[newbie] LM 8.0

2001-05-09 Thread KompuKit

Well...I finally upgraded...to 8.0 from 7.2
and I love it...great job mandrake !!!

everything went without a hitch...except one thing...
I bought a CD set from cheapbytes...
so, I assume they are the download version.

I have a Pentium 233 MMX, 64 mg Ram
Installed 8.0 on a Maxtor 20 gig HD
(dual booting with a 8.4 gig HD maxtor win98)

Before upgrading...I bought a
Creative Labs ModemBlaster 56k external modem
model DE5625
it worked fine under 7.2...and windows..
but now, I can't seem to get it to work under 8.0

I placed the same info...for connection just as I did in 7.2
...it trys to connect...I see the lights flashing on the modem..
but when it gets to a certain point...
( I think it's when it says LOGGING ON TO NETWORK)...
it disconnects...and gives me an error 16 (whatever that is..)
I double checked all the settings...to make sure I have them right...
and try again...to the same thing.. What's happening here...?

why can't I connect...?

[newbie] new modem info

2001-05-02 Thread KompuKit

Just in case users are wondering.

I went and bought a brand new :
Creative labs
Modem Blaster V.90 External
DE5625
56k kbps/Data/Fax/Voice Modem

today...

I set it up in windows first (have dual-boot two HDs)
then I re-booted to Mandrake-Linux 7.2

The OS seen it...on boot...(saw lights flashing)
all I had to do then...was change the
"init string", in kppp setup...and wahlah !

using it now to send this post...
I love it...it connects at faster speeds then the Viking external.
Haven't tested the voice portion as yet...not sure how in linux...

Just thought someone might want to buy this modem, and would appreciate
the info first.

it is because: TRUTH HURTS

either on startup...or shutdown...or if just testing them, with its test
button.

How do I fix this...anyone know?

Please keep the religious masturbation of the list serve. I realize that
you feel
superior in your religious standing, but what you don't realize is that
none of us
care. If you feel the need to preach please join a Christian discussion
group. Or
better yet why don't you go find some 16-year-old unwed mother to call a
sinner, or
wait I know why don't go to the terminal ward in your local hospital,
and inform
the patients there that if they had lived a life with out sin they would
have been
much healthier. Bottom line is this Kompukit, your statements here are
almost more
inappropriate than that of Julio. At least in his case it was a comment
made
without thought, but you are using this form and members an opportunity
to spout
your religious propaganda. I think that your messages are far more
reprehensible
than Julio's, so please stop.

I have the HP 9150i cd-writer...
had the same problem til I re-installed again, mandrake 7.2.

now it works fine...but there's a bug fix once you re-install

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Tutorial/CDburner/

just re-install linux...but do NOT format your /home partition
and upon reboot, after reinstall...the drive will be emulated...and seen.

Re: [newbie] 8.0 Beta

2001-03-06 Thread KompuKit

I'd like to throw in my two sense here...

ALL authority...belongs to God...
and alot of times His children(us), refuse ourselves of certain
things...
that God never intended us to refuseproof below:

In the book of Esther (ch. 1+2) their was a king who held the first ever
beauty contest...to find a bride. all of the contestants (I found
out)...
were between 12 -21 yrs of age...(the king was 65)...NOWHERE in the
bible...
can I find that God punished Queen Esther and that King for marrying
each other...
(which they did)...
So, this being the case...I believe (like so many others also)...that
there is
nothing wrong with the idea of age difference, in a relationship...

Now, granted...I think 12-15 is too young (myself)...but 16 should be
ok...
IF you are married first, of course.

Re: [newbie] Installing and upgrading for the first time

2001-02-26 Thread KompuKit

Personally...i would wait and buy/download 7.2
as it is much better/easier...for install/use etc.

but if not, install on your HD...6.0 will run you thru
the setup process...but it is very hard to understand at first...
if you've never installed linux before...it might take several trys...
before you get it right. After the 6.0 install, all you do...to upgrade
is to
NOT re-format the /home partition (just root), and do a full re-install.

[newbie] MX record setup

I've been trying to learn how to setup MX record for my box...
and seen this (below) on a mailing list somewhere...

I don't have this file../etc/named.whatever.com specified below

where/how do i create it...anyone know?

Don't forget that if you specify a full path you need to terminate it
with
a period. Otherwise the nameserver will append the current zone, e.g.:

whatever.comIN MX 10 mail.whatever.com.

ok...it's a process of elimination...

I have 7.2 complete...
install the app called: xmms
and it accompaning packages...then try to play something with that...
what are you trying to play/hear?

midi, wavs, mp3s ...what?

then if you don't hear anything...still
bring up the app,called: Kmix
and try different settings...

kmix is like the mixer settings app in windows 9x taskbar when you
doubleclick
the speaker

Re: [newbie] Dual Boot

2001-02-02 Thread KompuKit

I just bought a 20 gig Maxtor EIDE HD...
I already have a 8.4 gig Maxtor setup thusly:

Master drive
2 partitions=3 gig for win98, and the rest for Mandrake 7.2

using Partition Magic 5.0 with Boot Magic to boot to the
linux part

I wish to setup the 20 gig...as slave,..to the
8.4 Maxtor (master using (then) win98 alone),...

...the slave 20 gig...running 15 gig of mandrake...
and perhaps..5 gig as a test for other linux OS's...

HOW DO I ACCOMPLISH THIS ???
HOW do I use bootmagic...to boot to the new drive?
How do I install grub or lilo...to new drive, running as
slave?

from what I understand...I first must setup and format
the new 20 gig...using MaxBlast Plus boot floppy disk...

I have a Pentium 233 MMX...with the BIOS version
being 1997 Award

[newbie] menu system problem

2001-01-23 Thread KompuKit

Is there a way to fix multiple entriesin the Kmenu
system?

after an attempt of installing an app called: "rmagic" for
analog

(which also used CPAN to install some needed modules)

I now have multiple entries of everything in my kmenu...
there's 4 entries of each app...

I re-installed kdebase 2.0...which fixed it momentarily
last night...but when I just logged on tonight...it's back
to multiple entries again. Then I tried menu editor and
that
helped for a short time...but it's back again also.

I tried re-installing menu, and everything else I could
think of
in RPMsI tried SUing to root...and commanding:
update-menus -v

and menueditor
both in user, and in root mode

how can I fix this...?

Hi...it's me KompuKit...
I finally got my linux box online again...
you wouldn't believe what the problem was...

I installed a network card...a month ago...
(LinkSys ether 16 10baseT LAN card)

and had win98 auto set it up,without installing
the drivers from its box.
previously, however, I had a cabletron 2200 installed,
but forgot to uninstall its settings etcin the control
panel
networking...so I had two settings conflicting with each
other...
along with my dialup adapter...settings...both in windows
and linux.

once I took out those settings...I was able to connect with
no problem.
both in windows and in linux...weird eh?

So, anyone thats been wanting to subscribe to my
mandrakeusers help
mailing list ...can do so again...
the server is up and running now...

Re: [newbie]

2000-12-22 Thread KompuKit

get your CD...and look for kppp rpm...in the rpm folder.
it's there...
next...bring up a terminal...and when you get a prompt...
type

su

this means "Switch User"
it will then ask you for roots password, give it the
password...
then after you press the enter/return key, type:

kpackage

this is the better way...of browsing to the CD, where the
rpm is,
then installing it...it will be something like:
/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/kppp-1.14mdk.i586.rpm
then click INSTALL

Re: [newbie] KDE 2.0 and Mandrake 7.2 Lockup Problems

2000-12-02 Thread KompuKit

the store version (7.2 complete) with kde2 beta
works ok...but first you must update to kde2 final from
off the download version.
I've had nothing but problems after installing the download
version.
I believe they came out to quickly with the download
version.
there is massive problems with it...I couldn't get apache
running...at all
...I first had to go back to the store version then get
apache running,
then update to kde2 final from off the download version
(had to do that a certain way, also)

if I was anyone wanting to upgrade to 7.2...I would first
get the store version
(that seems stable enough, except konqueror crashes if not
used correctly,untill updating to kde2 final)...then leave
the download version alone...till they fix a few things.

2000-11-26 Thread KompuKit

man, I'm having almost the same problem with my
Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 PCI
I can hear wav's (now, didn't before)
can play mp3s on xmms, can hear startup wav,
but as for midi's I get this window when I browse to
a site that has midi's playing:

" OPEN /dev/sequencer: no such device
  playmidi 2.4 copywrite...etc "

what kind of computer do you have...
what are the specs
what kind of BIOS (manufacturer, year etc.)
check inside bios settings for a onboard com2 setting
it might be turned offso that com1 would work for the
modem.
what com port is your mouse on...?
need all this info to help.

first of allmodems are always commonly hooked up
on com 2 some times on com3 and 4but hardly never on
com1
this is the first time...I've ever heard of a modem hooked
up as com1
the mouse is supposed to use com 1...try setting it up on
com2 and I
bet it works
