[newbie] Mandrake 8.1 update wrecked my system.
Recently, my monitor died and the process of finding a suitable replacement led to a series of new problems. Someone at Mandrake told me that I really needed to update my 8.1 system (which had been working just fine), and the process of installing the updates royally messed everything up. Now, when I try to boot up with Linux or Win4Lin, after the system goes through all the usual start-up processes, a shell login appears on the screen for less than second and then the screen goes black and there is nothing I can do except hit reset on the box. If I boot up with either Linux-nonfb or failsafe, the computer starts up fine and everything works fine, except I cannot start up Win4Lin. I have been trying for more than two weeks to solve this problem, without any progress. I am willing to pay a reasonable fee for a satisfactory solution, but feel that the Mandrake 8.1 updates are responsible for my problems and it irks me to have to pay for a solution that Mandrake caused. My system worked just fine before doing the Mandrake updates. [newbie] How to get CD Player to work?
How can I get CD Player to work? Got the following error message: CDROM read or access error (or no audio disc in drive). Please make sure you have access permissions to /dev/cdrom There is a music CD in the CD drive There is no file /dev/cdrom file on my system, but I do have a Sony CD-RW and I can mount and umount, read and write to it. Also tried XMMS but can't play a music CD on it either, and cannot find any help-button on the control window that XMMS starts. The XMMS control window image is way too tiny to read, anyway. Also, how does one access this list's archives? [newbie] How to append files to a CD-R?
How can I add or append additional files to a CD-R onto which I have already recorded or burned just a few files? After reading volumes of messages on this list, plus the recommend HOWTO on this subject, I finally figured out how to burn a CD under Mandrake 8.1. It's regrettable that there seem to be so many extra hoops that Linux users have to jump through to get some of these very basic tasks to work. I still do not have either xcdroast or Gcombust working because they each require nuisance configuration steps. But I prefer command line operations, anyway . . . once I can finally get the correct syntax worked out. In this case, the most concise and helpful explanation came from Tom Brinkman, although even his required some interpretation and adjustment. Tom described his approach this way: 'bdcd' cd_image 'bacd' (in the dir where the wav's are) or 'biso' filename.iso alias bdcd=cdrecord -v -eject speed=8 dev=0,0 -data (need to make cd_image first, eg, 'mkisofs -r -o cd_image dir') alias biso=cdrecord -v -eject speed=8 dev=0,0 alias bacd=cdrecord -v -eject speed=8 dev=0,0 -pad -audio *.wav From Tom's examples, I derived the following two key lines which I put in a shell script that I named burncd mkisofs -r -o cdimage /home/joe/data cdrecord -v speed=2 dev=0,0 cdimage But I had to omit the word eject because I got this error message: cdrecord: No such file or directory. No read access for 'eject'. Can anyone explain why this error message and how to get eject to work? Also, would someone please explain why dev=0,0 works but dev=0,0,0 (which other examples use) does not work? In my shell script burncd I have actually built in some additional functions including variable input options and a log to automatically keep a record of all of the CD's I burn, etc. But it is really neat that those two simple lines are all that anyone really needs to burn a CD. Thanks for the tips. I'm sticking with 8.1 for now because I've heard/read of so many problems with 8.2 and kde 3 and I can't take the risk of messing up my stable install. ;)) On Thursday 11 July 2002 11:33, you wrote: Extract the files from this tarball and you'll likely find a file named setup, install, or configure that will, or should be made executable. can't be sure though without knowing whats inside that archive. extract the files into a directory and see what comes out. to initiate the install process then you would do something like this on the command line: ]# ./configure However, you might have saved yourself the trouble since OpenOffice is included on the Mandrake 8.2 install CD's. don't remember which one of the three it's on, in fact I myself just found it over the weekend when i did a fresh install on a workstation at home. Re: [newbie] more BS from RIAA: Music Labels Plant Online Decoys, Mull Lawsuits
You're absolutely right, Todd. Everyone deserves to be reasonably compensated for the creative and productive value-added work that they do. Sadly, there seem to be three extremes that get in the way: 1) Greed -- some (like monopolistic, anti-trustworthy Microsoft and grossly over-paid athletes, actors, corporate CEOs, etc.) who excessively, disproportionately, and unreasonably profit from whatever value-added they contribute to society; 2) Theft -- those who steal the value-added of others' work, whatever it may be, without being willing to pay reasonable compensation; and 3) rip-off-artists who profit disproportionately on the work and productivity of others. (One has to wonder-out-loud what value-added lawyers, packagers, and the advertising industry provide to society. For a $5.00 box of cereal a farmer gets what, 9-cents? It could be argued that the computer software shareware concept and the GNU-Linux open source initiatives just might be among the most significant developments in the history of mankind. For in this we see the very best of humanity -- many, many talented people freely sharing their best efforts for the good of all -- and many appreciative users supporting those efforts in various ways. But then, sadly, there are too-many who want everything free and contribute nothing to anyone. Perhaps the web will remedy this problem in creative new ways that we have not yet seen. On Friday 05 July 2002 12:13, you wrote: While I'm all for sharing and sticking it to the RIAA, MPAA, and the man, I tend to side with the artist on this issue. It would be nice to see a distribution system in which the artist could reap the benefits of his/her labor more than the record label. It's great to share as in free software, but you are projecting your ideas about sharing onto others. How do you make your living? Shall we all of a sudden decide that your labor should be shared for free, without any input from you? People who develop free software do so willingly. I don't think it's fair to project that onto others so you don't have to spend $15 on a crummy CD. Lately I'm having a hard time finding music I want to purchase anyway. That's the fault of the record labels and FM radio. Blah!! I know this will be an unpopular position on this list, so let me practice moving side to side and ducking . . . Re: [newbie] print/capture screen
Alastair wrote: There's an easier way from KDE - do Alt-F2 then type ksnapshot. The snapshot is grabbed immediately you press Return, then the ksnapshot window appears and you can do what you like with it. This is helpful . . . however, my original question was: is there any way to do a Print Screen in Linux . . . which would be comparable in simplicity and ease-of-use . . . to the way it works with MS windows? Again, I want to emphasize that I am definitely pro-Linux, however when something as useful and basic as Print Screen works as well and efficiently as it does under MS windows, then I would hope that the Linux community would be eager to develop an equal or superior functionality for Linux. In this case, it seems that what has been suggested for Linux thus far is not nearly as simple and efficient as as the MS Print Screen feature. Simplicity and easy of use is not subjective. It is determined by how few steps (keystrokes and separate manual operations) are required. In the case of MS Print Screen, there are only two steps: #1. Press the Print Screen button. #2. Press paste in any application program in which one desires to place the captured image. I use it numerous times almost every day, capturing screen prints and pasting them in LView (the most easy-to-use, versatile, graphics tool I have), or in Paint or in Paint Shop Pro or in Pagemaker or in any other application program where I can quickly and easily crop, resize, or edit the captured image. For comparison, using Ksnapshot with Linux, there are literally dozens of steps and keystrokes involved in saving a captured image to a file then opening that file within any given application program. Why is it not possible, with Linux, to use the Print Screen key to simply capture a screen image into memory (as MS clipboard apparently does) so that it can be pasted, from memory, into any given application program without having to go through all the extra steps of saving the captured image to a file first and then several more steps and keystrokes to import the saved file into any given application? Surely there must be a way to do this. Joe Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I sent the following question several days ago, and never received any response? Did the message never arrive, previously? Re: [newbie] Problems with Win4Lin and Acrobat Reader 5
Hi Terry ... I have Win4Lin working perfectly on Mandrake 8.1. While I don't have a specific suggestion to solve your problem, perhaps the following info may be of some help: I had some difficulty getting Mandrake 8.1 to work because it failed to recognize my very generic video card (S3 Virge), after I got some partial help from Mandrake tech support and then had to fiddle around for a couple days trying to get command line Xfdrake to work (since it didn't work as advertised), I finally got the video card to work. Downloaded Win4Lin and it installed and ran perfectly on the first attempt ... though I did have to consult with Win4Lin tech support on a couple of fine-tuning issues. They responded same day on the first question and second day on a couple of others, so if you don't get the answers you need from this list, you might try Win4Lin tech support. Please feel free to contact me directly if I can be of any further help re Win4Lin. Re: [newbie] child-protection for Linux?
Thank you for that very helpful explanation. I am using KDE 2.2.1 and my version of Konqueror has only three radio buttons, not four: Allow, Ask, and Deny. Deny is too restrictive because there are some good and useful uses of popups such as you described with your banks. Allow is a poor remedy because it is no improvement to have to respond to the nuisance dialog popup -- actually it's easier to just X (close the original popup to which the dialog popup refers. Surely there must be some way to distinguish between intrusive popups and popups which result from selecting a valid option on a website -- such as your bank uses. I also use popups in some of my websites to open a separate window to display something in response to a link on one of my web pages while keeping the original window open. Surely there must be some way to preserve this worthwhile use of a popup window but get rid of unwanted junk-mail popups.
