Paul, if you're running LM 10 it's on one of the install CDs, the plugin
as well as the standalone program.

[newbie] modem problem

2004-05-08 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy
I just bought a USR 5610b modem that was recommended by several
knowledgeable folks to work fine with Linux. It seems to want to use Com
4, which I assume is /dev/ttys3. When I look in the /dev directory ttys3
is linked to pty/s51. I suppose that's why my comm and fax programs
complain that the modem is either busy or "locked"? Should I remove that
link? And if so, how?

That sounds like a plan. Can I put things back the way the are now if I need

Right now ttyS0 is linked to tts/0. Why, I have no idea.

Stephen, here's my linking question if you get a chance. Thanks bro'

Stephen, back to my original question. My fax programs seem to want to
use /dev/ttyS0. I am the lucky owner of  Win/Linmodem. It's currently linked
to /dev/modem,like this;  /dev/modem -> ttySHSF0. Since all of my fax
programs seem to want to use the ttyS0 port is it all right to link ttySHSF0
to ttys0 without getting everything screwed up? Or can I link /dev/modem to
ttyS0 as well? What is the simplest way to mange this, if it's possible...

Boot drive. I want to copy the whole drive to another drive because I want to

[newbie] changing default browser

2002-12-08 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy
I'd like to change my default browser from Konqueror. URLs in mail messages
can be opened from within the message with Konqueror as the default browser.
If I go into "file associations" and change the default browser to anything
else here's what happens: Here's the URL for example,
http://honestreporting.com/a/r/323.asp. With Konqueror as the default it
opens and goes to that site. If the default browser is something else the
browser opens, then I get:
file:///root/.kde/share/apps/kfmexec/tmp/26647.0.323.asp, where the address
should be..
Konqueror is ok, and it's getting better with each release, but I don't like
having no choice.

I've used ATI cards for quite a while and had no problems at all. I'm
currently using an All-In-Wonder Rage 128 Pro AGP w/32 megs onboard. I've
always found them to be reliable and trouble-free. The few times I've called

[newbie] StarOffice vs. openoffice

My apologies if this topic has been covered recently. I like openoffice
basically, but it is very slow to lauch and the fonts in the program itself,

That being said, is it worth the few extra $$ to get StarOffice, or can I at
least fix the font weirdness in openoffice?

Thanks,

I usually check rpmfind.net first, especially if I'm looking for

What program are you using to play MP3s? Have you tried Xmms in the
Multimedia/Sound section? Also, make sure you have sound enabled in the
control center, and check the mixer to make sure you have the volumes
set high enough to hear anything.

There's a version of Gnutella called gtk-gnutella that works very well
and is as fast as any of those clients are. The version I have that
works the best is gtk-gnutella-0.90.2-0.i386.rpm. I believe I got it at

[newbie] LM 9 scsi problem

2002-09-28 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy

I installed Mandrake 9 yesterday, no apparent problems. I tried using my HP
5p SCSI scanner today and xsane can't see it. If I do "cat /proc/scsi/scsi"
both my SCSI devices are recognized. I have a CD burner set up as IDE-SCSI
that had been working fine along with the scanner. Now neither work. I
notice when I boot the system the first message I get is that the scanner
SCSI card driver doesn't get loaded, then I get "insmod exited abruptly".
Where should start looking for the problem? It's beginning to look like a
general SCSI problem.

I've been using Reiser for quite a while with no problems at all. On the

[newbie] Palm m500 and JPilot

2002-07-27 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy

Hello, I've got a Palm m500 and am making no headway with pilot-link or
JPilot. This is Mandrake 8.1, btw. What "device" should my Palm be? It sits
in a USB cradle. Anything at all would help. Please help get me started or
tell me where to RTFM.
I'm using JPilot version 99.1 and pilot-link version 9.5. I can't get any
newer versions of these installed without running into lots of dependancy
problems. These versions are from the Mandrake 8.2 CDs, and they installed
fine.

Thanks!

Greetings Jonathan,

Thank you for your email.

We have no issues with Western Digital drives being installed with Linux or

You can go to a command prompt and type "mouseconfig". That will bring
up the mouse configuration screen like the one you saw during setup. If
you're stuck on your destop and need to get out press
ctrl-alt-backspace. Then you can run the same config for your mouse.

You can get a demo version of DiskKeeper and I'm 99.9% sure it will let
you defrag your disk at least once. I would run it a couple of times,
and then you should be able to reclaim a lot more than half your
available free space in a contiguous space.
Good luck, keep us posted.

[newbie] 8.2 breaking things

2002-03-23 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy

I just installed Mandrake 8.2. Everything looks okay, except for the
fact that there are several programs I have that ran under 8.1 that
when I install them in 8.2 come up with dependency errors. One program
is WordPerfect 8; it won't install at all. Another is Opera 6, which is
looking for a file I can't find. I just reinstalled 8.1 and all is well
again.
Are other people having these kinds of problems?
Incidentally, the problems I'm having crop up with a clean install as
well as an upgrade from 8.1.

Thanks,

I've tried ext3 and it seemed faster than ext2 but when I went to
reinstall it would stop after a few screens and I'd get the message
"oops, no root partition found!". There was a root partition. I just
finished reinstalling with Reiser, did a cold reboot on purpose, no
problem during reboot.

[newbie] RealPlayer plugin

2002-03-14 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy

Is there a way to install the RealPlayer plugin for Netscape without
installing the whole RealPlayer 8? When I install the whole thing it
takes over lots of MIME associations that I never could get to work
right again. I just want the plugin so I can see the streaming stuff.

Thanks,
Jon

[newbie] clock keeping correct time?

2002-03-10 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy

I'm running Mandrake 8.1. Every time I reboot the time on the clock is
off by usually 8 hours. I reset it then if I have to reboot to go to
Window$ then I have to set it again. It's not a big deal, but doesn
anyone have an idea? And yes, the clock in the BIOS is set correctly.

[newbie] xmms problem

2002-03-08 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy

I have xmms installed. I was working fine, I had it associated with
.wav files, etc., no problem. Then I installed RealPlayer 8, which
worked well, but nuked my .wav sound file associations. I restored them
to associate with xmms, but no go. Then i uninstalled RealPlayer. I
rebooted, got the correct .wav icons back from RealPlayer, but now xmms
will start from a command line but not from the Multimedia menu. It is
supposedly associated with .wav files but I get the same problem as
when I try to run xmms from the menu.
HELP!

IglooFTP-PRO is very nice. It has all the standard features you are used to,
resume download, etc. I like that feature a lot since I used a dial-up
conncection for a long time and spending the three days it took to download
a new distro was easier being able to resume from the point where my ISP
dropped the connection.

You need to go to the Mandrake web site and get the latest kernel and

Just boot from your Windows 98 floppy and type "fdisk /mbr" at the a: prompt.

Use your WinNT boot disk and type "fdisk /mbr", without quotes at the a:

What's the name of the Linux configuration

[newbie] kernel upgrade

1999-06-24 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy

I installed the latest kernel RPM, 2.2.9-27 and there's no problem
installing, recompiling, etc. The problem I'm having is with the modules.
I do a "make modles" and "make modules_install" and the modules get
installed to the old module directory instead of the new one.
Any ideas? Or does it matter?

Thanks!

Stefan, I didn't mean to imply at all that price=quality. I've just had
good luck with that modem. Your experience with the Sportster is
certainly good news as those modems did have problems a while back. I
also had a Supra FaxModem that worked great also, but I don't know what
their stuff is like now. It's certainly a lot cheaper. The one I had
also had that neat feature of being able to recognize a fax carrier and
route the signal to the appropriate place. I would be interested in
knowing what other modems of recent vintage that people are using
successfully under Linux.
