[newbie] modem problem
I just bought a USR 5610b modem that was recommended by several knowledgeable folks to work fine with Linux. It seems to want to use Com 4, which I assume is /dev/ttys3. When I look in the /dev directory ttys3 is linked to pty/s51. I suppose that's why my comm and fax programs complain that the modem is either busy or "locked"? Should I remove that link? And if so, how? Thanks, Jonathan Dlouhy = Registered Linux user #264482 Powered by Mandrake 10.0 Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] LM 9 scsi problem
I installed Mandrake 9 yesterday, no apparent problems. I tried using my HP 5p SCSI scanner today and xsane can't see it. If I do "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" both my SCSI devices are recognized. I have a CD burner set up as IDE-SCSI that had been working fine along with the scanner. Now neither work. I notice when I boot the system the first message I get is that the scanner SCSI card driver doesn't get loaded, then I get "insmod exited abruptly". Where should start looking for the problem? It's beginning to look like a general SCSI problem. [newbie] 8.2 breaking things
I just installed Mandrake 8.2. Everything looks okay, except for the fact that there are several programs I have that ran under 8.1 that when I install them in 8.2 come up with dependency errors. One program is WordPerfect 8; it won't install at all. Another is Opera 6, which is looking for a file I can't find. I just reinstalled 8.1 and all is well again. Are other people having these kinds of problems? Incidentally, the problems I'm having crop up with a clean install as well as an upgrade from 8.1. How do I get LILO out of here ? Just boot from your Windows 98 floppy and type "fdisk /mbr" at the a: prompt. - Original Message - From: Charles Hixson To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, July 18, 1999 8:43 PM Subject: [newbie] Linux Configuration Tool What's the name of the Linux configuration tool? I got into it once, but now I can't remember what it was called. I know that it's something like linuxConfig or configlinux or l-configure or...? I could do what I'm trying to do now by just editing the lilo configuration, but I also want to manage account passwords, etc. all of which this tool claimed to do. But I didn't write its name down, because it was so obvious that I'd always remember it. ;-(| Thanks. [newbie] kernel upgrade
I installed the latest kernel RPM, 2.2.9-27 and there's no problem installing, recompiling, etc. The problem I'm having is with the modules. I do a "make modles" and "make modules_install" and the modules get installed to the old module directory instead of the new one. Any ideas? Or does it matter? Thanks! -- Jonathan Dlouhy Principal Oboe, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Windows Error 018: Unrecoverable error. System destroyed.

I've just had good luck with that modem. Your experience with the Sportster is certainly good news as those modems did have problems a while back. I also had a Supra FaxModem that worked great also, but I don't know what their stuff is like now. It's certainly a lot cheaper. The one I had also had that neat feature of being able to recognize a fax carrier and route the signal to the appropriate place. I would be interested in knowing what other modems of recent vintage that people are using successfully under Linux.
