefer to use, if stability
is not an issue. I personally favor the Mac, hardware- software- and
OS-wise, but some of my reasons may not apply to most people (I'm a
professional musician, for one).

> and there's the old argument about software availability.

Which begs two questions:

1) How much of the available software will you actually use?
2) How much of the available software is any good?

Everything I do on a computer, I find I would rather do on a Mac, with
the exception of a few games I play that aren't available for the Mac.
It's partly because of the quality of Mac-specific software, and partly
because the Mac is better-suited for some of those tasks, but it's also
partly because I even find the Mac more aesthetically pleasing (and I'm
not talking about all the fruity iMac colors). It may not sound very
important, but it makes using a computer that much more enjoyable for
me.

But again, that's a personal preference, YMMV.

Then again, I don't know how much all this matters to you (the original
poster); how often would you be running Linux again? :)

I've never had a problem running Epplets, whether as root or as a user
(well, other than the Epplets menu having more Epplets listed than what
LM actually installed on my machine). However, I will guess that you
are correct, you need to add the path (and your users need to add it to
their paths). Also, if it is not already so, make the Epplets directory,
and the Epplets themselves, group executable.

Again, I don't remember having to do this when I ran Epplets as a user,
but go ahead and mkdir it, what's the harm? :)

BTW, in case you don't already know, Sourceforge now has an E-Users ML,
so that people like me who don't really understand much of what the
people in the E-Devel ML are talking about have a place for Q&A. I
think the E web site (www.enlightenment.org) has the link for joining.

I've been getting two copies of several of the messages from this mailing

sent to the list, and one was what he cc'd to me. But I received a third

It's great that you're trying to get the Americans on this list to think
about the situation from a different PoV, but you're starting to sound
just as overzealous as some of them.

IMHO the inaction of the American people stems from ignorance, or the
belief that our brand of democracy really works (which might be one and
the same). The U.S. Government is not really "for the people" - at
least, not the way it is supposed to be.

Either way, I do not dare put the American people on the same level as
terrorists. The Government, possibly, but not the people.

But ideals do not exist (if they did, Communism would actually work),
and we do as best we can. The U.S. Government did what it had to do to
keep the Soviets in check, I suppose. I don't know all the facts, so
while I may not be entirely happy with my government, I am not about to
condemn it.

[newbie] resolutions in XF86Config

choices:

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1152x864
1280x1024

Under Windows, I can run at 1280x960, but not 1280x1024. Maybe I'm weird,
but I want to run LM at 1280x960, because 1280x1024 isn't exactly 4:3 like
all the other resolutions. Is there some way I can edit my XF86Config to
be able to set my resolution to 1280x960? I see a lot of stuff about
horizontal and vertical refresh rates, which I don't know enough about to
mess with...

BTW, LM detects my card as Voodoo 3 (generic), if that matters.

Oh yeah, i'm running LM 7.1, HP Brio 500MHz Celeron.

Until E 0.17 and EFM come out, you'll have to use another file manager,
like GMC, Nautilus, DFM, KFM, etc. Or you can open a terminal window, of
course, if you don't mind working at the command line.

I'm not sure what you mean by shortcuts, though. You can edit many of the
menus by going into ~/.enlightenment and editing any *.menu file with your
favorite text editor (vim, pico, etc.). Or if you want desktop icon-type
shortcuts, edit the contents of the .gnome-desktop/ folder (ln -s ...) and
starting up GMC. You can do the same with KFM, but I forget where the
desktop shortcuts are. And I'm too lazy to install DFM - I'd rather just
wait for EFM, and use GMC in the meantime. :)

If you haven't already, try reading Enlightenment Help. Middle-click on
the desktop and it should be in the menu.

It's not better, just different. But here are some reasons why I prefer

1) It is one of, if not the most configurable window managers around.

2) E has some great features, like the pager, desktop dragging, etc.

3) KDE and Gnome are more "standard" in their approaches (being more like
Win/Mac OS); if I wanted that, I'd have gotten a Mac (actually, I
still want one for doing professional music stuff...).

4) Eye candy, eye candy, eye candy.

I still use KDE as root, however, when total accessibility and ease of
accessibility are all I care about.

$prefix is /usr/local (it should be near the top of configure.in).

Strange though, I didn't have any trouble installing E 0.16.5 a few weeks
ago. You can try changing $prefix to /usr or enabling fsstd, but I have
no idea what the problem really is. My imlib_config is also in /usr/bin,
and I actually tried installing E twice - with and without fsstd enabled -
and it worked fine both times.

I did have one problem though; Linux Mandrake 7.1's graphical login
manager thing was still looking for E in /usr/bin (or wherever LM7.1's
installer CD-ROM puts it), even if I change .xsession to where the new
version of E was installed. I actually renamed the old E (I guess I
should just delete it), and moved the new E to where the old E was. I
really need to clean those duplicate E files up. :)

Same here. I use KDE when running as root. Otherwise, it's Enlightenment
all the way. I can't wait until E 0.17 and EFM are released.

I got the same message with quite a few rpm packages. I tried to install
a newer version of kpackage, but I'm having trouble installing the last
lib file. What kind of trouble? I need a newer version of kpackage to
install it! Looks like I'll have to find the *.tar.gz version, if such a
thing exists.

Re: [newbie] when new kernel... ?

2001-01-07 Thread Jesse C. Chang

It's been released. There's a 24MB .tar.gz of the installer for download.
I forgot where I got my copy, but I think any of the Linux news sites will
have a link.

I haven't installed it yet, because I don't have the required versions of
the other files that are necessary for 2.4.0 to work. Well, I have them,
but I had a little trouble installing them, and moved on to more pressing
problems. :)

[newbie] SBLive working, but no mixer

2001-01-07 Thread Jesse C. Chang

Someone suggested I turn off Plug-and-Play in BIOS, and that got my sound
card working - when I test the sound card in HardDrake, I can hear Linus's
test-sound-thing. However, clicking on Open results in the following error
message:

sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': no such device

Then HardDrake plays a test sound, but I don't hear it.

And when I shutdown, I get the following:

Saving mixer settings aumix: error opening mixer [FAILED]

Also, here's what happens when I try to launch some sound-related epplets
in Enlightenment 0.16.5:

Emix - Mixer device open failed

  E-Mixer - Couldn't open mixer device /dev/mixer

  E-SD - /dev/dsp: No such device
 Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I never used to get any of the five error messages above, and the epplets
of course all ran fine. Somewhere in my fiddling (just following what the
linuxnewbie.org and linux-mandrake.com articles say, really), I started
getting these error messages, and they didn't go away when I got SBLive
working.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Jesse

I haven't gotten sound to work at all, aside from terminal beeps, which have
nothing to do with the sound card, right?

Considering how much talk there has been about getting SBLive to work, with
no mention of some inexplicable conflict with E, I don't think I'm going to
uninstall E and settle for another WM unless I absolutely have to. And if
it gets to that point, I'll be sure to post to the enlightenment-devel list
asking for help first.

[newbie] addendum to SBLive problem

2001-01-07 Thread Jesse C. Chang

I forgot to mention:

Sometimes when I log in as a user and start Enlightenment, I get a message
saying Enlightenment could not connect to Esound, and therefore sound is
disabled. When this happens, sound-related epplets can't be used. I'm
guessing this is related to the problem I'm having with getting my SBLive
to work, but I'm not sure, since it doesn't happen all the time.

[newbie] MS optical mouse

2001-01-07 Thread Jesse C. Chang

Has anyone gotten a Microsoft USB Optical IntelliMouse to work? Again, I'm
using Mandrake 7.1...

I am currently using the mouse as a PS/2 mouse (with an adaptor). The two
side buttons don't work of course, and wheel-up / wheel-down do the same
things as the left and right buttons, respectively. If I can't get the side
buttons programmed, that's not too big a deal, though it would be nice to
get them working. (I remember reading an article online about configuring a
"7-button" mouse (the wheel being three buttons instead of a button and an
axis), but I couldn't really understand it. I also don't know the path of
the file I am supposed to edit - I might not have know even the filename.)
However, I'd like to get the wheel working properly (I use Enlightenment
0.16.5, and in E the wheel is supposed to switch between desktops). I'm
also wondering if there's any advantage to using the mouse as USB instead of
PS/2 (aside from not needing an adaptor) (the mouse stopped working when I
plugged it into the USB port and selected "USB Mouse (3 or more buttons)" in
MouseDrake). Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance,
Jesse

[newbie] SBLive modprobe problem

2001-01-07 Thread Jesse C. Chang

(I'm running 7.1, and my CPU is a 500MHz Intel Celeron; my sound card is a
SoundBlaster Live! MP3+)

I tried installing the driver, according to the linuxnewbie.org article and
whatever README-type file was included with the driver, and using HardDrake
and the suggested mandrakeforum article to try to get it working, and none
of it is working.

Some newbie difficulties with the mandrakeforum article:

http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php3?sid=20010104142752

1) modules.conf - should I rename conf.modules to modules.conf? Also, my
machine has another sound chip built-in; should I delete the lines from
conf.modules that refer to it/its driver/whatever?

2) HardDrake / modprobe emu10k1 - whether I type it in from a prompt, or
click on Test in HardDrake, I get the same message:

  Error in modprobe call!

/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
  /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/emu10k1.o failed
  /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/emu10k1.o: Can't locate module Xi4@HR
  ^ ^
(^: the i has an umlaut instead of a single dot, and the R is in a circle
  (like a "Registered Trademark" symbol))

I have absolutely no idea how to fix this. :(

3) sndconfig - it tells me not to run it from X. Also, it doesn't detect
my card at all. And since it didn't work...

4) kernel-sources / kernel-docs: I read the kernel-docs, and they didn't
help me. Or perhaps I just couldn't understand them. And if I download
the kernel-sources, what am I supposed to do with them?

5) grep - the mandrakeforum article says:

Ok, to find out about a device, I would 'cd' to that directory and do

grep -i -r live! *

What directory is that supposed to be? /dev?

6) modprobe emu10k1 - see 2, above.

I also get [FAILED] when I boot my machine.

Boy do I need help...

Thanks in advance,
Jesse
